This guide has been extremely useful for me seeing as the learning curve for this game is pretty steep. I just started playing this last week and have been impressed with the depth of both the campaign and infrastructure building aspect as well as the large scale battles. I grew up playing both the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games on the Super Nintendo, PS1 and PS2, and the Dynasty Warriors games on PS2. This game is the evolution of those titles that I wished for back then and I hope you are enjoying it as much as I am.
A tip for beginners, be mindful when using fire arrows and flaming shot. If your trebuchet or archers are sitting in a Forrest, and you tell them to shoot, you will set fire to the trees you're standing in as well as the area you're shooting at.
Note on "advanced formations". What the GAME calls "advanced formations" are just different arrangments of infantry/archers/cavalry. What you're referring to here are specific, special formations (like a wedge for cavlary) that some units have access to. Calling those advanced formations in this video might be confusing to some who might wonder why nothing like that is showing up when they click that icon.
One of the biggest things I've noticed is that an all melee hidden forrest assault can be incredibly mind screwy for the ai. Specially if they don't notice you
You can set guard mode, skirmish mode and run/walk mode in the options btw (i saw you setting guard mode in the video). Oh, also. Axes usually have higger charge bonus, higger armor piercing damage, but lower melee damage and lower armor aswell; they are good to rear charge unit that have engage another or can also be used to do a initial charge provided they are protected against cavalry and archers.
I’m glad you’ve been pumping out 3k content. None of the other TW you tubers have been covering it. Not even let’s plays. Keep it up PE, the game will only get better. Especially when they add more unit tiers of each type (I’m looking at you melee infantry and cav). Spear infantry and shock cav are in a good spot with enough diversity.
talamioros not very consistently. The overviews aren’t the most helpful, as you can pretty much get all the info that donkey is putting out by looking at the faction screens...
You’re s fantastic content creator mate. I’ve watched many of your vids in the last and never commented. Keep up the great work, your stuff is fantastic.
Archers are ridiculously OP. I started playing with the Radious Mod because it balances everything out and battles are lot more fun now. They're longer and archers serve a more realistic purpose now (also, it adds about another dozen or so unique units). Oh, and those cursed arrow towers are laser miniguns with pinpoint accuracy. I was able to hold out with just 4 garrison units in an UNWALLED settlement against a full stack with those arrow towers. Being so powerful took away the fun.
I honestly feel like generals in records mode even more overpowered from start, when you or your enemy don't have any high tier units. I had a battle where Yuan Shao killed 550 men on large model settings.
There is a lot of confusion in the comments regarding armor piercing damage, and I know this post is way late but I'm leaving this here anyway. Armor piercing damage is basically guaranteed damage. The damage is not somehow wasted if a unit doesn't have armor. For example - if a unit has 8 dmg and 32 armor piercing dmg that unit will do 40 dmg overall to unarmored units. The only real drawback to using armor piercing units against non-armored units comes from the attack rate, not the damage itself. Armor piercing units typically have slower attack rates such as crossbows vs regular bows, axes vs swords, etc. Please, if you're going to make guides on RUclips its important to learn these mechanics first, and be clear in your explanation as to not confuse people. Thank you.
I haven't played them all so not 100% but Total War games are pretty steady mechanically so I think its safe to assume its the same in all games. One dead give away that you can check is to look at the artillery damage. In Three Kingdoms trebuchets have 0 dmg and 2,000~ armor piercing dmg.

i used to see it like this: infantry(swords or axe) > spears > horse > infantry(that don’t have spears) archers is a jolly unit paper > rock > scissors > paper (sword) > (spears) > (horse) > (sword) Archers are a bonus category... they are weak to everything if in close combat but devastating to everything if it can shoot freely kinda like a jolly. at least in shogun 2 it was mostly like that now i don’t know why but in 3K there is this new unit(i think its called ji) that uses that all rounder spear weapon... that unit always fucks up my swords and axes units as-well as my cavalry....its just too good!... even when i got like 2 sword units against 1 of that ji unit its still better.... the only thing i found strong against them is arrows since they don’t got shields.... now i just use my sword and axes units as shield walls to cover the all rounder mighty spears from arrow fire.
