Oh boy, have got a story…make it 4 NT! Bought my 13 Q5 Aug. 2021 from a dealer, carfax showed excellent maintainance, including presale service, 9 months later took a road trip in June last year, heard a strange metallic fluttering one evening at idle, no CEL, next morning no noise, drove back home from Louisiana no problem . Everything normal after 7k road trip. Then about a month ago a slight squealing sound after warmup and at idle only, checked everything all good, but sound emanating from behind cam bridge passenger side. Took it to the dealer, they suggesting the shield was in pieces and they had even seen a piece through the oil fill but no luck getting it out. They recommended tear down, “thanks but no” but thank you for the clue. I had previously done an oil service, never even noticed or thought of that shield. So I ordered up a boroscope and a couple of flexi magnets which haven’t even arrived yet, but two days ago (on a dry day after all the heavy rains here in the Bay Area) I noticed the sound went away, pulled the oil cap and way down below the oil drain gallery opening, there I noticed a piece of that shield just sitting there!!!!! Well I got to work to fish it out, turns there was both halves were under there!!! Took about 60-70 attempts as I was lifting from the edge of the pieces, and what I can’t fathom is the both pieces were a little bigger than than oil drain hole, that is just diabolical! So it took lifting it to the hole then grabbing with my long pointed needle nose pliers, but I got em both, afree about 2 hours. But in reviewing this video, I am missing the two skinny attachment tabs, hopefully they got flushed down to oil pan, will be doing an oil drain inspection next. No scoring on the intake cam lobes that are visible at oil fill, when the boroscope arrives, I will look at exhaust cam lobes. But for now that engine is still purring like a fat kitty! Maybe I better buy some Lottery tickets either way, lucky or not???

UPDATE: 13k miles later I got a hard misfire code on #2, not spark plug, not coil, low compression #2 cylinder, oil pan was pulled, metal fragments, motor shot! It started as a soft misfire at idle mostly, and got progressively worse, but got us home 2k miles later, we were in the middle of a road trip. Used motor being installed at the moment with new TC, WP, rear main seal, etc. It was a great engine at 130K+ until that “camshaft shield” was ingested !!!

Besides making an honest living I’m not motivated by money but it’s always a factor for everyone. Similar reason why I just did the 4 cylinder
As an engineer (not automotive) I wonder why that thing is there. No way they put a part there for fun. It must be mitigating some risk of dropping something in the hole. I'm not saying that you need it...just that someone decided that dropping a cap from a quart of oil or something was likely enough that they needed to do something about it.
A plastic cap is better than that shield getting chomped up to pieces by the spinning lobes, lucky my shield just got snapped in two retrievable pieces!
Hey I need help from Naptown tuner. My car has been having a random misfire for months now. I’ve replaced a lot on this car and can’t shake the misfire. Replaced coils, plugs, coil connectors, timing chain and tensioner, pcv valve, both oxygen sensors, air oil separator, cam bridge, spool valve and magnetic adjuster. Did all this and my check engine light still flashes with a random misfire and codes for pcv and o2 sensor after I already replaced them. Could the issue be that I need to reset the car with a vcd cord and program on a laptop? Please I need your help this is my only car
