A group of people coming from north of Greece migrated down and brought about the end of Mycenaean rule of Greece (we think), and the Spartans that most people know settled in Lakonia as part of the migration. The ones here are more of the Lakonian inhabitants at the time.

Odysseus is by far the hardest campaign in the game. I recommend if you’re new to try out menaleus or Achilles since they are both strong and can steamroll quickly
@@merrylildeath3113 Yeah I picked him first because he was my fav Hero but DAMN it can be a difficult first campaign. Honestly, I think this will be a great one to start with. The premise is simple, the factions straightforward; I started with the Warhammer games and they can be extremely confusing due to all of the complexities of the differing factions. Sparta vs. Troy is easy to get your head around and should let you focus more on learning the systems and enjoying the strategy/combat. Plus, if all else fails, we have ItalianSpartacus to light the way 😉
I have over 500 to 700 hours in Rome two total war and it is honestly one of the best bang for buck games and is very very good I would say the best title that CA has come out with maybe not an by release but after its tweaks since now it definitely is the best. Just wanted to add my thanks and appreciation for all your time and effort with respect to your very well made and informative Troy videos! I was fortunate enough to get a free copy of Total War:Troy from the Epic Games promotion last year, tried to play a campaign and was overwhelmed, so it has been collecting dust on my HD until recently. With all the hype around the soon to be released Mythos DLC, I decided to revisit Troy and again felt lost until I came across your "Troy Beginners Guides". They are awesome and really opened my eyes to all the very cool features found in this game and how to choose and play a campaign. So many thanks again! BTW: Did you create any "which campaign to play" video for the Amazon faction?
Barry!!! thank you so much for your kind words brother :) Glad I could help. Funny you ask - I'll be doing "Which Campaign to Play: Amazons" AND "Ajax & Diomedes: Is it Right For You?" Videos a lkittle later this month. The DLC launches September 2nd, so I'll probably have them out on the weekend prior so people can decide come launch time :)
@@italianspartacus Wow! Awesome to hear back from you so quickly! Great to hear that you will be creating more Troy videos as noted above. Looking forward to them! Keep up the great work, sir! :) Now off to play my first Troy campaign using all your great tips and advice.
@@jacksonholmes9955 haha I started with Achilles on Veteran and it's been a challenge for sure. The key is to grab a couple settlements early while defending your original settlements. From there you can build out much easier. Take advantage of how strong Achilles is in battle in the early game
@@LateRoundLegendsI'm confused how to win the game. Am I supposed to conquer the map? Whenever I make soldiers to invade a city, I use up all of my food. I think I should have started the game by expanding my empire so that I have enough resources for a large army, because all of my enemies are too strong for me.
@@jacksonholmes9955 did you watch this tutorial video? He explains the victory conditions. But for a Total War victory which is the classic type of victory you will expand (under control, not spreading yourself so thin you can't defend your land) and create an empire. There's different victory objectives each faction will have to meet that you can find in game or in this video
Great video and well thought out and explained. I always get kinda confused with TW games, especially at the start, this will help a lot, thanks, subbed.
This is very helpful. You should look into narrating games, your voice is soothing and your explanations motivate me to start playing. Kudos to you man!
well, that is some real detailed and well explained guide! i knew most from many other TW titles bot it got me some info about troy in special too. Thx mate and i gladly give you my subscription :D
As a lover of "Total War: Attila," I had a heck of a time trying to figure out how to set War Coordination with my Vassals and Military Allies. There wasn't much help about that in the game. That might be something to do a video about in future.
I actually cover this in my Trojan Guide as I realized I didn't cover it in this. Let me grab the video with the time stamp: ruclips.net/video/9Kve7qecST8/видео.html
I never liked the ally mechaninc in total war troy it doesent happen in the same turn while u can jusr train up a army in 3 turns or so and disband after
Just played a couple hours of it, first time playing a total war game, I regret I didn't get in the series earlier now :/ Well anyways, better late than never!
You got in late but now all the previous games are pretty regularly on sale and your first try was free lol id say its a decent way to start since it just means you have a bunch to look forward to.
