They have to bring back avatar conquest, but don't add these stupid cheesy superhero's that can hold their own against 100+ men like war hammer and three kingdoms. Simple rally/stand and fight and second wing etc from shogun were somewhat believable abilities.
@Christopher Carter I don't know about the whole of China thing but I do think Korea and A bit of southern china should act as a sort of "end game goal" like hey congrats you've unified Japan but yknow theres 2 Empires up north that are just begging to be invaded, maybe have it so you can invade it early on but theyre way more advanced than you so you'll need all of Japan to even stand a chance, im aware the koreans in actual history would've gotten fucked if it wasn't for Admiral Yi but its a game so.
The one thing I’ve always wanted in Total War, I wish military victories carried diplomatic weight. Strangely the best that did this was Napoleon, where if you annihilated an enemy army the the point of embarrassment, they wouldn’t just raise another cheap stack and go again. I absolutely love that Three Kingdoms does this. If you obliterate an enemy formation, it’s hardly like the people are going to tolerate the enemy just throwing more troops at you, and his diplomatic standing will take a hit because everyone suddenly sees them as weak.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP I mean that's a fair point but you could just get a little montage in there and be like "even without this 3k still wins out" and make sure CA include that beautiful soundbyte if/when they create Shogun 3.
I feel like naval battles had the potential to be great. I enjoyed Empire Total War's time period & the map was global, I would have to play several naval battles just to stay competitive. Cannon naval battles are easier to control and more enjoyable: bracketing ships, T'ing Ships, sailing with the wind. Swinging broadsides back and forth, etc... I think naval battles need more work in general though. If land battles are sped up already, why not naval ship speed? Here's some tips I found on Shogun II's naval battles though if anyone's interested, an important caveat is increased reload speed and accuracy on Legendary difficulty though: 1. Auto resolve doesn't count your skill or AI deficiencies (bugs). which makes them much easier to fight. 2. Ships on fire is glitched, make sure to turn off fire at will ALWAYS when on fire, otherwise they will continue trying to fire at the enemy, even when being repaired the code tells them to try to fire at the enemy ship. Additionally, by riding into the wind you can put out the fire or you can ride with the wind behind you and put it out. 3. The wind determines the whole battle. Spend the initial part of the battle riding into the wind so then when the AI approaches you can use it to slingshot yourself towards them. You always want to be upstream of the wind than your enemy to win easily. 4. You can capture a ridiculous number of ships if you play it yourself and win, taking minimal casualties as well. 5. The repair feature repairs hull strength as well as fire when you use it. 6. Although it takes longer, spending time building and researching a navy, then using it strategically easily pays dividends when you can hold all the trade nodes, even on legendary. Most players dislike navies since they don't understand the nuances such as wind and fire. Additionally they can be slow if you don't speed them up. Get some practice on battles you know you will win. 7. Like in multiplayer some ships are totally broken, taking out anything it comes across and more. 8. Naval Battles in FoTS are slightly different than Empire (which are really cool btw). Mostly with cannons the priority should be T'ing the enemy ship. This involves keeping them perpendicular to your broadsides. Additionally you want to be upstream in the wind as well. That being the main objective of naval battles. While FoTS has steam engines, many ships still have sails, and these affect your movement speed going into the wind or not. 9. Once your in the Wind on FoTS, vigorously swing your ships sides back and forth to maximize the amount of volleys fired at the enemy ship. While they will T' your ship when firing, this position actually makes you a smaller target. However, it does make your enemy safe from your counter fire if you aren't swaying sides. Additionally, boiler explosions are caused by too much damage to the side hull or where a volley hits similar to black powder storage explosions in Empire or Napoleon. 10. Use the shot types effectively. if vs wooden, always start with explosive which you can select pre- battle. Fires occur frequently and they eviscerate "soft" hull and under hull. You may want to switch to Armor piercing if it's a thick/large wooden ship, then switch to explosive if proving futile. If vs Ironclads, start with armor piercing shells and switch to explosive if they are routing or have a weak hull this then has a chance to start fires or cause surrender unlike previously. 11. Finally, focus on only one ship at a time to maximize morale damage, and get early routes. SHIPS WON'T STOP routing once they start. You want to "use" your naval units, never just press attack and wait for them to do it automatically. 12. (This is out of order), let medium Bunes (i.e. heavier ships) go first and let bow Kobayas catch up. Sending them first will make them get shot to pieces and route early. You want all your forces together to "gang up on" enemy ships. I really enjoyed naval battles in Empire which is why I'm somewhat experienced. It's very fun to swing your ship back and forth.
IMO, wet navy always have a problem in strategy game, especially one that has either supply cap or maintenance cost. Because if you deploy navy in expect of contested water, but then it turned out geography of the future enemy base/city/settlement does not permit navy, or they didn't use navy but focused solely on land army to attack you through land, then you waste a ton of resource and time that could be use to strengthen your land army, and this lack of land troops sometime can screw you over because you can't dismiss the navy and recruit new land units to counter the threat in time. Air units in strategy games usually doesn't have this problem because they're not restricted by terrain like the navy.
I always abused capture mechanics to build a massive fleet of bow kobayakawa and medium bune that when stacked can swarm any fleet, especially since enemies seem to divide their navies into 2-3 stacks when it isn’t practical. There is virtually no input cost either besides repairing the captured ships, much cheaper than building (and of course upkeep).
