An amazing band. 40 years later and this message is more relevant now. Most of people listed were politicians and activists .
Ditto... hello from Cody Wyoming, I'm 52 but still kick a***
I agree!
So sad that things have only gotten worse in this regard. People don't even try to look for the truth.
Letter to a Landlord?
35 years later from 1988 😆 please don't make it older than it already is but the rest of your message is on point.
When this came out, we didn’t care what color they are. We cared that they rocked the crap outta this song.
Yeah, music has become very self-segregated in the modern day compared to how it was in the 70's and 80's, we had white funk bands and black metal bands and no one gave a shit.
This ^
Yes
Dude, you hit gold here. These guys were so incredibly talented. Back in the 80’s it did not matter your color, everyone loved these guys. That guitarist absolutely slays it.
"Burnin'" Vernon Reid on guitar
I remember hearing the song on the radio and loving it.. then seeing the video!!!!! It was a moment for all of us ❤ I think i threw my shoe at the TV 😂 EVERYONE loved/loves them.
I loved this band!! And they were all chocolate! It was the 80s, it didn't matter what color you were. The music stood for itself
Vernon Reid just shreddin' that geetar to pieces.. I love this tune; I have since the first time I heard it back in the olden days. Excellent choice, brother. Please continue...
It would be nice to see more black rockers out there!! Living Colour killed it!
Dude all you have to do is a google search and a tone will come up, most not as mainstream, but that how you make them more well known
Era wise Fishbone. 7dust has a lot to say too.
It would be nice to see less racism. Black ppl are SHOCKED to see Black ppl play Black music. That's a testament to how smooth the theives are 😐
God Forbid!
@@MarvelloBumps Fucking Facts.
Hey Shon, you're doing great👍Cult Of Personality was released in 1988 as the lead single off the group's debut album "Vivid." The song is about the dangers of willingly submitting yourself to any person or organization and they reference certain leaders and politicians such as John F. Kennedy, Russian leader Khrushchev, Martin L. King, Gandhi excreta...you get the picture. But you had me cracking up with "chocolate band" 😂and here's a couple more of their songs in case you're interested "Living Colour - Leave It Alone" and "Living Colour - Solace of You" (by VEVO) I really had fun with this one. Thanx 4 giving this old woman a big belly laugh
Open Letter To A Landlord is a powerful song. Need to give that a watch.
@@donjackson5522 Glamour Boys is catchy and less serious. I love everything on their first album. Saw them open for the Rolling Stones once and as headliners 2 other times. They really broke new ground!
Nothingness is great too
To riff on the same theme, Living Colour also released a single off their next album after "Vivid" called "Elvis is Dead" as Elvis is a cult of personality, just not a political one but treated like a cult or religion. It makes fun of all the people who believe in conspiracy theories. That last line is fantastic: "I have a reason to believe that we all won't be received in Graceland."
You got 'the cult of personality' right, it can be a 'Hollyweird' type, but this song is more about political historical personalities.
And future 2016 ones !!
@arkhsm you mean 2020 right
It’s about anyone who has a huge following or influence on the people
Not even close. Hollywood and rock stars are not in the kind of power like who they’re talking about. Everyone from Hitler to MLK a cult of personality have people follow them because they have charisma, some use that for good (like MLK) and some use it to harm (like Trump).
@@arkhsm They mention the nobel prize winner. Who was the future nobel prize winner? Obama.
LOVE this song!!! Vernon Reid is shredding that guitar 🎸
Damn near 40 years later, and at least another 25,000 guitar solos. And Vernon's second one in this song is still top 20 EVER.
The 80's crushed it with killer bands/groups. Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Prince, M. Jackson, AC/DC, The Clash, Devo, Talking Heads, The Scorpions, Joan Jet, MegaDeth, REM, Stray Cats, ZZ Top, Guns & Roses, Queen, Tina Turner, Motor Head, U2, Aerosmith, Kiss, Cyndi Lauper and Metallica! I lucked out growing up GEN X in the 70s-80s!! Ya' could be any color, any sex, from any country or have any sexual orientation, we didn't give a shit as long as your music was good. I miss those days.....