Warhammer! I love history and TW has that in spades. So you can’t go wrong grabbing Rome/Medieval/Shogun etc. However, the Warhammer series works so well with the TW system that I personally recommend to everyone. Enough so, that I’m disappointed in Troy for not doing full mythology... as that is truly a part of history more so then “in truth of the developers eyes”.
Spartacus: “Most new people will probably play Achilles because Achilles”. Me picking Sarpedon because he has a cool hat 😐 Edit: Didn’t even realize he had a Sarpedon series
Me too mate! I'm nearly 29 now and remember playing the original when I was young. I've played every total war except thrones and the mobile game one. My favourite series.

First couple of Hours of play: I remembered how intrincate was the settlement management before the WH tone down. I am scratching my head in that department atm.
Im so overwhelmed, i have started over twice now, and im still so confused i dont even know how to get siege equipment in the sieges lol, I’ll get used to everything with time but damn its hard
oh no! so you only need sieges when you're fighting against locations with a wall. when you go to attack, there should be a menu, in the center, that allows you to build the siege equipment. it'll tell you how many turns it will take, as denoted by a little number next to the siege equipment as you "queue" it. does that help??
@@italianspartacus Are you also going to make a tutorial video how you would play the game from the start ? so for example the first half hour of a campaign with Achilles ?
I just downloaded this game. I have never played any Total war game. and I know I'm gonna suck before I get better but this video helped me a lot in understanding wtf is going on. hehe
FYI you misspoke at 11:45 because Winded is not worse than Tired. Armies that are attacked in March stance will have Tired troops, which greatly reduced their stats in combat, but armies attacked in raiding stance will be Winded, which stilled reduces their combat stats, but not by as much as Tired.
I was bold and I skipped it tutorial thinking I could do it man I was lost immediately I should have watched the tutorial but this is good this is probably better than the tutorial cuz you go over a lot of things that probably isn't even on there so I like this video I appreciate it the game recently just came out on steam and it's really fun and my first hero choice was Achilles
Wanted to get back into Total War, as I haven’t played since Medieval II. Was eyeballing Rome II or Shogun 2 since I want a historical...but hey free Troy AND it seems pretty damn good too. I win!
Exellent video as always! I lurked around your vids for a while now and I really like the clear presentation and info you give on Total War. Subscribed! As for Troy, I can't decide on my first faction yet. I will go Greek (I always favored the Greek in the Trojan War), but can't decide on the hero yet. Maybe I should just wait for the Amazons and go with Hippolyta :P
i honestly dont know why they didnt make King Leonidas the king of Sparta...... but hey still loving the game and loved the tutorial for a 1st time player of total war!! (subbed and keen to learn more)
Brother Italian Spartacus , I have bought the game just yesterday from Epic , and Wanted to get into detail in this Game , Because I am totally new to Total War . I need to learn the mechanics and basics on the game . It would be really helpful for all your viewers brother if you decide to stream a Troy campaign , I know you are super hooked up in CK3 , But if you can be so kind to please just stream once of any campaign in Troy , it would be really helpful . Thanks for the video brother .
OK, now that I have the game, and went through some of the tutorial, there's really a lack of info on just explaining a broader concept of the game. This tutorial is helpful with gameplay mechanics. Like I can click on the timestamp and go to the reference of that mechanic. But there's nothing explaining actually what the hell is going on. And what users are supposed to be trying to accomplish turn after turn. Agamemnon campaign is best because it has a tutorial button that can be activated. Going along with the tutorial, I'm able to learn and practice a few important gameplay concepts. But still overwhelmed, and have no sense of direction of what most of it is. Especially, what I actually want overall, and how to go about it from a broader perspective. As in not explaining each gameplay detail. But just a general understanding that keeps users wanting to do more. Rather than leaving them not knowing what to do.
Best way to learn is to just play a few campaigns by yourself. A few things you will need those are these: Early game try to expand and take out weak factions first. If you run into a faction with. A military alliance do not attack it unless you also have military allies since 9/10 you will lose the battle and likely lose the game. Tip #2: there are different stances next to your hero. You can use those stances to ambush, raid, march(speed) and 1-2 others. The stances are very good and I highly recommend that you use them. Tip #3: do not be afraid to go in the red for a little while. Most of the time it can be earned back by sacking, trade deals, and upgrading buildings. for any battle tips/ more in depth tip search up a diff guide. These are just for general good play and having more of a chance to win.