Here are some of my ovservation on Fots Naval though: I. CAMPAIGN MODE 1. Don't mind the wind direction. All sails and mast are folded in. All ships use steam engines. 2. Solid shots has the fastest reload rate, armor piercing rounds 2nd, explossive shells are the slowest to relaod and has shorter range. Also Solid shots has the most probability of a Magazine explosion(the thing where a warship explodes and split in half). 3. Trapezoid Range Indicator. You can 1 v 10 any attacking AI fleet, and not take any damage. Very time consuming though. As the 1st sentence suggest. Every ship whether bow chasers, or broadside has the longest range on the furthest edge of the trapezoid range indicator. You can use that trapezoid edge to keep distance from enemy ships in a forward line formation. The A.I. ships will always try to catch you on their center of their trapezoid range. You guys will be running in circles with one until 1 enemy ship is left. As long as you find and be in the inner of that circle, which the enemy fleet will dictate(use the map to see where the inner circle is). Suggested ships: Kanrin maru>kaiten>Kaiyu frigate. *Does not matter if wooden hull or iron clad(all ships in this tier have 750 range). Will not work if enemy fleet has warrior/laOcean/roanoke(850 range, never seen AI have these ships), or kotetsu(1k range). Also won't work on narrow/small maps. Also hard to 4. when attacking, use manual broadside and keep the furthest range 750 ranger ships could have. I do not mean the H button. The manual firing of broadsides will fire its shells its furthest possible, further than the trapezoid range indicator. 750 ranger enemy ships will just be sitting ducks. 5. You guys will hate the kanrin maru and the kaiten. Very hardy and cheap ships. Kanrin maru also has the lowest chance of mag explosion and engine overheat problem. 6. a lucky shot on the center of gunboats and torpedo boats will disable all of their 3 only guns. They are already easy to route or explode but torpedo boats are fun defending a destroyed port. II. Multiplayer 1. Wind direction also negligible. 2. LaOcean/Roanoke/Warrior will prolly win againts lower leveled players that has none of these. 1 kotetsu is not enough. 3. Do not let enemy flagship(kotetsu) dictate your range. Should their be an instance that its half way through the battle and enemy has only 1 kotetsu left, and you got an Ocean/roanoke left. Just rush it, forget manuevering, go straight at him. Kotetsu reverse speed is slow. Do not let him get a bunch of shots kiting at you until you sink or explode or route. 4. Narrow/small maps calls for different strategies compared to open sea battles. I think the use of multiple kotetsu kiting is already well known so, won't be pointing it out.
So long as they don't make generals into superhero's that can last in a 1v100 fight like in warhammer and three kingdoms I would buy it. Also avatar conquest is a must.
When it comes out in 2055 maybe. They haven't come out with any total war 3 games, and there are total war games that came before Shogun 2. There is just as much chance for medieval 3 or empire 2. Even more of a chance of something new like Troy. I like Shogun 2 also, I just don't see it coming anytime soon. I'd be shocked if we got it before we got a third entry of something else. I don't think shogun 2 was anywhere close to their most popular game. A lot of brainlets think it's bad because of superficial reasons like "not enough units".
I dont think they could do it justice, the beauty of S2 lies in the unit collisions and 1 on1 fights of the soldiers paired with a high leathality that rewards good micromanagement so the battles dont become boring not sure if it is there engine but no TW game after S2 pulled it off, they are all just action figures swinging in each others directions with HP Pools slowly depleting
SuperNintendawg You definitely do not know Nobunaga well. He's most well-known for his far out of time economic and civil reform. Cao Cao, though being a great leader, did not achieve such reputation
@@hoangnamnguyen5535 I didn't say he didn't do those things, just that Cao Cao was better. Also, Cao Cao died powerful, Nobunaga was murdered by his own subordinate. Also, Cao Cao was a great poet :)
3K is my first total war game, and I must say what got my attention was the lore around the period and the fact that I didn't know much about it. Living in South America you don't get to know much about Asia in general, and the game presents it in a beautiful and compeling way. After playing, I came to youtube and watched a lot of videos about China's history hahaha Just bought the World Bretayed DLC during the summer sale.
well if it about three kingdom period.then i recommend you play hack and slash games called dynasty warriors series ( the latest games is dynasty warriors 9 but i don't really recommend that one. so i recommended you play dynasty warriors 8 xtreme legends since xtreme legends is the base game + expansion.) and for strategy games i recommend play Romannce of three kingdom series ( there were many, just play the latest game ) the reason why i recommended the latest game because the point of the story in the game is always the same(since it based on history), the thing that changes are the graphic, storytelling cutscenes, dialog, map, and some of character that added into the stories. but once again the story is still the same because it's from a novel history
I have 900+ hours of gameplay logged, I absolutely love this game. Adding in mods from the community like Make Them Unique and We Are Different General adds that much more replayability and makes each new campaign start feel like a new game. Also I echo your sentiments on Rome and Roman history as well, I hope a remake of Rome / Rome 2 or a new game in Rome 3 is along the lines of the design choices CA made in TW:3K.
@@jurtra9090 It just make some basic characters unique, it also add new unique characters as well. For example, Lu Bu's daughter was just a basic sentinel in the vanilla version. But with the mod, she turns into a champion with unique armour and weapon and have a complete reskin.
Definitely try out Historic Weapon Model as well. Its by Chinese modders that aims to make the units more colourful & cool by sticking closer to available actual historical data on the Three Kingdoms and Han Dynasty.
