Hi And Thank You For Sharing This Very Informative Your An Amazing Doctor My Question To You Is I Have Severe Dry Eyes I Began Using Ocusoft Wipes To Clean My Eye Lashes Does This Help With Having Dry Eyes Keeping Your Eye Lashes Clean?
I take Melatonin 4mg for sleep and can't do without it. Bonus for me as my mother had macular disease so I consider it as a preventative. Thank you for the information.
I usually take it, around 1 to 1.5mg. Except when I'm really sleepy when I go to sleep :) It definitely works for me, though it doesn't with relaxation - it's not an antidepressive, just to be more sleepy. It's especially useful when I get fully awake by a shower directly before getting to bed.
If you are concerned about messing with your body's natural production of Melatonin, know this: 95% of the Melatonin you produce is produced by the Mitochondria, mostly in your Gastrointestinal tract, when you are exposed to natural light (i.e. morning and daytime sunlight). The remaining 5% of Melatonin is produced by the brain in the Pineal gland at night after sunset and when you stop looking at your phone. Supplementing with Melatonin will not have a measurable effect on your bodies natural production for these reasons. Most people are already messing with their body's natural production of Melatonin by hiding from the sun all day and doom scrolling social media in bed.
I take about 25 mg and my girlfriend has been taking 100 for over a year. I haven't seen that they've found any upper limit on the dosage that causes any harm. Certainly workingfor her. She's definitely her best healthiest self ever.
Was going to state the same. There is no need for melatonine supplementation if you don't disrupt your circadian rhythm. Morning sun exposure, outdoor time and blocking artificial light at night. Dining lights after sunset and using a filter for screens and blublockers in case you really need to use screens or be indoors under LED light. I can guarantee anyone trying this will feel way better and with a lot more energy also because you will rest. Sadly some people rather take a pill
I have taken 3 mg of melatonin for about the last 30 years. I am 76 years old now. I have a gene mutation for M D. About 4 years ago i was diagnosed with wet MD and immediately started on monthly eye injections. Also, i have severely dry eyes. So i have little faith that it works, yet i take it anyway because of the other benefits touted. I think the answer may be the infrared light exposure in the morning. So now I'm trying that. I'm so happy to find this channel. ❤
I take melatonin for sleep and osteoporosis. This video is great news because I have a couple of genes for macular degeneration. I also take lutein and zeaxanthin for eye health.
When I was diagnosed with early stages of glaucoma I was trying to find out what supplements I could take to help with lowering eye pressure. I found articles and videos that said Melatonin could do that. I listened to Melatonin experts and they said that Melatonin stays active in the body for only 2h no matter what dosage you take. Some said that therapeutic dosages are in the hundreds, which is hard to get. The highest I could find was 10mg tablets. The specialists also said that it's not true that the body stops producing Melatonin when you take it. It didn't do anything for my eye pressure at all but maybe it did help my eyes in different ways. After all that I read about Melatonin I'm not afraid to use high dosages anymore. Oh and yes, it's good for the brain. I even give some to my dog who started to show signs of doggy dementia.

I've been using melatonin for around three weeks, and I've realized it's really drying out my eyes. So, I've chosen to reduce my usage to just twice a week. I'm feeling good now, getting enough moisture in my eyes without it.

I take a fairly high dose of Melatonin every night, 20 mg. I just had my Eyes checked to get a new pair of Verilux lenses. At 80, I have no sign of Cataracts which I'm sure is because of using Hexane Free Organic Castor Oil in my Eyes. I mentioned this earlier. I also had no sign of Glaucoma or Macular Degeneration, and my new lens prescription is the same as it was eight years ago.

My eye doctor in Westfield, Dr. Andy Rosenfarb (wonderful healer), has melatonin in his supplements!! I have dry AMD and this does give me hope. I am a lead singer in a working band and an artist! I need my vision and AMD is so scary! Thanks for posting! Really enjoy your videos!
I was going mention @DrAndyRosenfarb, has he been able to help you? I've watched some of his videos. Hydrogen, HBOT and electrical stimulation interests me.
I have severe dry eyes. I took melatonin to sleep every night and I had to stop because I was getting very vivid dreams which made me suddenly wake up and open my eyes forcefully (I use retaine at night) which resulted in cornea erosions that reoccurred very frequently. My eyes probably were the driest it has ever been then. I guess it wasn’t for me. I much prefer omega 3 and lutein
Okay but we produce melatonin naturally if we dont mess up our circadian rhythm - get sunshine (early morning in particular) and control artificial light after sunset (no overhead lights, softer amber or red light). Sunlight creates INTRACELLULAR melatonin btw, as opposed to melatonin that comes from pineal gland at night. Melatonin combats oxidative stress, it’s not just for sleep.
