So many people asked if I could send them all of the knot test results that I created this free guide just for you. Download it for free and you can see all the results of all the knots I have tied and tested. Links to all the videos as well.
The Snell Knot is a popular fishing knot used to attach a fishing hook to a fishing line, particularly when using bait for bottom fishing or targeting species with a sharp downward pull. The Snell, while not the strongest knot I’ve tested, it has other attributes that make it desirable for some anglers. It's known for its effectiveness in keeping the hook in optimal position for hook sets.
This is not the only way to tie a Snell Knot. In fact, I have tested at least 3 other ways to tie a snell on this channel.

93% is a pretty good percentage for a very simple knot
Not even that simple anyway
LMAO that's a pretty basic knot@@dirrtydave
Palomar is easier and stronger. Next stronger knot is the San Diego jamb which isn't as easy as either the Snell or Palomar
@@dirrtydavedon't fish😂
@@tPeazyy neither the palomar or san d. jam are as reliable as the trilene. may be stronger but the trilene will always be more reliable
Uni, Palomar, Improved Clinch, Snell…you’ll find people who’ve used each for 30-40 years and swear by them. I use all four. They work.
I use UNI for braided line cus it stays tied and mono I use the palomar
Trilene is my favorite knot to tie. I’ve been using that knot for the past 10 years.
Uni is the best I swear by it for life I’ve never lost a fight with a fish because the line snapped
😊
Snell, Palomar and Uni here. Never failed.
My dad did this knot and he passed away so I could never ask him how he did it! But this is it! Thank you so much, this means a lot as its the anniversary of his passing!
Sorry for your loss. Wishing you many fish with the snell.
Sorry for your loss, too! He's probably fishing in heaven right now, with constant record breakers :)
Sorry for your loss! Wishing him many fishing years in heaven and I hope you are doing well with many fish on the hook
rip
Gotta be a good quality hook. Otherwise that knot is useless.
I use snell knot for my circle hooks to keep them straight, different knots for different applications.
Different strokes for different folks. I use my left hand sometimes.
@@douganderson5504 If you sit on your left hand until it goes numb, it’s like a clumsy stranger.

@zeekary if you soak it in chili powder, it's like a quick jaunt to Tijuana and back for a roadie.
It wasn't designed to be the strongest. It was the way it makes the hook respond when a fish strikes the bait . The hook when a fish strikes curves into the fish mouth setting the hook better. The snell Knot is still very good knot for strength
The circle hook does that regardless of the knot you tie.
@@Concerned-Nihilistwhat's its success rate without the knot and then added the knot and u just increased it further
It's most common because the knot pulls the hook and sets it.
What does the line pull when tied with other knots?
Unlike knots tied to the eye of the hook the snell goes through and to the shank. The force and tension on the line presses on the eye of the hook creating a small lever thus turning the hook inward and into the hook set. If tied incorrectly the snell can work in reverse and turn the hook backwards and away from the hook set.
I remember the moment my dad taught me the Uni Knot 50 years ago. I have taught it to many since, including mybown two boys. I appreciate it even more as I get older and my eyes aren't as sharp. Only once through the eye of the hook, and It can be tied totally by feel, no matter the light. If it has ever let me down, I'm sure it was my own fault!
93% ain’t bad! And looks easier than a lot of knots out there.
I’ve never tied a snell but my uncle uses it exclusively and I’ve only heard good things about it online. I like that you can tie it without needing an eyelet! 🤙 this is a great teaching short
My dad and grandpa always snelled their hooks when fishing with live bait. Especially on slip sinker rigs for walleye or catfish. It’s great when you want a more straight line connection.
Thank you so much, for your free pdf! I'm pleased to see that the uni knot which I use 100% of the time, is the strongest knot.
You are so welcome! Glad it is helpful
Thank you for teaching us, I use to be a boy scout and honestly I forgot some of my knots so this is helpful.
Snell, uni, palomar are my usual go to knots
I like the uni knot. It's never failed me.
IAM WATCHING FROM AUSTRALIA TIGHT LINES EVERYONE 👌 😀 👍
Nice and easy. This method would work great for small circle hooks. Thanks Tom
I use a uni knot for everything from tying on lures, to leaders, to tying my line on the spool
“The Snell knot holds at 93%”
*Straight braid has entered the chat*
This is how my grandfather taught me to tie my hooks.
This is the go-to for me and circle hooks.
Love this! Would like to see the Miller knot...!!
When I use braided wire I use the Palomar Knot.
