    They really should have had a "Reality or Fiction" option like the records and romance versions in 3 kingdoms. Maybe "Myth or Material" or something where the reality version has the figures they have now, but the mythical version has giants and minotaurs etc. As for going more accurate, I'm very excited for the Age of Bronze mod for Rome II, it looks like it's basically an entire game's worth of content: the bronze age total war we've really wanted.

      I think the problems with the Records/Romance divide in 3K showed why this probably wouldn't have worked. It's already hard for CA to keep both sides remotely balanced, and it can't help the fact that Records feels like a version of Romance minus a couple features (namely character abilities). Troy's setting would make this even harder because at least the Romance was mostly just about superhumans, not gods and monsters. Putting Lu Bu from a single entity into a cavalry unit is much simpler and feels less gimped then downgrading from a mythical minotaur into the...dude in Troy.

So many amazing empires and civilizations from that time period that would provide so much faction diversity. Not to mention that this policy of democracy comes much later than the era of troyjan war as depicted by Homer. Troy saga - 12,13 th century BC/ Athenian democracy 507 BC. I was very happy about getting this game for free when it released on Epic Games store. I got pretty bored with it around the late-mid game when I started invading Greece (playing as Hector) and had to kill Agamemnon for the third time. I also didn't like how red vs blue everything was. Playing against a united Greece all determined to kill you while your own allies were busy fucking around and getting themselves killed was pretty grading and it didn't leave much room around for diplomacy.

    • @happycompy

    You must love the game now that Mythos mode exists?
    Historical mode is also fantastic with the way you can customize the General's Bodyguard unit.

  • @Hoi4o
    @Hoi4o 3 года назад +22

    Good video, however I don't agree with your criticisms on several points. Let me address them:
    1. The devs clearly aimed for a realistic depiction of the Bronze Age Greek world, NOT a mythological one. From the resource system to the visuals of the units, it's clear they aimed for historical accuracy. Why would they ruin that historical immersion by adding actual mythological units, magic or other fantasy stuff klike that? The "Truth behind the myth" approach fits perfectly in this realistic approach for the game.
    2. Simply reskinning the Warhammer units would have been really cheap and would have made the game look like a cash grab.
    3. This game is not simply a TW game set in the Bronze Age, it's specifically set during the Trojan war, as described in Homer's works. Including other factions like hittites or egyptians would have made the game just a generic TW game set in the Bronze Age, not a game focused on Troy and the war for it and Helen.
    4. The unique faction mechanics and unique questlines and heroes for each faction DO make the game replayable. The game also offers a lot of flavor and story.
    5. You asked where are the sea peoples. The acheans ARE one of the sea peoples :)

    • @happycompy
      @happycompy  3 года назад +5

      Thanks for watching! Yeah I should've put in the script that I'm not super familiar with the Iliad, so for the people who are familiar, I'm not sure how much this game scratches that itch. From your comment it sounds like this game is perfect for Iliad fans, which is cool.

      @@happycompy They really aimed for something historical with mythical falvor, and if so they did it fine imo. If you read unit description for Sirens for example it says that Sirens described by Homer probably have been a bit more poetic version of port towns pr*stitutes which really lured marines, so they made unit human. It really makes you think when recruiting a unit of those women. I mean, really xD you're hiring a bunch of pr*stitues with slings(oh yeah, and the lure ability) :D They kinda wanted to show origins of those mythical creatures that could have come from real stuff. I didn't expect that, but honestly that's cool in some way

    - boring duels
    - single units op
    - bad unit collision
    - unit models look like I'm smashing action figures into each other rather then constant synced animations
    - unit models have hitpoints instead of rng chance to die in a synced blade exchange
    - difficulty ruins the already flat infantry meta by giving AI flat bonuses instead of just giving the AI bigger armies, meaning chease tactics with ranged units rain supreme
    - having to recruit a general for each army and army upkeep depending on number of armies means you cant customize garrisons like in the old games by just leaving a couple of units behind
    - lack of cavalry takes away from the stone, paper scissor principle
    - infantry doesnt have interesting weigth mechanics despite the whole game being about it, heavy units should be able to push light infantry back and thereby break the enemy line

