These guys kick ass no matter what race they are, but I remember when this song came out there was no black bands on the hard Rock scene. They certainly represented with athority.

Ok....I'm a 50 yr. old white guy. I remember when this song was first released. My first reaction back in the day was "WTF? They're BLACK!" I say with as much conviction now as I did then, "If the music is good, who cares about race?" Thank you, my virtual daughter , for your video.

I agree, however with these guys being black was part of their selling point. They were one of the first "manufactured" bands ever. Their name is living colour, and they put together an all black band as a gimmick. It's like an all girl band or an all Asian band. That's the part that most people don't like about it.

I was much younger the first time I heard this song, and it's social commentary didn't quite register. Now that some time has passed and I'm hearing it again, this song is fucking amazing. Absolute 10 for me. Also, this song might sound like it has a simple formula, but if you try playing the guitar parts, you'll realize there's nothing simple about this song at all!

Great video but understated score. 9.5 from the Polish judge. Living Colour was one of the only bands that broke the color barrier. They had a message that was delivered in a format the most people understand that frankly do not understand rap or hip-hop music. Their lyrics were also spot on and i think people of all races got the message.
As far as how the song progresses, i understand your comments, however, Vernon Ried lays down an amazing solo which builds upon anger and angst and has a little of that yup, we can kick ass. Great song and great album.
I hope and pray that their music made a difference.

    What a classic! Great choice!
Mind boggling that anyone would take offense at Hendrix. Great music is about the human experience and condition. It thus transcends culture, country, politics, religion, skin color etc. At least that's the way I've always viewed it. Leaves much more room to appreciate everything out there without preconceived biases.
Good job with the variety on the channel! Keep it up! 👍✌

There weren’t too many African American Hard Rock/Metal band’s back in 1988, and they definitely set the bar high and paved the way for others to follow. Vernon Reid is a god on guitar! He can make the instrument do things most people didn't even know was possible. And Corey Glover's voice turns metal into gospel. Living Colour is pure genius. You should definitely check out more stuff from them. I think their first two albums are the best but everything's got something cool on it.
Also, if you like groove in your rock/metal, you should listen to "Middle Man" from this same album and "Type" from the 2nd album, Time's Up.

    • @brianmadigan9938

Elias Kinnunen it is a celebration of humanity. What are humans, if not individuals? We're all unique and a little different (or a lot in some cases). We all identify with cultures as part of our individual identities. I'm a geek and a metal head with Irish and Scottish heritage. All of those have innumerable celebrations in their honor, yet we don't bat any eyelash at them. Now, take a people, who less than 200 years ago, in this very country, were bought, traded, and sold like livestock. They were taken from their homes by force, shipped across the ocean, and turned into servants and farming equipment (along with other, much worse things). In that transition, much of their history was lost as families were separated and communal history lost. The end of slavery didn't stop it though. It took until the civil rights movement of the 1960's before a black person could vote, or use the same drinking fountain. Their history was stifled as well as their rights. How many famous black people can you name before Dr King? Yet the foundation of the music you love, and similarly, the foundation of this nation, were built by the hands of a great many nameless black people. Conventional history, though, wouldn't have us believe that.
If you really want to celebrate humanity, you MUST celebrate the individual. Without differences, we'd be robots without a humanity to celebrate. So, celebrating humanity means celebrating our differences. Why would anyone resist that?

    • @brianmadigan9938
      @brianmadigan9938 6 лет назад +2

Elias Kinnunen You're kidding right? First, it's not that long, and second, it's not my social commentary, it's my answer to a question you asked me. I'm not going to pare it down to make it more palatable to you. If you don't want the answer, please, don't ask the question.

The cool thing about Living Colour is, their guitarist, Vernon Reid, is not only on Twitter, but is very approachable, and willing to interact with fans.
He and I actually discussed some of the odd rime signatures in this song, as well as the arpeggiated chords in the chorus. Turns out that Vernon is a bit of a Rush fan. He's also one hell of a cool guy.
I personally love this song. I love the political imagery, and how, on the whole, it's as relevant as ever.

Like you said in your video, it's about them, not you. They are projecting their own insecurities and/or self-hatred onto others. They look for someone to blame when they can't manage their own neurosis. The saying , "When you point your finger at someone else, there are three fingers pointing back at you," highlights this perfectly.
You have a very mature attitude about it all and, again, I commend you for your poise and grace. Like First Lady Obama always says, "When they go low, you go high." And my hero Gandhi said, "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." Words to live by! Keep doing your thing, sista! You're awesome!

I try to believe that one of the hardest things for us humans to do is to put ourselves in someone else's shoes--and really, truly understand what they go through, and that that's where the difference starts. It gets a lot darker than that when it festers and spreads, but...I don't know.

