@@ZhaoZiLong it's difficult at the beginning even paradox games eu4 and ck3 etc are very complex but once you understand the main machanics of the game there aren't that hard ...but it's super fun to play cause every campaign is a bit different....
@@SatoriHaddad I'm not super experienced with Paradox games but it feels like in those you can barely know what's going on and still have fun even if you're "losing" the game, whereas in Total War I always just feel kinda demoralized. But Three Kingdoms is on sale and by God I will learn this shit if it kills me (or not)
Thanks for the video (today Sept 24, 2021), I'm 69 years old, my brain not as sharp but will try and be patient with this game. The strategic level on this game is many levels higher than Warhammer 2 which is what I wanted. I bought Three Kingdoms yesterday. Unlike Paradox games (which are good) I get tactical control over battles but it is the diplomacy, relationships and economics that really shine in this game as seen in this great guide and other guides. Now it falls on me to learn the connections and pay attentions to interrelated factors. Unfortunately many gamers don't put much effort into learning and want to be handheld through every aspect. I think this will be a great game for me. Anyways Thank You.

@@anthonyblack6859 consoles cannot run three kingdoms on full Ultra at 4k. Don't be ridiculous. I have a 3800X, 32gb ram and a 3080 Suprim x. Still can't get consistent 60fps on ultra benchmark on 1440p, let alone 4k.
is there a way to execute the movement order you've already given (i.e. you send somone on a 5 turn move and on the next turn you can just press a button for him to proceed)
@@hoopaj00 If its anything like the other Total Wars, the movement order will take place once you hit the end turn button. Any units that have movement points left and have actions given to them should move.

I cant get into it like Shogun 2 or Warhammer 2. This game just feels weird. I love the campaign stuff in this game this has the best diplomacy system by far but the actual gameplay itself like combat is just like Warhammer 2 combat. You just smash units together and use extra ones to flank even when not playing on Romance, like unit typing doesnt even have a point. TLDR pros and cons. PROS: *Best optimized Total War game to date. *Graphically beautiful. *Adds the best mechanics to the campaign map I've personally ever seen. *The best diplomacy system by far. *Gives you the ability to play an arcade type mode of style like Warhammer 2, while also giving you the ability to play like older more serious playstyles. *A good amount of units. *Incredible modding support. ============================ CONS: *Combat feels bad.
I'm a TW fanboy, mainly with Napoleon and Rome under my belt. But as a longtime resident of the Middle Kingdom (10 years in country so far), I jumped right in to the Three Kingdoms. And oh, man, was I overwhelmed! The factions and diplomacy in particular were extraordinarily difficult for me to understand. I think this video has given me a better feel for that stuff, but I'll know more once I've played it again. Anyway, thank you!
With great respect to your race and names, but there should be mod that changes these names to something not impossible to remember. I would say a string of numbers would be easier to remember. The thing is that these names cant be linked to anything that would trigger memory. At least for the rest of us...

Just finished the video. I think I got too used to Warhammer... My first Three Kingdoms campaign is a failure. I messed up my characters' skills, my army compositions and my settlements' buildings. I think I did the tech tree wrong too. O_o. Glad people like you are already releasing guides to help people like me out.

I just bought Three Kingdoms on a whim since the sale was getting close to its end. I do have a fair share of TW Warhammer2 playtime so I am not starting at zero, but when I found this guide it certainly made a lot of things easier. While it doesn't get too complicated it is in-depth enough to to cover most important things so I don't have to fear to overlook a mechanic which doesn't exist in TWW2. And that makes the start so much easier. I appreciate your work!

Just one point of correction: estates income is not based on how powerful someone was historically. It's based on how wealthy that person or their family was in "the lore." The Sun family were like the Kennedy family of ancient China, Sun Jian was supposed to be a direct descendant of Sun Tzu. They may have had a lot of private wealth or just family connections, and used that to fund their entrance into warfare and power politics. Total Warhammer has a similar thing, but every faction gets exactly the same 2500 base income, whereas in TW:3K it's variable. Late game it's irrelevant, but early game that extra 1k income for the Sun clan is really nice.

