I’m pretty sure Rivers debunked that he had asthma a long time ago. His dad called him Weezer because of the Little Rascals character, because he was “the cool one.” And the biggest influence on Rivers when he first started writing was The Velvet Underground. Nirvana’s “Sliver” inspired the nerdy nostalgia of those songs, and Sebadoh inspired the earnestness.
Yooo Sebadoh mentioned. Yeah both Sebadoh and Lou Barlow's other band Dinosaur Jr were definitely big influences on early Weezer yet hardly anyone seems to mention this. Weezer took both Dino Jr and Sebadoh on the Weezer Cruise and Dino Jr will be an opening act on the Blue Album tour this year, so if anything that should be a pretty big hint that Rivers has been a fan of them since the Blue era.
I met these guys. Was in a recording studio in Kennsington Market, recording a piece on lap steel. The owner of the studio had found me busking and invited me to come down and record. In return i made him a logo for his biz. So it was the hottest most humid day, the air conditioning wasn’t working so there was sweat running off of my face and dripping down onto the guitar, like a river. So these two guys from Weezer walked in for some reason and we had a short chat. They said they liked my sound. I said it would sound better if i was not underwater or something to that effect. I had no idea who they even were at the time and didn’t know for years who weezer where. They were called Weezer at the time; they had a rehearsal space exactly in the building on Queen’s Quay where my ex girlfriend, Alice, was putting on fashion shows and such and there were big parties there. That part, about Alice is rather a long strange story. She was too beautiuful for her own good and literally every guy wanted her. Anyway…carry on, thx for making this video :)
Sounds like bs, lol. You've never had a girlfriend, unless you want me to count that cpr practice dummy or your imaginary lady friend from Prague or whatever.
Great video Marc. Honestly, I was expecting for a video like this one for awhile. You did a very good research and as always I learned a lot about Weezer.
I had no idea it was a Sloan show that gave Weezer a bit of A&R profile. My first and only Weezer show featured Sloan as the opener. They definitely complement each other.
Just watching this for the first time. I really adore the use of Caravan at 7:26. I was watching whiplash only a few days ago so the music instantly caught me. Love it! And not to forget that the video is fantastic.
I remember Zoom, lol. They would be flying around Sunset Strip on their skates, peppering the cars and poles with their flyers, and they wore these Dana Strum hairstyle wigs, and just towels on. The band wasnt bad, yet not great, Rivers was like a cross between KK Downing (his hero)of Judas Priest and Paul Gilbert on guitar. Great times in 89.
That is epic! I actually met Rivers first working at Tower Sunset and he asked me to be the DJ for Zoom, which wasn't really my cup of tea, but I loved the whole Connecticut contingent. That was the death knell of the hair metal strip scene. Did you ever see the Dum Dums? Pat and I were in the band for a few No Bozo jams.
I feel like this was released on April 1st, because for those that don't know the history, all of this sounds so ridiculous that it honestly sounds made up.

Pretty good, I'll give it an 8 overall and a 7 for accuracy. I know it's confusing that there are two Pats involved, especially since we share the same birthday, like the exact same day! Though I was born in Ithaca New York and Pat was born just outside of Buffalo, where we met in 1990 and drove to LA not too long after to stay with Soda Gardocki (who later became the guitarist for Wax) and form a band called Bush that never played any shows. Of course only Rivers and I know why he broke up Zoom and then eventually formed Fuzz with Pat Wilson, then Pat Wilson and I formed 60 Wrong Sausages which was just Pat and me at first, then we brought in Cropper. Rivers and I drove to Burbank twice a week to study karate (the subject of the 60 Wrong Sausages song Been Gi) while Rivers was going to Santa Monica Community College and basically swearing off music, but one night I convinced him to join us in SWS and that kinda put the energy that would become Weezer in motion. Of course there is more to it than that, a whole books worth that is slowly getting written. Fun video, thanks.
Haha! I remember the day he cut it off, just cut off the ponytail. For being such a methodical and measured human it was a shocking move, but definitely the right one.
Because I’m one of those people who didn’t come to this channel as a Weezer fan, I spent half the video thinking this must be an April Fools joke. This is next level anti-prank writing. As a buddhist, these buddhist comunes are very different from normal buddhist temple communities. Like we have a lot of different sects. My sect allows eating meat, but others are vegetarians. Some are peaceful and all about do no harm, and others are crazy martial artists that beat children until they get a type of kick perfect. But still, these things are crazy different.
Just got back from their greenville concert, crazy how I can love a band for an album released 10 years before I was born and see it live as a 20 year old. They're no longer weezer, they're geezer(s).
Imagine if Weezer covered the entire 1965 Beach Boys album, "Summer Days (and summer nights!!)" at this point in their career. Every song sounds like it could be a weezer song with just some added distortion and River's voice. It would be a cool and unexpected follow up to the SZNZ eps.
