Talk about durability! I bought my Z Ultra last April 2014 and now it's 2017 it still up and working and it has been my favorite phone ever since! I have iPhone 6 now and this but I feel most satisfied and happy when using my Z Ultra! Loved it and will never trade it to any phone even it ages, as long as it will remain working!
I have this phone for a year now, it still serves me well, after upgrading it to Lollipop 5, the battery drained a bit faster but still managing, love the fact that it still in my male handbag most of the time (yes, I'm a teacher, so many things in my man bag, it includes markers, power bank, pen-drives etc) As a teacher, I would use Z Ultra to teach, the net is fast and reliable, the resolution of the notes and pictures are wonderful and bright too, I can get wireless printer services, the audio jack is wonderful, so, I managed to use this device to its fully potential, using ZU really made my life simpler due to apps that I used were handled nicely (graphic wise, prosecuting apps) I know the cameras are not that great like z2, z3 or any other supplier, but, it took good pictures too. Definitely not a phone for those night crawlers, but why take pictures in the dark (so amateur, buy a dslr then). YES, the phone is bulky but it does not easily flushed into the toilet you see. I accidentally dropped to the shit hole but you know what, it got stuck (pardon my English) and does not get in. Imagine if you have 4-5 inch hp, I guess you will buy a new one now. Now is 2015, I think this phone can last around good 3 more years. I am sure that by then, better snapdragons will be introduced and would gladly change, but not for now. I love my ZU, please pardon my English, thank you.
Just goes to show how significant software is towards the overall user experience. More often than not, specs no longer determine how "good" a mobile device is, the software does.
MrPivotmaster98 that's what I'm saying. I too would buy a Nexus 5 that has better hardware then any Samsung phone. And when I say hardware I mean the build of the device.
I agree with you Taylor. I switched to the G2 and right now, I can't help but to think of the Z Ultra as my one true love that I'm missing so much... if only she had an LED flash
Having the Z Ultra for just over a year, I am still amazed with it. When I was reading the reviews before purchase, I was made aware of the camera being deficient. When I am paying attention, the pics I've taken display brilliantly, and I have to remind myself that it is a phone, so I've never been displeased with this feature. Perhaps it has a lower mega-pixel count, but I believe that the lenses Sony uses are high quality which perhaps make up for the MP - my guess. It is technical elegance.
Best $340 i ever spent! Unlocked Euro version C6833 running Kit Kat 4.4.4 ;) 2 months in and never had one problem you had Taylor! Runs Smooth as Eggs ;)
I managed to get it off of expansy too, the Xperia Z Ultra is a great device and I've came across people who were astonished at how big it was, especially when I went over to my friend's house and sat it right next to his Galaxy Note 3.
Taylor, great you gave this phone a second chance, I had it since it came out and I'm still loving it. It would be very interesting if you do a video showing how to use it in your car for multimedia and stuff since the news of Toyota and the Nexus 7. Keep the good work.
Hi Taylor, just wondering, have you missed not having a LED flash on the camera of the Z Ultra at all at any point? Low light camera performance? Thanks
I respect this so much. Buying an older, but still good phone at a good price. Not like the majority of people who have been tricked by companies into thinking that they always need to buy the latest phones at top dollar.
As a Lumia 1020 and Galaxy S5 owner, I'm still almost tempted to get a Xperia Z Ultra to replace my Nexus 7 2013. Sony's support for the PS3 controller out of the box and MHL video output can make the Z Ultra a great gaming box. Plus you can make calls / texts on it as opposed to the Nexus 7 and its waterproof. And its hard to bring the Nexus 7 without a bag, the Z Ultra I guess can still be pocketed.
We have this device in our household and I must say, it's a pleasure to use. But it's the Sony version. I haven't seen many issues with it. It's huge! I'm using the Z2, but the Z Ultra is a VERY good device. Awesome screen, fast processor, slim design, waterproof...
As a Z Ultra user since day 1 release, I personally think that this phone is the only phone that is better off not running stock Android. Reason to that is because GPe on this phone you get the phone version instead of the tablet version. Which makes it just a huge Nexus 5, wasting all the screen estate.
Daumex You don't buy a product and say, oh let me tweak this and customize that first before I use it. You put a product out there, people buy it, open it and it should already be comfortable to use. Unless people want more out of it then they mess with it.
I still love my Z Ultra. I can live with poor speakers cuz I usually use BT speakers to fit those needs. Where this phablet fails is 1) the camera, lack of flash and poor pic quality hurt 2) no true multitasking outside the poor small apps. The phone is big enough to allow me to check email while having a video running. The lack of split screen multitasking was a HUGE missed opportunity. I was hoping for a Z Ultra 2 this year but it looks unlikely.
Would have been a LOT better if you tackled any major/minor changes since the first time you reviewed it... Like what is the software now, did sony fixed the sensitivity issue? etc... Just like a re review or lookback of some sort but w/ more info
Watching this from my Note 3... There's a certain allure to having such a large yet portable device at your disposal. Not sure about actual phone calls but I guess you could always Bluetooth. The Note series definitely has a nice balance considering it is meant for multimedia consumption, business and yet you can still make phone calls quite comfortably. Sony has the build though. Perhaps the Note 4 will change all of that...
Hey Taylor, I would be interested in your views on this phone now after all the releases this week. Are you still going to keep it for a while? Anything that makes you want to drop more $ for some newer tech?
