So, I went to Shorecrest High School and was at this show. (I'm somewhere in the front, to the right.) This occurred in either 1996 or 1997. I can't remember. Probably 1996. Here's a little context for Weezer fans: Shorecrest is located in the suburb that borders Seattle's north end. Not much to say about the school, other than that Rainn Wilson went there in the 1980s. The show was totally unexpected. Ladd Martin called in to The End, a local grunge station, and won this competition the night before. Then Weezer just showed up the next day. Surprising that the school even let this happen. Weezer was touring on Pinkerton, I believe, and had played a show the night before. Ladd got to hang out with band back stage, etc., etc. He was catapulted into high school stardom by this whole event. It's surprising they didn't ask him to join the band. Other factoids: Rivers was up all night before the show, per Ladd and a Weezer movie I saw, and he looked totally haggard. Also, Dave Grohl and Pat Smear were randomly at this cafeteria gig. I can recall turning around and seeing them at the back. They lived in Seattle at the time. Anyway, it was way rad. I love seeing all the 90s-style untucked, oversized button-down shirts. Them's was the days. =W=
I can't believe Dave grohl and pat smear saw this gig. I love it when artists see other artists performances. As for weezer,my favorite band, and this performance is one of their best, and it's in a high school auditorium
i think matt's silly background vocals are what makes the first two albums so special. there something so naive about them but yet so relatable, so personable, so personal, and just awesome. Weezer, forever.
Agreed. Everything worked so perfectly at the beginning but Matt was the special puzzle piece. They’ve had the high points since he left but never reached the same water mark his wave left.
How awesome would it be to see Weezer (let alone, at your highschool), and they say.. "This next song is off our new album, Pinkerton." Man, what a truly amazing experience that must've been. I was in highschool when Weezer came out and I would have been the same age as these kids.. so I'm feeling it.
I was a freshman standing in the back, most of my friends had no idea until morning announcements, we just walked in and saw a great show. Was my first day of Weezer Fandom.
Clearer understanding of lyrics in this acoustic set lit the light on how many sex references there are in early Weezer stuff. Glad the victory didn't go to some Southern school, bible-belters would have choked on it.
Now I wish I was in Grade 12 in the mid-late 90's instead of 2011. Ladd Martin has a dinner table story to tell for the rest of his life. What a legend.

Matt was a perfect counterpoint to Rivers, as far as personalities go. I think his importance in the band goes really under-appreciated.
Not at all, but they do add a little something special. It in no way defines their best albums though.
