A "Cult of Personality" refers to a charismatic individual who has the ability to motivate/sway/persuade people by the sheer force of their personality alone. It does not matter if what they are saying is rooted in reason or reality. They can make you believe whatever they want you to ("I tell you one and one makes three"). Not only that, people will follow such an individual regardless of how they are manipulated by such a leader ("I exploit you, still you love me..."). It is an admonishment to not fall victim to the cult of personality but to take personal responsibility for the content of your own mind ("only you can set you free!")
This is the best explanation II have seen of "Cult of Personality". Thanks for explaining it so clearly. I tried a few times but your explanation is so much better.

Vernon was such a f’n beast on that guitar. Corey could sing his ass off in the 90’s. He held a note for what seemed like 3 mins at a live show. Loved these guys.
@@Tomekkplk the solo is meant to be “sloppy”. It’s chaos like the rest of the song and the meaning behind the lyrics. It’s a work of pure genius. Rolling Stone put him at #66 of the 100 greatest guitarists so you are wrong to say no one mentioned him. I’d put him higher than that. He’s definitely in my top 10 favorites for sure.

It's pretty cool seeing a song from my teenage years still be relevant now and probably even more so given how much easier the cults of personality can be spread over social media. It being a banger of a song makes it even better. :)
This song is probably more relevant today than it was back when it was released... great piece of guitar work from a very underrated guitarist, Vernon Reid
I been rockin' for 45 years, but Reid's guitar solo is one of the wildest, bombastic and fastest ones I've ever heard to this day--Like a buncha wild animals fighting in a cage!!
Yeah exactly. They're like chaotic animalistic whirlwinds. Its not supposed to be melodic. But it is expressive. His riffs are also really, really good.
One of my favorites of all time! People are always amazed at the ‘Blue eyed soul’ folks and I was a kid learning this was an all black hard rock band and I was addicted! Great music has no color!
One of my favorite bands from the 1980's. Straight out of NYC and part of "The Black Rockers League". Their new music is just as powerful. Saw them live on the "Chair in the Hallway" tour. Still relevant today
I've seen them live when they opened for the The Rolling Stones back in the day. Same energy as in that video. They put on a great show (obviously, if The Rolling Stones were bringing them on tour).
Great reaction. This band deserved to be much bigger than they were. If you want to hear them at their most soulful, check out Love Rears It's Ugly Head, but if you want another banger, try Type.
I suggest listening to other songs by them as well, like : Funny Vibe Pride Leave It Alone Auslander Love Rears It's Ugly Head Elvis Is Dead Type Solace of You Middle Man Open Letter (To a Landord) Glamour Boys
Really nice reaction and I loved your whole presentation. Living Colour never really achieved the level of fame they deserved. Musicianship, lyrics, tunes, prescience they had it all (actually still around but this video is 40 years old) they truly had it all. Maybe ahead of their time. This song is a true classic and it was great to get to see your first reaction to it.
I still remember when this video debuted on Headbangers Ball just around midnight late night on MTV. It was stunning and unprecedented to see POC, putting this out there. “Glamour Boys” was the second song I heard from them and it made me a fan after that.
My hip pop🤣🤣🤣.... You're something else!!!... Living Colour an all Black ensemble kick booty with their frenetic high tempo style. Love them. Rock on. .Right on....
The opening was from Malcom X's speech "Message to the Grass Roots". The title was penned by Nikita Khrushchev in response to Joseph Stalin "On the Cult of Personality and Its Consequences". Other historical figures seen and heard in this video include JFK, FDR, MLK, Benito Mussolini, and Mahatma Gandhi. According to Vernon Reid, "a famous German" was originally also in the lyrics but was pulled due to fear that referring to him would be misconstrued and too controversial.
Loved this reaction ...you know they were ahead of thier time it was the eighties girly style for guys was common if that song came out today it would still be a hit they were way too good
Just told my son who actually PLAYS guitar like this.. “Man… why do all the GREAT ONES like you and this girl have all the skills and charisma only make a few videos then stop!?” Lol That means.. please continue to make videos. You were made for this.
Would love to see you react to Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust (their most well known song and the music video got voted as the best Finnish music video ever back in 2006 when the song was released). Truly an underrated band from here in Finland. Also a band with many different sounds all the way from slow melodic songs to full on rock. Although if you want to immediately hear a song that showcases how crazy good the lead singer Marko Saaresto's voice can be (and while his vocal range might not be the most dynamic out there he is an amazing example of what you can achieve by having absolutely perfect control of your vocals especially the raw emotion that his voice is able to convey) then i recommend listening to their song Daze. His vocals on the chorus are something out of this world. I just think that so many more people would love their music if they just ever heard them but since their from Finland it rarely happens. Although many have heard their songs in Remedy's video games Max Payne 2, Alan Wake, Quantum Brake and Control (Also every single reactor i have seen reacting to them has been pretty much blown away by their music so i'm very confident you'll like it) also... also... lot's of deep and meaningful lyrics and wordplay in their songs sorry for the long rant i just really want more people to know about them :D
I'm new to you but I loved to see your facial reaction to those guys. There are numerous other bands out here that I promise you'll appreciate the same.
This song was so ahead of its time. Think of the enigmatic, charismatic leaders that we’ve had, the people who have an army of blind followers who will burn everything if told to. “You gave me fortune, you gave me fame, you gave me power in your gods name, I’m every person you need to be…” Who does that sound like? Maybe a certain former president whose fame and fortune and status only grew after his legion of conservative supporters made him this god like figure in the eyes of their party.
Like Barack Obama. If you think a cult of personality and warnings against it only apply to one side you're not paying attention, you're not learning, and you're not informed.
Vernon Reid was so underrated its a crime! Im a hard metalhead. In my book Vernon is up there with any heavy metal guitarist. Is he Randy Rhoads or Dimebag Darrell? No. He's Vernon Reid. Its like comparing a Ferrari to a Lamborghini. Both are bad ass in their own right. And other than the Lambo spontaneously bursting into flames at a red light, I like them both.
The basic idea in the song is how people give the power to people good or bad. Stalin who killed millions and he is given Gandi as his counter. The point about MKL was a great leader if he really speaks for good you die. An Evil leader like Stalin will often live, but good is often killed. The bad people the vast majority of politicians are like that. They tell the masses 1+1=3. They agree and in turn give power to those saying it. Even if it is wrong those leaders know how far they can push it.
Vernon Reid is a great guitarist,, a shredding monster! The man is highly appreciated by Eddie Van Halen, Trevor Rabin, Pete Townshend and Keith Richard's. Kick ass hard rock band from the 80s,,, life was soooo much better then!!!