Me too
I ❤ all music... MTV gave us the best of all worlds 🌎 ❤️
Chocolate rock band. Lol!!! That cracked me up!😂😂😂
Vernon Reid's solo in this always feels right on the edge of losing control and fits perfectly.
Vernon Reid is the most underrated guitarist in metal. And yes, a cult of personality is a group idolizing a specific person. And in that regard, Stalin and Ghandi are in the same category. And yes, When the mirror speaks, the reflection lies is a bar, and one most folks miss. When the followers repeat the catchphrases without context, it is almost always not what they think it is. It's a great song by a great band.
Love this song then and now. We definarely were a generation that hated the " status quo." Many of our songs reflect this setument. Im glad im part of the " old school" generation. Unfortunately, we have the biggest fight going on now. Color did not matter for a brief time.
Right. We all loved this song for a long time - we didn't care that they were chocolate - we cared because it completely rocked
@@andreadeamon6419
Amen.
Right, a "cult of personality" is when a leader or public figure is elevated to cult status, & people will believe anything they say. This band was absolute FIRE, & proved that rock is good for EVERYBODY. Thanks for your reaction.
Living Colour Is One of The Greatest Hard Rock Bands Ever!!!
see 40 years ago we all used to get along, we could still all get along if only people stop listening to nonsense from the media and social platforms and start living life
Vernon Reid is always cited as someone who was incredibly underrated during the height of their playing days. Just an awesome guitarist. These guys are still playing shows today. Check out some of their live stuff in 2023. Still the original lineup except the bass player from this video, who left the band in 1992.
I saw them last summer at a bbq in Youngstown. They lit the place up. They're a true to form rock band, regardless of era and regardless of the size of the crowd in front of them. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
The lead singer, Corey Glover, did a stint as Judas Iscariat in the tour of Jesus Christ Superstar with the original Ted Neeley. From the clips I’ve seen, Corey was fantastic!!!!! Great band! I always looked forward to seeing their video on MTV. When MTV actually played music videos…
Guitarist Vernon is one of the best guitarists ever, I remember buying first cassette of first release. Also Corey, lead singer, in the movie Platoon with Charlie Sheen in 86, good actor, great band.
You are on the right track. The song is about the media in general and how they can make a person look good, or look bad based on what they broadcast. They can make a bad leader look great or a good leader look bad based on what they want to tell you. At the end of the video, the girl just shakes her head and turns the tv off. Which probably the best thing that people can do.
This is the 3rd reaction video I have seen from young black men. The moment when you realize they are black is PURE JOY ❤❤❤❤ I was an 18 yo rocker chick and they were everything!!!!!!!!! These lyrics mean way more today.
Not to get political but the definition pretty much describes Donald Trump and the MAGA movement to a T.
Definition: Since the 20th century, “cult of personality” has been most often used to refer to charismatic leader cults, a type of personality cult which is based on a political leader and designed to enforce their power, magnify their ideology, and legitimize the rule of the government associated with them
It is the exact opposite of what you are saying, the song is talking about when you step out of the norms of the political state that has been controlling us for so long; people like John Kennedy, Martin Luther King, that became leaders- "when a leader speaks that leader dies.(lyrics in song)" Its leftist propaganda just to throw out there people are cultish over Trump; your ignoring all the policies he puts in place that generates a vibrant economy and peace across the world. Trump's biggest sin (against the cult in DC) is he does not support war and war is how all these deep state organizations make money and keep us in perpetual fear and take our rights away. They would have assassinated Trump by now, but its hard now a days with technology and the secret service (although there have been attempts). Instead, they are going after him through fake process crimes, currently, and the past Russia Hoax. - the BASED perspective
It can also be based on religious leaders..Jim Jones, David Koresh.
Trump isn't a politician - he's a business man. He has proven that.
