If you’ve ever wondered if supplements are worthwhile or just create expensive urine, this is the podcast episode for you. While I wish it wasn’t the case, I do believe we need supplements to make up for the nutrients we can no longer get through food alone. It’s extra important to note, though, that not all supplements are created equal. And please keep in mind they’re called “supplements” for a reason, not “replacements”-they are meant to supplement a healthy diet and lifestyle to provide the most impact.
Today, I’m excited to take a deeper dive into this topic with one of my most trusted sources when it comes to nutrition and dietary research, Chris Kresser. Chris Kresser M.S., L.Ac. is the co-founder of the California Center for Functional Medicine, the founder of Kresser Institute, the host of the top-ranked health podcast Revolution Health Radio, the creator of ChrisKresser.com, and the New York Times best-selling author of The Paleo Cure and Unconventional Medicine. Chris is one of the most respected clinicians and educators in the fields of Functional Medicine and ancestral health and has trained over 2,000 clinicians and health coaches from over 50 countries in his unique approach. He has recently launched Adapt Naturals, a supplement line designed to add back in what the modern world has squeezed out and help people perform and feel their best.
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, and Cozy Earth.

Between Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Eric Berg there is so much value that these two men give, for free, to the world. They should be a combined team and be the Surgeon General team responsible for the nation's health. I have learned so much from both of these very dedicated and honourable men who have a mission to teach and help people. *Bravo gents!*

I found this an excellent presentation of the key issues concerning the role of nutrients for optimal human health. It is a topic truly impossible to be covered in almost 1.5 hrs but this was an impressive job at covering so much material. Kris, thank you for an informative presentation. Mark I enjoyed your participation and contribution to this informative talk. This is information that is so much needed- even among the "healthy conscious". The vegan wars are happening. In my women's health practice, I see chronic yeast infections among vegans as well as hormone imbalance. Primarily they are missing adequate healthy fats but also absorbable proteins. I could go on. Simply, thank you. I enjoyed listening (however, yes, I am a member of the "choir").

Thank you for your podcast and everything you do to bring this information to the general public! I'm a long time subscriber and even bought your first three books when I didn't have money to spend on books. I've been sick most of my life and from my 20's to mid 30's I was literally dying (multiple blood transfusions, hospital stays, over 60 iron infusions) and doctors were telling me they didn't know what was wrong with me - other than anemia. I got down to 98 pounds & had a heart attack from severe anemia years before being diagnosed with Celiac Disease and Pernicious Anemia among a whole list of things.
I'm now in my 40's and am still sick, still can't keep my iron up. Even when it's up, my iron saturation is never above 11%. Right now it's at 8%, my folate is low and I feel AWFUL. I know this comment is way too long but I recently read that all celiacs should have their copper and zinc tested which mine never has been and now I've learned (from this podcast) that copper is needed for optimal iron! It seems like common sense but no doctor or specialist I've ever seen thought to check my levels. It's infuriating...but I'm THANKFUL FOR YOU and all you've taught me. If you ever do read this; is there anything that you can think of that I may need to be doing? What kind of specialist should I see if I can't see a celiac specialist and besides the deficiencies talked about here today, are there any others that may still be low in my case after years of severe malnutrition? Because even though I'm on a strict gluten free diet and have gained over a hundred pounds, I still feel awful and need Iron infusions and weekly B12 shots (for three years now) which isn't common from what I understand. So that tells me that there are definitely other deficiencies or something that keep my levels from ever reaching a point where they're optimal.
ANYWAY! THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!!

And forgive me for getting ahead of myself lol. I did pause halfway through to comment so I know we're getting there. Also, I don't have money to pay out of pocket for all these tests so I need to have my doctor order them. Thanks again.

Supplementing will become necessity in future if not already as we come to realise that our food is not able to keep us healthy anymore. Would be interesting to know where these supplements will come from, laboratories of course but what are the raw materials required and where do they come from? I supplement all sorts but recently suffered heart palpitaions, after deduction I can now attribute that to magnesium, I was taking every day but obviously I do not need it that regularly as my diet is rich in magnesium anyway.

I've tried all the different kinds and even at 100mg I end up with one, or a combination of all of the following: diarrhea, bloating, painful contractions of my intestines, copious amounts of gas, etc. I took 100mg of mag 24 hours ago and am still dealing with the after affects.

Take much less magnesium, say 1/4 of that, and take it every other day for two weeks. Next, take that same amount daily for two weeks. If you're doing fine, increase your dose _a little_ . It could take you months to adjust to taking magnesium, but slow and easy is the best way for many people.
