Yes!! I saw this in the theaters. We take it for granted now, after so many variations, years, & personality reveals for superheroes... But it was _groundbreaking_ back then, for a movie character, to acknowledge that you _had_ to be a little crazy (w/suppressed rage) to be Batman! Keaton's delivery & line: "my life is... _complicated,"_ was iconic.

Placing the metal tray beneath his shirt before getting shot by the Joker was his way of telling her the truth, hoping she would connect this with her earlier experience with Batman being shot. Expecting the Joker to shoot him in the chest, especially after reading his psychological profile and seeing his penchant for disfiguring people's faces or gassing them to death, was a bit risky.

Such a loaded scene. Keaton enters with a single rose, Joker exits with a bouquet of roses. My favorite line from the whole scene is "then he had his lights out!" I heard someone else interpret it as, "He made mistakes, then I had to put his lights out!". Might have been cooler, but either way the "lights out" is good foreshadowing of what Batman does to Joker and the "pale moonlight" is good foreshadowing of what Joker did to Batman's parents. Overall, the multiple rose exit makes it look like Joker is trying to one-up average men, and Keaton's single rose entrance makes it look like he could care less about one-upers. Great dynamic and great portrayal of 2 would be generic men, even though they are both larger than that in the bigger picture.

The best part of this is that "WHAT" after Nicholson's line. Bruce tries to out crazy Joker and Joker out calms Bruce. When he says what, that's him realizing that Jack Napier was the man who killed his parents. Until that moment he though Napier was just another mob guy working for Grissom. When he whispers, "I know who you are" to Joker before telling this story, Joker knows HE ACTUALLY DOES NOT KNOW YET.. but Joker does. Joker would have figured out that it was Thomas and Martha Wayne he killed in that alley when the news hit. Jack Napier had quietly been walking around as a mobster with the hit on the Waynes under his belt. This is likely how he got to be Grissom's number one guy.. He was likely hired by Grissom or another boss before Grissom to kill them and it was always his plan to shoot them both. This could have been his first hit.. This would explain why BOB.. his partner looks mortified over the moment.. He didn't know it was a hit but was expecting them to just rob a rich couple like they typically do. Bob literally looks scared when Jack kills the Waynes. He's scared of Joker till his end after.
Joker (Jack) actually knew that Bruce was about to act cool and try to impress a girl by getting into it with him, having no idea the guy he was about to scrap with, was the guy who killed his parents and made him get nuts. After he says his now famous line.. Joker is completely calm. Says the line, he knows Bruce will remember.. and then shoots him to finish his job from years ago. Joker believes he's just gotten THE LAST LAUGH.. BUT..
Bruce is wearing that plate in his coat to take the bullet he knows is coming. Bruce is trying to tell Vicky that he's Batman... He can't say it. So by doing what he's doing.. he's hoping her journalistic skills will kick in and she'll realize he is Batman after utilizing her makeup dish as a bulletproof vest. This is how Vicky figures it out, then she goes to the Mansion and tells Alfred to let her in because she knows he's Batman so there's no point in hiding him or that.. so Alfred lets her right in because he knows Bruce and her need to talk now that she knows his identity and is a reporter. Alfred did the smartest thing because if he tells her to leave, she may run a story about Batman being Bruce Wayne.
The irony to this scene is that Joker is revealing himself to Bruce, while Bruce is revealing himself to Vicky... BUT later Batman would reveal he is Bruce to Joker the exact same way while also letting him know that he (Joker) had Batman out of a suit and trapped but didn't realize it, and Batman got away. Joker let Bruce know he was the guy who killed his parents but when he did, he didn't know that Bruce was Batman.
Batman doesn't laugh.. but in the end.. we know now that the laughing bag... was taken by Batman. The last laugh belongs to Batman.

    • @rxtsec1

Interesting perspective most people don't think the guy with jack in flashback is Bob but I always thought so and I always wondered If Joker knew he killed his parents and was telling him. Where I might disagree is if it was a mob hit. I think he was just evil and crazy and did it just because. But him knowing what he did does make some sense though we never really know. The script is good enough we know what we need to know.
