But don't you think a banner message would violate the restraining order?
    Asking for a friend.

500 feet from people or objects, 500 feet restraining order, is that a coincidence? I think not.

Yes. Communication is a violation. The restraining order prohibits the defendant from initiating direct or indirect contact with an alleged victim. It may be considered restraining order violation if a defendant texts, calls or emails an alleged victim.

Bryan, I need one that says "Randy, you are the father". Several years ago I found out that I had a daughter that I didn't know about. She didn't know about me either. After taking a DNA test, she tracked me down and came to visit. We went flying together and when she went back to San Antonio, she proceeded to get here pilot's license. Within a year, she moved here and we are now 8 miles apart and have side-by-side hangars and fly together all of the time. I was either telling you about her at Rough River or it might have been Kris Patasnik or Jason Schappert. You guys look so much alike.

My dad used to work as a ground's crewman for a friend that towed banners with is 450 Stearman biplane. Instead of the grapple hook, the friend would start the takeoff roll with the banner hooked on. My dad would hold the pole with the letters connected. The Stearman would take off right in front of him and "snatch" the banner pole out of his hand.

I used to tow banners in the 70's and early 80's. You got really good at slow flight and on a windy day, you could count on some stall practice as well! When we were flying cubs, my boss would tell me that if the airspeed needle got up to 40 (mph), then you are going too fast! We flew many different planes such as L-19s, cubs, Stearmans (220hp to 600h.p.), Agwagons, and even once, my boss flew a banner with his skywriter T-6! One of my most memorable flights involved flying a banner with a 180 h.p. Skyhawk on a day that was so windy, that you could "park" the airplane over the crowd.
In answer to your question, The planes we normally flew had a grapple hook on a short rope attached to a release on the tail wheel mount . The banner had a lead pole attached to the first letter. A polypropylene rope (called a tow line) was attached to the lead pole. On the other end of the rope was a loop. To pick up the banner, the loop was stretched out between a couple of pickup poles and fastened with clothespins. The pilot would takeoff and drop the hook end of the grapple hook out the window (the other end attached to the release). He would then fly between the poles and pull up to peel the tow line and banner off the ground. To drop the banner, he would fly over the drop point and pull the release for the grapple hook.
Those were fun times I'll never forget and really taught me to fly by the seat of my pants.

The way they pick up banners where I fly is another level of intense. Instead of flying low, catching it, and pulling up like what you saw, they dive down steep and pull up quick swinging the grappling hook like a pendulum into the catch line! (I made up the name "catch line". If it is actually called something, I apologize for my ignorance.) I don't know why they do it this way more difficult way but it is fun to watch. It usually takes a few tries for the pilot to time the swing of the hook just right to get the line which is only about 4 feet above the ground. It has to be perfectly timed.

I towed for about 3 years. We used 160 hp C-150s with a STOL kit on the wings....flow fences and a drooped leading edge cuff that ran the whole span of the wing. Tow with 10 degrees of flaps at 60 mph indicated. Not the safest way to build time.

OK, but how do you finish your banner flight? Will that require a whole 'nother video? Like when a certain family member of mine was being taught to waterski, they forgot to tell him that when he falls down, he needs to let go of the tow rope.
Actually, I hear that the plane is supposed to drop the banner at the airport, then land separately. We have an airport nearby that has a banner towing operation. It's the second closest airport to us, excepting LAX... and that other airport which I always forget about, because memory of it goes straight outta... my brain.

I once towed a banner over the Grand Canyon for a wedding that was being performed near the cliff. However the groom called me later and said he wasn't going to pay because it was supposed to say ERIC LOVES SHARON. "NOT #!" ERIC LOVES BETTY !!!😂😂😂 Just kidding, I did it right. Don't do it! Simple you will burn up your engine. It takes a lot of power to pull that billboard. Add the price of a new engine to the price of your towing!
