Antiquity does feel foreign in many ways, but to me, it also feels more akin to our modern world. The importance of republics, politics, philosophy and culture over just religion, institutions over individuals, wars for profit instead of religion, etc. I think it’s that balance of familiarity in an unfamiliar world that makes me love the ancient setting. And also the legions and hoplites look really cool.

    • @happycompy
      @happycompy  3 года назад +11

Wow that was really well said. You know, I never thought of it like that...the similarities to our modern world. Like you alluded to, maybe that's what makes it so relatable? It's fantastical yet familiar in some ways as well.

    • @00MSG

But you also have to think that most republics or democracies back then have almost nothing in common with our modern form of it. The population of Athens for instance was made up vastly of slaves and only a small part were actually considered citizens. Also in the middle ages most wars were fought for lets say pragmatic reasons + a religious background.

    • @Joleyn-Joy

I grew up with rome1, Rome2 had to wait until I was able to open up to, but once I got it, years after launch, patched, fixed… damn, it’s a work of art. I can say playing as any faction gets you so attached to it to a level not even rome1 did. Yeah, it’s way more accessible and one lost army can be replenished pretty fast, money is pouring way easier etc. But There’s a feeling of passion coming from this game. A love that allowed the devs fixing it to make it arguably one of the most successful late success stories. I tip my hat to them.

As of now, 1878 hours I've sunk into this game on Steam.
It has kept me coming back since it's release and still does. Endless replayability with the diversity of factions and units, often quite difficult strategy and economic management keeps it challenging and the setting is the most interesting of any Total War game.
The mods then elevate the game to legendary status.

The AI is very predictable, yes, but the troop models are super cool, and the idea behind on the campaign, playing a focused region like Italy or Greece makes me more sense. I like to see dozens of known settlements all over the greek world rather than being compacted into 1 single region of the province in the grand campaign, and ignoring tens of battles that would be needed to really conquer any place in the world. And I also like the huge impact on season effects behind sparta's DLC. Of course you will get no wealth from farms on winter xDD

1:59 - Never been happy about the Carthage map in Rome II - I'm sure we wish that you could at least go to the Acropolis and have some parts of Carthage expanded.
3:27 - CA Sofia def gave Rome II the updates they needed - but the cutscenes were really lacking. To this day I am disappointed of the lack of cutscenes in Rome II for that matter.
3:54 - Let's not forget CA Sofia also introduced new artwork for the Desert Kingdoms, the Empire of the Third Century actually had a neat narrative for each faction - playing as the Sassanids you got your own unique campaign stories as such. They have to be commended on this.
I would also point out that there is no TED/battle map editor for Rome II, but apparently LOTR team for Attila is working on a modding tool which will go for older total wars like Rome II - however first before anything that happens, LOTR mod has to be completed first.

@@happycompy Thank you! I hope so too! I'll predict that there will be a Rome 3. Not now, but in a couple of years. CA knows full well that the Classical Setting is too tempting. It all depends on where they go because after Warhammer 3, the next announcement for the new fantasy franchise is going to be massive. I wouldn't be surprised if they said they're gonna do LOTR - the fantasy franchise will also take the franchise forward in a way as well - sorry if I'm going off in a tangent, but much relies on what new titles/sagas and fantasy titles will be announced for the next 5 years
CA Sofia pulled a No Man Sky's approach on Rome II - and quite frankly they are one of the best developers with Feral combined. And CA the major studio has to be commended - they still listen to their fans no matter what.

@@MedjayofFaiyum I’m not sure if CA will be able to do LotR, because iirc the rights for that are still with the Tolkien estate. EA had the rights at one point (games like the hack’n slash for the movies, Battle for Middle Earth, and such), but not anymore. Not sure if the estate will lend the rights to CA, especially given that Christopher Tolkien had voiced great displeasure at PJ putting a greater emphasis on action in the movies (which the game would most likely be based on) and skipping over things like the songs and poems (the more literary aspects); not that he has a lot of room to talk, given that he endorsed the video game War of the Ring (which is arguably even less accurate than the movies). Basically, a game about grand strategy and conquering your enemies while managing public order and your economy doesn’t seem like it would be up the Tolkien estate’s alley.

I mean look at the Rise of Mordor team they haven't got much from the estate, and tbh the Estate has made huge money out of the franchise even if they disagree with the way it's being marketed in games or books.