Those family estates really seal the deal for an easier campaign. Ma Teng is very difficult with his family estates penalty
@@italianspartacus I think Sun Jian has the most potential for early game weirdness, because you can push south past the Han into territory that is literally abandoned/empty and then develop it using your estates income. You could play Sim City for 50-100 turns while the other warlords are beating each others brains in. If you play any of the Northern warlords you're tied to your starting territory, doubly so if you have crappy estates income.
I've been playing ROT3K since grade school and you have no idea the anxiety attack this game almost game me when I started playing. It even told me mid game that I might wanna lower the difficulty lmao! As a Lifelong Sun Jian and Three Kingdoms fan this is exactly the tutorial I was looking for and it happened to be with the right character. Allah bless you. Thank you. I really needed this.
Wow may come back to this a few times but very well done. Lots of info and depth in the game. While confusing at first I can only see it adding more replayability and fun for the future. The last one I played was Rome 2 so this is quite a jump! Thanks for your help!

in my gongsun playthrough my faction heir ended up one of unhappiest from sibling rivalry even though all his siblings were babies, says alot about my heir when his only rivals are small children

I haven’t played a lot of Total War, started with Shogun 2, then Warhammer 2 which I have very limited time in. I’m loving the Romance campaign mode and I completely messed up my first campaign as Liu Bei and started a new one with the bandit queen (I know she has a very hard start but I like her a lot) and I’m doing a lot better. This video had a lot of little tips I had no idea I could do as of course I’m still learning, but this was great to help me out. Love the content as I just found out about you from a friend.

Started playing this game recently, new to Total War (Got free with new PC). Played for 2 hours and then everyone starved and income pummelled. This was extremely helpful and very well put together.
Great video, really very clearly to understand you and what you are talking about. What might be handy, i find it even clearer, is when you talk about swapping units or when you are talking about appointing a new general for the army that you actually do it. that way we can see what happens and it makes it more clear. It might also result in explaining an additional change. Anyway, again great video and i'm gonna watch the series to fully understand this game. So thank you for taking the time to make this video.

Beautiful game, I'm already in love with it. I never liked any total war game before this one and the only reason is that I'm in love with the novel itself lol. Playing Romance of The Three Kingdoms Koei games are also fun and this one took ALOT from ROTKXI, but still this one is more in depth even though there are few negative points I will mention below: - Character names are not the most common ones, they use names that are either not so common or different than the novel. - Characters abilities kinda matches the novel, but I noticed that they either overestimate a character's personality or underestimate it or even give abilities that makes it weird. - Portray sometime do not match the characters personality. ( (eg. Taishi Chi is a powerful vanguard, the portrait in the game made him look like a melo personality with not so much good instinct bar). Anyway the game in general is amazing, and thanks for this video I would also like it if you make a video showing how to win a war (especially when you're outnumbered).
Thanks a lot for the "make this work" diplomacy feature explanation. I was avoiding it because i thought that it is ment as a threat, that you try to force them to make the deal with you or else you declare war on them :D So i didnt use it at all. BTW is Dong Zhuo scripted to die at the beginning of the campaing and it happens each time? Or was it just bad luck that my biggest enemy i was looking forward to fight long term died in like 5th turn? :D
Holy hell, I'm way too dumb for this. I love Total War ever since Rome1. 3K is like walking into a bar I once knew where my friends would say 'sup man' but now they say things like henceforth and filibuster, walked right out. Just bought this game to continue my total war journey. This video helped a lot thanks i definitely feel like this could be 1 of the best total war games made
All the new features in this game are def cool AF. But the one thing I like the most about this one is that total war is FINALLY optimized. I got a i7 7700 and a 1080 ti, and SHOGUN still lags for me on bigger battles, and that game is 9 years old. This one came out last year and I can play on all ultra settings with very little lag at all, even on big ass battles. Def a breath of fresh air for total war fans.
Thank you for the great guide! Did they change some aspects of the UI in recent updates? Some screens used to be a bit cleaner/easier to read imo. I find the UI quite overwhelming :D
I sure hope CA plans to add a lot more unique portraits at least (preferably portaits and models, but I will take what I can get)...The gameplay is amazing, to be sure. BUT I know all of these characters quite well, even read the novel (the fictional book by Luo Guangzhong not the historical records) before there was even a Nintendo game based on this time period (I am a bit long in the tooth eh lol). And seeing some of the greatest generals and advisors of the time as clones really kills way more of the immersion then it probably should. A generic Huang Gai, Wei Yan, even minor but powerful characters like Yan Liang and Wen Chou, Pang De, and strategists like Chen Gong or Ji Ling really bugs me....If they add ANYTHING as DLC, I am crossing my fingers for updates to these types of influential characters. When characters like Tao Qian are unique, but Guan Xing or Zhang Bao are not :(.....Maybe I am a bit spoiled, since Koei has been doing unique portraits for all 3200 characters for the past 5 or 6 instalments of Romance of the Three Kingdoms...Another edition I would love to see, would be the Nanman, and other tribal forces, particularly their beast armies, as well as the alternative culture styles of Qiang, (NW nomads and horsemaster barbarian tribes) Shanyue (river pirates south of Wu) And the Wuwan (who remind me of the Hun). Here is hoping..... Thanks for a great tutorial. Finding where all the little commands are has been tricky...For example, I JUST figured out that I could raise the rank of my characters LOL. But that's because I prefer to go in blind and figure things out, but with THIS game, that's taking longer then usual, particularly because some of the stuff is small, corner clicks.