Wu Kingdaissance is basically Make Them Unique but does more and better. More characters, more unique abilities. They added about 200+ unique heroes with unique portraits and over half of them have exclusive abilities and skill trees. They even starts to commission artists to make them original arts and 3D models now instead of just Frankensteining the vanilla portraits together to make new heroes. Don't sleep on Wu, seriously, it's probably the best mod on 3K right now and the modders are super responsive and they update frequently, fixing bugs very quickly as soon as they're reported. MTU started out great and their portraits quality are still unmatched til this day, but the modders honestly take way too long to fix major bugs and their update is at a snail's pace. It's slowly losing a lot of its initial luster. I guess one thing you can say about MTU is that it keeps it closer to vanilla than Wu, which added some changes that people might not find appealing (50% of female generic heroes and certain unique are given a new class called "concubine" which makes them squishy but have powerful support abilities instead of a fighter). Another thing is that yes, some of the older portraits that Wu added look pretty bad by today's standard but they're updating the low quality portraits with each update and they're doing a bang-up job at that
As someone what started with S1 and bought everything CA released except WH and TOB : Where Shogun2 cannot be equaled is the multiplayer Avatar which was truly amazing and deep enough to keep me addicted for a very long time. The other thing is Total war games have hundred of hours gameplay potential but mods extend this to thousands of hours, and Shogun 2 with mods like the extended map of Japan , Master of Strategy or Sekigahara campaign etc.. makes 10 years old Shogun2 very close to Three Kingdoms which is also one of my favourite TW games with S2 and Med2TW ( very ambitious product at the time of release and so well executed).
wouldn't mind having a total war: aztec or something weird like total war: German Empire where you try to unify germany while making sure napoleon the third doesn't screw you over.
i still want to see CA revisit China again, since its history is a beautiful mess.. the Spring & Autumn - Warring States period has many small states fighting to establish the 1st empire, similar to Shogun 2.. the Mongol period has many different cultures and different playstyles like Medieval 2, from the Mongol, the Song, Liao and Xi Xia to their neighbors like Korea, Japan, Tibet, Dai Viet, Champa, Majapahit,.. and then you can have the fall of the Qing, with the once-powerful Qing have to fight against its neighbors, its rebels (Taiping), the Western powers, as well as regional warlords and turncoat generals - it will be a "survive" mode (like 3K's Han start turn up to 11), instead of the traditional "snowballing" style of play..
Apollo Don’t you think that’ll be too big? Also, there’s the question of big China possibly dominating the game. Most of those states you mentioned began their rise during times when China are strong. Song is already China, and they’re big. AI China can easily mopped up some of the other nations early game and could easily outrank other factions on tax and military alone.
I've been thinking about it, I still don't really want to get into overviews and such because as I've explained before, the ones I've done are outdated due to the patches and such, but I could probably start slowly working my way through Top 5 lists of units and such. Especially if I don't consider faction specific units, I doubt there will be any crazy changes in the future, and if there are I could always re-do the relevant video. So yes, I probably will start doing Top 5s for units, but not sure when exactly, so don't start holding your breath just yet.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP i also enjoyed all the shogun 2 videos where you explained some mechanics about the game :) would appreciate videos like them for 3 Kingdoms as well. Oh and thanks for your great content :D
Shogun 2 has always been my favorite game. I just find it sad to think how Shogun 2 was literally the best game by quality, but didn't make enough money. What they did to appeal to a broader audience after that is history, but I am starting to really get bored of CAs Total War games now... nothing new, battles boring, no campaign innovation, terrible, terrible AI... I wish they'd make hardcore Total War, or at least bring back mod support so we can create our own stories.
It’s weird to me, all the really good total war games were completely in the dark. When I first got into total war, I new Rome 2, and three kingdoms All the really good ones were hidden by the newer and bad ones
Hey man you convinced me to finally pull the trigger on 3 Kingdoms, I'm like how you were, Shogun 2 is my favorite Total War game of all time and I always see myself coming back to it. Anyways I'm really excited to try out 3K because I feel like we have similar tastes. One question, do you prefer Romance or Records campaigns in 3K?
I love this channel so much because of your love for Shogun 2 and Three Kingdoms. Unlike some OTHER CHANNELS which shit on both to endlessly talk about Warhammer 2. I love Warhammer 2 but ffs the community would have you think that 3k is complete trash.
I always assumed those people were just Warhammer fans who only got in TW and now pretend to be experts of it despite only playing maybe 1 hour of Rome lol
I have 200+ hours on the game and the game still feeling amazing, I grow up watching a lot of chinese war and wuxia movie, this game scratch the itch perfectly.
what i like about shogun 2 is that the units are basically the same across all clans which make it easier to remember and most of the time it a rock paper scissor kind of attack. Which is why i haven't played warhammer 2.
I want a total war set in India. I think that could be cool. Or one just slightly after the fall of western Rome where you get to choose between Franks, ostrogoths, visigoths, lombards and former roman local governors
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP is it? To be honest, I haven't played total war for all that long and I haven't played total war attila but from I remember the huns came slightly before the fall of the Roman's, driving the goths into roman territory. I might be wrong.
@@thewingedserpent5823 I personally don't like Attila. If you like the Kingdom building aspect of TW you probably won't like Attila. It feels more like a survival game where everything is designed to make the game try and fuck you over. Also the time between turns is ridiculous. Like I remember it taking me 14 turns just to convert like a level 2 village. I'll pass on that noise.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP Even though Attila isn’t that far from 476 in the grand scheme of things, with 3K’s personalistic diplomacy, system of ranks, and political offices it could be a very different game. You could be a warlord and gain conquest legitimacy from things like “the western Roman Empire will allow my tribe to settle in Hispania if we fight the suebi.” Or have legitimacy as king of Italy by having the Eastern Emperor declare your character a patrician of the roman senate. Maybe restore the Western Empire as the Warlord state of Sygarius in Gaul or Julius Nepos in Dalmatia.
'The AI still target you more than they should sometimes, but it almost never feels ridiculous or out of nowhere'. Yeah, I was playing Three Kingdoms a couple days ago, as Cao Cao, and Yuan Shao declared war on me on turn 15. I only had Chen and Runan in my territories.
I'm sure CA programmed that, Yuan Shao and Cao Cao's faction will always go to war with each other since in history them butting heads was not only inevitable but also pretty much decided who would become to supreme power in China.
