Gotrek and Felix need a complete rework, especially now that Legendary Heroes like Goritch or Kroak have been implemented as great assets for their factions. Same with the outdated bretonnian Green Knight.
Yea, and they could give you like story telling and choiches. If you played King Arthur - The Role-playing Wargame you know what I mean. Text adventures with images and a narrator. So have the narrator telling you with a visual images to follow in style of the game and allow you to make decisions. It could tie into novels and other Warhammer fiction. I've only just got into the total war universe and I was thinking how amazing it would be to do Greek mythology and here we are!! and on sale for the whole game with DLC!? YES PLEASE! thanks for the video!
Honestly at the current asking price and with TWW 3 around the corner it's a very hard sell. Like you said, what they're doing now with Mythos should have been how the game had released from the start. If they had gone all in on the "Age of Mythology" Total War meme i think people would have easily forgiven both the Epic exclusive and the reused assets (which i don't really mind but some people are weird i guess) as it's been a very popular ask for a Total War setting for over a decade now. I'll never understand why they went for this "history behind the myth" approach because most of the units looked silly and they didn't even stick with it all the way since at the same time you had healing abilities and heroes that were tanking whole armies like they were Karl Franz. They had tons of units from TWW that fit Greek mythology perfectly and i think it was a huge missed opportunity which they're still not capitalizing on now properly with Mythos where most of the new mythological units are just recolored human units. Where are the Nemean Lions, Satyrs, Stymphalian Birds, Sphinxes, Medusas, Furies, Pegasus and Chimeras? Oh well, thanks for the great video but i'll just wait and grab it at 75% in 6-12 months :) Out of curiosity, what did you mean with the Thrones of Britannia comment at the end? ToB has only gotten 1 patch, in 2018 and 1 batch of hotfixes in 2019. It was never touched again and it still has a ton of issues, mostly design-wise that CA never addressed. It could have been a very good entry to the series if they had stuck with it and listened to feedback, i still think it had some of the best siege maps to date and the recruitment system was great as well.
I was keen to try historical, even if it was the same game with mythological units turned off and general bodyguards. My issue was the bodyguards were implemented so poorly. Firstly, the combat just sucks: generals will die frequently at any point. This wasn't an issue in Rome 2 and Shogun 2 so somehow this implementation was screwed up. Second, the generals don't feel distinct, making their concept and their skill tree largely irrelevant. Stronger fighters should have stronger bodyguard units. Without that, there's no reason not to exclusively recruit warlords.
I don't know why this game is not rated better. Started yesterday and i really think it is great TW game. UI and heroes fighting each other on battlefield is amazing . Game is smooth like no TW game . Setting is great ,trading mechanic simple but effective , really add to game. It is easy strong 8 without mythos and i am not generous with number .
With Zeus we are expecting a storm and some massive lightning bolt and thunder, in reality it is just Zeus going "annnnd fuck that one guy in particular"
THEY SHOULD ADD A DEMI-GOD DLC!, imagine doing quests to win the favor of a demi-god like Hercules and having him fight in your army. Plus they should so do a god of war collaboration with Kratos.
I like the historical total wars, sure but i liked both Warhammer games and i always wished more games like total war but with fantasy. If with licence like Lord of the Ring or fantasy from our history. So i am happy to have this expansion. Three kingdoms with china mythology... that would have been great because i really like the japanese/ chinese Mythology. Hope we will see more of them...
Great video, really informed me about the DLC, got it on epic so wont be rebuying it on steam, which is a shame. But watching the combat footage in the game optimization section of the video, a lot of the units seem to be just kinda standing next to the things they are attacking, particularly the lion dudes. Maybe the game runs so smoothly because none of the units are doing anything ;)
This is really what they should have done with the concept of 'sagas' from the beginning You've got Warhammer - which is pretty much their Star IP these days You've got historical - formerly their flagship but now badly stumbling as they try to figure out what to do with it Saga's should be based on myths - stories - legends - i.e. SAGAS - it's in the friggin name :P XD give you a chance to play out myths and legends from ancient history - making them copies of the historical setting gives them no individuality and isn't going to make most non-historical fans tune in Much as the historical fans may not want to hear it - the warhammer fans now make up the bulk of CA's fanbase and will have to be catered to going forwards I mean, jesus, just off the top of my head there's ancient Egypt - ancient Norse (how awesome would it be to lead Thor and his people into battle???) - Mesopotamia - hell! What about the Aztecs??? They've got a crapload of really bloody myths and legends to build off of :P
I think original recipe, historical setting and "strong single" heroes was the, was the right one. Mythos makes no sense to me. I think the game was designed to be historical. After the dope release on Epic, they just slammed Warhammer stuff on, with no criteria. It occupy the same niche as Tw Warhammer, being worst. We just needed a better tweaked historical setting and better multiplayer. Total War are just abbandoning historical setting
Yeah disagree, I prefer historical modes more than the mythological modes. 3 Kingdoms did a good job, I'm not liking creative milking customers for content that should've been included from the beginning. CA has been farming its client base for decade now, I used to buy anything labeled Total War from day one, now I wait for steam sales.