In the "broad" sense of what you want to accomplish by the "end" of the game, you should look at the objectives button on the upper part of the radar map down the right. Look at Homeric Victory as that is "easier" to achieve. That will tell you what you want to work towards to, it will tell you which settlements you need to own and which factions you need to eliminate or other things you need to do specific to each faction. Now, how you go about doing that or how long does it take; it's completely up to you. Also for the most part, you can follow the "missions" the game gives you and the advisor will guide you towards a specific region or way of playing. Of course do look at this guide and the ones on the factions to learn how they play and which one you may like more
Download finished before i even got started with this tutorial and got wrecked in the advanced tutorial battle i still won but like the game itself said “do we even deserve to call it a victory?”
Never in my 30yrs gaming have I played this type of game. But free is free, so why not give it a shot. And so far I've enjoyed it, even though I have nfi whats going on yet. So that bought me here. Thank you for a great video and hopefully my new save file will be a bit less chaotic lol
Just A quick question. How do you turn on/off the over lay that shows your hero/general portrait and city information ribbon on the campaign map. I have cats that like to run across the keyboard?
My hero disappeared after trying to auto-resolve a battle. When I bring up the stats, the buttons to replace or select a different hero are not there. Is this a bug or do I need to restart the campaign?
Can you make an advice video on army composition? I always autocomplete my battles and im curious in such a case whether it matters and if i can make an specific hero support focused and another one front line or whether both should be equally balanced.
Enjoyed your intro to TotalWar Troy. Question: What do the faint icons on the zoomed-out map signify? I'm referring to the "pot with fumes", the "winged horse", the "fort gate edifice", and several others. I just captured Cyparissos, north of Mycenae, and still see (zoomed out) the same icons, but no clue after zooming in as to what they represent.
so the Fort Gate edifice is a provincial Capital while the other little "hovel" looking buildings are settlements :) The pot with fumes and winged horse I'm actually not sure. I think that the Pot with Fumes is part of the STygian Voices mechanic for Aenas, and the Winged Horse might also be linked to another mechanic I'm afraid
I'm encountering a thing in the campaign where I'll conquer a settlement and it wont have any building slots even if I upgrade it. It has the pottery imagery in the background of the settlement where the building slots would be. Does anyone know if this is a glitch or is there something I am missing?
@@italianspartacus I actually deleted the game and campaign and reinstalled it in the hopes of fixing it but I remember it was my odysseus campaign and two of the three settlements were Altis and Calydon
is there any possible way to make battlemap UI similar to Rome 2 ?(Like big Colored flags above every unit) troy has small unit (flag or box) and no color distinction between friend and foe which makes very difficult to recognize friend from foe? is there any signs that seperate enemy troops when engaged in a fight?
One thing i dont understand yet, the recousce walth filter doesnt change, regardless wich recource i select, no colored show of where is what or how much. Is it shown somehow i overlooked? Didnt see it in your video either... :')
Really trying to find some enjoyment in this game and hoping these tutorials help. I've played all of the historical Total Wars since Rome 2 but my main complaint for Troy is the UI. I understand that its the "old" more traditional UI but its so sterile to me that it's so incredibly confusing to me. I honestly loved the improvements they made in TK and am so confused why they would go from a clean and stylized UI that was straightforward back to this. I have started an Ajax campaign but the UI is honestly what keeps frustrating me on this among other just gameplay things which aren't my general preference. Still debating on whethee or not I should just jump into Warhammer but I know the UI is identical so idk if the magical stuff is enough of an incentive. I really appreciate the videos and I hope they can convince me to stick through this. I just want to take a break from China without going back into the older catalogue.
Depends on how you want to play. I went with Zeus since he helps with diplomacy, and I want to try to make as many vassals as possible through diplomacy and gives nice buffs to units. If you want buffs to units, go with Ares or Athena. Hera is useful if you want to make capturing walled settlements easier and construct buildings quicker. Apollo if you are focusing on agents or use a lot of range. Poseidon would be useful when you want to sail to Troy. Finally, Aphrodite if you're going to build up your cities a little quicker. If you're still struggling to chose to check the Divine will tab and hover over each one and you can see what you get. The cult traits you always get as long as you have enough favour. The prayer buffs you get access to only when you do a prayer (which has a 4 turn cooldown and you can only do one at a time). You can always focus on multiple but you find it harder to max their favour and reach Worshipped. Hope this helps.