I would absolutely love a TW game in india set in about 1500 Its such a huge place with so many different cultures and armies and it literally was a battleground for thousands of years I feel like many people underestimate how fun it would be to have a shit ton of elephants against the elite rajapahut(idk how to spell it) units fighting against the mughal invasion or the timurids There´s just so much potential
That was very interesting! Sorry, I'm gonna rant a bit to do a request, but here I go: I really liked Shogun 2 before finding your videos, but while I enjoyed playing it, I never really managed to "get" it, and always cut my campaigns short because I did something wrong and felt my campaignq were in a deadend. The explanatory videos you did about the agents, the way to level up characters, build your towns, the Ashigaru wall etc. really helped me a lot, and got me my first victories in Shogun 2, both in Normal then in Hard difficulty! I know it's probably not as fun or profitable as streaming your campaigns, but I hope you do some videos about the gameplay basics for RoTK, since I'm kinda in the same situation with the game now: I have a basic idea of what I'm doing, but I feel like I'm missing on a lot, and some stuff (like the cities' building, or how to balance your army upkeep with your income) confuse me to no end, even after several hours of playing. Maybe that's just me being bad, and surely there are some other explanatory videos out there, but I always felt like yours were perfectly to the point and really educational, and I would love to have more of that!
Same for me. Not my favorite historical era, but it is my favorite Total War title. I hope they one day make a Rome 3 in the style of 3K. Since Roman history is one of my favorites, and Rome 2 kind of.... feels empty and dull compared to 3K.
i always felt like shogun 2 diplomacy is slightly more forgiving if you use one of those extra money mods so you can afford to pay money to clans to buy you time. It's like using masking tape as a band aid. It only sort of helps. It would have been way better if the AI recognized that your army reinforced theirs (or their city) and added a, idk, 50 points diplomacy the first time you do it and diminishing from there. Gotta love it when you reinforce their army, secure the win for them and they still declare war on you in 2 turns.
The difference in fractions are the play styles. Sun Jian a fast expansionist faction while Kong Rong plays tall and uses trade and commerce. Then you have the governors that work different from the warlords who work different from the Naman tribes.
The I absolutely love the diplomacy in this game its my favorite feature, it makes it feel like a true paradox/total war game. Playing all settings on legendary really is challenging and you need to be diplomatic or you will get smashed. When an alley breaks away from the coalition or an non-aggression pact it really puts you on your toes and could change everything depending where you have your armies at the time and who your at war with.
i think late ming dynasty would be much better if theyre going to do another chiense total war you got korea japan Mongol Qing dynasty and rebellion, there's also much more contact with western powers which can add a lot of stuff to the game...there so much to do in that period and it would be a lot easier for a historical accurate game compare to 3k
i would love to play three kingdoms, the only problems my computer already slogs at shogun 2 and have to play with the lowest settings to even play, which leads to me not wanting three kingdoms, I expect to not be able to play the game and won't even be able to enjoy the graphics of the game. granted my laptop is very bad and am not expecting an upgrade anytime soon as this laptop is meant to be my school laptop, but having to buy a beefy computer without even buying the game just puts me off
I played the two games in opposite order (mostly because I'm a huge fan of Chinese history) and have to say that I'm loving the lack of cheese (e.g., looping) and anachronisms (e.g., counter-weight trebuchets) in Shogun 2.
4:55 i really agree, TW strategic system(you know, "word map mode") using armies with concentrated units and tactical system based on quadrangle formations doesn't fit WW 1 Front lines, hiding behind covers by individuals and trench warfare on west front, ok even east front with more "moving war" still on tactical level rely on soldiers hiding behind cover and finding good shooting position.Because that reasons WW 2 TW game is even worse idea. Victorian era... mayyyyybe could work (Technically Shogun 2 FoS is in Victoria era but i of course full TW game should have bigger scale and longer period so that may cause some problems with integrating historical reality to mechanics)
Scroll down the comments and you’ll see it was mentioned plenty. Doesn’t bother me, for a time 3K was my favourite Total War, I think that was pretty clear from how much I was playing it, but after a while the simple battles started becoming a bit too boring for me, so I switched back to Shogun 2 being my favourite. That’s what makes us human, being able to change opinions as time progresses. People are free to believe what they want, I could’ve made this video about Shogun 2 and be paid the same amount, but Shogun 2 wasn’t my favourite game at the time so I didn’t. Simple as that.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP I very much doubt that you could have made a Shogun 2 video and still get sponsored. You're welcome to have your own opinions about the games and anything you fancy, of course, but just look at the views it brought. Ask "who sponsored the video?" Your videos about Shogun 2 are a must every time I re-visit the game. With everything said, thank you for putting so much effort into this channel. PS: Katana cavalry kicks ass and I shall carry this transgression to the grave.
@@yourpapersplease5000 at the time I discussed with James at CA which game I would cover and Shogun 2 was fine as well, in fact, someone else ended up making one for Shogun 2. They wanted at least 1 video for each TW game. There were quite a few of us who were sponsored. But as I said, think what you think, I know what I know.
Needs an update video i think given it's no longer the case even with the updates to battles fixing issues even I had with it. Come on CA sponsor another one maybe Troyhammer is the new favourite or the rome board game lol
First Total War game that I played was Shogun Total War, not Shogun 2, Shogun. I love strategy games, but the thing that drew me to the first game back then was, CA wanted to created a strategy game based on the principle of the Sun Tzu Art of War, in which was huge for me back then, cause the terrain, morale and other factors finally played a factor. That said, the period I would see the most, is the Chinese Spring and Autumn period in which Sun Tzu was in.