I bought this phone near release date and although I was appalled and disturbed by the humongous size (hugely due to the top and bottom bezel), it was one of the best performing phone I have ever had. Seriously, the size was the only thing bothering me (and the lack of Dual Sim version afterwards, but this was forgivable). The specs as told by the video is a beast, and I always liked big phones since I can have less mistakes typing and also consuming anything on that big, 1080p screen is such a pleasant experience. The software of Sony, for some reason, I really like it. I might even called it less bloaty than some other OSes like Touchwiz and LG's. It is due to the fact that it ran so smoothly in the Z Ultra. If I was carrying a small bag around, carrying this phone would remove the hassle. For the sensitivity of the touchscreen, it is largely due to the waterproof screen, so I was not that bothered by it. All in all, great phone, just needed a little touching up.
I agree 100%. I also talked myself out of buying it. Then I got it from the same place. Its my secondary phone, but honestly I think I like it more than my note 3. Its just missing a few things that would make it a great phone. I'm in love with this thing though brother.
Got mine on release day in UK. Lots of os updates, always a bit delayed but compared to what I was used to with Samsung not too bad. Great screen and the power management is really good and has improved with updates. Any news on a Z Ultra 2?
i have one and i like it al lot! i completely agree that samsung multitasking on it would make it one of the best phablets on the market. the design is beautiful !
Iv looked absolutely everywhere 😢😢 buying a sony xperia z ultra c6833 case but just don't know? On Ebay or amazon 😢 what to type in? The phone is 6.4inch screen? Iv been absolutely everywhere cannot find the right one? Incase i buy wrong type?
I recently got a 2nd hand Z ultra to switch from my 1 year old Note 3. I know for some may sound stupid but i wanted that phone a long time ago. And i never thought i would get use to sony phones being a Samsung user for Years(from Note 2 age) but i was wrong. Glad i made the right choice.
Hey man!, I´m having problems with mine, there's this animation that starts playing overtime I don't use my device for about 15 seconds. I find it very annoying and I don't know how to disable it, how can I get rid of that animation?
Hmm, I don't recognize any of your complaints. I still have the Ultra lying around, and it's as snappy and wonderful as always. Running Sony software, but I've only had it since April, by then they might have fixed a few things on software. It's a wonderful device, especially for the size and specs, I hope to see this line continues, it's an interesting one.
Hey, is there a fix for the touchscreen issues (scrolls interpreted as taps) for the normal edition Z devices? I've had the issue for almost a year through numerous firmware updates in my Z1 and it's driving me crazy.
I love my Z Ultra. I got it for $350 as a google play edition and I use it with Straight Talk. Coming from a Note 2 on verizon, I am glad that I made the switch to this phone and service. I just got really bored of Samsung and it felt so cheap. Sony Z Ultra feels great and looks great. Yes people make all types of comments about it, but I use my phones mai ly for reading amd watching youtube so this phone is perfect for my needs. It fits in my pocket with no problem... I have no complaints whatsoever.
Hello Taylor. Could you please confirm which is the latest OFFICIAL ROM (Android version) available to date on this device (Google Play edition)? Thanks a lot.
I've had this phone several times (I buy and sell phones a lot), I love the phone, but one thing that burns me up is that they didn't put a fricking flash on the camera.
Hi. I am an italian fan of this phablet. I would know how you increase the dimension of the icons in the homepage of the display in your video. i tried with the nova launcher, but it is not like your...thanks...and congratulations for your review! I confirm all you said...
Same realization. Never thought my z ultra is going to be more useful than I originally planned. If someone could slap a 7inch screen on the same form factor I would be very happy. The huawei mediapad x is an alternative but no dice.
I bought the Z Ultra on May, then sold it on Agoust... Why??... Well, it's a powerfull phone, sure it never lag, it can manage any application... It's a "power house", perfect storage (16GB+32GBmSD)... the camera was good despite does not have flash. It just too big... I like big phones (actually I have a 1320 as my daily driver)... but simply this is too much big... and as every SONY phone, it has a giant margins, that only increases the size of the phone. Maybe with a optimized size and the same screen it could be a better phone, because inside is a heavy power beast (no complain at all).
Well, I don't mind smaller, I prefer at least 5 inch (like my current s4) but I really like the price of this one unlocked, and it still has great specs. How much are the z1 and z2 without a contract?
My contract is up And the Z ultra is the phone I would buy if it were only compatible with Verizon wireless. The phone choices are slim at best with Verizon. Samsung, HTC and LG are the only offerings in the size I want.
Im into youtubing and playing games, not talking so this phone seems great. But one major concern. Can i use this with the at&t network? And r there more than one version of it? I see ..C6833, C6805. Some say LTE capable. Some dont. Need some help please. Thanks .
What I know about the Z Ultra is that its battery life is too short for my liking. It went on sale in my region with a free bluetooth earpiece for $450, and never picked it up. That pencil on screen as stylus didn't work well at all, with so much glitches and responsiveness was unreliable based on my 30-minute testing.
Sony need to refresh the Z Ultra! Give us the Z Ultra 2!
Xperia Note ultra is coming march
Do more one year later videos on phones. They are interesting.
Agreed! I'd love to see how the HTC One and Galaxy S4 are holding up for instance.
And that's how "After the Buzz" was born
Taylor martin, thanks to you, Now I finally know how to play swing copters.
Glad I could help! ^TM
Same with me
same here, lol
I tried it that way and it didn't work for me
Pocketnow what is the name of the widget app that you are using in your Z Ultra , the one that display the battery percentage..etc? Pls?
Talk about durability!
I bought my Z Ultra last April 2014 and now it's 2017 it still up and working and it has been my favorite phone ever since! I have iPhone 6 now and this but I feel most satisfied and happy when using my Z Ultra! Loved it and will never trade it to any phone even it ages, as long as it will remain working!
Its extremly simple to repair if anyone gets wrong. I have it since 2013, and I changed the Display like 10 or more times
I have this phone for a year now, it still serves me well, after upgrading it to Lollipop 5, the battery drained a bit faster but still managing, love the fact that it still in my male handbag most of the time (yes, I'm a teacher, so many things in my man bag, it includes markers, power bank, pen-drives etc)

