  • In this HVACR Video, we go over the Troubleshooting of the ECM 3.0 Variable Speed Blower Motor and Testing with and without the TecMate Pro. I show you where the test voltage goes and how to check if the Fan Motor is good or bad. I have other variable speed motor diagnosis videos on determining if the actual motor is bad or the module on the side of the motor is bad. Supervision is needed by a licensed HVACR Tech while performing tasks as Experience and Apprenticeship garners Wisdom and Safety.

    Im having an issue with my blower only running on a low speed (freezing up the ac line outside) The errors I am getting indicate restricted airflow. All vents are open, filters are clean and unit has been working prior to this issue. I used your method and the blower kicks on and runs at high speed as it should. After hooking everything back as it was i started it again and the blower ran a little higher then before for about 30 seconds and then dropped back to low speed. Does this mean the ECM is not my issue?

    My question more than anything is what makes the ecm go bad so often? I am about to be on my 3rd under warranty and warranty runs out in about 15 months which is about how long this last ecm has lasted. The company doing the repairs told me power going out is the biggest cause but mine doesn't go out very often.

    I'm curious how you determine the entire ECM is good by simply turning it on?? How would you determine if the motor will "vary" the speed or torque? Seems like there is much missing from performing a complete test of the motor. Thanks for posting.

    • @acservicetechchannel
      @acservicetechchannel  4 года назад +3

      MJ, the motor manufacturer made the tester and if you apply power to those terminals, it will tell if the motor will turn on and if it will ramp up and down improperly. If that is working then the rest of the programming is usually in tact. Then you can test the actual airflow volume using the temp rise formula, hot wire anemometer, static pressure aligned to the manufacturers specs or another method, thanks!

    Does the DC Millivolt portion of the motor control module need to be tested or does that section never fail? can the motor run fine on the 24 volt AC input but not ramp up or down with DC Mv input?

    • @acservicetechchannel
      @acservicetechchannel  5 лет назад

      The 24v is for testing and it wont communicate back and forth with the board to ramp up or down. Some manufacturers will give you DC millivolt communication voltage to read with a meter but it is simpler this way, thanks

      If the module is bad, then the tec mate pro will not be able to turn the motor on, thanks!

    Is there a way to replace a ecm motor to a standard blower motor?

      Yes you could use 24v contactor turning on and off the blower motor for an air handler, thanks!

    I had used one of those to test a motor, and the motor started. The motor was getting high voltage, and since it wouldn’t start up, and started with the tested I said the board was failing to send signal to start up the motor. Called the manufacturer after and they said I needed to test dc voltage for the speeds, once I did that they said the motor was getting signal. The module was bad not the board, can’t really trust the tested now

      Sell them a new board and a motor and call it good. Can't miss. In and out onto the next call. Easy peezy. Extra parts sale.

    A recommendation... Please get yourself a small pointer. In many of your videos you point to something thats clear in your mind but your actually pointing at two or three different things.

    But how do you know if module is bad?

      The tecmate pro would help the diagnosis. If the tecmate turns the motor on and there is not a fluctuation up and down and up and down again in speed then the motor is good. If the motor does not turn on, then you check the resistance readings on the motor itself detached from the module along with a check from windings to ground. If the motor is good then the module is bad. I have the tecmate pro linked at www.amazon.com/shop/acservicetech thanks

    I feel horrible for people that have VS, and it failed after the warranty, basically, do you want to buy a new furnace, motor is close to 50 percent of a new furnace, York would be 70%, as a tech, it doesn’t make my day, ran into one today, customer called me at 6 am, no heat, middle of the night he thought he smelt an electrical smell, got there at 10am, after moving a couple maintenances around, sure enough, module failed, I do not replace the module without the motor, when out of warranty.