    What upsets me about this game is it's a never explored era and deserved alot of attention. This part of history is full of myth and legend but if they would focused on making the campaign reach to ancient Egypt and middle east as well as the map they ended up with and focused on more realism with these legends fighting with their men like they did in actuality. Achilles had his mermidons he didnt fight alone and was of course just a man not a God. You could of focused more on unit and army bluffs with these famous leaders. Like putting Achilles into a spear unit and leaving his mermidons to fight by themselves or leave them out of the battle instead of risking losing men. And when achilles is with this spear unit they get buffed moral and attack or something similar to make him decisive on the battlefield but in a realistic way. There is no doubt men like achilles inspired all they encountered but they wernt actual demise gods

    • @SavageHenry777
      @SavageHenry777 3 года назад +1

      "achilles" is no more real than the mythological character. That's the only mention of him we have. I think if you get to the point where you're featuring this story and these characters, it is much more authentic to go all-in and not try and change the original but rather capture it. They should have divine intervention and heroics etc. Trying to be all realistic makes no sense, may as well make a bronze age total war then and not focus on Troy.

    I really enjoy this game. Specifically the change to the economy. I love the idea of actually trading for resources outside of gold and having different resources in different regions and actually encouraging trade. I also really liked the way they implemented the heroes. They felt powerful, but not game breaking. If you used them right you could win battles where you were completely outnumbered but at the same time if you knew what you were doing you could also overcome enemy heroes with good strategy. The only real issues I encountered were the AI magically getting way too many resources way too early in the game compared to what you could get. This allowed them to have way more armies than you ever could. I think the resource cost of troops should be reduced, especially if you want to span the entire map but still have forces around to protect your territory. I felt like I was only ever able to have 3 serious armies at a time and if you are campaigning with them there is no way to get around the map quickly to stop an invader. Also the diplomacy was wildy skewed for most of the time I played. Often there was nothing I could offer to get an alliance with people, even if we were already on good terms, maybe a glitch in my campaign?

  • @Gyrosmeister

    The campaign map and the battle terrains look awesome. Almost feels like home :P I am not a fan of these single entity stuff though, given that they under good conditions tank a fuckton of arrows. Those "end game" invasions are a good idea but I think they are limited by the source material.
    I may consider jumping to Troy and explore its modding capabilities, so there is a distinct possibility of a scenario overhaul if the modding boundaries allow it and I have the time to actually work on such a thing ;) And after all, there is a unknown non-playable faction there that has a special place in my heart, so I have one more reason to go and try modding that thing. Firstly, this is an excellent video. This will be watched by the CA devs mark my words. Your videos have a lot of impact (even if you don't know it.)
    Secondly, thank you for listening to my viewpoint of why they should expand to the full Bronze Age. I fully agree with the Dorians, the Atticans, I wish Egypt or at least Assyria would make a mention. When you see the Bronze Age mod for CKIII and Imperator and it's map, you know that's no excuse NOT to expand the map. When I mentioned this I was told: Oh no its a saga title, why would we EVER want Egypt or Assyria, it's a game based on the Trojan period... (Like really let's just ignore the entire Bronze Age factions like Egypt which has influenced Western Civilisation on a Grand scale, or the Assyrians or Babylonians that built those massive cities. What I would give to see a city map of Nivenh in this game. CA could literally make an entire Bronze Age total war game with this title. Seriously!)
    Thanks for putting the argument in a new constructive manner for us Bronze age bois, the Bronze Age is so neglected, as a mythological total war game - Look Troy hasn't flopped, its because perhaps epic (putting it on both steam and epic would have been better) but Troy has a lot of good things. I don't want it to become another Thrones of Britannia simply considering the fact that the map for Troy is so rich with mythological lore and detail it is practically the launchpad, the next step begging to expand into the Bronze Age. When I see an event from Egypt like the Pharoahs, it makes me annoyed, frustrated and a little tedious at times to wonder why the heck the Egyptians haven't been added. Or the Hittites.
    This game can be expanded and improved. Which is why when the steam release comes out, I hope it brings new life, new mods, and new factions as well.
    I don't want this game to be another Imperator Rome, Thrones of Britannia flop. I want this game to succeed. And CA should take your recommendations for mythology, and expanding the map. They can pull of a No Man Sky approach very successfully. CA Sofia deserve the credit for doing a wonderful job on Troy and the soundtrack is great. But I think they should watch your video and at least consider most of the suggestions you've made. I'm just one dude on the internet with his own imho lol.

