I've been on statins for 15 years after my MI. I've had this discussion about statins with my cardiologist several times and lately I've cut my intake in half and stopped blood pressure medication. I have also lost 45 lbs and I plan on reducing most or all of my other heart medications.

I took statins for a couple of months and I thought they were making my muscles ache more and I already have a lot of pain so I refuse to take them. The last 6 months I've lost 35 lb and 4 months ago I quit taking the blood pressure medication just told my doctor about it the other day lol. I don't ask my doctor what he thinks I should do I go in and I tell him what I've done. If they can experiment on me I can too.

@@xBettyjo I've got very good at advocating for myself. What I take is going to affect me, not the doctor. I am very thankful for the large amount of free information that is available here and elsewhere on the internet. It was when I was researching diabetes after being diagnosed October 2021 that I learned about low carb. After only 3 months I had put my diabetes into remissions. I've had other good results that just happened without even trying. I'm 65 and recently had a CT coronary angiogram with a CAC score of 0. My LDL has gone up a lot but the other numbers are fantastic. I'm expecting my cardiologist to say to go on a statin as a preventative measure. I saw him before the high LDL blood test result and he was already saying to go an a statin and I said no. And I will continue to say no. I've had to be very firm with my GP too, but it's been good practice before the cardiologist appointment.

I had a heart attack 1 year ago. I have side effects from Statins. My doctor did cut the dose and change the brand, however I still have muscle pains particuly in my legs and toes and brain fog, dizziness and confusion at times. I also have chest pressure (the heart is a musle). Here is my main questions since my HDL and CDL are a "normal" levels for my age 79. Q. I had my gallbladder removed in 1972 and my understanding from my own research, is that the Liver and the Gallbladder work together in controling cholestorals. Without the "acid" from the Gallbladder and after listening to this video, I am more leaning toward wondering about the effect on "soft plaque" ...? I have asked my Cardio Doctor about this and have had no responce. Thanks Dr Hyman and Dr Malhotra your work. Dr Hyman, I have been following you for several years now. Again Thank You.

My "cardio iq" test showed 150 ldl-c however, my genetics have a propensity for small particle ldl's, thunk LPa(which is another undecided argument for root cause of artherosclerosis). I work in cardiology. What would you consider too low of an LDL? I am seeing LDL very low with very low VLDL on these cholesterol lowering meds. I’m concerned that the LDL is too low.

    • @olechka1965
      @olechka1965 2 года назад +4

Study after study show the same effect: low "bad" cholesterol (TC below 230 or LDL below 130) is associated with reduced MACE and even cardio-mortality. However, simultaneously, this *increases* mortality from other causes and all-cause mortality.
That's the dilemma, the *main* cholesterol dilemma, which creates a lot of confusion when is not put into the center of discussion!
Low "bad" cholesterol is dangerous, because people become weak, frail, and susceptible to *other* killers.
In a sense, heart doctors shift mortality from CVD to respiratory diseases, cancers, accidents (falls), autoimmunity, probably to Alzheimer, infections, suicides, etc.
Now, VLDL has almost nothing to do with "cholesterol". These particles carry *triglycerides*, and more or less simply mathematically proportional to TG, namely VLDL = TG/5 in American units. You can check this for any of your patents. Lowering TG below say 75 is very important and unconditionally healthy, because TG is one of 5 hallmarks of metabolic syndrome.

I was on insulin for type two statins and four blood pressure medicine medicines could only sleep and eat had no energy was having a little strokes almost every month. I walked out of the doctors office. Quit taking the meds figuring I would just die. I’m not perfect, but I have some weight, the insulin used to make me eat too much. I still have diabetes, but the numbers are a lot lower. I think the medical profession is getting something wrong. I think it’s the bad LDHL there is no such thing we need all of the fat we can get to me. This is what was wrong. The blood pressure has to do with nitric oxide. You have to learn all about it, but that is the real problem I wish I could go back 15 years and never take statins blood pressure medicine, it did not help my life. I had a major stroke about four years ago. It really changed my life. I don’t believe what Doctor say anymore because I live the nightmare.