I'm very interested in Japanese history and it's people, but I'm also not a weeb. Lots of people nowadays love to find buzzwords that make them feel smart and then use them without actually bothering to learn what they mean because learning is hard, a weeb is someone who believes they are Japanese, live like a Japanese person, and think everything that isn't Japanese is bad. I don't apply to any of the 3, you can watch anime and like Japanese history and not be a weeb.
Except it’s not as I’ve explained in reply to many other comments, but since I can’t be bothered to properly reply anymore I will just copy paste a previous response. “Take my word for it or don't, it doesn't make it any less true. I've been saying Three Kingdoms is my favourite game whenever someone asked me for the past year, I just hadn't made a video about it until now. If and when I re-do my top 5 Total War games video Three Kingdoms will be at the top as well, even though it won't be a sponsored video.” And “There were about a dozen of us who were sponsored and we all got to choose our own favourite game. PartyElite chose Medieval 2 for example, MonstersAbound chose Empire, etc. So it has nothing to do with promoting the newest installment.”
What do you guys think about a 1500-1600 era Total War, about Spanish/Portuguese conquistadores againts the Mesoamerican natives. The Dutch colonies and navy. Land battles would be halberds and pikes, muskets, heavy cav and light cav, cannons. The Catholic church could be a mechanic of the world map also, with the inquisition. I would love to see the naval battles with cannons again.
This is very good content creative assembly . . . . I now feel like buying both shugun 2 fall of the samurai and 3 kingdom for my self and a group of friends!
I like to think of 3K as being a reflection of Civ 5; good at launch, but amazing by the time all the DLC and FLC have been released. My favorite TW game by far.
One flaw is that faction far South like Shi Xie and Liu Zhang are very passive. Sometimes they grow into 1 of the 3 kingdoms just because they are too far away and no one ever touch them. As a result they are very weak but so far away, thus running towards them just to win some easy battles is so annoying. Hope they can change it in the next dlc, with more action in thr Southern side if the map
You know the other total war games left me kind of cold after shogun 2. Rome needs DEI to get 60 hours out of me. But between shogun 2 and FOTS I have 600+ I bought Three Kingdoms and was so confused by it in one custom battle that I kind of just dropped it. Having seen you videos I think I’m going to give it a go after I finish my current FOTS campaign. And maybe dream of a new Shogun game that lets me have proper Siege armies. Even my mangonels which can get +50 accuracy from two master fletchers and two hunting lodges are mostly only good for knocking out towers and gates.
Hey! I was wondering if you could make unit analysis and ranking videos for three kingdoms, like for shogun 2. I have been searching for the “best” units, but it seems there are no such lists available!
My first TW game was Shogun 1 and it blew my mind at the time, but Medieval 2 Total War is still my favorite and I think the historical events that come up during it and when things where invented (and fun speeches without a terrible long campaign and very unique faction armies) is still unmatched all these years later. That said Rome 1 is the one I had the most fun playing outright all put together. But in the end misses some of the unique interactions that Medieval 2 has that makes for delightful replay value. Both are very close. I'm not sure 3 Kingdoms will touch any of that, if I want to have fun playing in that era I'll just too often be reminded I could be playing Dynasty Warriors instead. It'll be hard for me to separate that legendary series from this era and think of it only in a very slow Total War game way.
Did I say that was a plus? Whenever people ask me my preferences between the games I always mention that battles in Shogun 2 are superior exactly because of unbalanced things like that.
In your recent videos you said Shogun 2 is still vying for the position. Were there reasons your disposition towards 3k changed?(seemingly) since this video?
Hmm, kiiiind of. Everything I said in this video is still very much true, but since I did my coop/h2h campaign with SeriousTrivia I've started to dislike the battles in 3K even further than I already did. At least in comparison to Shogun 2 which has such a perfect balance between units. I still think the 3K campaign is 100x better than the Shogun 2 campaign, but maybe the Shogun 2 battles are 101x better than the 3K battles, if you get what I mean. It's a super close call between the 2, if I could get the 3K campaign with Shogun 2 battles in a single game I think we'll have reached the unbeatable peak.
You might be the first Total War RUclipsr that has liked 3k that I know of, for all the reviews that I saw I thought it was just bad, although, being a great fan of Shogun myself, that's why I've been a fan of you for a while, I guess I can give it a try. If only they give it a free weekend in Steam to try for myself... For me Warhammer, Medieval 2 and Shogun 2 are the best ones. Big biased on Warhammer because I've painted since I was 12. Medieval I like the game as hoe it works, the era, and some mods like lord of the rings and elder scrolls.
There's definitely a lot more RUclipsrs that like 3K, I'd have a look at Serious Trivia and MonstersAbound for starters, and loads of other RUclipsrs have covered quite a bit of it as well, Lionheart as an easy example.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP I'll check them out, my main total war youtubers are milkandcookies, legend and yourself. Legend for example was very critic with 3k. I'm actually interested on it's history tho, I know the romance from the dynasty warriors games xD
Well I did receive Three Kingdoms as a gift from a friend, but I was wondering if it was any good before trying to play it. Seeing this video makes me want to try it now.
If Creative Assembly make another Shogun TW game with Three Kingdoms mechanic, I want to play the daimyos from the Sengoku era just like in three kingdoms. Also if we're talking about China they should also make about the warring states era of China either by new game or as a DLC like Genpei War(rise of the samurai) in Shogun 2
Fall of the Samurai must have the strongest variety of different units of any historical title. I think it's the perfect setting, but like you said, the AI is not trying to win, not even to survive, they just try to annoy the player. I wish CA released an update with updated AI and diplomacy and less immersion breaking AI bias and cheats.
