Vernon Reid is nothing short of spectacular on lead guitar in this song. Just unreal talent.
he is amazing but I still prefer the playing of Rocky George who has played with Suicidal, Fishbone and the CroMags, he also played with Pap Smear which was the punk band Jeff Hanneman and Dave Lombardo were in pre Slayer
Hell of a fucking nice guy, too. 😎
Vernon murdered this song like his life depended on it. Probably hella raw too. If so then can only imagine the credit he deserves to being an insane guitarust
@@cerebralfailure8804 you lost us at suicidal fishbone my guy
@@erics8018 check out Suicidal Tendencies- Nobody Hears, Monopoly on Sorrow and Gotta Kill Captain Stupid
As a white boy who has played in bands all his life I can tell you it was the coolest thing in the world to see an all black rock band back in the day.
Living Colour are great, but there are many other all black rock bands. Fishbone, 24/7 Spyz, Bad Brains, Body Count, Death (the group from the '70s, not the more recent one called Death), Band of Gypsies, and more.
@@christianman73 true, but Living Colour was the first all black rock band that broke big. Body Count was 2 years after L.C.
@@neillenet291 That's true, as far as being on commericial radio and MTV day and night, *but* if we only measured music by the bands that "break big," then so many great bands would be lost and forgotten. Living Colour, themselves, would be the *first ones* to say that it was earlier all-black rock bands like Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsies, and Bad Brains, and Fishbone, that helped to pave the way for LC. Of course, without the blues, which was created by black people, there would be no rock and roll, because blues and country were the foundations for rock in the '50s, and many of the earliest rock musicisna and songwriters were black, such as Chuck Berry and Little Richard. It always surprises me when some people (whether white or black) are *actually surprised* to see black people playing rock, because black people *largely created* rock and roll in its beginnings! :-)
They won two Grammys in the 1990s...

i know Im randomly asking but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid forgot my account password. I would love any tricks you can offer me
Back in the day, the hair bands ruled the MTV landscape. So when this song came out, and we saw all of them were black it was mind-blowing. In an awesome way. I loved it.
🤘Living Colour🤘 Underrated badass rockers.
I know these guys, personally. As a musician, I used to work sessions with Muzz, Doug, Vernon...the Dudes. They were and are incredibly talented.
The only all black rock band that I know of. Pure unadulterated fire and listen to the message. One of the greatest rock songs ever.
I agree 100% with you
Check out Bad Brains, all black, but hard-core punk band instead of rock.
KINGS X...........
In the 70s Mothers Finest was all black and they flat out ROCKED!
@@SS-wt3xe 1/3 black
Their message resonates more today....than yesterday...
This has been a top 20 on every head bangers play list since it came out 30 years ago.
Truth! Still on my playlist to this day.
HEAVY rotation in the workout mix!!💪💪💪
The solo.....god damn the solo.......brings me to my knees and gives me goosebumps.....it did it in 1989 and its done it EVERY time I've heard it since. Vernon Reid is a GOD.
This track is on my short list of songs that are MUST HAVES on my playlist......
Vernon Reid just shreds that guitar. And this song is wonderful for teaching this concept to undergrads.
Vernon is one of America's greatest imports, England's loss is music's gain :)
not sure he "shreds",, but a great song never the less.... check out KINGS X..... not all members r same race... but much better band with uplifting messages..............
@@SS-wt3xe Nah brother Vernon shreds.
@@jgilmer ok... i respect your opinion....
During the guitar Solo, Vernon looked like he was having an epileptic seizure
Living Colour was way ahead of their time in music. This song is full of truth that fits everything going on today too. "When a leader speaks the reflection lies" ?
Ok, so. The first verse, it's "When a mirror speaks, the reflection lies."
The second verse, it's "When a leader speaks, that leader dies."
Also, a subtle change that is hard to catch, but:
The first verse, it's "Only you can set me free."
The second verse, it's "Only you can set you free."
Had the good fortune to meet lead singer of Living Color, Corey Glover, about six months after seeing them open for The Rolling Stones in 1989 at the now demolished Vet in Philly. Living Color blew The Stones off the stage, ask anyone who was there, hey some nights, The Stones just don't click, but Living Color did. Mr. Glover was a true gentleman and would not take the compliment from me when I said they were better than The Stones, just a humble dude out in the world. I admire Living Color, they just go, with style.