    • @happycompy
      @happycompy  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the reply Medjay! Well said all around. While I would also love a huge map expansion, I tried to keep my critiques and suggestions within the scope of the setting CA chose. Even relatively low-effort faction and unit expansions could go a long way in this game, simply because the map is so detailed and physically large. I hate to say it but I'm pretty pessimistic about creative assembly's plans for long term Troy support. I really hope I am wrong because Troy has great fundamentals imo. I also hope that we get a full-fledged Bronze Age title, or a full-fledged mythology title soon.

    • @MedjayofFaiyum
      @MedjayofFaiyum 3 года назад +1

      @@happycompy Np, True, either way the game is set in the Trojan era, and any expansions would have to relate that. I think the decision to solely focus on the Trojan era as a saga titles makes perfect sense. But when I read the interview of what CA Sofia was thinking - this argument between mythology and historical must have been exactly what we're talking about in the comment section right now. There could have been (and I'm hypothesing here) some devs that wanted to go the full mythology (Because this would then become a sort of spiritual successor to AOE and AOE mythology as you so succinctly pointed out) but then there were other devs that wanted the historical approach. So a compromise must have been reached. The truth behind the myth approach just didn't work (despite its noble and well meaning intentions) simply because the fanbase in Troy's time (especially the historical community weren't happy that CA were giving full attention to fantasy and didn't like 3k's hybrid mix of fantasy and historical) and so when they saw this, they said, meh, to heck with hybrids, hybrids aren't my total war! You know exactly what I'm talking about here (never mind the other ridiculous conversations of the Epic Games store, and such) and Troy's approach didn't go so well. I like the game, but when I see it, I'm not as interested in the Trojan era as I would be doing a Battle of Kadesh scenario.
      You are not wrong to be pessimistic about the plans for long term support for Troy as of now. A steam release will be enough to gauge whether players want to do it and I don't want it to become exactly how Imperator Rome's game was abandoned. 11 or 15 people worked to save Imperator Rome but after every patch, there was a certain base going wah wah wah game bad. Troy doesn't have this but what it has this: The team at CA are still adding new content to Troy, but Troy is being ignored because while lots of players use Epic (yes we're all hypocrites) for free games, they don't exactly go for total war (On a plus side, most of the money that Epic gave to CA is funding their future projects, so you can see sometimes a bad investment can become beneficial). Moving back to the Imperator Rome point, Paradox saw this, and they said well heck. There's no point in working on a game that's not even gaining much money nor the players count that isn't reason for us to support this game. I can see CA doing this as well and it's a shame. When games come from an ancient era, they're hyped beyond belief, then the flop due to an innumerable amount of reasons, then after that, they are improved but the players never return. Then when companies like Paradox/CA leave it, players want more of it.
      I mean do you see the absolute mind stuff that is going on here? (And I'm not minicing my words here. Part of the reason ancient games aren't doing great apart from Ubisoft even bothering to make third world open action games like AC going to Ancient eras, is because the playerbase gets hyped, devs don't do half the work they're supposed to half the time thanks to investment pressures and rescheluding, and after that, all the bug-testing, but the player base gets too hyped which is affecting a lot games now, and then after that, the game gets abandoned...this what I don't like.) Now Paradox released 2.0 and everyone thought yeah the game's getting good. Then they abandoned it, and all the Paradox fans are going (justifiably) this is bad. Yes. But then that isn't an excuse to review bomb lots of Paradox games and Imperator. They're now review bombing EUIV. I say well you guys practically enabled Paradox to encourage its DLC policy for buying every aspect of the game, you wrote reviews saying yes its worth it. Now that these controversies are happening, now its oh no don't support Paradox anymore. Why am I saying this? Because the very same could happen to Troy easily. CA could add a couple of factions, new map expansions and steam workshop support for example. Then the game would be good, but then the player base wouldn't work so well and CA would want to move to a new project, and then the same exact situation will happen again. This is not good for us nor for CA.
      You yourself made the point that CA went back to Rome II (And thank God they used CA Sofia to do this) because people didn't like Attila's setting and Rome II was by far the most popular game (and look where it is today). I don't want ancient games being released in the future from ANY COMPANY that are launched in broken state, then they pull of a No Man Sky's approach to get where it is. If the future of releasing a game in classical anquitity is a broken launch with a horrendous backlash and then to reimprove the game again, then what's the point? Any video game devs that want to make a video game based on Rome, investors nah it's the cursed cycle. So that's WHY WE DON'T GET MORE ANCIENT GAMES WHEN THE SETTING IS SO DAMN GOOD. (Bear in mind my caps is also at a frustration but also frustrated at those fans that become hyped with an ancient setting game and then rage at the devs when the game doesn't come out as advertised, I know I'm part of that crowd too but now when a game release I'm getting less hyped because I can't trust game dev companies these days, I mean in general to properly bug-test their games, bug testing is AFTER the game has been launched and that sucks.)
      Which is why I don't want a Rome III. I don't want an Empire II. Because they'll be big bloated games and they'll flop and then they need new content - it's the same cycle. I want those games, but I'm afraid this is what you're going to get. I do hope CA Sofia at least understands this, and does more to improve and add more content into Troy because that game is practically begging for it.
      Sorry for my walls of text, but this is what I'm saying. I don't want this game's fate to be like Imperator. CA at least add map expansions relating to this period. Troy is great. Nothing wrong with it, apart from some minor improvements, but give us the DLCs we need to expand this game.
      And yes, I want the same as you Happy. Luckily we have a Bronze Age mod in Imperator and CKIII, but the Rome II Bronze Age mod will take some time.