Yeah absolutely, despite the fact that I had mentioned on numerous occasions in streams that you can find on my channel that 3K had become my favourite Total War game, which has reverted back again by the way after my co-op campaign with SeriousTrivia. I’m very vocal about these things, I don’t hide anything and I don’t give false opinions for money, as much as people want to believe that.
like others are saying i really want a third shogun game i really loved the whole vibe of the second game and the time period, but after nearly 10 years it just feels really archaic and old
Three Kingdoms is my favorite as well. There's something really special about it. Still love Medieval, Rome and Shogun but Three Kingdoms is a masterpiece.
The timeline slider is telling us there is at least one more DLC for 3K. Probably the beginning when Shu-Wei-Wu are formed. Also, the Warring States and Qin unification of China deserves a game of itself. There are many interesting historical period in Asia that could turn into another Shogun 2 and 3K.
I love three kingdom. One of the favorite total war. But the one thing I just recently realized (and it kinda ruined my experience with it) is that the battlefield in three kingdoms is so boring. Most of the time, it's just a plain field, with some tiny, tiny hill. Most of the battle map are accessible. I just replayed Shogun 2 after a year and gosh, I loved its battlefield (maybe it's because of mods, idk, I never play shogun 2 without heavy mods) with a large hill structure, where you can claim and defend. so many inaccessible location (like cliffs) that you can turn into choke points or have fun with strategy/flanking. With three kingdom, the battle maps, albeit really large, seem really lacking. With the vertical mountains/terrace in the south, why can't they incorporate those into the map itself, that would make an exciting battle with strange tactic and flanking.
I stumbled upon this channel by sheer chance, thanks to my recommended videos. I've been binging on your campaigns, and it's been a joy to watch while working at home. I was huge into Shogun 2 (and still am). Watching this video convinced me that I should grab Three Kingdoms and give it a go. Congrats, you got Creative Assembly another sale, and you got another subscriber!
How epic a Shogun 3 total war with, 3 Kingdoms diplomacy and commander system would be. Only thing i would not like to see is the general hero system/ the one man army. that would be epic
A HUGE thank you to Creative Assembly for sponsoring this video, if ever there was a sponsorship I was 100% behind, this would be it.
If you're interested in playing Three Kingdoms yourself, check out this link - store.steampowered.com/app/779340/Total_War_THREE_KINGDOMS/? (Currently 25% off during the Steam Summer Sale)
If I only had a pc lol
Bout time ya bois make a Shogun 3 huh :y
I wish they would make a basically 3rd Shogun game with the new features (basically a spin off)
Add custom clans in there sprinkle it for much much more replayability
With the choice to make custom units
Shogun 3
I don't know how Shogun 3 would be a spin off but I agree

@Obi-Wan Kenobi Hello there
OUR RUclipsR IS RUNNING FROM THE BEST TOTAL WAR GAME! A SHAMEFUL DISPLAY!
For a while i've always understood the line as "SHAME FOR THIS PIG!"
Warhammer also addres since they become weaker and more sucetible to your diplomatic pressure.
I just really love the sound of arrows connecting with bodies in Shogun 2. I'm surprised that wasn't one of your main points to be honest.
Why would a positive by one of my points on a video where I’m only pointing out the negatives?
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP I mean that's a fair point but you could just get a little montage in there and be like "even without this 3k still wins out" and make sure CA include that beautiful soundbyte if/when they create Shogun 3.
@@freddyz3359 shogun 3 2024 🙏
I feel like naval battles had the potential to be great. I enjoyed Empire Total War's time period & the map was global, I would have to play several naval battles just to stay competitive. Cannon naval battles are easier to control and more enjoyable: bracketing ships, T'ing Ships, sailing with the wind. Swinging broadsides back and forth, etc... I think naval battles need more work in general though. If land battles are sped up already, why not naval ship speed?
Here's some tips I found on Shogun II's naval battles though if anyone's interested, an important caveat is increased reload speed and accuracy on Legendary difficulty though:
I like naval battle in ETW/NTW too, but i dont play naval battle on shogun until i have siege tower bune 🤣
I played lot of naval wars on Assasins Creed 5 ( AS Rogue). Compared to that , naval war on all other game seem bit low-tier.
Here are some of my ovservation on Fots Naval though:
I. CAMPAIGN MODE
Also hard to
4. when attacking, use manual broadside and keep the furthest range 750 ranger ships could have.
II. Multiplayer
Shogun 3 on the other hand. Now that'll be a game changer.
S3 with the positives from 3K *licks fingers*
I dont think they could do it justice, the beauty of S2 lies in the unit collisions and 1 on1 fights of the soldiers paired with a high leathality that rewards good micromanagement so the battles dont become boring
not sure if it is there engine but no TW game after S2 pulled it off, they are all just action figures swinging in each others directions with HP Pools slowly depleting
Medieval III
You were the chosen one it was said that you would destroy the other total war games not join them bring balance to shogun2 not leave it in darkness !
Cao Cao or Oda Nobunaga?
Quite a difficult question for me
Cao Cao definitely
Nobunaga was a military genius but Cao Cao was a genius at everything
Why not both??? But seriously, it's pretty tough decide...
After playing, I came to youtube and watched a lot of videos about China's history hahaha
Just bought the World Bretayed DLC during the summer sale.
well if it about three kingdom period.then i recommend you play hack and slash games called dynasty warriors series ( the latest games is dynasty warriors 9 but i don't really recommend that one. so i recommended you play dynasty warriors 8 xtreme legends since xtreme legends is the base game + expansion.) and for strategy games i recommend play Romannce of three kingdom series ( there were many, just play the latest game )
the reason why i recommended the latest game because the point of the story in the game is always the same(since it based on history), the thing that changes are the graphic, storytelling cutscenes, dialog, map, and some of character that added into the stories. but once again the story is still the same because it's from a novel history
If you like the three kingdoms era, you should watch the tv show from 2010 in RUclips. Amazing actors, really good show
South american history is a mystery to most europeans
U SHOULD PLAY WARRIORS OROCHI (dynasty warriors n samurai warriors spin-off)
If you know China's history, especially 3 kingdoms, you will also know east Asia's history basically. That's why Japan can make a 3 kingdoms game.