Hey man im new to this total war series & I can't decide witch to buy this one is good but its not Multiplayer & im more interested in online play aswell for $60... but Warhammer 2 looks killer as does three kingdoms for the money witch do you think is best/ more fun??? your the man thanks for the videos I love your content you got a nice voice and really good tips and advice big fan man!
Absolutely! Thank you for watching!
Thank you for in depth guide. Very pleasing to watch and learn. Keep it up 💪
Just wanted to add my thanks and appreciation for all your time and effort with respect to your very well made and informative Troy videos!
This is overwhelming. Also im new to Total War.
You've just stumbled upon one of the greatest game franchises of all time
@@LateRoundLegends I have 10 hours in the Achilles campaign, normal difficulty, and I'm getting my butt handed to me by the computer.
Ohh in what way? I do do quite a few let's plays and dabble with streams n what have you
That's Awesome how you explain everything for new players
even am not, but still its fun to watch :)
First crack at a total war game, EXTREMELY LOST! Came to this video and didn't skip a bit
well, that is some real detailed and well explained guide! i knew most from many other TW titles bot it got me some info about troy in special too.
I never liked the ally mechaninc in total war troy it doesent happen in the same turn while u can jusr train up a army in 3 turns or so and disband after
Aprecciate all time and effort you took to make this vid, it really helps🙏🏻❤️
This is an awesome tutorial, dude. Thank you! You got yourself a sub.
Welcome to the family :)
GET MEDIEVAL 2
@@magusi9029 yea i feel like they could add a toggle or free dlc that replaces the models with mythical ones
Thanks for the suggestions guys!
Spartacus: “Most new people will probably play Achilles because Achilles”. Me picking Sarpedon because he has a cool hat 😐 Edit: Didn’t even realize he had a Sarpedon series
His starting location is alright
@@Hans.Dewitt He has the best starting location imo, he has easy access, to giants in the south, Harpies in the east and cyclops in the west
Where is Brad
HE DESERVES TO BE HERE!
Pretty sure he'll be modded in at some point
Shogun Total War: was my first cherry.
Me too mate! I'm nearly 29 now and remember playing the original when I was young. I've played every total war except thrones and the mobile game one.
My favourite series.
@@fourlamb1 ill be 35 next month. I have shogun and shogun 2 in my steam and i still give them equal game time. Atleast 2 to 4 hours a week. I know Shogun 2 has atleast 4 thousand hours.
Nice ! Mine was Medieval II haha
There can be only one cherry.
Same here
Thanks for this. Just started playing and feel so lost. Lol
you said it maybe your first jump into total war
I am in thinking about I never listened about this I am playing this game because of troy movie 2003
especially Brad Pitt
First couple of Hours of play: I remembered how intrincate was the settlement management before the WH tone down. I am scratching my head in that department atm.
Anything I can do to help!?
@@italianspartacus you re son kind! No worries, the initial head scratchig is part of the fun!. Maybe a resources guide down the line? :)
@@italianspartacus a guide for agents would help a lot
ItalianSpartacus yes I figured it out, thanks man!
Isn't "tired" worse than "winded?" I always thought it went fresh, active, winded, tired, very tired, exhausted
Yes!! I definitely messed that up, I'm so sorry!
@@italianspartacus lol no worries man. Good video!
I just downloaded this game. I have never played any Total war game. and I know I'm gonna suck before I get better but this video helped me a lot in understanding wtf is going on. hehe
Thanks, very helpful.
Thank you, I appreciate all the help!
I don't have a great PC but I never played Warhammer or Three Kingdoms...Troy is a nice free addition to my total war collection.
Thanks for the crash course man!
definitely my dude!
Definitely did!! I apologize for that greatly!
I win!
It's a pretty solid choice man.. But shogun 2 is amazing! :)
Good information, thanks for putting this together
Thank you for the guide!