      @@MedjayofFaiyum Great writeup, and apt comparisons to Imperator Rome's fate as well. I feel like Attila is the current Imperator Rome of TW games. Abandoned just when it was getting good (Age of Charlemagne). Let's hope that Troy doesn't become the new IR. I hope CA Sofia is allowed to continue to work on Troy for the next few years and shape it into a game worthy of the $50 price tag, but I have my doubts. CA doesn't usually stick with their games for very long. (Rome 2 and WH2 are the big exceptions, with 3K close behind). I personally love this game because of the setting, but the way it actually plays can be game-breaking in my opinion. Starting off is easy and similar to previous Total War games, but eventually you will start getting attacked by all your neighbors, especially if you are playing as Troy. The main issue is that you simply don't have the resources to deal with all these little armies attacking you from every side, since creating a large army will bring up your 'administrative cost'. This basically means that even though you should be able to field more units given your resources, every time you go up an administration level the amount of food and bronze you spend increases a great amount. You can go from making 2000 food and 80 Bronze next turn to -4000 and -400 just because you created one shitty unit. That is a really bad game design imo and I don't know why they put it in. Another problem is that the AI literally act like trolls in the campaign; they all declare war at you at once whenever a larger power attacks you, they constantly raid and raze your food and bronze settlements and then run away and sometimes they declare war on you one turn and then offer you peace if you give them resources. I don't know, maybe some people enjoy playing this way but I certainly don't, and I got absolutely sick of trying to manage the three armies I could afford, chasing a bunch of little retards across the map only to get attacked from the area I left behind 2 turns later. It's not fun and you don't even have the option to play how you want because literally everything you do after a certain point is just a reaction to the stupid AI. That being said, there is a really good mod out there called Radious mod which fixes all of these things. You no longer have to deal with all the stupid penalties to your economy thus allowing you to maintain more than three armies at once, and the AI becomes less trollish and actually attacks your settlements to conquer them instead of running around razing. I'm really glad I found this mod because I was ready to give up on the game; as cool as Bronze Age Aegean setting is, there is nothing that will convince me to play against that piece of shit AI ever again.

    So my condensed opinion on this is... it's pretty fun, but takes a while to get used to and overall is harder than the average Total War game. It's harder because you can't play the way you would typically play a TW game by conquest; rather, you need to follow the quest-line and politics are just as important as battles. Economy is more complex than other games due to the addition of various resources, but overall it's easy to understand. Battles are pretty straight forward mix of melee infantry, ranged infantry and cav with the addition of some varied units; some are buff and hard to kill, some are really fast and good against ranged units etc. There is also the addition of spells and buffs to your hero. (I'm going by the mythical mode, it's the only one I've played.) My overall advice on this would just be to figure out how to play your faction before you start or you may end up having a really hard time.