Try wu kindaissance and have an other 900 hours of gameplay
Rome 1 with TW3K diplomancy wound be sick honestly
TWTK has the best combat in my opinion.
"I don't have a katana, but I do have a gladius with a scabbard because I'm more interested in Roman history"
You my friend are incredibilis
The mods of 3K are great as well. "Make Them Unique" mod is my favorite.
Same. I can't and won't play without that mod. :)
@@hiirvegil how that mod work?
A European theater Total War set in the Fall of The Samurai time period would be awesome.
Or as dlc the 30 years war in the name of Religion
i still want to see CA revisit China again, since its history is a beautiful mess.. the Spring & Autumn - Warring States period has many small states fighting to establish the 1st empire, similar to Shogun 2.. the Mongol period has many different cultures and different playstyles like Medieval 2, from the Mongol, the Song, Liao and Xi Xia to their neighbors like Korea, Japan, Tibet, Dai Viet, Champa, Majapahit,.. and then you can have the fall of the Qing, with the once-powerful Qing have to fight against its neighbors, its rebels (Taiping), the Western powers, as well as regional warlords and turncoat generals - it will be a "survive" mode (like 3K's Han start turn up to 11), instead of the traditional "snowballing" style of play..
They can be more creative and make it Total War East Asia. Probably with the Mongols, Song, Khmer, Majapahit and Kamakura as main players.
Damn, the editing of that thumbnail tho
Took almost as much time as the video itself! 😝
You not being a weeb is my biggest disappointment. Dislike and subscribed.
Are you gonna start doing those top 10 lists on units or factions.
I had seen this as a Three Kingdoms promotion on Steam.
Money doesn't smell.
“enough of shogun 2, this is about 3 kingdoms.”
3 seconds later
“shogun 2-“
Hahaha, yeah, but I had to set it up that way for people to understand.
I wish they'd make hardcore Total War, or at least bring back mod support so we can create our own stories.
does 3 kingdoms have dying soldiers rolling around after a battle? Every total war needs this.
It’s weird to me, all the really good total war games were completely in the dark. When I first got into total war, I new Rome 2, and three kingdoms
All the really good ones were hidden by the newer and bad ones
Hey man you convinced me to finally pull the trigger on 3 Kingdoms, I'm like how you were, Shogun 2 is my favorite Total War game of all time and I always see myself coming back to it. Anyways I'm really excited to try out 3K because I feel like we have similar tastes. One question, do you prefer Romance or Records campaigns in 3K?
Romance, while I didn’t like the single entity generals much in WH, I don’t really mind them in 3K.
The Total War reddit is basically a Warhammer reddit now and it annoys me so much, and I like Warhammer games as well
tbh warhammer and three kingdoms are pretty bad, but how can anyone shit on shogun2
@@daborinkid7279 lack of unit diversity mostly. other than that it's a solid game, at least to me
Shogun 3 will bring him back to the light.
I have 200+ hours on the game and the game still feeling amazing, I grow up watching a lot of chinese war and wuxia movie, this game scratch the itch perfectly.
I have 600+ right now, which is only a third of what I have in S2, but S2 has been out for almost a decade and 3K for just over a year.
what i like about shogun 2 is that the units are basically the same across all clans which make it easier to remember and most of the time it a rock paper scissor kind of attack. Which is why i haven't played warhammer 2.
First time someone complains about unit diversity but its fair.
I want a total war set in India. I think that could be cool. Or one just slightly after the fall of western Rome where you get to choose between Franks, ostrogoths, visigoths, lombards and former roman local governors
Isn’t that just Total War: Attila?
Its sad MSD has to sell his soul 😂😂 we all know he is a Shogun.
I find no stream on 3K since the video was posted.

Favorite donkey total war game, Asia War :D
I would absolutely love a TW game in india set in about 1500
Its such a huge place with so many different cultures and armies and it literally was a battleground for thousands of years
I feel like many people underestimate how fun it would be to have a shit ton of elephants against the elite rajapahut(idk how to spell it) units fighting against the mughal invasion or the timurids
There´s just so much potential
So how hard have you changed your mind?
Congrats on the sponsor mate.
You should start making "Top 5" type videos for 3 Kingdoms!!
Waiting for the day of Shogun 3
The different factions were actually a weak point to me. They all kinda feel the same with only two unique units each.
Basically the same as Shogun 2 then. This ain't Warhammer where you have a bunch of different races.
@@SolProxy The han disagree with you.
The difference in fractions are the play styles. Sun Jian a fast expansionist faction while Kong Rong plays tall and uses trade and commerce. Then you have the governors that work different from the warlords who work different from the Naman tribes.
Shogun 2 best total war game ,I've played them all, shogun 2 has the least glitchy problems
Meanwhile, I'm still holding a torch for Medieval 2, and wistfully dreaming about a third in the Medieval line.
i think late ming dynasty would be much better if theyre going to do another chiense total war you got korea japan Mongol Qing dynasty and rebellion, there's also much more contact with western powers which can add a lot of stuff to the game...there so much to do in that period and it would be a lot easier for a historical accurate game compare to 3k
Oh no.... Now Im gonna wear my Yukata when watching Donkey stream and annoy him in chat all day
My fav is modded empire. My fav time in history. Wish they would make another one
i would love to play three kingdoms, the only problems my computer already slogs at shogun 2 and have to play with the lowest settings to even play, which leads to me not wanting three kingdoms, I expect to not be able to play the game and won't even be able to enjoy the graphics of the game. granted my laptop is very bad and am not expecting an upgrade anytime soon as this laptop is meant to be my school laptop, but having to buy a beefy computer without even buying the game just puts me off
You don't need a beefy computer, you can buy a laptop that runs decently 3k for like 500
I played the two games in opposite order (mostly because I'm a huge fan of Chinese history) and have to say that I'm loving the lack of cheese (e.g., looping) and anachronisms (e.g., counter-weight trebuchets) in Shogun 2.