I saw that tour in Detroit. Stones were fire that night...and LC STILL blew them off the stage.
Lifetime metalhead here. And I am here to say that in this song, Vernon Reid performs the greatest guitar solo in rock and roll history.
Much love, have a good day.
Living Colour covered “Who Shot Ya” a couple years back, and it gives me chills.
You should watch the official video for "love rears its ugly head" by Living Colour right away! You Def won't regret it!!!
Living Colour founded the Black Rock Coalition back in the day. Other bands were 24-7 Spyz and Follow For Now ( I still have their single Evil Wheel). Fishbone and Bad Brains were around before that but fit right in and were just as vital at that time.
One of the best bands to come out that era. The talent is amazing!
Dude the lyrics to cult of personality is what's going on now the collective mindset that's ruling trying to rule America right now is the cult of personality. And the only way we can be free is set ourselves free thinkers free spirits not bow down to these couldn't hold the personality people in charge of society. ❤️❤️❤️🤘😎
Awesome song...gets ya pumped up! Vernon Reid kicks ass on guitar!
The two guitar solos that dude did were... just no words... gave me chills!
They did a reunion tour a few years back and got to see them live one last time. They've only gotten better. They burned the whole place down!!!
This song should be popular today. It says alot about news, propanda, govt. "I exploit you, still you love me. I tell you 1 and 1 makes 3."
Definitely should check out the Bad Brains "I Against I" or "Rise" you won't be disappointed
Congratulations! you passed ROCK101 with an A+. Moving on to ROCK102... rock on...
Yeah man, Vernon Reid... one of the most underrated guitarists on the planet! Every guitar player (including me) has tried to learn that main riff. Its impossible. Vernon's talent is just sheer wizardry!
They were FIRE back in the day. Socially conscious and so freaken talented. By too far underrated and their message is still relevant. Check out some interviews with their guitar player Vernon. Such an intelligent musician and kind too. Great reaction!
"you don't have to follow me, only you can set you free"
Vernon Reid is so underrated. Dude could shred with the best. The entire band deserved a hella lot more credit.
So glad they have been included in the Summer Festival schedule this year and hopefully every year after. An extremely underrated rock band. Welcome to the truth Gen Z.
Jimi Hendrix playing "Hey Joe" at the Monterey festival in 1968, played the guitar with his teeth and behind his head is fire fire.
yeah.... hear ya......
What I love about Jimi is him teaching himself to play guitar upside down because he was left handed and guitars were for right handed folks
Love these guys. I knew you would love them.😄😄 "when a leader speaks, a leader dies" is the greatest lyric in any song.❤️
I fkn love this song , they fkn badass , God bless X & family , everybody
Living Colour and Extreme are two must-hear bands!!
Check out LC's "Type" and "I Wanna Know"
Extreme's "Get The Funk Out" and "Cupid's Dead"
This song came out in 1993. Living Color disbanded in 1995, reunited in 2000 and have put out new albums since. This band needs more love, so check out their new albums, buy them, share them, give more LOVE to this Great Band!
Living Colour’s version of Memories Can’t Wait is another banger off of the same album. You’d like that one. Open Letter to a Landlord is also fire, but in a different way.
Absolutely awesome group. So good they opened for guns and roses. I saw them several times in person. As good as any group out there. Vernon could have played with most bands and they would not have missed a beat. Fabulous talent.
One of the all time greatest political songs of all time. Amazingly enough, its almost more relevant with what we've just gone through than when it first came out. This song must be remembered forever, play it for anyone and spread the word.
A timeless classic that will never grow old! The guitar solo made a list of the top 25 all time guitar solos, someone help me with the source, please. Now, Love Rears It's Ugly Head needs to be next from them, then Letter to a Landlord, followed by everything else!
"In the few moments we have left, we want to talk right down to earth, in a language everybody here can easily understand."
-- Malcolm X
"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."
-- John F. Kennedy
"The only thing we have to fear ... is fear itself."
--- Franklin D. Roosevelt
"You Can Tear A Building Down"....But you can't erase the memories. Talking about knocking down buildings down in the projects.