There is so many mods it's very confusing for someone like me picking up the game after years.
The most confusing part is how the keywords on the Workshop don't work properly, and lead to pages and pages of extremely specific, often unrelated submods.
Imo, it's lacking user friendly small packs of comforts mods. Not heavy on modifications, no 2000 new units ( which DEI actually offers I think? ) and a long list of potential conflicts, no strict rules of installation, and available through sub click directly, as other mods are too big for that, and require old school installation.
It's not a critic towards modders, I appreciate that you have apparently gave your opinion on the base game ( and its DLC ) for most of the video, and don't assume that everyone will run a heavely modded Rome 2, which is an experience that honestly, most new comers can't bother with for obvious reasons.
It's almost two different games. I had that problem with Empire : I never recommended it to new players, because my experience with the base game was shitty, until I've spent hours and hours looking for mods, modding it, fixing interaction issues etc.
That's not what I call a game one can recommend.

A lot of complaints about this game. I never suffered from any of the bugs that others have, and at the time - I had a pretty "low-end rig" (i5 4670, GTX 660), although I did encounter occasional crashing. Sega let me know that I needed to verify the integrity of the game cache. Something I knew nothing about, since I'm not only a dinosaur, but usually a console gamer. After that, I never had any issues. I run the game on a newer (and better) rig now, and hope that I can live at least another ten years to keep playing this game! I still love Rome 1 because its what got me started and I think is the best total war, but I also keep Rome 2 at the same level, I love the battles, how the game feels, the setting, the variety, the emotions i get playing this, i feel its like rome 1 but more modern. of course it lacks in some aspects, yes, but overall both rome tw games have been my favorite of all total war. None of the games after it have caputred me so much, and the newest games (at least for me personally) lack in the battle aspect. If you like them thats fine, just not my cup of tea, i want battles as in rome 2, just improved and bigger if possible. Great video

I think Total War: Persia would be great! India in the east and some unbending Greeks in the west. You can have Babylon and Egypt. You can either play the rise of the empire or travel around as rebels rise everywhere and kingdoms try to become independent. You could have homogenized armies or have it be put together by different troops, that you gather around your Empire. A bit like in Troy but cooler.
It would be a world the average player knows very little about, but we all heard of it.
    EDIT: grammar

I have played Rome II for approximately the amount of hours as you. I bought it back in 2014, when I was in the US. And to be honest, I barely played it back then, so I kinda missed the huge disappointment that it was back then. I guess the studio that made it what it is today and the game that I still really, really enjoy is the one based in my home country - Bulgaria. Btw, it's pronounced SOfia, not SofiA, it's the capital :D (they also made Troy, which I am still to try, got it for free from EG)
I guess I'll be commenting more on your videos from now on.
I hope we can play together one of these days.
    Cheers!

It's difficult to describe how disappointed I was with Rome 2 on its release, and yet now the game is at a stage where it's better than I would have expected before it's launch. Me and my college friend played this game. We played it for one year and put 800 hours into it. I'd come home from class and he'd already be in my dorm working on the campaign. We would go to parties to try and be social college dudes, but eventually we'd get bored and go play rome 2 together. So many hazy college nights subjugating lesser factions. Now I'm a boring workaholic with a wife and kid. I haven't seen that friend in 7 years. Idk where I was going with this but I'm really sad now.

Fair enough. You weren't the first person I've heard have that exact same complaint. I do think that the game lacks character in its UI, sound and visual design, and maybe that's what fails to capture some people in the first few hours of gameplay.

I will probably never go back to Attila TBH (and Attila still has serious performance issues too). I also love how you bring up Skyrim. For me, the 4 or 5 games that I always end up reinstalling tend to be Empire Total War, Rome II Total War, Star Wars Empire at War, and Skyrim.

Think It comes down to what you prefer, If you like more cinematic battles and historical accuracy you play Rome 2. But for a sandbox strategy game you play Rome 1 imo, simply because the battle engine is better and all armies can be independent without a general allowing more tactical freedom.

Rome remastered just made me want to play Rome 2 again, i don't regret buying it because I want to support CA making more of my favorite game series, but to be honest I barely played it for a couple days before I realized how much I missed little things like units replenishing automatically without having to March all the way back to a city with an advanced enough barracks, and after I hit Marian reforms and remembered how painful it was to watch your veteran triarii and principes die off, unable to be upgraded to modern units, I ended up just installing Rome 2 again for the 10th time.

I do not think the remastered version of Rome Total War will bring the end of Rome 2.
The hype will last for a few weeks/months maybe, then people will realise it's still Rome with a few fancy new textures, but with the same issues (I'm looking at you, pathfinding in cities :P) and limitations (small number of factions). Don't get me wrong, I love Rome Total War, it's the game that got me into the series back in 2007 (and omg the nostalgia whenever I hear the music), but I just cannot play it anymore, it's too outdated. Indeed some features were cool and are not present anymore in Rome 2, but overall I think the latter is better (I still puke tho when I zoom in and see the soldiers ice skating).
Btw, Age of Empires got me into history too. But I played the shit out of the first game, didn't play AOE2 (I know, I know, my fellow history/gaming nerds, I should be burned on a stake). Then Age of Mythology really made me love classical antiquity and the final step was Rome Total War.