Easy and it works.
Don't know how tough it is but I never had a break.
It is the most efficient. Easy to remember and generally strong enough - of course there are other stronger ways to tie a hook.
I Snell ALL Bait hooks
,i like the knotless knot Too
I snell using the uni knot. I use the uni for everything. Makes life easy.
Agreed! Uni is king
@@tomrowlandpodcast I'm just lazy and don't want to practice knots. One knot for any scenario just saves my the headache and lets me fish more.
🎉🎉 I want to catch a fish that’ll break my 🪢 !!!
Well technically if it broke your line you would not have caught it😂
I’ve always done a slip knot. Aka the hangman’s knot
Snells are the best for lining up the hook with the line, so it doesn’t matter if it’s not the strongest, it’s the one that will hook up the most.
The Double Uni knot is the best!
Agreed! Tested it so many times and it is always one of the top knots
The snell is what I was taught as a child and have allways used it
You know the feeling of “if I let go of this hook I’m stabbing myself” when tying hooks? well I can feel that watching this
The snell knot might not be the absolute strongest knot possible, but if i get something on the end of my line that's strong enough to break the line at the knot, it's probably a snapping turtle, or a catfish. If it's a snapper, im cutting the lone anyways, and if it's a catfish, I almost never have a landing net in my kayak, unless I'm specifically going for catfish, or pike instead of bluegills, perch, sunfish, and crappie, and if im specially fishing for pike, or catfish, I'm usually using 15 lb line, with a steel leader, and if i have a fish on the line that can break the line at the snap swivel, I'm doing something very wrong, or i have a fish large enough that it's dragging the kayak around.
The best knot is the one ☝️ you tie properly.
I love the snell for live/cut bait !
I used snells to connect fake corn to when fishing for carp and use live shiners or bluegill for catfish
It's probably the first knot fishermen learn. It's easy, and for most, the only one they really need.
Well damn, I was invested. I was ready to see you pull on that thing.
Egg loop is a more sturdy knot, and it’s like a snell but with a few extra steps
I'm not fisherman however that seems like quite interesting and useful data. Very cool.
thanks for the easy instructions.
Palomar Knot FTW!
.
This is the only one I know how to tie. Interested in the other ones! Would like to learn.
look up clinch and improved clinch/trilene knots. strong, simple, versatile and the hook stays straight.
Danco pliers. Lmao 😂
I grew up using figure eights for all my hooks. Only ever had my line brake above the knot. I really only do small fishing with bass and bluegill sized fish tho.
I just like the snell knot. It is the most consistent knot I have ever tied. It also works very well from four pound test to 100lb. It also pulls the hook ideally for circle hooks and the like
There’s no such thing as a more consistent knot. If you tie a knot right, it’s always consistent. This is just the only one you tie properly
Thats my style for ocean fishing the best tie knot!
Depending on the hooks you're using the snell makes for better hook up ratios. I don't know if I've heard it being used for its strength potential.
Thank you Snell 🤘
I use snells to bait for carp
My favorite knot by far is the palomar. I tie loop knots if I don’t have snap swivels. Trilene knots are a good quick knot
I always snell my live bait hooks because of the hook up ratio more so than strength. I use a uni knot tied over the hook shank, I'm interested to see the test on that vs. the way you've tied it here.
Palomar is my go too. I like the double loop thru the eye of the hook. Where most mono and flouro breaks.
Yea but it tends to really twist mono/fluoro when tightening. I know people say the uni knot isnt the best, but it’s honestly been great for me. And you can always loop it twice around the eye if you dont trust it. I always use a polomar with braid, though.
Palomar with mono and fluoro just self destroy itself by pulling, Palomar works fantastic but only with braid
Try the double San Diego. It’s stronger and easier than either the clinch or uni. The Tuna knot is another winner… just a little bulky.
the strongest way is the friends we made along the way
I’ve used the palomar ever since a kid besides fly fishing knots.
Been using that for a few years and wont go back besides egg loop for salmon and steelhead
I’m a uni knot guy, love that knot
I always did the knot from the back if the Eagle Claw hooks packaging.
I did a double loop through the eye, four twists around the line then through the double eye loop and up through the last twist loop around the line. Tighten and trim. I bent more hooks than I had knots break.
Snell doesn't compare to Palomar, improved clinch, trilene knot ect... but when tying up bottom fishing rigs a snelled hook will present the bait better on a top and bottom or dropper rig, that's when to use the snell.