They are still touring with 'burnin Vernon', one the most criminally underrated guitarists. They are coming to Memphis in March, ya'll ❤❤❤
First time I saw/heard this on MTV as a 14 year old, I immediately bought the album!
Mad riffs and his voice is off the charts. Classic banger!
You know, I'm in my 40s, so I've known about this band since they were new. When I was coming up, people around my age wouldn't listen to metal. Would not give it a chance because it wasn't what they were into. What I love about today is more black people are willing to give it a try and they do it on camera. More black folks are seein' what I saw all those years ago, and I love it so much. Thank you!
The rest of their albums KICK SOME SERIOUS ASS! The GUITARWORK is SPECTACULAR....and the lyrics are SERIOUS commentary! AMAZING performances too! As a white, metal head, I fell in LOVE with this group the first time I saw them open for The Rolling Stones in 1989.....
Was super hot back in the day and still fire! They came on the scene and kicked the door down!
They are still a working band. Their live show is wow.
Yes, they just started a tour last week, so if you can, if they are in your town, if you have a chance, check them out
@@deseramaxwell2780 I saw them several years ago and want to see them again.
Think about this boys and girls. This song was HUGE when it hit in 1988!!!!
This is PRE-GRUNGE and this song is STILL a killer 33 years later!!!!!
You should listen to “Letters To A Landlord” by Living Colour. Fantastic slow song beginning then they go wild with the freaking awesome bass line!!!!
These guys won a couple Grammys, Best Hard Rock Performance, Best New Artist, MTV Video Music Award (for this MTV video) too.
The emergence of Rap stopped about all interest in Rock music by black artists.
The first Living Colour album was fire. Check out Open Letter To A Landlord and Glamour Boys.
"Which Way to America" so much fury!
to be honest, they all were
Banging song, fire as hell, and a deep message to boot!
A fantastic band!!!! I never get tired of this song!!! It’s been a favorite since 1988!!!!! ☮️❤️
Now you've punched your ticket to "Fishbone", and/or "24-7 Spyz". Amazing bands.
Vernon Reid absolutely shreds on guitar!!!
Corey was a soldier in the movie Platoon. I watched a reunion they had talkin bout a bar they'd go to to unwind and the first nite a local band played, until Corey and Johnny Depp got on stage, between all the actors were many musicians. They played together every nite after but, as they lost people in the movie, their numbers dwindled. One guy said he'd give anything to get those nights back.
I remember when this song was first released!! These boys can rock!! They are absolutely amazing!! 🤘🤘🤘💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥♥️♥️♥️
80s rock ruled the world.... Rock has no color just pure talent !!!!
Open Letter to a Landlord is another good song by them.
24/7 Spyz, Gregg Parker-Ozz II, Znowhite, Sound Barrier, Black Death, A Band Called Pain, Of Dark Matter, Fishbone, and mixed bands like Kings X, Busboys,
Cut myself off, sorry. Jon Butcher Axis, go back to CSNY, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Chambers Brothers, and mixed bands are all over the spectrum- Simple Minds, AWB, Specials, Selecter
I believe the Wayans brothers was going to call the show Living Color but since this band was out first they ended up calling their show In Living Color.
Years ahead of its time, bruh ✌🏼😎👍🏼🎸
It was the most wonderful thing in the world to see someone brought to a place they've never been before, gave me tears.
Since you like guitar listen to King Crimson “Elephant Talk” Live on Fridays 1981-04-10. It’s a tremendous live performance.
I saw that on TV a few weeks before graduating from high school. I was like "THE FUTURE SOUNDS COOL AS HELL."
And it is. :)
Vernon Reid - One of my favorite guitar pieces in all my years of rock. Cool video too.
Corey Body Glove Glover. Excellent band.
VR was one of the best vocalists back then! This was a huge song back in my clubbing days (I'm 60 now).
The singer is Cory Glover, he was in Platoon!
That's an electric guitar classic
Want to hear more? I recommend Cliffs of dover, that another legendary song from a legendary guitarist from Texas
Nobody was prepared for that. They helped create Nu Metal. They were talented, creative, intelligent, entertaining and unique. Also, Vernon Reid was a crazy, sick guitarist doing stuff no one had ever heard, even if his tone was shit. They were an amazing band and ruled the country for a very short year. Solace of You is still one of my favorite songs.
It's a banger dude!!! I have loved this song since it came out.