I think if you can compare it like shogun2 it will be like this : Sword = Katana Axe = No-dachi Spear = Yari Ji = Naginata If it another total war games, then i believe Ji = pike
One point is that I think you should've pointed out how inaccurate Trebuchet are until the hit around rank 6. If you have fire arrows it might be more expedient to use an infantry unit to draw fire and just use fire arrows to set towers and gatehouses on fire and then withdraw while Using trebs to just open holes in the wall or fire on unit clumps inside.. Another trick is that if you're on a town map with forests, just set up our units within the forests so they can't be seen and then deploy. Since the game (usually) tries to pretend it doesn't cheat it will spread it's units around or cluster them in the town centre. Then you can just do a dash for the wall with your archers and set them up there while you break down the gate. Also works well if you have Trebs that can rain fire on the enemy when they try to get to the walls to fight back.
I didn't know trebuchets have increased accuracy when ranked up, does this apply to archers too? Also, when you say to send archers to the wall, do you mean that they should climb the walls, or just stand right outside (assuming towers are taken care of)?
@@jon99867 I'd assume all units get better as they rank up. And yeah, climb the walls so they can take over the towers...again, assuming you don't have fire arrows.
Just started playing 3k total war.. the new battle system is amazing. Thank you for this guide.. i wouldn't have known these small details. This game plays differently from shogun2.
Funny, considering that the Romans managed to conquer all of Europe with their gladus wielding soldiers. Everyone else was mostly still wielding spear at the time. Swords are shorter, but it meant that soldiers were able to get much closer to their enemy. And in close quarters, a sword beats a spear. Swords are also faster and can both cut and stab. You can only stab with a spear.
Spears are good when fighting against formation or cavalry that have no shields, but Roman Empire defeats their enemy who use spears by using shield, they just use shield to block the first attack and then they walk forward, thats all, because these spears don't have a blade on the side, is just a long stick when the top is not hitting enemy
PartyElite i am new to Total war and would like to now more about the controlls i have played enough of the campaign map but don’t know much about how to conroll the units so i will mostly delegate the battles would love if you would explain these
Every Total War game has pretty much the exact same controls. As such, there are already a lot of videos on using the controls and keyboard shortcuts in game. Party Elite has even made one or two of them himself. It might be for one of the older Total War games, but will still hold true all the same.
PartyElite may cover this in his upcoming beginner’s guide, but this video detailing movement from Warhammer still largely applies. ruclips.net/video/TAzA9FmP76U/видео.html
Do spears and halberds have an anti large bonus when in combat other than charge reflection? I've seen other people say they don't and some people say they do.
I like the videos, I'd imagine they take quite a bit of work. It would be nice though, if you could add timestamps with titles. Like 2:50 ranged infantry or "advanced formations 5:25 or something.
Honestly I find archers pretty underwhelming. They don't really get that many kills past the except in very specific circumstances. Most units have the loose formation or shields which makes archers's effectiveness lower, and once their units clash with yours, the effectiveness of your archers is even lower. I prefer cavalry by a long shot. With 3-6 cavalry units, it's the easiest thing in the world to wipe out enemy archer units. Afterwards, all you need to do is use some hammer and anvil tactics to reinforce/crush the enemy infantry. The only archers that I find truly hold their weight are the defenders of earth. Those guys are monsters. I've repulsed an army of 4000 against my army of 700 with mostly them.
The Onyx Dragons can get some beefy amounts of kills against lightly armored units if the army doesn't have a Strategist. That's what grants them the formations. Army with a Strategist general almost always outperforms one without, and it's really only worth giving up a Strategist general if you're in Romance mode where the generals are demi-gods. If you're playing in Records mode, I'd never give up a Strategist unless I had specific formation follower ancillaries.
@@KyleHatesBees I play romance exclusively and still take strategists. All my armies are green blue red. Unless I have some special character in which case I try to make them work.
@@thekingof300 Sentinels are solid choices for Strategist replacements if you can get the Follower that grants the Turtle Formation, because a lot of Sentinels can get Fire Arrows/Night battles quite early. Plus Sentinels are beasts at Duels with that extra melee evasion. The only thing that you cannot get without a Strategist is the trebuchet, as far as I'm aware.
@@KyleHatesBees Yeah, I ran a few armies with sentinels as my archer leaders. It was functional, but later in the game when I had a lot of defenders of earth, the ammunition bonus from strategists was just too good to pass up.
Click the enemies twice they will start to run at first and then start charges when your unit is close enough to the enemy unit you targeting, so carefull when commanding to charge as they will become tired, before they even started to charge. Be aware if you trying attacking a unit behind other unit eg. you trying charge to spearmen behind an axe unit. They still just gonna run, even though the axe unit that was infront of the spearmen you try to charge is already charging at you in this case the axe unit will charge at your unit who are still running try to be near enough to charge the spearmen. Hope you can understand what i'm meaning. PS. : english is not my native language(that's why i'm sorry)
General's aura - does it do more than give morale boosts to troops within the aura? Is there a difference between general classes when it comes to auras? Is it better to keep generals close to their retinues?