From the NHS UK heart age calculator page:
High cholesterol is when you have too much of a fatty substance called cholesterol in your blood.
It's mainly caused by eating fatty food, not exercising enough, being overweight, smoking and drinking alcohol. It can also run in families.
The funny part is they only give you space to add in HDL and total cholesterol, and then tell you fatty food causes cholesterol in your blood and how you need to not eat fatty foods. Mind you I guess they have to fit in with the nonsense on their other pages like the NHS Eat (not so) Well guides where they're still pushing carbs, fructose and low fat nonsense.

Heart disease is more likely a Vitamin K2 deficiency caused by a combination of reduced animal (saturated) fat and the damage to the microbiome, which if healthy can make K2 for us, by processed foods. With adequate K2 the body can make osteocalcin, sending calcium to the bones, where it can do good, instead of turning cholesterol to the dark side causng calcification of soft tissue.
Epidemics of atheroserosis and osteoporosis both have the same root cause, the decrease of animal (saturated) fat from the diet, causing an almost universal Vitamin K2 deficiency.

Peter Attia in his book Outlive says, if you apoB is high, than hit your LDL-C levels hard with statins (or other drugs) to go even below recommended 70mg/dL, to 10-20 mg/dL. Here we hear, don't take statins, do all those other things (which all make sense), but is this enough? Is it better to be safe then sorry and take statins?

I had heart issues for over a year and had been desperately looking online for solutions. In the end the root cause was me over supplementing vitamins. In particular vitamin B. I thought it would help, but it was the reason I was having problems to begin with. Not every vitamin has this issue but the vitamin B group is a delicate one that you can easily get in excessive amounts causing a huge amount of trouble.

Dr I am 27 with a wife and 2 sons just recently diagnosed with heart disease. I have an ejection fraction of 40% and idk why aside from being overweight and the bad diet I’ve had the past 10 years. I am 5’6 215 recently started the Leto diet about 3 weeks ago and my triglycerides shot down from 150 to 98 cholesterol is also lowering and now I’m not considered diabetic along with my blood pressure going from consistently 150/100 to 135/80 sometimes 70. Please doc idk what to do and I really don’t believe the 5 pills the heart failure specialist wants to put me on is the way to go. I also have sleep apnea although I don’t think it’s severe. Please help me with any advice. I need to be around for my wife and sons but I just don’t think the pills are the answer especially after seeing how my levels shot down in 2 weeks of keto. The doctor wants me on entresto, jardiance a statin and something else.

I'd like to know your thoughts on the concept that once you are on a statin, you can't come off of it. I know you speak a lot about taking patients off statins, but it is my understanding that you can't just easily stop taking a statin because you get a rebound effect and that is my fear behind even trying a statin, that then I will be stuck with it. If you spoke of this in the video, then I missed it. Thank you.

I have taken myself off statins twice, no problem. There are books you can read to understand this . Research for yourself. I have had all tests and no artery buildup but was prescribed automatically because after virus attacked my heart I then got stroke. I advised my cardiologist after a year and she said ok to go cold turkey off statin no need to taper if that was my choice.

Our body is in full control of our cholesterol and lipids, it makes whatever it needs at that moment in time. To think we can outsmart millions of years of evolution is laughable. The triglyceride to HDL ratio, can be somewhat useful as a marker of metabolic health, but they are not the cause of heart disease or anything else for that matter. There are plenty of studies that show the higher your LDL the longer you live. If you are eating a high carb SAD diet and you want to get healthy and improve your chance of preventing heart disease, cancer, diabetes etc., go on a low carb diet anywhere from Keto to carnivore.

But patients don't take statins for 5 years, which was the length of the study. They take statins for life. Over a life time, they can add years or decades to your life. The video doesn't cover this. Talking about 5-year results isn't a complete picture and is skewed.
The part about people dying less with high LDL is because older people who are dying in a hospital bed deplete their LDL reserves. It's used up when you are critically ill. Therefore, high LDL data is skewed because it does not take into account critical illness depleting LDL.