@@italianspartacus I get you, and enjoyed the review. realistically they're cannibalizing heavily from 3 Kingdoms and War Hammer. They could've delivered both at game launch at a fair price. Oh and I almost forgot they were floated cash advsnce doing the CCP exclusive. They don't have any excuses.
i know i’m very late to the video but i think it’s a great idea to be able to choose between. myself like im sure many others, was drawn to the total war franchise for the historical battles and large campaigns. so to see the focus so hard on the warhammer games and pretty much leave the historical titles in the dust is abit sad honestly. hope we get a medieval 3 someday
I'm disappointed history mode feels tacked on. Three Kingdoms the historical mode felt tacked on as well. I'm worried that CA doesn't know how to make an actual historical title anymore. History IS exciting. Total War used to be able to capture the excitement of actual history. Maybe it's a matter of adding more interesting mechanics like expanding the equipment for troops and customizability, making logistics more interesting and impactful, or expanding the impact of the strategic map on battle gameplay. There's a lot of room for improvement - they could expand the garrison stance and allow armies to create forward operating bases on the strategic map. They could let armies construct roads, fortifications, and other engineering projects, as was done to a great extent by many armies throughout history. A scouting system could be added that allows for cavalry detachments, reporting back recon and raiding enemy logistics. There's a lot of interesting aspects to military operations that they still haven't really touched on.
I would love to see a system where armies have to maintain its own logistics with foragers, so when you entered an area you get X amount of food for X amount of time. Meanwhile an enemy army can attack and instead attack the foragers instead of the main body to interrupt the foraging. The battle would be like 200 v 200 or something. More small scale war related attacks be great.
Exactly my thoughts. Plus now, if we speak for example about Medieval, CA could absolutely create a satisfying feudal and papal system. Plus all the things you said could be a good start to dig in. But what I think, it's that like every game in the industry, apart from a smal minority, difficulty is dumbed down. Case in point : CK3. No challenge at all, no surprise. So CA makes easy game, with easy mecanics. Because it's simple to make and rewards the amount of money in the end. I 99% sure they wont ever tackle on some ideas of yours. Or others more civilian based. Easier to design big dragons and let you think it's new and interesting. In the end, the rock paper and scissor system is still there. They make you thing Brittania in Warhammer is really unique. Yet its just a limit on how many peasants troops I can field. Its just unique events because "fantasy is unique". Well the same could be made in historical title. Different events between france and england. Different orientation. England and its longbow, France and its chivalry that caused many disasters like Crecy. They cant make historical titles anymore, you're right. Dragons and shit are fun, still I want to lead real nations and feel the wind of history play on on the battlefield. No fantasy game could replace that. And surely not 3 fantasy games in a row. We didn't get anything worth since Attila. 6 years ago. Please, some studio take on the lead and challenge CA on this. It isn't that hard.
Like you said, they should have gone with this mythological approach from the beginning. Its too small in scope and too monocultural to be very interesting long term for a pure historical game. These historical games need more varied factions in order to have longevity in my opinion, either that or great modability so people can creat Lotr-mods etc, Medieval 2 was great because it had both. It is a ok game, and adding the mythological features made it better. Its just a shame that with a bit bigger scope and mythological approach from the start it could have been a lot greater. If the campaign map was more zoomed out and included more varied cultures, each with their own mythology and thus with diffrent mythological creatures, magic, heroes. Basically something Age of Mythology'ish in total war, with a norse faction with ice giants fighting the greek hydras, Ragnar Lodbrok fighting Achilles and just crazy (and unhistorical) fantasy stuff like that is what i would have wanted. For these smaller-scale historical saga games they should focus on areas that has much more faction/culture diversity. Or more ideally: use the resources to work on the large scale historical titles like Medieval 3.