I watched this Video and memorized all the tactics. then I played He Yi of the yellow Turban rebellion and all the formation stuff not so true any more. Have an army of mid level units and a level 7 blue/green general but NO formations. just the generals with ancillaries' have formations for me, making them a little more difficult to come by. Unless I am doing something Rong. :-)
Militia units generally can't use formations regardless of the general. I think many if not all the yellow turban units are considered militia. I can confirm the lvl 4 blue general for traditional empires unlocks formations for the army if the unit didn't come with them by default.
Nope. If one unit does 10 base damage and 5 armor peircing damage and another does 10 armor pierce and 5 base, and they both attack a unit with no armor, there's no difference in performance, hence the "wasted" armor piercing damage.
I was pretty surprised at how good the AI is some times. I was playing a historical battle and the AI had set up some spears to hold an arrow tower, so i clicked the attack order for my swords to go up and charge, expecting the engagement to take a couple of minutes. I looked back 30 seconds later and the AI had pulled back the spears and charged my unbraced swordsmen with heavy cav, effectively destroying the entire unit. A far cry from the Medieval 2 AI.
I tend to find loose formation to be useless. For melee infantry there are better formations to use. For missile infantry it tends to mess up their firing (perhaps due to density/range of the troops they don't fire as much). For cavalry its useless as although your cavalry will come under fire you need them to have as much mass as possible for the charge.
Loose makes it more difficult for archers to hit. You want to use it for your own archers to counter enemy fire as well as every melee unit to close the gap. Obviously you will switch to a different formation as soon as you reach melee range.
@@fluxbomb3376 I tend to find it ****s up your own archers though. Because most skirmish battles start at extreme range and roughly stay there at harder difficulties. if you go into loose formation you either have to a) move forward under fire losing troops initally to get into range or b) only the front section of the formation will fire. Its better to just keep to extreme ranges, keep a dense formation and focus fire down enemy archers.
@@cirrusfish I mean if your getting hit by enemy trebuchet's your approaching it wrong. You can always snipe them with a hero or lone cav unit before the battle begins using terrain to your advantage. Failing that Use your own trebuchets to destroy them.
I really want to know when armor piercing is good or when its excessive. some generals and spear units have crazy armor piercing dmg so when is it better to use that then regular/balanced weapons/units
In my experience ap units are always superior, but not always efficient. AP units become efficient when they are battling armored units. Don't quote me on this, but I believe medium units begin to have enough armor that makes ap units efficient for their cost.
AP is one of those better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it situations. If you have the choice between hitting an armoured target with an AP unit then do so, but if none of them are armoured theres no reason not to kill them anyway.
@@PartyElite oh thank you thank you thank you. I've been googling this like crazy and I guess I just didn't use the right words cause no search results were ever talking about the same thing as I was searching for! Lol
They gave up on this game way to soon. I love warhamer it got me into total war but I been going back playing all the others. Wish they would of did more with this game. Best diplomacy in any total war
They start out not that good. With low accuracy, no explosion, not much ammo. As your strategist generals (the only type that can hire artillery/trebuchets) gains level and better equipment/followers they gain higher "cunning" which increases the ammo amount. The stretegist can also learn fire ammo, so the shots explode. And as the trebuchets get a few hits, and takes out some towers, they gain XP, and with that a lot of accuracy. By the mid game you probably have some level 10 (max) trebuchets taking out 3-4 enemy units with their deadly accuracy and exploding shots, before they run out of their high ammo count. Of course the enemy might counter that if they can go into loose formations, don't bunch up their units, get a chance to counterfire with their trebuchets and archers, or even flank you.
@@lasse6435 interesting. Didn't really know nor care what generals attributes were for. Guess I'll dive into a wiki of some sort. Thanks for the answer.
I regularly win battles where I am greatly outnumbered in TW: Warhammer 2 and just got Three Kingdoms today....and I am losing way more troops than I think I should in even battles ...is there some major difference in the battles that I haven't noticed yet??
Extreme unit size puts a heavy toll on GPU's. Ultra is considered the limit for general use case scenarios. For large (@high) at least a GTX1070 or Vega56. For the extreme unit size I think you'd need sth like a GTX1080, RTX2070 or RX5700XT. Obviously 16gb RAM. Less than that is just not-done in modern pc gaming. For CPU it matters less, but at least sth with good multicore performance. Bare minimum I'd say is an i7 2600K or Ryzen 5 1600X. Intel's 6c/6t Coffeelake CPU's might do well, but don't even bother with their quadcores. They're dead.