I tried taking melatonin for sleep, and it made my limbs (legs and arms) twitch for the longest time trying to fall asleep. I found out later my Mother also had the same side effects.
Melatonin totally messed me up. Half the dose and I was woozy the entire day, hardly knew what day it was. A senior client took it on advice of a relative and fell down asleep while in the shower, bloodying her nose. Lucky that an aide was there..
I don't know why people say talk to your healthcare provider when almost nobody I know has a good doctor. There are no good doctors anymore lol not to mention you're going to spend a few hundred dollars just to go tell him about a supplement LOL. Healthcare is a joke
Still debated in the profession. While some blue light filters have been shown to help with melatonin production, there is question to how effective this is compared to the sleep deprivation caused by other stimuli. Such as phone use or other light sources indoors.
NOTE: For DIABETECS, some diabetics have a rough time taking any melatonin. It can, & does raise blood sugar substantially. Start out with a very LOW dose, & continue to check BS about 5 hours after taking it, etc.
Likely cause: (In addition to the direct protective effects) Getting people to sleep and stop using blue light emitting devices, and to be awake less during dark hours and hence exposed to less LED blue light. This all reduces blue light injury to the retina. It also then triggers the circadian rhythm, and the daily hormone cycle. Macular degeneration is no longer limited to older people (as a lifetime accumulation of damage). The intense blue light injury from LED lights and devices now make this a risk for everyone, especially children. The amount of damage LED lights cause is extreme. And this doesn't even address the cancers that LED lights causes cause. Or it's many other damages. Better answer - get rid of all LED exposure possible. Then add melatonin for sleep. Diabetes is also directly related due to the adverse hormone impacts of LED light. So too are obesity, cardiovascular disease, and depression among others. So too are other eye maladies associated with the two color peak distribution for most LED lamps that cause the eye to be unable to optimally focus and to instead hunt between the two colors, making everything blurry, and causing enormous eye strain in the short and long fiber muscles. Pain in and behind the eye, or headaches and light sensitivity may be early symptoms. Do note the two different uses the body has for melatonin. Most widely known: as a hormone triggering the circadian rhythm. Less widely known, melatonin production and use in mitochondria is essential for cell energy production and health. That is driven by infrared light exposure. And LED lamps intentionally eliminate ALL IR light generation. This has huge negative effects on the immune system and health.
I'd be super interested in content about treating cornea scars/opacity, I recently had major improvements in my dry eye symptoms which reduces my inflammation however, there is still some inflammation remaining especially in my left eye where I have a scar, very likely due to a herpes infection I had when I was a child. I hope the remaining inflammation will also resolve in the coming months but I'm afraid it's here to stay since scars or cornea opacity aren't supposed to improve over time right?
@@cameronf2894 I got dry eye at age 17 with double vision and inflammation, my schirmers Test was fine and recently I had meibography done and the doc told me I would only have moderate loss of my meibomian glands and they looked fine. Out of pure despair and because of the video on this channel I went into the pharmacy and got omega 3 pills. I have been taking 2 grams of Omega-3 daily since April and all my symptoms have improved, however I have chalazions regularly as of right now but I hope this is just a phase. It sounds so stupid to me, before I would have never believed that supplements could have such a big impact on my eyes. No doc ever recommended me taking Omega-3s. Only one doc recommended me to eat more nuts, which I dismissed as I was already eating plenty of them. I took Ciclosporin A and steroid eye drops only to find out 5 years later that I could have very likely resolved the issue by taking Omega-3s six years ago. It's honestly life changing for me because I was afraid of what might happen in the future because of inflammation and constant use of steroid eye drops. I regained hope and a lot of life-quality again. No more worrying about how my eyes look because of inflammation, no more burning and my eyes stopped being desert dry in the evenings. I even see better because my tear layer improved. I'm hoping that my eyes eventually will turn back to normal healthy eyes.
@@cameronf2894 I started taking Omega3s in april, it has really been a life saver. My schirmers was fine and I had an exam of my meibomian glands where my doc told me I had mild loss but they looked fine. I had been suffering from double vision, my eyes being dry like a desert, especially in the evenings and constant inflammation of my cornea. I took CsA and steroid eye drops for five years. When probably all I had to do was take omega3s. I started doing so out of pure dispair and thanks to this channel.