And it's even water resistant
how to upgrade to lollipop 5? im using sony z ultra too
+Amirah Razali Still using it? I think its updated, no?
I LOVE MY Z ULTRA... and i dont see any better phone for that price...
Just goes to show how significant software is towards the overall user experience. More often than not, specs no longer determine how "good" a mobile device is, the software does.
These days, I just want some good hardware. That's what my money is buying.
Court Mejias not at all, I would gladly take a nexus 5 over a GS5.
MrPivotmaster98 that's what I'm saying. I too would buy a Nexus 5 that has better hardware then any Samsung phone. And when I say hardware I mean the build of the device.
Court Mejias have u guys seen a moto e vs s5? Moto e kinda makes s5 look like a joke in some cases
Kpop Fan samsung hardware is joke. Samsung is getting worse and worse. Especially now that they have released 6 different smart watches...
I always feel jealous when someone on the streets wearing this device. It's too beautiful
GAH. Thanks a lot Taylor! This is actually tempting!
Imagine this with Android L. Lol
I agree with you Taylor. I switched to the G2 and right now, I can't help but to think of the Z Ultra as my one true love that I'm missing so much... if only she had an LED flash
This was one of the most interesting pocketnow videos in a while! thanks for the personal update.
Having the Z Ultra for just over a year, I am still amazed with it. When I was reading the reviews before purchase, I was made aware of the camera being deficient. Taylor Martin, I respect you a lot for this honest double take of an older phone. You have my like and subscription.
I respect this so much. Buying an older, but still good phone at a good price. Not like the majority of people who have been tricked by companies into thinking that they always need to buy the latest phones at top dollar.
Been using it for a year and I couldn't be any happier with this mobile!