This is really going to help me... after I'm done watching it 17 times to finally absorb it all lol

They still just gonna run, even though the axe unit that was infront of the spearmen you try to charge is already charging at you in this case the axe unit will charge at your unit who are still running try to be near enough to charge the spearmen. Hope you can understand what i'm meaning.

General's aura - does it do more than give morale boosts to troops within the aura? Is there a difference between general classes when it comes to auras? Is it better to keep generals close to their retinues?
TY
Very helpful to a newcomer like me
After the Wrath of Rong, Its hard to not watch your guides.
@PartyElite could I ask what camera mod you're using? It looks so cinematic and smoothly.
I can confirm the lvl 4 blue general for traditional empires unlocks formations for the army if the unit didn't come with them by default.
really like your contents. can't wait for more;)
16:42 Aren't armour piercing units also more effective against units not wearing body armour?
Riotously great tips!
Nope. If one unit does 10 base damage and 5 armor peircing damage and another does 10 armor pierce and 5 base, and they both attack a unit with no armor, there's no difference in performance, hence the "wasted" armor piercing damage.
@@hollywoodburford Thank you Hollywood!
Just exploit the bad AI like all TW games. A lot of these are good in pvp though, so thumbs up.
@@barrywise7185 In my games they run out of cities to engage in the open. Don't use the walls at all.
Ah, maybe the historical battles AI are better then. I havent played through enough of the campaign yet.
@@chompysaid204 They often try to ambush you or attack your rear while in a siege. It's not THAT bad.
Charge bonus has nothing to do with impact damage, or am I wrong?
@@henrybatten3315 And then have a single flame round from a trebuchet rout your entire unit.
@@cirrusfish I mean if your getting hit by enemy trebuchet's your approaching it wrong. You can always snipe them with a hero or lone cav unit before the battle begins using terrain to your advantage. Failing that Use your own trebuchets to destroy them.
Flank with cavalry and will probably win the battle
I wonder what Sun Tzu would've made of this, lmao.
>Swords are good against spears
>Axes are generally good against swords and spears
Why does this bother me?
Because it doesn't say how spears do against swords and/or axes?
Hasn't it always been that way with TW?
Because historical accuracy would get in the way of balance/variety.
In real life spears are good against cavalrys
Quan YUAN in real life spear is good for everything. Swords were unreliable at times
what's your gamma and brightness?
Are you using reshade? What settings are you using?
How did you do the click and drag of unit position? I thought you couldn't in this game
Is it because you have the traditional green dotted unit formation option?
How does your general have their own troops to command? Like normally they are alone but sometimes I see that he is part of a cav unit
If you play in records mode, your generals have a guard unit as opposed to being solo.
How do you get those cards on the left side? The one with all the unit details. I don't have that in my game during battle and it looks super helpful.
Hit "I" to toggle it, and then hover over units!
@@PartyElite oh thank you thank you thank you. I've been googling this like crazy and I guess I just didn't use the right words cause no search results were ever talking about the same thing as I was searching for! Lol
so units hidding on tree would be difficult if the tree is on fire
Is multiplayer still imbalanced? I started following this channel for mostly multiplayer breakdowns yet I can't see much of them.
Multiplayer is for short penis plebs.
Can someone please tell me the music at 2:39
I know it's late but can someone gives time stamp for when the each tips are starting?
They gave up on this game way to soon. I love warhamer it got me into total war but I been going back playing all the others. Wish they would of did more with this game. Best diplomacy in any total war
How good are siege weapons against infantry in this game ?
Is there any reform that archer can bring ammunition?
Also i wanted to ask, can this game bring such as reinforcement when battle?
I just wish this game use Rotk 12 for city development.
There is just to much stuffs packed in total War game.
Why so his unit stats show more then mine. I only see melee strength, toughness, and two other things
Are you playing battle or campaign. Im seeing increased numbers per unit so was curuios
I regularly win battles where I am greatly outnumbered in TW: Warhammer 2 and just got Three Kingdoms today....and I am losing way more troops than I think I should in even battles ...is there some major difference in the battles that I haven't noticed yet??
9 months late but you need to abuse your heros
are you saying armor piercing damage doesnt do damage to unarmored units?
How do I do the fancy camera work like you??? 👀
Hey, is there anywhere I could find what PC specs you have to be able to run the game on extreme unit size so smoothly? Thanks