Scars on the cornea usually do not improve much at all. However, there is some research on using losartan eye drops (usually takes 4+ months) to help resolve some of the scarring. I have a few patients undergoing the treatment with the understanding that it is off label and not FDA approved at this time. Can cost a few hundred dollars a month for the medication. But perhaps you can find a corneal specialist or other doctor who specializes in anterior segment/ocular disease that is familiar with the research and would be willing to try it/work with you.
This is a dumb question but do we know for sure that it’s the melatonin responsible for these benefits and not simply the improved sleep that the melatonin provides?
95% of the melatonin produced in the body is produced in the mitochondria during the day in response to red light. The pineal gland produces a small but important amount during sleep. Always beneficial to look at the work of Russel J. Reiter at Uof Texas,San Antonio who has authored more than 400 published papers + a textbook on melatonin. The focus on sleep is understandable but probably lots of mitochondrial investigation still to do.
Good job. I take at least 3 mg per night. I like being able to sleep. And the occasional vivid dreams are always a bonus, certainly better than anything from Hollywood. I'm always in mine! (As a sidenote, I have been taking melatonin for 13 months, and started having dry eye symptoms four months ago. Nothing I've read said there is a correlation.)
Thanks! Dry eye is pretty complex and many things contribute to it. Sleep is supposed to help. I plan to post a video reviewing studies on sleep and eye health in a few weeks.
Dear Allen, I am going to read more about the hormone Melatonin. I want to explore its connection with practicing sports, especially Yoga. It is known that hormone production is boosted during Yoga practice, particularly at the end of the class when participants fall asleep during the Shavasana part. This indicates that Melatonin is produced enough to allow yogis to fall into a deep sleep and reap the benefits of the hormone naturally. With this idea, I could explore one of the benefits of Yoga for the human body, especially the eyes. will mention you in the video
I have ERM which thankfully has not yet required surgery but I would like to slow the progress of the disease. Might melatonin help this condition? I occasionally take 3mg of melatonin for sleep so I have it in the house. Is it worth rrying?
Very interesting information. My dad developed wet MD around 80 years of age. He became legally blind. I moved in with him as his caregiver after his girlfriend passed away. We had 8 1/2 wonderful years together until he passed away at 91 years of age.💔 I get yearly checks for MD since it can be genetic, plus I will be 70 next year.
Some of the functional medicine docs that I follow say that it's been debunked that supplementing with melatonin will turn off your own production. I personally have not found this to be the case and I take melatonin fairly regularly for 20 years now. I sleep just as well when I don't take it but occasionally I have insomnia and I feel better when I take it the next day so I take it 2/3 of the time I'm going to sleep. I have a high pressure job so I take it the night before anytime I have to work and be on point first thing the next day. Melatonin can trigger autophagy in the cells. Red light creates melatonin in our cells so this might be part of why red light therapy helps improve eyesight for middle-aged and older people. I have found it to be remarkable for my eyes
I took melatonin myself during a very stressful time in my life. I myself find I can sleep just as well without it but I do sleep rather deep and hard when I do use it. Now I only take it when I am traveling or at a convention. But the right light activating melatonin in the cell is something I will need to study more myself.
I have not really found a supplement that made a great difference to my eyes. Only l-taurine seems to have an effect- I took 2 grams one day, and exactly that day, I noticed I could see better.
Please please read this. I take 5 mg at least three or four times a week and I do see much better no side effects. I don’t think I need 5 mg. I can probably get by with three but it’s hard to find 3 mg for sale.
sorry to say, but I already knew and experienced that myself, and it is not just eyes, Melatonin in higher quantities is able to remove a lot of disease and whatever bad in your body. I would say strange, but at least with the eyes, I have seen improvements myself for my chalazia. ✅️
Would Melatonin help with a newly diagnosed supposed cataract, and also a supposed growth caused by UV RAYS, the reason i ask this is i went to an optometrist to get new glasses, he said i had both of those conditions of which i am not too sure about as there is no cloud over my pupil, so the cataract i think is false as i can see clearly, say at least 85% clear. The optometrist is a very reputable company here in New Zealand and Australia
I quit taking melatonin for sleep because it makes me drowsy and helps me get to sleep but I wake up like it's morning in an hour or two. Perhaps I could include it in my morning routine...LOL!
