I remember a very old Odyssey movie. There was a moment when a god talks to Odysseus and he is like "I like you because unlike other men, you actually think things through before doing stuff." My favorite Greek hero
@@D4rkf0x21 I have no idea, i'm sorry. I was a kid and only watched some parts. I do remember it looked quite old, very primitive in the special effects department.
As a Greek, I am happy with your choice, Oddyseus usually gets ignored a lot cause too much of his journey is shrouded in mythology but the man really went through so much.
Realistically the Odyssey seems like an echo of the Sea Peoples Invasions, which were mostly conducted and lead by the Greeks! But it sounds wierd that they were directed towards the West, but there were many Greeks who went there after the Trojan War. An other great example is Diomedes, who founded 11 cities in South Italy!!!
@@markselby9352 It really is this colour, it you look at the sea round the time of sunset or sunrise. And sometimes if wine reflects the sky, it has a very sea-like hue.
Pretty sure "wine-dark" stems from the lack of names for certain colors. Imagine a blue so dark it's almost black. Well one of the closest things they would have had to describe that color was wine, as very dark wine would appear a similar hue, thus "wine-dark" was a way everyone would understand what you meant even if they hadn't seen whatever was being referred to
Actually Odysseus is one of the most well established heroes in Greek mythology Homer the writer of Iliad wrote Odyssey the journey back home of the hero which we have a whole class dedicated to studying and translating the script to modern greek
Artistically this game is rally magical... The campaign map especially, with the stylized mountains and starry sky in the distance, with that awesome music playing, really feels like they captured the magical feel of greek mythology!
While I don't love the design of some of the heroes, overall this looks really promising and I am catching myself falling in love with the less historical setting of the legendary siege of troy more and more.
I wasn't expecting an Óh Brother Where Art Thou' refference in one of your videos... Also: the nature of Odysseus's adventures is why scholars believe the Illiad and Odyssey were either written by different people, or Homer based his texts on already existing legends, since they point out that there is a massive difference between the martial heroes of the Illiad (including Odysseus), who use brute strength, and the cunning Odysseus of the Odyssey, indicating that the archetype and expectations of the Greek hero changed massively in between the two texts. So either they were written at least a century apart, or the Odyssey was based on a series of legends that were invented much later than the Illiad.
@@barbarogenije True. I'm not saying that he isn't cunning in the Illiad, but the difference between it and the Odyssey is still remarkable. Besides, to me, his role as "foil" of Achilles was more a result of his patience as opposed to Achilles's impulsiveness
Damn it wasn’t just the tech demo, this really does look like a free to play mobile/tablet version of total war, what the hell is wrong with Ca... Anyways, my Greek mythology knowledge is thoroughly lacking and I will definitely enjoy learning from you, but still, this makes no sense... it looks 5 years older than tw:Warhammer...
Oh yes, a new Surrealbeliefs Total War campaign, always promising buckets of awesome! Also, you forgot one thing about Odysseus: he was portrayed by Sean Bean, and that is definitely a point in awesomeness and badassery.
Off topic but I just wanna update if you want to play crusader kings 3 you can relate your stories there and you can marry your own sister just saying hahahaha pls try
Btw, you should have typed "Anax" (Anaktos in the genitive form) of Ithaca", be cause "basileus", in the Mycenaean era, was the title for a leader of a small number of men and sometimes that person got to be the king's secretary. Now, because if you were king's secretary you could know almost everything in the kingdom, later on, basileus, came to be the word for the king ;-) . P.S.: Still, in modern Greek the word for Palace is Anaktoron.
It's so funny to me how I just recently watched movie "Troy" and thought about installing Rome 2 again to play as one of the Greek factions and then all of a sudden this game comes out of no where.
The Greek myths are the best, in my opinion. They have normal people, in some cases, going against incredible odds and achieving greatness. Odysseus, Theseus, and Perseus being prime examples,
Odysseus didn’t want to go to war. He was forced when they threatened his child. He didn’t see the need to defend the honor of another man who lost his wife, specially not with the lives of his people. When they arrived in Troy the Greeks hesitated to disembark cause it was foretold that the first to land in Troy will die; thus Odysseus jumped over the ship and used a shield to prevent him from touching Trojan soil, another soldier jumped and was instantly killed. He also sneaked into an enemy camp and assassinated the enemy General. Truly he was a bad ass.
Just a quick heads up on pronunciations. When you see the letter o and i together like this "oi" you pronounce it like you'd pronounce a normal Greek i so for example kranioi is pronounced kranii. Hope this helps you pronounce city names better.
Alex the dominator I have taken ancient greek for like three years now. So my pronunciation is decent. But I doubt I could pronounce it in modern greek.
Very nice, but i have to ask. Why is Achilles labeled as unreliable in the diplomacy screen? It doesn't make sense to me since i'm from greece and we do the Illiad and the odyssey in school, and in none of them does Achilles come across as unreliable.
More of the same, Ill be playing the game for sure but I think is timr CA reinvents the wheel, if it wasn't free I would no even buy and I have had all Total wars to date
I prefer Palamede to him. He was much smarter and did not deserve the betrayal since Odysseus swore an oath to help Elena husband when she choose Menelao between her many suitors...
Hey Surreal, since Odisseus was kind hearted and not an conqueror (even thought you are dead if you mess with him) i suggest you do not conquer at first sight and you give a chance to other factions that did not do nothing lorewise to hurt you.
I'm so looking forward to this game! Such a cool setting.I'm not sure it's exactly your cup of tea, Surreal though on The Epic Games Store there's a 4x game called Old World set during a similar time if you'd check that out, I think it'd make a cool Let's play with all of the dynasty mechanics.
Question (bc I was thinking about it): With the new Greenskins update for Total War Warhammer 2, will you ever make another playthrough for Grimgor? To prove that Grimgor iz best, betta than all da rest?
So glad Surreal is playing this game as I'm still not sure if I'm sold on it even though I love ancient greek mythology, with Surreal doing a lets play I know we'll get an honest opinion of the game as a whole.
Some of the character designs is similar to the Brad Pitt, Troy movie, like Paris. The dialogue is even a direct replica in some instances. The design of Helen could have been better.
I'm not a huge fan of the bronze age but watching someone who actually enjoys the period made me want to read up on it a bit more and reread the iliad and odyssey. Great job, surreal!
Cant wait to play as Odysseus! Somebody has to mod Argos as a compagnion or smth, I litterally cry everytime I read the part where he dies, and Id love to see him in game.
If you folks enjoyed this, I'll have a second part up later today.

What do you mean ?
Of course we enjoy it.. do it again

Ilovecookies poor old PA does not play TW games any more So happy to find other channels that play TW games.
Looking forward to a great program.👍👍👈👈
Sean Bean survived in that movie tho xD
Sean Bean was one of the few Central characters in that who DIDN'T die.

Odysseus played by Sean Bean in the movie Troy. Such a good film even if it wasn’t too accurate
"The wine-dark sea lures me from my home" I wonder if that's a reference to the famously wine coloured sheep in the Odyssey
Homer describes the sea multiple times in the Iliad and Odyssey as ‘wine dark’ so it’s probably just referring to that