As soon as i have time i will play, just got it on Epic
OUTSTANDING VIDEO!!!
I have some is it right for you videos coming out just to help with that :))
@@italianspartacus Very cool, looking forward to it!
brilliant video doode
2 years later and im using it still Noice work
Thanks for the informative vid 👍
Any time! :D
i honestly dont know why they didnt make King Leonidas the king of Sparta...... but hey still loving the game and loved the tutorial for a 1st time player of total war!! (subbed and keen to learn more)
Hahaha because this is a centuries before Leonidas :)
Great job!! Thanks!
NTW was my first total war game. Still love it
I actually think I’ll play Hector first... I’ve always favored Troy over the Greeks in the Trojan War.
Trojan Horse has sent you a friend request.
@@lakostakis Τroyans were also greeks

How do I get rid of envoys and spies in my cities/armies? I keep catching them but they sit in my city. How do I remove them?
rly nice clip m8,keep it up
Brother Italian Spartacus , I have bought the game just yesterday from Epic , and Wanted to get into detail in this Game , Because I am totally new to Total War .
@ 1:04:25 Nice feature to see exactly what influences opinion in diplomacy.
Wonderful guide, thank you! Hopefully you did a combat one too
Yup! It's somewhere up there :)
this guy is a king
Nice- getting fancy!
Good tip also get your main house fast to tear 3 get chariots and smashh all your enemies fast :D
@@merrylildeath3113 OK thanks.
Of course do look at this guide and the ones on the factions to learn how they play and which one you may like more
Feel free to look through the manual/encyclopedia
really nice guide, now I know how to play. thanks
What do i use agents and priests for?
Also can you make a guide on battles or winning a battle against the fortified City
Great Video. Thank you.
good video, thanks
enjoyed the vid
Just bought the full package with all the dlc on steam. Playing as Agamemnon (easy) and there are pop-ups every 3 seconds!! Fun but overwhelming.
Download finished before i even got started with this tutorial and got wrecked in the advanced tutorial battle i still won but like the game itself said “do we even deserve to call it a victory?”
Grazie for this video. It really helped me a lot. I'm still a noob xD
I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT ALL THESE FACTIONS...
Probably ill just watch till the next total war game!!
Bruh this game has 10 factions. That's nothing. Rome 2 had 120
@@ivlivsvalerivsmaiorianvs3884 you can recognize the factions in Rome 2

Never in my 30yrs gaming have I played this type of game. But free is free, so why not give it a shot. And so far I've enjoyed it, even though I have nfi whats going on yet. So that bought me here. Thank you for a great video and hopefully my new save file will be a bit less chaotic lol
Downloading this game thinking it's nothing but battlefield fighting and maneuvers lol
Just A quick question. How do you turn on/off the over lay that shows your hero/general portrait and city information ribbon on the campaign map. I have cats that like to run across the keyboard?
Zoom out and you should see it on the right :) little check boxes
I dont always do this but ill like and subscribe just for you
Thank you so much brother :) I hope your next battle went better hahahah
I just captured Cyparissos, north of Mycenae, and still see (zoomed out) the same icons, but no clue after zooming in as to what they represent.
so the Fort Gate edifice is a provincial Capital while the other little "hovel" looking buildings are settlements :)
The pot with fumes and winged horse I'm actually not sure.
Hmm.. And you've chosen occupy??
@@italianspartacus yessir Its a shame too because I actually loved the game until I encountered that issue and it totally threw me off
That's very very odd.. What faction are you playing as? Which city is it? Let me see if I can get to the bottom of this!
@@italianspartacus I actually deleted the game and campaign and reinstalled it in the hopes of fixing it but I remember it was my odysseus campaign and two of the three settlements were Altis and Calydon
@JJ McD Wow I feel like an idiot now good to know it wasnt a bug though thanks bud
is there any possible way to make battlemap UI similar to Rome 2 ?(Like big Colored flags above every unit) troy has small unit (flag or box) and no color distinction between friend and foe which makes very difficult to recognize friend from foe? is there any signs that seperate enemy troops when engaged in a fight?
First 2 minutes in and I feel like you made this video for me
I read your diary!
what God should i chose for Agamemnon?