Not to be picky but I disagree with "melatonin will help you relax." I've been taking it nightly for 25 years and I think its benefits for sleep come from a "sleep mindset" and not "relaxed muscles." But, as Monk says, I could be wrong now.
Curious - are those with type 2 diabetes - does this happen to lessen the glaucoma/other eye thangs for diabetics? (My mom and dad are/were type two, Im type two as well)
Thanks for your response. Melatonin is classed as a medicine in the UK. Only available by prescription. My doctor will not prescribe sleep medication of any sort. Last time I asked he said they are not necessary. Also dangerous. Many years ago I could buy it in the chemist. I found it helpful when doing shift work. I found it worked well for me back then.@@mballer

Just recently I learned the most amount of melatonin is produced during the day time with direct sunlight exposure
I used a melatonin based toner for my face and noticed my dry eyes symptoms were reduced. I think it gets absorbed through the skin too.
What toner is this? Do you remember?
@@squidleyskidley hey sorry for the late reply, it was Dr Teals Melatonin witch hazel toner
Many thanks , a large study, interesting, thank you 👍
Okay but we produce melatonin naturally if we dont mess up our circadian rhythm - get sunshine (early morning in particular) and control artificial light after sunset (no overhead lights, softer amber or red light).
Oh wow I have never heard that before! Thanks for sharing
How could anyone repeat the study if they don't describe the dosage used?
Hey Doc do you know if the supplement Claroxan advanced is any good?
Please make this a series!
A series on vitamins/ supplements?
@@DoctorEyeHealth My mistake, I wrote this comment on the wrong video 😂
Still, great video though 👍
I love your videos on developing research topics!
I take up to 40mg melatonin plus ashwagandha to get to sleep. And sometimes GABA and ibuprofen too.
Would minimizing screen time and gaining a healthy amount of sleep produce similar effects over the course of one’s own life time?
Difficult to say at this time, but I am planning a video on the research on sleep and eye health in the next few weeks.
Melatonin totally messed me up. Half the dose and I was woozy the entire day, hardly knew what day it was.
A senior client took it on advice of a relative and fell down asleep while in the shower, bloodying her nose. Lucky that an aide was there..
Me too. Very dozy the following day. Zzzzz
I don't know why people say talk to your healthcare provider when almost nobody I know has a good doctor. There are no good doctors anymore lol not to mention you're going to spend a few hundred dollars just to go tell him about a supplement LOL. Healthcare is a joke
What does this mean for blue light filters?
Still debated in the profession. While some blue light filters have been shown to help with melatonin production, there is question to how effective this is compared to the sleep deprivation caused by other stimuli. Such as phone use or other light sources indoors.
Unrelated :My Doctor diagnosed EBMD. I've read up on it, but I am still clueless. Could you please explain this someday?
Yes! I have many patients with it. I will produce a short for it soon!
For those taking this, does it increase blood sugar level due to blocking insulin production as some says?
NOTE: For DIABETECS, some diabetics have a rough time taking any melatonin.
It can, & does raise blood sugar
substantially.
Start out with a very LOW dose, & continue to check BS about 5 hours after taking it, etc.
how come ? never heard of that wow
Does it have effect on cataracts?
interesting correlation, seems you'd thus get a greater benefit from daily red light therapy
perhaps!
This has huge negative effects on the immune system and health.
damn.. here i am on my phone all day long.. with those blue lights
Holy 😮
do you think it could potentially help out with fast tear evaporation issues?
Melatonin reduces VEGF, are there any studies comparing it to anti VEGF shots in reduction capabilities?
Thank you
Take as need many years, useful.
I read about this in a book long before computers.
I wonder if they used melatonin with the magnesium base or the calcium base?
I'd be super interested in content about treating cornea scars/opacity,
I recently had major improvements in my dry eye symptoms which reduces my inflammation however, there is still some inflammation remaining especially in my left eye where I have a scar, very likely due to a herpes infection I had when I was a child.
I hope the remaining inflammation will also resolve in the coming months but I'm afraid it's here to stay since scars or cornea opacity aren't supposed to improve over time right?
How did you improve your dry eyes?
I would like to know food sources I could get the melatonin instead of a supplement ? Is that possible/equal to a capsule? Which foods ?
I have been getting a lot of comments about this! I have honestly never studied melatonin in food sources so I will do some digging!
Yes, just made essentially the same comment. Melatonin is so misunderstood.