Wrong. What you are seeing if the desperate hope for normalness away from the ridiculousness we are seeing nowadays. There's nothing wrong with admiring someone who shares your values and who you hope can bring us out of the current funk that this administration has seemed to be proud to put us in. I can't stand the in your face gaslighting. This "president" takes us all as a bunch of idiots. Same goes for his confused "Vice President" and his gaslighting press secretary. She's the worse. Trump is nothing more than one of "We the People" who got a golden opportunity to run for president to try and make things as great as they can get. The push back is ridiculous...as if they want us to fail. The current president is nothing more that a huge embarrassment. He could have stuck with hi billionaire lifestyle and lived in peace...and not have had a huge hate falsely created against him...but he wanted to do better for America. Its sad that people cannot see that. Its so in your face that certain people have become blind to it. Besides, we don 't live in a monarchy or dictatorship. Our Constitution does not allow it. We have the three sections for a balance of power. The government isn't who's in charge. They are only representatives of the people who voted them into office. They are not leaders. Those with the most power are those who sit in congress. The president is just a figurehead. I can't believe you seemingly would rather have a senile, feeble, weak, bumbling idiot as the person to represent this great country. This proves my point about it going down swirling. Besides, I have no idea how you are supposed to act otherwise towards a person who displays what you admire? Trump is a bit of an asshole and he's got a personality we Conservatives could do without but he's a hell of a lot better that what's sitting in the White House right now.
Or Barrack Obama and the progressives who are now telling us 2 and 2 is 5 and men can be women?
This one never gets old!!
Living Colour are legends. Still going strong. Vernon Reid is one of the most original guitarists ever in rock.
You picked up the message correctly. Its about how people will let other people -- especially famous people they idolize -- lead them around by the nose without thinking about what they are being told.
You said it your self. You never thought you would see a black rock band. That is the divide the media has put out since the late 70's. One of the biggest rock giants in the world was Jimi Hendrix, and so many others bro. But the powers in charge have done all they can to play us against each other. These guys seen it, and many more are finally opening their eyes.
My sister was fortunate enough to catch these guys at CBGBs when they were just starting out. She said they were insanely talented and tore that place up. I don't know anyone who wasn't impressed with this band when they appeared. This song was a huge hit.
I saw these cats live when they opened for the Rolling Stones in 1989 Dallas TX.
Don’t apologize for your dog. Everybody loves to see a cute pup.🙂
your are definitely on the right track..
Since the 20th century, “cult of personality” has been most often used to refer to charismatic leader cults, a type of personality cult which is based on a political leader and designed to enforce their power, magnify their ideology, and legitimize the rule of the government associated with them....
this was a HUGE hit back in the day...I still hear it on my local rock station today!👍
What do you mean, "Sorry about my dog?!" Bring that kiddo up to the camera! Looks like a good pupper!
These guys are from NYC and came out in the mid 80's. The guitar player's name is Vernon Reid, and he's considered one of the best guitarist in the world. Another song from them to check out is "Love Rears It's Ugly Head", you won't be disappointed.
Living Colour is such an intelligent and versatile band. I had the good fortune to meet them a few years ago and I will always cherish the experience. I first saw them in 1989 when they opened for The Rolling Stones. They still sound great!
It amazes me how quickly you have been able to decipher the meanings in the lyrics of metal & rock
Vernon Reid Is a Guitar GOD! Glad you liked this song, I've had it stuck in my head all day for no reason...
I already know you weren't ready for this. I was in highschool when this came out and we weren't ready for it. Vernon Reid is a guitar god and Corey Glover has an incredible voice. The drummer and bassist and time keeping machines too. Love those guys so much.
One of my favorite tunes of that decade. These guys are slaying it with their musicianship. Tight as a ship!
Fishbone! There's also a band from the 90s/early 00s called Course of Empire. They didnt make it much past local fame. They had 2 drummers (one a great POC). They hit TONS of issues as well.