They don't get enuff recognition they have earned praises 🙏🏻😘🥰😍🤩💋
You know these guys are still touring right?! They play Kansas City tomorrow night! Favorite band of all time!!!!!!
You have no idea how cool the 80's were 💪
Saw these guys in concert when I was young in Orlando Florida. It was AMAZING! Visage was the club they played.
Your evaluation is what I and many others too experienced. We just didn't expect this type of energy . Believe it or not for a brief moment racism was erased from the minds of people worldwide. The energy and message still hold even after 50yrs still valid.
So much energy from this band.
This was all over the radio in 1990. They were so good.
Find the video of when they played the Apollo. The looks on the audience's faces when they started jamming.
I loved this tune from the moment it hit the air waves. They rock out like crazy.
I was blown away then i saw this song back in time living colour kicks ass 😎🎸🎸🎸great tune
This song is fire 🔥. I was in 7th grade when it came out, still amazing today
You gotta hear "Open Letter to a Landlord". Kicks A___!!!!
A lot of comments seam surprised that these guys were black. I was like 8 or 9 when this came out. We loved it, but I don't recall anyone ever mentioning them being black. It wasn't an issue. Good music needs no explanation or color. Great song.
great track...still played to this day on my local rock station!!!...
Vernon is a bad man just vicious
Vernon Reid getting it done folks! The most underrated guitarist ever!
I just love the soul you ooze out! Refreshing Living Water!
I saw them open for Public Enemy in 1998. Love them. :)
I had heard the name Vernon Reid , I didn't know he was in this band. I love this song!!
Check out "Desperate People" by these cats. The song is a JAM and wooo boy...Corey (lead singer) shows just how much range he has. It's a slammmer.
Also off this album is "Open Letter (to a Landlord)". So soulful and full of feeling.
Lastly, check out their song "Nothingness". These masters deliver all the power, soul, and feels.
No one ever reacts to my favorite Living Colour song, Auslander. Which is even more prescient than this song.
A couple of other great songs by Living Colour are "open letter to a landlord" and " Love rears it ugly head"
So, here's my thing...
I LOVE THIS BAND AND SONG! The first time I heard it, I got busted for shoplifting a Motorhead CD from Musicland a week before they released it, and while in the stock room, waiting for my Mom to come pick me up in shame... I STOLE this CD from the stockroom and had it a week before it was released, and walked out with my Mom (true story).
This is the band that OFFICIALLY sealed the deal on me not being some little racist asshole, because there was NO WAY I could hate on black people if this was my favorite song (Bad Brains and Fishbone helped ALOT on that too, honestly)...
But the fact that every black person that reacts to this ALWAYS says that this is the song they get requested to do the most is KINDA sad to me. It feels like a bunch of white dudes out there watching like "He's black... I bet he can't imagine black people playing this kinda music!", and thats EXACTLY what the old problem was that this band defeated in the late 80's, ya know?
Are we STILL at that point?!?! Because I can name you like 5 or 6 black bands that play rock and roll and DESTROY shit off the top of my head.
While I love it, and im glad you're discovering it and loving it, I wish there weren't so many people pushing you all on it based on what they consider a "racially musical oddity" to see how you react, ya know?
I wish it was just like "Damn... thats a really good band." as opposed to "OH MY GOD!!! They're BLACK?!?!" (Thankfully YOU didn't do that... but 90% of reactions do that response, and THAT is why white people keep telling black reactors to do it, honestly. And THANK YOU FOR THAT!!!)
Just my 2 cents on this one.
I DO love the song, though.
I got to see them in 1989 in Jacksonville opening for The Rolling Stones
There is also BAD BRAINS , FISHBONE , DUB WAR who are black rock band who blend reggae , metal , funk and RAp.....check on them..they re dope...and mostly underrated.
I love this song..Listen to it all the time and still as relevant today even more so I think..
Vernon!!! Daaaammmnnnnn!!!!
This song was a huge hit. Love it. Loved it the 1st time I heard this
Yes, Vernon Reid and his guitar work is next level for sure.
100% agree, his guitar playing makes the PE track "Sophisticated Bitch". Without Vernon, the track would just be okay.
Way ahead of their time my friend!!
I had the biggest smile on my face the whole time watching this...thank you!