CA really, really needs to step it up with the historical modes or the next historical game needs to be a fully fledged historical game. I love warhammer, but I loved the historical games first. It feels like CA is abandoning the historical fans. Not to mention this all still feels really overpriced.
There needs to not be any more historical modes and just make a pure historical game. Just like there shouldn't be a fantasy mode in a historical game.. That's my opinion on it all
That would probably be for the best, though the idea of having both appeals to me, they’ve shown they haven’t been very good executing it with both 3k and now Troy it seems.
I come from Warhammer 1 and 2 like had 1 pre order loaded and played on day one and loved it even if 1 was jank, 2 fixed the main issues with one. Granted not all of the issues. I was sorta bored by 3 kingdoms and always wondered if Troy was worth it. Sad it needs a dlc to basically be a newer take on warhammer 2 when I wait for 3 to come around.
From the looks of it they sorta get they have 2 kinds of fans to try and get to enjoy their games. Ones who like the warhammer games and ones who like something closer to shogun 2.
Great review Spartacus!! I also believe that if they started with true mythos elements from launch the game would be far greater now. The approach to satisfy all fans never works. As you said historical is a complete waste of their time as Troy from Omere is a fantastical story by itself.
yup, if you're going to do mythology then go all the way or not at all. I can't describe the disappointment I felt when I found out the centaurs I betrayed my closest ally to get were just slightly suped up mounted units.
I honestly had no idea this game existed. And being stuck on shogun 2 for so long, never being interested in Warhammer cause of the theme, I might pick this up to test there latest engine.
Hmm, if this was a history game with highly polished battles and mechanics, I might be more interested in it. However, I have TW: WH2, and it more than sates my appetite for fantasy, monsters and hero centric battles.
The thing I've been having issues with so far in my campaigns is the AI can just straight up break a non aggression pact and declare war on me and nobody bats an eye, but if I did that everyone on the map would come to my doorstep :/
Exclusivity for epic was a bad choice ... bougth it this week for a good price and playing the hell out of it historical for now and afterwards I try the other modes (didnt touch it on epic) and there are already a lot mods on steam... love it
It was a smart choice. Epic gave CA a ton of $$ to cover Troy and Troy was redeeming millions of times on the first day. That's a huge audience increase
@@richardshiflett5181 not smart ... they would have made the same money by normally selling without exclusivity to epic and without all that bad reviews of angry gamers ...
"To make this a true bronze age we're missing most of Anatolia and all of Egypt." Well, we're getting part of what's missing now. Here's hoping they're warhammering the bronze age total war games.
I've played for nearly 30 hours, bought the Amazons DLC, seems pointless, the aim seems to be to work towards saving Troy from their inevitable invasion, but then I thought what have the Trojans ever done for us. Unlike the Monty Pythons on the Romans the answer was nothing, only got to fight one battle. So back to Attila and Ancient Empires2 to fight some battles. CA need to remember the thing that sets it aside from the Paradox lessons in logistics games are BATTLES BATTLES BATTLES !! get back to what made them great. The modders know what we like.
awesome thx for the review. it would be awesome to have a video that explains the differences between warhammer and troy. while i think warhammer is so sweet, i dont get into it that much because it is TOO much war for me. constant fighting i dont enjoy that much. i'm still waiting / looking for a total war that has as much or maybe even more building/economy/diplomacy focus. is troy a bit slower / economy based than warhammer?