I wish you covered more on the relationship aspect regarding dislikes between your commanders and court members that you own. Do I just dismiss members that have dislikes with my main character when they don't get along?
aw shit sorry man - you're right, i definitely brushed over that a lil too nonchalantly. mmm you can have them serve in the same army together. they'll eventually gather more and more traits which sometimes helps balance things out. you might even have two ccharacters that LIKE each other end up hating each other. Having them serve in the same military generally helps with their relationship, but sometimes two characters are just two polar opposites. Look at what traits are the detractors. Sometimes it's a minor one, and you get campaign "moments" that allow you to bolster that opinion over time. hope that helps?
I’ve been playing total war games for years and I had to come to this video. While the game is certainly in depth and is great, unfortunately it’s also much more complex. With shogun 2 and warhammer series I could just jump in and figure it out as I went along. The interface alone for this game requires its own tutorial. Lol. But thanks for the video. Im gonna buckle down tonight and finish it then watch advanced tips tomorrow.
Finally got this game last night, I love the total war series. Not far along yet tbh but it feels very fresh and so far love it. Battles are muchhh more brutal which I love, can’t just blindly throw units around
I've been playing RotTK since the Nintendo days, but this is my first Total War game ever. This plays so much differently than RotTK has ever played. Going to take a long time to get used to it.
Wow this is crazy. I just got the game off steam and as soon as I started I was really overwhelmed with all the functions. Just the fact that this video is almost an hour long shows how complex this game is. Not what I was expecting since I just wanted to just go into the game and start fighting right away. On that note, seriously thank you for putting out this guide for this game!

How many players can you have? My friends and I played Romance of the Three Kingdoms back when it was made by Koei. Some of those games you could have 10+ players which was really fun!
This seems to have some elements of Europa Universalis to it, which I think is a good thing. To me it looks like the perfect mix of political and administrative realism combined with being able to actually get into battle and directly affect the outcome. Love that concept.
I could really use a Crash Course for Three Kingdoms since the last Total War game I played was Attila. Wasn't a Warhammer fan and Thrones of Britannia didn't look that good.
I played Total war Rome 2 in 2015. I just bought a gaming laptop last night and three Kingdoms is way more difficult. I jumped right into Rome 2 like I just played yesterday

how...do you increases the amount of unit you have? no am not talking about the one in "Option". l am talking about individual unit. For example, my Cao Cao alone have a total of around 130 unit while this other guy, also alone, have total of around 320. My retinues amount is basically around 40 while his retinues are around 60~80. I am not afraid to fight this guy but am not sure how to better myself.

Red movement line signifies being in enemy/unfriendly territory, not empty movement points.

You could play Sim City for 50-100 turns while the other warlords are beating each others brains in.
If you play any of the Northern warlords you're tied to your starting territory, doubly so if you have crappy estates income.
I've been playing ROT3K since grade school and you have no idea the anxiety attack this game almost game me when I started playing. It even told me mid game that I might wanna lower the difficulty lmao! As a Lifelong Sun Jian and Three Kingdoms fan this is exactly the tutorial I was looking for and it happened to be with the right character. Allah bless you. Thank you. I really needed this.

I haven’t played a lot of Total War, started with Shogun 2, then Warhammer 2 which I have very limited time in. I’m loving the Romance campaign mode and I completely messed up my first campaign as Liu Bei and started a new one with the bandit queen (I know she has a very hard start but I like her a lot) and I’m doing a lot better. This video had a lot of little tips I had no idea I could do as of course I’m still learning, but this was great to help me out. Love the content as I just found out about you from a friend.

Started playing this game recently, new to Total War (Got free with new PC). Played for 2 hours and then everyone starved and income pummelled. This was extremely helpful and very well put together.
Great video, really very clearly to understand you and what you are talking about. What might be handy, i find it even clearer, is when you talk about swapping units or when you are talking about appointing a new general for the army that you actually do it. that way we can see what happens and it makes it more clear. It might also result in explaining an additional change. Anyway, again great video and i'm gonna watch the series to fully understand this game. So thank you for taking the time to make this video.

I am an original Shogun: Total War veteran and even I find Three Kingdoms as possibly the best of the series but also the most difficult to master.

Beautiful game, I'm already in love with it. I never liked any total war game before this one and the only reason is that I'm in love with the novel itself lol. Playing Romance of The Three Kingdoms Koei games are also fun and this one took ALOT from ROTKXI, but still this one is more in depth even though there are few negative points I will mention below:
- Character names are not the most common ones, they use names that are either not so common or different than the novel.
- Characters abilities kinda matches the novel, but I noticed that they either overestimate a character's personality or underestimate it or even give abilities that makes it weird.
- Portray sometime do not match the characters personality. ( (eg. Taishi Chi is a powerful vanguard, the portrait in the game made him look like a melo personality with not so much good instinct bar).
Anyway the game in general is amazing, and thanks for this video I would also like it if you make a video showing how to win a war (especially when you're outnumbered).
This guy deserves 1M subs tbh !

