I realize im late to comment on this, but a couple of ideas, one, use a pair of V blocks to rotate the mandrel in instead of the flat piece you demonstrated with, V block will keep it from rolling off and it will remain centered. The other idea is when you are sanding on the flat surface with the wet paper, instead of going back and forth make figure 8's and rotate the piece 1/4, then figure 8, rotate 1/4 turn. Get the idea! Its how we use to lap pressure seals and its a good way to maintain even sanding. Good video, thank you.

I made a list of item I use that happens to have the mini lathe and abalone sheets in it amzn.to/2YOY54n I got my lathe used so that is also an option. 😀
In regards to the mother of pearl strip breaking.....Would it be possible to make small cuts across the back of the sheet strip then bend the entire strip into a cirlcle? I have done this with thick steel and it might work.
I suggest you measure the inside if the sizer instead of the outside the mandrel. You'll be far more accurate measuring the ID of a cylinder than the OD of taper. You can see in the video it was .83 when you took it off and .75 when you clamped it up so I'm guessing it doesnt matter that much. 0.6 is your material thickness and you need to double it because you are working with diameter. 1.2 was what you needed. 3.159 x 20.95 for the OD.
Not all silver solder is the same. if it has a flux cord it is not meant to be used on jewelry, it is only 3% silver and the silver solder that you want to use is 75% silver. also that stuff melts at 400 degrees and the silver solder you want to use melts at 1200 degrees.😁👍
You have a wonderful way of explaining and walking us through the process. Which TA glue do you use for gluing the abalone down...the thin or thick? Thanks so much.
Well thanks and I use thick and med CA glue for most things. Thin is just a little too thin for the abalone. I'm working with Starbond.com now and you can use my code GomeowCreations to save some money on some CA glue. 😊👍
GomeowCreations I am going to order a few things and wondered how to do it to benefit you. I also need the abalone sheet which takes me to amazon but doesn’t show up in a cart I have started. But I will use your link so hopefully it works.
This video was so helpful. You really went into detail on all the small things other videos seem to take for granted. I have experience making wood pens and have decent skills with CA finishes, so making a ring seems like a great next project. I have a Sherline lathe so all I need to do is get setup for silver soldering. I guess I can cut my teeth on a stainless inlay blank to get started. Pricing out silver, I think I will buy copper first and practice with that until I feel confident enough to risk some better material. When using stone inlay, will it dull a carbide insert very quickly to level it off or should I use something else for that?
It's really going to depend on your stone that your are using to be honest. For the most part I use softer stones and they down seem to do anything to the tooling.