Your interpretation is correct. The song is great and very thought provoking with a frightening message. They use images and personalities to direct mass thought. " I exploit you, still you love me" is an example. He says 'When a leader speaks that leader dies". meaning anyone who tries to topple the "norm' gets silenced. He tries to encourage listeners to think for themselves, hence the little girl turning of the TV. Love your channel and your enthusiasm. Keep it up!
Oh, yes, you got it right! Your analysis of the lyrics is spot on.
Another track you might like is "Sunless Saturday" by Fishbone. Hard rock, deep lyrics, and an unexpected sound. It's amazing.
They’re still touring - if they come thru, GO! They are 🔥🔥🔥 live!
Saw them live opening for the Rolling Stones back in 1989...it was brilliant.
This band has always been the real deal.
Great reaction to an epic tune... a real classic. If you like Living Colour you will also love Mother's Finest, from Atlanta GA started back in the 70s. They moved to Germany, where they got the airplay they deserved and were a huge hit there. Maybe do a reaction to their song "Fire" which is absolute 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
And yes, your interpretation is spot on about Tel-LIE-vision and how it is used to brainwash the masses.
Baby Jean Kennedy, o yeeeeeeeeaaaahhhh
This 100% - Fire, Baby Love, Piece of the Rock, and N***** can’t play Rock and Roll.
Truly an epic band and the best to ever come out of Atlanta.
I saw Mothers Finest in 1980 opening for Humble Pie and Angel in San Antonio. All three were AWESOME.
@@emerald1805 I saw them in 77. They opened for AC/DC and absolutely stole the show. So much so that after about the 3rd or 4th song people started leaving. 2 weeks later the whole tour was cancelled. That also happened when they scheduled a tour with Aerosmith. I believe that was later in the Fall of that year, maybe the next year. Hard to remember dates/seasons but it did happen. I will always remember that it happened. People don't believe me but idc.
You have a great mind to decipher this song as quickly as you did along with the excitement of a "chocolate rock" band. It's a remarkable piece of music, and still a heavy piece to think on today. And that guitar solo is so powerful, and one of my all time favorites. Total fire! Glad i found you, I'm subbed now.
This came out when I was in high school. The message is as powerful today and will remain so until our species extinction.
I can't tell you how much joy it brings me to see a young man your age discover this song. Singing along, banging your head, smiling and discovering the message and meaning.
Corey Glover's vocal power and range are as much on display here as Vernon Reid's volcanic eruptions of guitarification. Wil Calhoun and Muzz Skillings with the drums and bass are hammering out a beat that makes your feet move.
The whole Vivid album is a great listen. Lots of different sounds and styles are explored. Middle Man, The Glamour Boys and Open Letter To A Landlord are all worth a listen. Especially Landlord. That one really grabbed me.
You made my day watching you rock out to a favorite of mine. A timeless classic.
A cult of personally is basically someone who has following because of their personality, and how they can be portrayed (sometimes to the point where people will follow them and idolize them, even if they do terrible things).
Often a cult of personality can use a scripted (or sculptured if you prefer) image (via the media or other sources) to portray themselves in a way that people can relate to (hence the lyrics, "I know your anger, I know your dreams", "I've been everything you wanna be" & "I'm the smiling face of your TV").
Followers can forgive a cult of personality for awful atrocities (and still follow them, without question), no matter how many times they do it (or how many times they themselves are exploited), hence the lyrics "I exploit you, still you love me".
Followers will also believe everything that a cult of personality says (without question, and take it as gospel), even if it's not factually correct or is a straight up lie (even when there's evidence that proves what they were saying isn't right), which can give them immense power, hence the lyrics, "I tell you one and one makes three", and "You gave me fortune, you gave me fame".
Followers may also say someone was appointed by god, has god's backing or even say that god is pushing them to do things hence the lyric ..."You gave me power in your God's name".
FYI: Not every cult of personality (that has ever existed) is a bad person though, and in fact they reference Mahatma Gandhi (who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule, and in turn inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world) in the song.
They also mention JFK in the song - and he supposedly wasn't a bad person either.