Thanks a lot for the "make this work" diplomacy feature explanation. I was avoiding it because i thought that it is ment as a threat, that you try to force them to make the deal with you or else you declare war on them :D So i didnt use it at all. BTW is Dong Zhuo scripted to die at the beginning of the campaing and it happens each time? Or was it just bad luck that my biggest enemy i was looking forward to fight long term died in like 5th turn? :D
Holy hell, I'm way too dumb for this. I love Total War ever since Rome1. 3K is like walking into a bar I once knew where my friends would say 'sup man' but now they say things like henceforth and filibuster, walked right out. All the new features in this game are def cool AF. But the one thing I like the most about this one is that total war is FINALLY optimized. I got a i7 7700 and a 1080 ti, and SHOGUN still lags for me on bigger battles, and that game is 9 years old. This one came out last year and I can play on all ultra settings with very little lag at all, even on big ass battles. Def a breath of fresh air for total war fans.
Been playing total war since Rome one and medieval too, yet this game. Still throw me off with the way unit recruitment works.

I sure hope CA plans to add a lot more unique portraits at least (preferably portaits and models, but I will take what I can get)...The gameplay is amazing, to be sure. BUT I know all of these characters quite well, even read the novel (the fictional book by Luo Guangzhong not the historical records) before there was even a Nintendo game based on this time period (I am a bit long in the tooth eh lol). And seeing some of the greatest generals and advisors of the time as clones really kills way more of the immersion then it probably should.
A generic Huang Gai, Wei Yan, even minor but powerful characters like Yan Liang and Wen Chou, Pang De, and strategists like Chen Gong or Ji Ling really bugs me....If they add ANYTHING as DLC, I am crossing my fingers for updates to these types of influential characters. When characters like Tao Qian are unique, but Guan Xing or Zhang Bao are not :(.....Maybe I am a bit spoiled, since Koei has been doing unique portraits for all 3200 characters for the past 5 or 6 instalments of Romance of the Three Kingdoms...Another edition I would love to see, would be the Nanman, and other tribal forces, particularly their beast armies, as well as the alternative culture styles of Qiang, (NW nomads and horsemaster barbarian tribes) Shanyue (river pirates south of Wu) And the Wuwan (who remind me of the Hun). Here is hoping.....
Thanks for a great tutorial. Finding where all the little commands are has been tricky...For example, I JUST figured out that I could raise the rank of my characters LOL. But that's because I prefer to go in blind and figure things out, but with THIS game, that's taking longer then usual, particularly because some of the stuff is small, corner clicks.

I wish you covered more on the relationship aspect regarding dislikes between your commanders and court members that you own. Do I just dismiss members that have dislikes with my main character when they don't get along?
aw shit sorry man - you're right, i definitely brushed over that a lil too nonchalantly.
mmm you can have them serve in the same army together. they'll eventually gather more and more traits which sometimes helps balance things out. you might even have two ccharacters that LIKE each other end up hating each other.
Having them serve in the same military generally helps with their relationship, but sometimes two characters are just two polar opposites. Look at what traits are the detractors. Sometimes it's a minor one, and you get campaign "moments" that allow you to bolster that opinion over time.

With shogun 2 and warhammer series I could just jump in and figure it out as I went along. The interface alone for this game requires its own tutorial. Lol.

Finally got this game last night, I love the total war series. Not far along yet tbh but it feels very fresh and so far love it. Battles are muchhh more brutal which I love, can’t just blindly throw units around
I've been playing RotTK since the Nintendo days, but this is my first Total War game ever. This plays so much differently than RotTK has ever played. Going to take a long time to get used to it.
Wow this is crazy. I just got the game off steam and as soon as I started I was really overwhelmed with all the functions. Just the fact that this video is almost an hour long shows how complex this game is. Not what I was expecting since I just wanted to just go into the game and start fighting right away. On that note, seriously thank you for putting out this guide for this game!

This seems to have some elements of Europa Universalis to it, which I think is a good thing. To me it looks like the perfect mix of political and administrative realism combined with being able to actually get into battle and directly affect the outcome. Love that concept.

how...do you increases the amount of unit you have? no am not talking about the one in "Option". l am talking about individual unit.
For example, my Cao Cao alone have a total of around 130 unit while this other guy, also alone, have total of around 320. My retinues amount is basically around 40 while his retinues are around 60~80. I am not afraid to fight this guy but am not sure how to better myself.