Lovely result! I was wondering about pickling the ring with the mixed metal edge bands attached - how come you don't end up with the silver being copper plated - or would that only happen if there was iron in the pickle pot?
Yeah, that only happens if you have steel/iron in the pickle pot. You can also get copper on your brass after heating it and leaving it in the pickle for too long. It will start to eat/remove the zinc from it so it will just leave the copper behind. To fix that you can just sand it a little or use a mix of hydrogen peroxide with white vinegar 1:1 This will eat the top layer of copper, just don't leave it in too long because it will just keep eating the copper.
Your bands are beautiful I think this one is my favorite! I would love to purchase this gorgeous band but unfortunately I would have to get married to wear it and I don’t plan on ever making that mistake again! I love your work it’s beautiful!
It might just be a millineal thing however you can totally wear rings without getting married. But be sure to wear it on any finger except the ring fingers!
Am I correct that the glue over the shell will polish so that the glue looks clear and shiny? I'm doing a couple tiny pendant pieces and the glue has dried to a matte but I haven't filed or sanded yet.
Can you heat abalone veneer up in boiling water? help it shape and bend more without breaking? If seen it done a bunch with wood and cellulose sheets to bend into shape
So yes and no. The stuff I have was made for doing flat inlays so it's just too thick for doing that. I know they have some thinner stuff but sadly I didn't have any when I made this. 😅 I'm do another video with the right stuff some day.
While I have a few pieces of abalone, I do want to get more, but cant find the larger shells like you displayed. Where can I find them? Thanks for the videos.
This is going to be the weirdest question ever probably, but with cuts like this, why use jeweler's saw, which is basically a very fine bladed coping saw, rather than a scroll saw with a metal blade and a guide or something similar? I get not using snips, which would bend and warp your metal, but I feel like there's small scale power tools that could make the lines straighter and for basic shapes, done quicker. Also, with the use of the lathe, it seems weird to use the cutter when a pierce of sandpaper on a block would suffice. I should say, my questions come from more of a woodworking background, so it's similar tools on a much smaller scale and I'm just curious. I know there's got to be a rationale behind the tool usage.
@GomeowCreations Hi! Just wanted you to know that actually the length is calculated pi x inner diameter + 2 x thickness. So: 3.14 x 19.75 + 2x 0.6 = 63.215. Well, that's one way to do it, but you can't multiply the thickness with pi, and you have to add 2x the thickness (as its 2 times in the circle), or it will give you false outcome. 😊
Well it would take a bit to make this starting from nothing. I could get all the tools needed for like $200-$300 if I don't use a lathe haha. if you want all the stuff that I have its going to be like $2000 - $4000+ 😅
GomeowCreations I saw in one of your videos where you can buy materials. What is the place again? Do they recommend what to buy for your business/hobby ? 🤗 Im located in the Netherlands by the way! 🙋🏼♀️ thank you!
I tried making my version on this ring and I think my pieces of the inlays are to small and also the ca glue turned white (using gorilla glue version of super glue) in some areas, no activator used. I'm at the point wondering if i should add more abalone pieces and CA glue and hope it all will turn clear? Or should I attempt to clean all glue and inlay out and start over? This is my first attempt in working with inlay/glue. Any suggestions?
Sorry this is a very late reply but I have had this happen and this is what I did. I cut out all of the white spots and refilled them with the ca glue. One other time this didn't help and there was too much to take out so I cut out everything and started over. I sucks but some times this happens but you will learn from it. Oh and try using very thin layers of glue to make sure that is all drys at the same time.
In depth question because I am in depth of detail why not place exact piece of sheet into ring?! And next question is the abalone high enough to fill ring all around evenly or do you fill with glue to make height?!
Well that is because I got the wrong kind of abalone for this ring, it was meant for flat inlays so it will just break it you bend it. There are other kinds that a much thinner that you can just bend it around and would have been much easier. And yes I filled it in will glue to fill out the ring, looking back I should have used a UV resin to do this. It would have been a lot easier and filled it in way faster.
Check out this video, I use UV resin in it and I have I link there to all the stuff I used. ruclips.net/video/3CCiTSnBwfQ/видео.html As for the Abalone you can try this but to be honest IDK if this is the right one or the same as what I have amzn.to/2yCy4xe
I was taught that to choose the correct saw blade you need to have at least 3 saw blade teeth covering the thickness of the metal you are cutting. I only mention this for those who are unaware of how to choose the correct saw blade
Randy, why can't you just cut one longer strip? It seems a bit flexible. Could it be heated or formed prior? If not using real abalone why use something like this (I know nothing about the material, so thanks for indulging my questions..)? Thanks.
I found out after the video was shoot that I could heat it to make it bend but this is after doing all of this haha. I was going to make another video later on using a resin and explain this. With out heat this stuff just snaps after about 30mm. 😅
This is beautiful, and it's so fascinating to watch the process. But it seems like you ended up pretty much losing the tri-color effect of the wire you made? (which was gorgeous, btw) Would you suggest just using a solid color wire instead? Tfs! Love your videos!