Can you leave a longer tag and tie another hook on it for a double hook rig?
Yeah. But there’s a better way to do that type of snell
Palomar has never failed me and is super easy to tie
palomar is the strongest knot i do believe for such things
Thanks I didn’t know how to tie a fishing not that way
Snell is good for setting hooks.
As someone who does a lot of deep sea fishing, we use a really weird knot tha involves making a loop, twisting the cross a few times and pulling the bottom of the loop through. It essentially makes a standoff version of a freshwater drop shot rig with a 1lb weight
A lot of people use a snell knot with a flipping hook for bass due to the way it penetrates when setting the hook
Thanks for sharing!
Palomar knot ftw.
Before you cut the extra line off tie a simple knot into it because that knot will never go thru the primary knot making it stronger
Love how it's literally a noose
The snell knot is usually used in a curved eye hooks 👍🏼
The times I snell I prefer straight eye, I could be way off but it seems like I hook up more often
I like snells or knotless knots to make hair rigs, that’s pretty much it. Any other thing I tie is a palomar knot. I have had no issues with it and typically even in some pretty nasty snags I’ve gotten my rig back. Unless I’m using a fairly light weight leader, but, that’s expected.
Any time my regular knot keeps slipping I resort to this, works every time
Uni for mono/ floro and polymar for braid plus double uni for connecting mono liter to braid
My grandfather taught me to snell hooks years ago. Didn't even use the hole. His hooks in the Netherlands didn't even have holes. Just a bump.
Use tress to knot but tested in mono
Snell looks like a type of temporary whipping tied at the bitter end of a line to prevent unlaying & fraying. Bery easy.
Palomar knot is the best
Uni knot is the only knot I tie anymore besides when I’m fishing a Texas rig then I’ll use the snell
Seems to be a pretty good knot regardless it's not the best knot.. I do use that knot here in Michigan for my walleye harnesses and it's been good for that..
Ive always used snell for limb lining and float lining. It tends to cause the hook to turn into the fishes lip. Sometimes itll even side snag a fish that just smacks it.
Came here to say this. I started snelling hooks years ago and I can’t count the number of times the hook “set itself” before I had time to.
We catch big catfish down here in Mississippi. We like a loopy loop.
snell is great when bait fishing
I really like this
When you make bait rigs it’s best it keeps them inline going thru the water
Snell is the straightest pull!!
Anything with a bent shank i tie a snell so the line is straigjt off the eye. Also i tue a snell on my straight shank flippin hooks, with the line going through the back of the eye and out the front. When you set the hook, the line launches the point upwards and really helps improve hook to landed fish ratio.
93 % is good enough for me some of the knots in tree work are at 60% and used for life support
this can be done by 95% of people though. at 93% strength, i see the simplicity as an absolute win
I usually only snell bent eye hooks. If I’m pre-rigging I’ll go for a Double Pitzen but on the water it’s usually a Palomar.
I prefer clinch knot for 99 precent of the time the other is the double clinch knot I use for live bream for bait either never fails line may break but that knot ain't ❤
It good enough and you can hold bait in there easier and if you get snagged you lose less line
2nd one proper but Palomar knot is best strongest
Uni knot always wins in my book
I wonder if enough is left over to loop back with a safety knot if that would improve the strength?
Lol my dad only taught me the Palomar knot. Partially I think because it’s a strong knot but also a small knot and fish like crappie’s can see pretty well and it worked good with lightweight monofilament line. Also used on leaders fro northern pike and hooks for leeches to catch walleyes
I use a palomar to fish for striper with live bluegill
Toms a Key West charter Gleeclub member😁
Mines is like this, but at the string, honestly idk how to tie my hook, been doing that since but also havent been fishing for years now
Snell is more about action isnt it? The way it pulls the hook.back through, particurally goood for circle hooks if im rigbt
Palomar knot best for me
The way the line is contacting the eye is more important than knot strength in this knot.
When a fish hits and pulls the hook, the hook will pull sideways and ideally set itself in the fish.
93% is not terrible, i might have to try this more often haha.
Best knot is doing 4-5 overhand knots and with braid i recommend melting the tip as a sort of hook, this knot has never once failed me and ive been fishing for 10+ years(a 25kg line snapped and the knot was still attached)
I fish for large mouth bass use the palomar knot never lost a fish due to the knot simple fast and very strong
Snell knot needs to have a hook with a angled eye loop
It's because of how it pulls during the hookup making it better for billfish
Clench knot gets the job done..