Thanks for sharing this and the reference!
Mitochondria/ATP are definitely the most interesting part of the cell.😁
Thanks for this info ❤
Happy to help! Thanks for watching and for the comment!
It’s strange to me how you did not mention sun light and how important it is for the eyes and how getting sunlight produces melatonin.
Wow! Thanks for sharing that. Happy to hear you had such a great relationship with your father!
We will. Just wait. For Dr fauci to recommend melatonin if we have macular degeneration
I have been diagnosed with ERM and would like to stop the progression of the disease. Might melatonin help with ERM?
What about Omega 3 doctor?
Does wearing sleep masks nightly also help with that?
I am not sure, but I suppose I could look into research on sleep and sleep masks.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Thank you, I heard it increases melatonin production naturally in the body.
does Nordic omega 3 is the right lpc-dha supplement. I have glaucoma and want to find the right omega 3.
I’ve been using a melatonin nasal spray at night. Any info on whether that would help?
I honestly didn't know that melatonin was available in a nasal spray! haha
@@DoctorEyeHealth it works really well!
I have not really found a supplement that made a great difference to my eyes. Only l-taurine seems to have an effect- I took 2 grams one day, and exactly that day, I noticed I could see better.
Did you have eye problems before that?
Are you a meat eater or more vegetarian?
It's interesting something could happen so quickly.
Please please read this. I am 19 years old and i have myopia of -1.5 -1.25 cyl -0.25 -0.25 so im currently studying computer science engineering and after graduation i have to work 9-10hrs a day infront of screen ..so my question is should i pursue in this field or should i change after graduation..i cant focus properly because of the fear of myopia progression and further things
How about daibitic like me what supplement or vitamin in my eyes to take
Interesting
I take 5 mg at least three or four times a week and I do see much better no side effects. I don’t think I need 5 mg. I can probably get by with three but it’s hard to find 3 mg for sale.
Agree that it’s hard to find 3mg
Unfortunately you cannot buy melatonin in the U.K. you have to get your doctor to give you a prescription
mucho muy interesante
sorry to say, but I already knew and experienced that myself, and it is not just eyes, Melatonin in higher quantities is able to remove a lot of disease and whatever bad in your body.
Hi Doc, could you do a video on long term permanent damage from OTC whitening drops?
Yeah I can see what I can do! Thanks for the idea!
I quit taking melatonin for sleep because it makes me drowsy and helps me get to sleep but I wake up like it's morning in an hour or two. Perhaps I could include it in my morning routine...LOL!
Maybe the near IR lamp panel might do it.
any effects on dementia ??
Will it reduce eye floaters
no
no
Not to be picky but I disagree with "melatonin will help you relax." I've been taking it nightly for 25 years and I think its benefits for sleep come from a "sleep mindset" and not "relaxed muscles." But, as Monk says, I could be wrong now.
Can you guys and girls share the dosage you take and your experiences?
Curious - are those with type 2 diabetes - does this happen to lessen the glaucoma/other eye thangs for diabetics?
(My mom and dad are/were type two, Im type two as well)
Interesting but not available in the UK.😢
Is it illegal to import it?
Could you get a prescription for sleep?
Thanks for your response. Melatonin is classed as a medicine in the UK. Only available by prescription. My doctor will not prescribe sleep medication of any sort. Last time I asked he said they are not necessary. Also dangerous. Many years ago I could buy it in the chemist. I found it helpful when doing shift work. I found it worked well for me back then.@@mballer
Good info!!!
Thanks for watching!
Anyone has tried it? What dose did u guys use
Near infrared sunlight !!

Doctor, My vision keeps getting blurry. Day after day, I have been waking up with these yellow things around my eyes, Sometimes they are dry, and sometimes they are like mucous. Is there anything I can do to get rid of this problem? And how can I prevent my vision from getting blurry
Please get an appointment with an ophthalmologist.
What are the chances it may also be beneficial for ChoroidalNeoVascularisation due to angoid streaks?
Tough to say but there are publications showing melatonin helps reduce the signaling that occurs leading to choroidal neovascularization.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Thanks!
Nothing new. Dr. Pierpaoli italian researcher already discovered this many many years ago and about 10 years ago he developed a specific melatonin supplement called "Provision".
how do i get this in UK any links ?
I am not sure what the regulations are on melatonin in the UK, i will have to look into it.
I take 40mg a night
ive been using melatonin every night for like 3 years
5 - 10 mg