i'm also of the opinion that mythos should of been the default to launch the game with, i will probably not get this dlc at all and jump in to some historical. but all in all i can't seam to play more then 1-2 troy campaigns, there is not longevity in this game at all
Ok, disagree, I lover Total War games because of their History aspect, I am now playing TWST ONLY because they have implemented History mode, but I do agree I wish they would have done so from release! Nice Vids though thnak you
Well, sad to agree with you on the historical side. Troy should not have been an historical episode to begin with. CA do not know how to do historical games anymore. You say it needs to stop, then sadly I'll stop here too. Lightnings, dragons and shit are fun. But for me it won't beat, on the long run, the feelings I had and still have on Medieval 2, Attila Shogun or empire : to lead real soldiers, real nations and write history. I mean with todays script and knowledge of CA, Medieval could have a real Papacy and feudal system, blood line management etc. Just imagine Crusader kings like system, not overly complexe (I mean, CK3 is pretty simple to be honest), added to the real battle system of Total War and its graphics. Just look how modders have enriched M2 with Stainless Steel and its submod SSHIP. But no... Games are overly and overly simplified, again and again. To be point its not even fun because there is no challenge. Case in point : CK3. You have to lose on purpose to have a challenge. May another studio take back the torch and make it shine again. I'm still amazed no one ever really contested CA on this.
What frustrates me is that they only dipped their toe into the mythological mode considering how much they've directly ported over from Warhammer. If they're going to port over griffons, the hydra, centigors, harpies, minotaurs, and skinwolves- why not also port over the bloodrack medusa? The gorgon agent is in the truth behind the myth mode, but CA is going to charge $20 for a handful of mostly ported over assets? They really could have made mythos mode special if they wanted to, using the medusa as an example again- they could have had the medusa literally turn enemy units into stone like they did for Spartan: Total Warrior! For $20, why not make the myrmidons actual ant people with unique animations? My hope is that if I buy into this that CA will continue to add content to Troy, but it kind of seems like a gamble. (CA please release Spartan: Total Warrior on Steam btw)
The medusa (or rather, the gorgon) is on the new mythological mode, but it looks much more like it is said to look like on the mythos: it resembles a fury, or a demon with bat wings and stuff.

Oh well, thanks for the great video but i'll just wait and grab it at 75% in 6-12 months :)
Out of curiosity, what did you mean with the Thrones of Britannia comment at the end? ToB has only gotten 1 patch, in 2018 and 1 batch of hotfixes in 2019. It was never touched again and it still has a ton of issues, mostly design-wise that CA never addressed. It could have been a very good entry to the series if they had stuck with it and listened to feedback, i still think it had some of the best siege maps to date and the recruitment system was great as well.
16:12 poor hydra just sitting there missing out on the action
Great video!
Thanks for the vids, they are very inciteful
Thank you for watching my dude!
I agree with the historical mode, like either focus on one element like historical or go full mytho.
Keep it simple, keep it safe.
great point!
still have that collision problem but t begins looking good for the game
I don't know why this game is not rated better. Started yesterday and i really think it is great TW game. UI and heroes fighting each other on battlefield is amazing . Game is smooth like no TW game . Setting is great ,trading mechanic simple but effective , really add to game. It is easy strong 8 without mythos and i am not generous with number .
I absolutely love it
I forgot all about this on Epic. I'm intrigued again and its out on steam in about 2 hours. I feel lucky.
I had barely heard a word or two of this game, I just noticed yesterday that this was out. But then I only use Steam anyway. Instant buy.
Love the video, thank you sir
57$ is a bit to much, Will wait for a sale. Good review!
With Zeus we are expecting a storm and some massive lightning bolt and thunder, in reality it is just Zeus going "annnnd fuck that one guy in particular"
Brilliant presentation.
Great review IS! Completely agree with your takeaways. It's what the game should have been from launch.
Thank you my dude!
This is really what they should have done with the concept of 'sagas' from the beginning
You've got Warhammer - which is pretty much their Star IP these days
You've got historical - formerly their flagship but now badly stumbling as they try to figure out what to do with it
Saga's should be based on myths - stories - legends - i.e. SAGAS - it's in the friggin name :P XD give you a chance to play out myths and legends from ancient history - making them copies of the historical setting gives them no individuality and isn't going to make most non-historical fans tune in
Much as the historical fans may not want to hear it - the warhammer fans now make up the bulk of CA's fanbase and will have to be catered to going forwards
I mean, jesus, just off the top of my head there's ancient Egypt - ancient Norse (how awesome would it be to lead Thor and his people into battle???) - Mesopotamia - hell! What about the Aztecs??? They've got a crapload of really bloody myths and legends to build off of :P
Funny thing is, both historical and "truth behind the myth" feel more like the mythology, IE the Illiad, than the "mythos" dlc.
I'm actually more excited for historical mode, especially considering I don't have to spend any money for it.
Likewise - it's what I was hoping the original release would have.