    I don't really have much to complain, it was for free, it's fun and runs smoothly. It had it's exploits, but every game has them. Kinda a middle ground between historical and warhammer, which means a realistic fights with some gods and mythology sprinkled in.

    Troy is a gem I can run it in high with my potato pc. Also the map is perfect for modding. You can have peloponnese war, macedonian wars with rome, a lot more including byzantine restoration from Komnenos to empire of nicea. If they expand a little more the map with dlc adding Syria and Egypt we could have Hittites and Egypt with a lot more of content and possibilities.

I play for the battles, but really only the good ones. I hate being forced to fight every two unit army the AI throws at me. Otherwise, yeah, it's a good game.

    Troy is a great little game fun game, at the right price. It certainly isn't a $50 game, at half that price I'd snap your hands off for it. Resources are great, creating it's own issues for your campaign! As you've said the campaign map is beautiful, the battle maps always feel slightly different, terrain creating tactical issues, then the mud, long grass, trees all giving bonuses or negative effects.
    The Epic Store deal clearly hindered the development of this game big time, I feel like if Troy was a Steam release from the start we'd have the version of today at the start.
    Troy 100% gets a lot of hate that really isn't deserved, I've seen people moan about the diplomacy for Achilles, how it's too difficult to be diplomatic with anyone while playing as him, which is literally the point! he was EXTREMELY difficult to deal with, hence why diplomacy sucks with him, unless he's in a good mood and you get that 50+ diplomacy buff!
    It certainly doesn't feel like other TW's, they are so predictable, no matter who you play as on most TW's you know you'll win 99% of battles, the AI will do stupid moves continously, where as Troy feels a lot better on this front, the AI will take advantage of diplomatic situations, if you have a war on 2 fronts, totally expect your ally of 30+ turns to attack you as they can smell blood, and they will do some damage before you can put up a fight to repel them!
    Troy does have it's issues though! Siege battles are horrific, by the time you've got into the enemies settlement you've lost half your army to OP towers (they feel like 3K towers)
    I feel like with Troy they've tried to stay in a neutral zone between Historical and fantasy, which hinders the game massively. Commit fully to one from the start and I feel like Troy would be so much better (My preference is the way they've NOW went, down the fantasy/myth path, and I am not a WH fan)
    Overall if you can pick up Troy on sale, do it, it's a great little game at the right price, it's certainly a hard TW to play at times, one of the first that I feel changing difficult actually makes a change .

    I doubt this game will get any more content after Warhammer 3 releases. If any content at all. It all comes down to the number of people playing it. So many may have got the game at release, but I do not believe there are enough players still around to make it worth the time and money needed to make any more content.
    I'd go so far as to say that like Thrones the game was dead on arrival and any DLC content made for it since then were probably already in the works, since they were following the Warhammer 2 method of low effort DLC character packs, adding mostly surface level changes. Anything more substantial than that is just a pipe dream I think

    As far as performance this game is great and have no complaints there. I see where CA is going with these very specific saga games (troy, Britannia etc) and I think the trojan war is a great historical period but I believe CA missed a huge opportunity to not expand the contents of this game to include the rest of the bronze age world, including Mesopotamia, Egypt and maybe a few other regions that would have brought more cultures and fighting styles into the game. This is what has me always returning to Rome 2 and rome 1 due to the fact that other total games are not able to able to mimic that diversity and grand scale of conquering and changing history. Maybe this will change with the new series CA has announced but all and all very interesting

    Good review, but I'm not sure I agree with your comments on "mythical" units. After all, the game is supposed to model the era of the Trojan War. But the monsters of mythology weren't signing up to fight with the armies of that era, even in mythology. In fact, some monsters were singular: there was only one Medusa in all of Greek mythology, they weren't a race. Drafting her would have been rather problematic, as the allied armies would have been turned to stone as well as the enemy armies. And, there was only one minotaur. Again, this was a dungeon dwelling beast, not a race of creatures from which you can draft units. I suppose you could add these things in, but then it wouldn't resemble even the Greece of ancient myth, but something completely new. That's fine if you want a Warhammer version of ancient Europe, but not so good if you wanted to replay the Trojan War.