51 year old long grey haired country boy. Head banging right along.
Love this tune!
The world needs more of this right up to today!
My mom was pen pals with the guitarists mom for a few years. This was my mom’s favorite band. I’m so glad I know of them because of her.
You nailed it. Such a fun song covering a dark topic
The dog cameo is great, we need more dog in our lives.
Yep... Black folks in rock!
And they are AWESOME too!
Still a relevant song 35 yrs later.
Amazing song and sobering message, still relevant today unfortunately. Vernon Reid is one amazing guitar player, so often overlooked, but he is up there with other great shredders ;-)
The lyrics are genius. The message is timeless. Through the ages people have risen to power through the force of their personality, for both good and bad. Politics is all about the cult of personality.
Got to see Living Colour open up for The Rolling Stones on The Stones "Steel Wheels" Tour in 1988 or 89 in Philly. LC was better than The Stones, I thought, and I got to tell Lead Singer Corey Glover my opinion when I met him in Florida about six months later. The Guitarist is Vernon Reid, and he is one of the best. Corey was also an actor, he was in the movie "Platoon". For a current idea of what a "Cult Of Personality" is, just look at the Republican Party. This song is more relevant today than when it was written.
saw this tour at the Astro dome in Houston
I agree about the gop
If I had had heard this song for the first time today I would have felt it was a commentary on Trump MAGA. And even though it’s 35 years old, it’s really about just that. Every generation has their cults and their personalities. This group is 🔥 the lead singer is Corey and he’s awesome. You should definitely react to more of their tracks.
This was a HUGE hit!
I loved this band when they came out, my brothers and I as children of Windrush parents, listed to everything, and it was nice to see black people playing music that we liked as well!
I saw them at Lollapalooza in 92 at the sandstone amphitheater in Kansas City, they were amazing live.
Saw them live back when they were touring for this album. Excellent live band!
Definitely an all-time favorite...On a totally different note, this song makes me drive soooo fast 🤣🤣🤣
One of my favourite groups is a band called Roachford. Sooo many good songs. They're an all black group from the UK. Highly recommend their song Only To Be With You.
That’s Vernon Reid on guitar, he’s great!
👍🎸🔥.... Though he's on the Top 100 Guitarist of all Time.... Vernon doesn't get the credit he deserves. He's a badass guitarist 🎸
Hello from Cody Wyoming! You're awesome...keep it up 😊 great song and strong message...all black band...FACTS
Recently found your channel. No one ever gives a hint about them boys. I so enjoy seeing everybody's reaction when they figure it out. Eyes go wide and jaws hit the floor then comes the phrase "OMG! Are they...?" And then everyone rocks the f**k out.
Brother, I'm a white dude and when this came out, I was in the Army and most of the guys that I hung with (no matter their skin color) rocked this song. As I watch you experience this for the first time, I now realize that our experiences with this song were different but we all rocked it together!
My best friend and i jammed to this tune when it came out.....amazing video....this had to be one of the last videos he had seen before he died in an auto accident shortly after he left my house....miss ya bro...this tune reminds me of that weekend everytime i hear it.
Love the energy. Proof again music has no color. Music has no age. Music has sexuality. Music is for everyone to enjoy. The best bridge to over come gaps..
'Open Letter to a Landlord' is EPIC... my favourite song off the album. AWESOME reaction!
I was in California stationed at Camp Pendleton in the Marines. These guys are fantastic. Seen them a couple times in the late 80's. Hard Rock and metal got nothing to do with color brother, all about the music. Thanks for your channel.
Great song. Great message. Another song with a message by Living Colour is "Open Letter To A Landlord"...amazing song. My favorite by them.
I absolutely love your reaction my man! This song is fire af 🔥
Vernon Reid was/IS absolutely one of the most underrated guitarists of the modern era.