The EGS deal made CA bank
Which total war game is the best right now? I haven't played any in years
Cool review thnx
Yeah disagree, I prefer historical modes more than the mythological modes. 3 Kingdoms did a good job, I'm not liking creative milking customers for content that should've been included from the beginning. CA has been farming its client base for decade now, I used to buy anything labeled Total War from day one, now I wait for steam sales.
I'm saying I'd prefer one or the other not a watered down or late delivered experience of both :)
It isn't that hard.
great review thank you
Like you said, they should have gone with this mythological approach from the beginning.
Spot on!
Historical don't sell. Ever since R2TW the historical fans have shit on every historical game
The animations are way better in Warhammer imo.
Yeah, the Divine Will is kinda just recoloured aura except from Zeus and Poseidon's Mini Wave.
Totally agree brother!!
yup, if you're going to do mythology then go all the way or not at all. I can't describe the disappointment I felt when I found out the centaurs I betrayed my closest ally to get were just slightly suped up mounted units.
Hey, thanks for the video Spartacus. I said to myself last year that I will get the game 1 year after release if it is good.
not a problem brother!
Good job on the video Sparty. I just want a new historical total war game and that part of the game looks like a bit of a let down for me.
It just doesn't offer enough for historical fans I'm afraid
@@italianspartacus you and H for Havoc have saved me time and money and I thank you for that.
Improve the game, call it DLC.
Will this be available on your nexus store?
Yup! Tomorrow :)
Am Sure the buget for this game got + as its a total war game and its TROY! as i just paid for the game so am sure sales are still happening
Should I even bother buying it all on steam if I’ve already got all of it on epic games?
Absolutely not. Just get Mythos :)
@@italianspartacus Sounds good! Thanks for the content, keep being an awesome RUclipsr!
Mythic agents, are they in? Gorgon/Medusa?
Yes!! Brand new ones :) check our my game. Mode guides to see the gorgon
@@italianspartacus but they can't be used in battles though :(
Just bought the bundle for 51$. Not bad
nice video, once again
Thank you brother!
Is a one-year-old game, I can't bring myself to buying it for that price.
"To make this a true bronze age we're missing most of Anatolia and all of Egypt." Well, we're getting part of what's missing now. Here's hoping they're warhammering the bronze age total war games.
Will the Mythological Creatures in Truth Behind The Myth mode get the character update without having the Mythos DLC?
Yes!
@@italianspartacus Thanks for replying!
If you already have Total War Warhammer 2, then it's not worth buying Troy until it's on a massive discount.
Yes absolutely, a lot more economy based becsuse of the inclusion of multiple resources to trade!
You may wanna check out total war three kingdoms it has my favorite diplomacy in the series
I thought we were gonna get Final Fantasy 15 styled god summons. I am very disappointed.
Say what you will about the Epic Game Store, but I got Total War Troy for free, so I’m pretty okay playing it on there.
Starting this month, I am saving for new PC, so will pass for now. Maybe will get it during December sales, when I should have my new rig
Helen needs more focus and mechanics for getting her
Thank you
You're welcome!!
i am on steam , ready to go. thats why i am here to see if i shuld get it or not.
Use the link in the description to support the channel ;) but if you've never played it, dude it's a blast
i'm also of the opinion that mythos should of been the default to launch the game with, i will probably not get this dlc at all and jump in to some historical. but all in all i can't seam to play more then 1-2 troy campaigns, there is not longevity in this game at all
I don't understand, how it is a problem to re-use animations? If it works, good, use it. Warhammer fans are childish.
I love you bro thank you
Ok, disagree, I lover Total War games because of their History aspect, I am now playing TWST ONLY because they have implemented History mode, but I do agree I wish they would have done so from release!
Nice Vids though thnak you
CA does not make historical games anymore, and that's a damn shame...
so troy basicly is warhammer greece ??
No. Allies matter in Troy. You'll lose if you don't make many allies
@@richardshiflett5181 no what i mean warhammer is they have mythology creature ingame
I don't recall the Hydra and Minotaur appearing in the Iliad.
@@TheSeventySin7 To my understanding the agents still can't enter the battlefield on mythos mode
@@blakebailey22 Yeah, they should still work like they do on the "Truth Behind the Myth" mode.
Unpopular opinion. I prefer the truth behind the myth version over the other 2