I'm used to playing Koei's Sangokushi games and just bought TWTK so we will see how my first playthrough goes.
it was the opposite for me, I am Chinese but I just cant stick with 3 Kingdom, barely have 20hrs in it, WH2 ftw !
I think i could love 3k if it didn’t make my pc sound like it was about to go into orbit
For me every Total War game is in some way unique and I like all games from that series :)
OUR FAVORITE SHOGUN 2 YT IS RUNNING FORM THE BATTLFIELD, SHAFUL DISPLAY
Man went for the bag and nobody mentions it
Scroll down the comments and you’ll see it was mentioned plenty.
Ask "who sponsored the video?"
Your videos about Shogun 2 are a must every time I re-visit the game.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP If you can find a Shogun 2 video sponsored by CA, then that changes things.
Battle AI: S2 - WH - R2 - 3K. (3k cav just so OP)
Campaign AI: S2 - WH/3K - R2
Battle Graphics: WH - 3k - S2 - R2
Campaign Map Graphics: 3K/WH - R2 - S2
Sword Play/Clash: S2 - 3K - WH - R2
Diplomacy: 3K - S2 - WH - R2
Summary:
S2: 4+4+2+1+4+2 = 17 - AI
WH: 3+2.5+4+3.5 +2+2 = 17 - well rounded
3K: 1+2.5+3+3.5+3+4. = 17 - diplomacy/ grphcs
R2: 2+1+1+2+1+1. = 8 - no
Needs an update video i think given it's no longer the case even with the updates to battles fixing issues even I had with it.
I was jokingly thinking to myself "because CA payed you to say that" in response to the title as I was scrolling. Didn't expect it to actually be true
If and when I re-do my top 5 Total War games video Three Kingdoms will be at the top as well, even though it won't be a sponsored video.”
And “There were about a dozen of us who were sponsored and we all got to choose our own favourite game. PartyElite chose Medieval 2 for example, MonstersAbound chose Empire, etc. So it has nothing to do with promoting the newest installment.”
Great idea to make this video about it!
Now no one will ask you anymore which is your favourite TW game is. And you also got sponsored! Win-Win.
Exactly! Whenever anyone asks from now on I can just direct them to this video.
oh god those arrow trails kill me
What do you guys think about a 1500-1600 era Total War, about Spanish/Portuguese conquistadores againts the Mesoamerican natives. The Dutch colonies and navy. Land battles would be halberds and pikes, muskets, heavy cav and light cav, cannons. The Catholic church could be a mechanic of the world map also, with the inquisition. I would love to see the naval battles with cannons again.
Is it me or does three kingdom seems to have a lot of clutter on screen when you are playing it?
This is very good content creative assembly

I now feel like buying both shugun 2 fall of the samurai and 3 kingdom for my self and a group of friends!
Its an epic when developer release Shogun 3 i think.
Hope they can change it in the next dlc, with more action in thr Southern side if the map
in the 190 start date, 90% Wu will become a kingdom, Liu Bei get crushed super early, Yuan Shao have 7+ vassals, so predictable.
The retinue system and romance mode is like peas and carrots.
I personally don’t think that useless infantry and OP cavalry is a plus, though obviously that’s personal preference.
Did I say that was a plus? Whenever people ask me my preferences between the games I always mention that battles in Shogun 2 are superior exactly because of unbalanced things like that.
My only gripe about 3k is that they rebound the select all shortcuts to F keys and I can't bind them back to the old keys.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP I'm curious, what do you dislike about 3k battles? It seems to be a quite common sentiment among TW fans.
I'm holding out for Medieval 3. if it turns out to be anything like any title since Rome 2, then I will probably sell my gaming PC.
IMO, CA can make Shogun 3 with T3K style because Sengoku era was full of really interesting individuals.
wait this channel is still alive? damn
Why wouldn’t it be?
You do have a fair point
How does this compare to KOEI's Romance of the Three Kindoms 14? I will eventually get both and see for myself but I'm on a budget ATM. Thanks.
Honestly not sure as I've never played it, but I think while they have some similarities, they are very different games.
Holly shit! Is that a motherfucking Albion swords Gladius?!?! That's sick!!
Yes it is, my pride! Glad someone recognized it.
Gladi
Fall of the Samurai must have the strongest variety of different units of any historical title. I think it's the perfect setting, but like you said, the AI is not trying to win, not even to survive, they just try to annoy the player. I wish CA released an update with updated AI and diplomacy and less immersion breaking AI bias and cheats.
So creative assembly paid you to change your opinion
Yeah absolutely, despite the fact that I had mentioned on numerous occasions in streams that you can find on my channel that 3K had become my favourite Total War game, which has reverted back again by the way after my co-op campaign with SeriousTrivia. I’m very vocal about these things, I don’t hide anything and I don’t give false opinions for money, as much as people want to believe that.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP respect
like others are saying i really want a third shogun game i really loved the whole vibe of the second game and the time period, but after nearly 10 years it just feels really archaic and old
After WH2 and SFO, other TWs Are JUST Bare Bones in combat. But on the map, DEI And modded Attila still rules.
There’s many more DLC’s to come.
Total War: Babylon would be sick, or Mesopotamia
Also, Turkish invasion on the Balkan region could be a nice stand alone DLC.
Congrats on the sponsor