Wondering. What would be an approximate cost to start smithing jewelry like this?
Well it would take a bit to make this starting from nothing. I could get all the tools needed for like $200-$300 if I don't use a lathe haha. if you want all the stuff that I have its going to be like $2000 - $4000+ 😅
GomeowCreations I saw in one of your videos where you can buy materials. What is the place again? Do they recommend what to buy for your business/hobby ? 🤗 Im located in the Netherlands by the way! 🙋🏼♀️ thank you!
GomeowCreations is it possible to drill a hallow into a cylinder gemstone?
@@GomeowCreations Thank you is it possible to soak the ring in acetone to remove all and start over? I don't have tools or patience to cut out!
And where do u get it?
In depth question because I am in depth of detail why not place exact piece of sheet into ring?! And next question is the abalone high enough to fill ring all around evenly or do you fill with glue to make height?!
Well that is because I got the wrong kind of abalone for this ring, it was meant for flat inlays so it will just break it you bend it. There are other kinds that a much thinner that you can just bend it around and would have been much easier.
And yes I filled it in will glue to fill out the ring, looking back I should have used a UV resin to do this. It would have been a lot easier and filled it in way faster.
@@GomeowCreations ty its amazing just getting advice. Whats the best exact stuff to use which sheet and glues plz?!
Check out this video, I use UV resin in it and I have I link there to all the stuff I used. ruclips.net/video/3CCiTSnBwfQ/видео.html
As for the Abalone you can try this but to be honest IDK if this is the right one or the same as what I have amzn.to/2yCy4xe
Thanks a bunch. :)
No problem 😊
Hi there, love your videos, can you please tell me the name of the black glue that you used? Also the polishing equipment?
I like your Lathe! Where did you get it! How well do you like it. will it cut threads?
I believe it can cut threads but I have never done it. I got it used but you can get it one from harbor freight.
@@GomeowCreations Thanks for the tips!
I was taught that to choose the correct saw blade you need to have at least 3 saw blade teeth covering the thickness of the metal you are cutting. I only mention this for those who are unaware of how to choose the correct saw blade
Great video. What flux do you use? It looks really wet and pastey.
I use handy flux. I add water to it to get it how I want it. 😁👍
GomeowCreations thanks. Thats what i use but i find it pretty dry. Now i know i can add water. 👍
Let me know how that works for you.
Stupid question....what’s the pickeling solution? If I wanted to make my own what would I need? Thank you.
I have a video for that 😁👍 ruclips.net/video/1mPAXsKXb1Q/видео.html
How and where do you get the tools necessary to even make these
I think I have links to tools that I use in the description of the video 😁👍
Randy, why can't you just cut one longer strip? It seems a bit flexible. Could it be heated or formed prior? If not using real abalone why use something like this (I know nothing about the material, so thanks for indulging my questions..)? Thanks.
I found out after the video was shoot that I could heat it to make it bend but this is after doing all of this haha. I was going to make another video later on using a resin and explain this. With out heat this stuff just snaps after about 30mm. 😅
Where can I get a sheet of the abalone and the glue
This is where I got it:

This is beautiful, and it's so fascinating to watch the process. But it seems like you ended up pretty much losing the tri-color effect of the wire you made? (which was gorgeous, btw) Would you suggest just using a solid color wire instead? Tfs! Love your videos!
You do lose the colors after a fresh polish but they will change color a bit over time and be very visible.
Heyy, please aswer me... Existe some acid what use for Paint the chapa like you show in the vídeo?
I don't understand what your are asking I'm sorry, can you phrase it in a different way?
does Abalone get soft in water?
To be honest I really done know 😅
Can you submerge the abalone in water to make it more pliable?
Did you use medium viscosity CA glue? Thin?
I was using thick if I remember right.
Good job, I'm sure u noticed that next time choose the pieces of Abalone more carefully!
Can anyone tell me how to work out what size saw blade to use with various metal thicknesses?
I used a 3/0 and 2/0 for just about everything. You can look up a saw blade size sheet if you want to see what works with what metal sizes.
@@GomeowCreations Awesome! I do the same, though I couldn't tell you why. I'll definitely do the research to see if I can improve. Thanks. :)
Hey, what material ist that Hammer Made of? Thnx
Was that a ZiG Saw or is your arm actually that fast?
That is just me speeding up the video haha
Wow ! 😗😗
😁
What do u call the colored matrial?

Where do you get the abalone sheet?
I got this off of Amazon but you can get off of eBay also I have links in the description to all the stuff I used.