Finally a nice video from Taylor. Keep it up!
I got my Z Ultra C6833 My 23rd last year and I have been happy with it ever since! 😉👍
Well that's good👍
Good for you sir! I got mine on a discount plus.google.com/104923498734515538555/posts/7Z1Gm18r5iQ
Ok
Yeah, and then you updated it to Lollipop and told me that it was bad. This is why you get Motorola DROIDs.
We have this device in our household and I must say, it's a pleasure to use. But it's the Sony version. I haven't seen many issues with it. It's huge! I'm using the Z2, but the Z Ultra is a VERY good device. Awesome screen, fast processor, slim design, waterproof...

...wrong again. With a simple tweak of DPI you can enable tablet interface on Z Ultra.
Daumex Normal consumers don't do that upon opening the box.
timmy yong Still it's possible and easily doable... Root and change DPI, piece of cake. Android is a platform for tweaking anyway.
Daumex You don't buy a product and say, oh let me tweak this and customize that first before I use it. You put a product out there, people buy it, open it and it should already be comfortable to use. Unless people want more out of it then they mess with it.

How was the call quality?
How's the data connection now?
Good to hear you've finally found closure Taylor!

can you play PS3/PS4 with the Google Play sony?
Did the touch response ever get sorted out? On the Google play edition?
Got mine on release day in UK. Lots of os updates, always a bit delayed but compared to what I was used to with Samsung not too bad. Great screen and the power management is really good and has improved with updates. Any news on a Z Ultra 2?
It's cool to see an editor get genuinely excited about something like this.
Hmmm now I can't decide... This or G2 ? :/
Great big screen but no flashlight, no OIS...
i have one and i like it al lot! i completely agree that samsung multitasking on it would make it one of the best phablets on the market. the design is beautiful !
Really good video Taylor. Like a work of art.

Seriously, multi window? Bro, just install xposed and then find the multi window app.. That's it.
Yeah, I plan to once I get back from IFA. Just haven't had a chance yet. Should have done it as soon as I took it out of the box. Ha. ^TM
3165dwayne It depends what kind of immerssive mode you choose. You probably chose semi-immersive.
3165dwayne Thats what expanded desktop is supposed to do...
are you running any particular launcher on this or this is the stock ?
Your not enjoying it you just couldn't think of a better video

7 years later, and phones not much smaller than this with screens around this size have become the norm. What an interesting world
Yeah, I got the Z Ultra Google Play Edition, since it was so cheap. Best phone I've ever used.
Is it 1080p?
Where can I get this phone now with the Google play edition?

Hey man!, I´m having problems with mine, there's this animation that starts playing overtime I don't use my device for about 15 seconds. I find it very annoying and I don't know how to disable it, how can I get rid of that animation?
what suport for car u have ?
Hmm, I don't recognize any of your complaints. I still have the Ultra lying around, and it's as snappy and wonderful as always. Running Sony software, but I've only had it since April, by then they might have fixed a few things on software. It's a wonderful device, especially for the size and specs, I hope to see this line continues, it's an interesting one.
Hey, is there a fix for the touchscreen issues (scrolls interpreted as taps) for the normal edition Z devices? I've had the issue for almost a year through numerous firmware updates in my Z1 and it's driving me crazy.
I picked up Ultra for half avg. flag ship price price in shop few days ago and I love it.
What apps u use to display batt discharge & running task on main screen?
I love my Z Ultra. I got it for $350 as a google play edition and I use it with Straight Talk. Coming from a Note 2 on verizon, I am glad that I made the switch to this phone and service. Pocketnow Prove it.
paulyster lol yeh. Prove it!
Pocketnow Where did you get this for 350 dollars?
Is the camera good? My contract is almost up, and I'm looking for an unlocked phone at a decent price to replace mine, but I would like a good camera.
Get the z1 compact it's got a 20.7 camera
Sumtimes a smaller screen is better
Well, I don't mind smaller, I prefer at least 5 inch (like my current s4) but I really like the price of this one unlocked, and it still has great specs. How much are the z1 and z2 without a contract?
I think Big phones are cool cuz whenever the screen is biig its way better and more comfortable for your eyes