One of our first all black rock groups. which was an amazing break thru at the time. They werent how ever, the first black rockers. Such a great song with tons of meaning no matter what time period were in. Love the vocalist Corey Glover's and guitarist Vernon Reid's energy. Thanx so much, take care, Peace
"it's a chocolate rock band!" 😂 The best chocolate rock band ever!🤘🏼
Never be sorry for your dog. Im sure he/she would get lots of love from your supporters. ❤✌️
RAGE IN THE MACHINE - black singer - rock rap band - would be up your alley.
Their debut album still holds up. Saw these guys open up for Aerosmith about a decade ago. Great show!
Saw these guys in back in 87 and immediately called my boss at NBC in development.
Of course, they were already signed and making this album but man! Their energy was indescribable .
They were also way too freaking intelligent for a lot of the bands playing the strip at the time.
Another artist to dive into is Bob Dylan. More as a writer than a singer. However one of his recent songs is quite prophetic. The song is "Murder Most Foul". It speaks a great deal about JFK. I think you will like the words!
My favorite black band banger! Loved your reaction to it.
Can't tell you how many times I've used the phrase "cult of personality" since politics got all messed up. To win an election, it's not about what you'll do, it's do you have a "cult" that will follow you off a cliff? When this came out in '88, the cold war was at an all-time high. The US had a cult around Reagan, England around Thatcher, and Russia around Gorbachev. So wild that we have the same issues 30+ years later!
This band is criminally underrated!!! They should’ve been as big as Van Halen or Def Leppard! Vernon Reid is an OUTSTANDING guitarist!
I think cult of personality is the leaders, actors, & artist that collect a following and influence them with their opinions (their own or provided opinion). TY for the thoughtful reaction!
A certain ex president
@@robynhurley5119 yep, and all the rest of the politicians.
Other great songs by them are Desperate People, Open Letter To A Landlord, and Middle Man
Shon, your reactions impress, inspire & delight. I am happy for people who love music with an open mind. There are so many profoundly extraordinary Living Colour songs. An epic highlight is a transcendent "Flying" from World Cafe Live in Philadelphia on 12.1.2014. It's on RUclips. I was in the front row, in front of Vernon Reid's amps +. This once in a lifetime performance, happened during a socially jarring & rueful day, & the emotion of the evening was palpable. I've been priviledged to be friendly with Vernon, Will, Doug, Corey, & Muzz since the first time they played Philly @ Chestnut Cabaret in 1988. They are each true souls, whose gifts keep on giving. Living Colour forever. Keep rocking beautifully 😎 Shon.
Thank you !!!.... this song is an absolute banger
These guys should have been way bigger
Hope you continue your reactions to this band. Unfortunately most only react to this one because it was the band's big hit. But this whole album was fire. I highly recommend the song "Middle Man". Can't remember if they released a video for it but should be some audio somewhere 👍👍
When you found out the singer was black, that was my exact reaction, since i grew up with guitar hero 3, enjoying this song so many times, and thinking that the singer was white.
People were actually awake back in the day, then they fell asleep somewhere along the way. I recommend Free Your Mind by En Vogue. Also a breakout song.
They are great! Another song I love of theirs is "Open Letter to a Landlord".
These guys are still touring and sound amazing. I'll be seeing them in September!
Love this band. This song absolutely Rocks!😁
Love this song!!
You could never be wrong about the meaning of a song. If it makes you think then the artist did their job well
I clicked this video for the obligatory "Wait! They're BLACK?!" and was not disappointed. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It just cracks me up that younger reactors see this band for the first time, and flip out at that reveal. In any case, this song is a banger, and these guys are masters of their instruments.
"A chocolate rock band" had me 😭😂
Check out more Living Color.
They are still at it & they don't have a bad song.
Middle Man is my personal favorite, but they have so many good songs that cover different genres of music.
Crazy.
Just blessed I got to see them on their first tour, in like, 1988. Free show even. Corey Glover was AMAZING!
Don't sleep on this band. Vernon Reid is a killer on the axe.
This band was created around a (at that time) new black guitar prodigy. The song is about how people who become adored by the public can often have negative outcomes in their lives.
Great song. One of my favorite hard rock tunes of all time.