    • @ruinsane100
      @ruinsane100 6 лет назад +10

I disagree. Blacks can be *angry and resentful* of whites (and rightfully so) due to the oppression that they and their immediate families have endured, and the racism that they continue to endure, but that should not be considered racism. If one needs to spell out examples of the current rampant racism in America, you won't accept that reality anyway, so I choose not to spend my time doing so.

      Isn’t that the point?
My point is everyone is focused on black and white issues.
Black slavery, white supremacy, black lives matter, etc!
I’m sorry that y’all had to go through all that,
But Natives also need attention with their struggles.
Jews were slaves for 400 years! Yet they made a annual event on that.
I feel for you blacks and Jews, but why are Native issues ignored or swept under the rug in media?
Here in Canada, we have our own black lives matter version called Idle no more.
We’re tired of our voices falling on deaf ears.
I’m just trying to say we need our voices heard and properly addressed as well.
      We’re tired of political correctness.
I’ve no problem with any race, I’m just trying to say there’s grey matters out there too.
      Not just black or white

Exactly - Whenever I hear this now all I can think of his entrance at Wrestlemania 29 just like you was alive when it came out so I also know who Living Colour is -If you watch UFC and have seen his 2 UFC fights his entrance song has been what? Shows how much CM Punk loves this song kinda like Bad Reputation w/Ronda Rousey which song did she play as here entrance song during her time in the UFC? Bad Reputation now what does she use in the WWE? Bad Reputation?

I hate it when people say "If it wasn't for this band this band, or this genre wouldn't exist" But I'm going to be hypocritical and say that there would be no Living Colour without the Bad Brains. Both Corey and Vernon were huge fans and deeply influenced by the Bad Brains. I have mixed feelings on Living Colour though. I love their more rock songs, but their more R&B type stuff I can't quite get into. My favorite living Colour songs are "Pride", "Leave it Alone", "Type", "Time's Up", "Nothingness", and "Minute Man". Those are great tracks that get overlooked by the popularity of Cult of Personality.

Black history month, where the hell is some Fishbone!!! Anyway, saw Living Color this past summer and they were incredible!! The bass player Doug Wimbish (not the guy in this video, Doug joined in 1992) is O-Mazing!!! In this song, the "neon light, nobel prize" section is the coolest guitar part ever. That chord progression is awesome (and difficult to play). There is a song on this album called "Open letter to a landlord", best song on the album.

Dude.....your reaction is pretty defensive and looks angry. It seems nothing brings that out more than anything pertaining to black. I am white. I can't say exactly how it feels to be black. However, I have been blessed with black family. I also have a black autistic step-son, whom I took with me when I left his father. I see now, where I didn't long ago. Ask yourself this, why does it bother you so? I had to ask those questions of myself as well. We all do. :)

    • @PinkMetalHead

You should do your research before you speak because the black historian who created "Negro history week" made it a WEEK. It was the government who made it a national celebration and extended it to a month. So you can get off my page with that mess. And how is celebrating the achievements of people from a collective group racist? I hate how people throw "racist" around so loosely. You need to know what REAL racism looks like. And that shows me that you have so much privilege that you think "BHM" is racist lol. I wish that I believed that's what racism looked like..so much more pleasant.

I was once in a band called "The CNN Project" with two black members with me being the only white guy. We were together for a few years in the early 2010's in Birmingham Alabama. We were basically an old school metal band and we faced a lot of adversary. It's like people were surprised black guys could play rock or metal. I celebrate any ethnicity that has the heart and convictions to play what they're not supposed to by society. It's a shame nothing became of that band cause we fucking grooved and were heavy as fuck. I've still got all of our rehearsals on my 8-track recorder.

Welcome to the world of Living Colour! I had the same reaction to these guys way back in '89. They blew my mind, and are easily the best band to emerge on the scene in the last 30 years. All are incredibly talented musicians, and the best thing about them is that they don't fit neatly into the rock mold. They each play and have had schooling in jazz. For an added bonus, the singer (Corey Glover) is a professional actor. He had a small speaking part in "Platoon" with Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe.

I’m with PinkMetalHead. When a hard rock or metal song has groove that makes the song even better especially for the masses. Not to say that if a song doesn’t have groove that it’s bad, it’s just nice to see hard rock and heavy metal enjoyed and appreciated by a population that prefers gravitates more towards pop songs or songs they can dance to.

I was a teenager when this song came out (showing my age here), and it's still just as powerful now, if not more so. Seeing how racism has been getting a stronger foothold in our country in the last couple of years, we need to see more unity, especially in music. Music is one language that unites all of us. And everything you said about role models is dead on. Also, eff those who hate. They're small people who want to feel bigger than others. Rock on, ma'am!
