Delighted to discover this recording. I was one of the six boy dancers employed by Norman Maen for this production. My memory is that the singing was recorded live, the orchestra being in another studio at Riverside.. Strategically placed monitors kept the performers in contact with the musical director. Bill Drysdale
ohhh really? it is even more wonderful knowing that... It was feeling like live, but I was thinking that in those days all was dubbed... thanks for the info :)
True, I think he could have handled the part of Freddy's vocals as well. But that was the logic if you can call it, of the powers that be. It was a habit of the studios at that time to hire vocalists to dub for some actors. Bill Shirley who dubbed for Jeremy had more of a tenor tonality and evenness to his voice and like Marni Nixon was a professional vocalist.

Jeremy is utterly magnificent. Larger than life. I wonder what his parents looked like and were like. How cool they generated such a charisma machine :)
His mother was a wealthy heiress, his father a high ranking army officer, who told him if he wanted to be an actor he had to change his surname. Dad didn't think much of the theatre, you see, also didn't understand how immensely talented Jeremy was.
I met Jeremy very briefly with his mother at an Archery society he belonged to , his mother was strikingly beautiful and witty , I would say he takes after his mother .
@AMT I was 22 yrs in 1959 , yes I did hear him speak and he did show slight signs of his speech impediment , yes , he was very gracious and polite a born gentleman .
Fans of the great Jeremy Brett may not realise that along side him and the equally great Mary Costa in this film you have several renowned opera singers of the past. Joyce Blackham - a very popular Carmen with Sadlers Wells / English National Opera as Valencienne. Ryland Davies as Camille had an international career as a tenor and recorded a great deal. In the small role of Olga you have the amazing Czech singer Gita Denise who sang the role of Carmen at La Scala , Milan no less and later took a regular acting role in the soap opera Coronation Street. Both Ryland and Gita were professors at the Royal Northern College of Music for a while which is where I met them. Among the Grisettes you have Maureen Keetch who broadcast regularly with The Parlour Quartet, Soo Bee Lee an enchanting and popular soprano from Singapore, later professor at London College of Music and Ann Hood , a well known principal of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company who went on to sing at the English National Opera . Last but least there is the inomitable Derek Hammond Stroud. This film is a treasure trove - thank you Gypsycyn!
Thank you Tenortalker for your interesting and informed comments re- this remarkable version of The Merry Widow, I would love to own a remastered recording. I was lucky enough to meet Jeremy. My partner was one of the wardrobe masters at the BBC and worked with Jeremy a number of times, they became good friends, I worked then as a crew member for BA and was surprised one morning after returning home from an overnight flight to find Jeremy sitting in my living room having coffee chatting to my partner. They had finished filming a night shoot and he accepted an invitation for breakfast. He was delightful, funny, charming and a wonderful raconteur. Later he invited us to visit at his lovely house in Holland Park before he moved eventually to a flat overlooking Clapham Common.
Gooodnesss.. Jeremy Brett is beautiful... his looks remind me of Rufus Sewell in one of his earlier movies with Kate Beckingsal.. . I loved Brett in "My Fair Lady" with Audrey Hepburn..

I am sorry Jeremy Brett is dead. He was a good actor. The best Sherlock Holmes, better than Basil Rathbone, who always sounded smug, and Nigel Bruce, who sounded like a schoolboy. Some of the films with them acting, aren't in the Sherlock Holmes long, or short stories.
Jeremy was 35 when this was made, and if you look carefully you can see a very young(30 year old) David Kernan. Also a young(30 year old) John Savident from Coronation Street.
Does anybody know whether it's possible to buy this film in good quality? It's impossible that such a masterpiece hasn't been preserved in better quality, I can't believe that!
Mary Costa (The Merry Widow), singing the duet with Jeremy Brett (Danilo), was the speaking and singing voice of Princess Aurora in Disney's Sleeping Beauty 1959.

This production follows the original score and libretto very faithfully and has all the requisite panache and elegance. The voices are first rate, led by Mary Costa, Joyce Blackham and Ryland Davies, but it is debonair, sometime rakish, Jeremy Brett as Danilo who is the vocal and stylistic touchstone of the production. All the supporting parts are well cast, especially Derek Hammond-Stroud as the pompous, fretful Baron. Only Niegus is slighted here, relieved of much of his tiresome business and gratuitous solo turn with the grisettes, that may come as a blessing to some. The English adaptation, direction and choreography served these performers well. Now, I only wish we had a clearer copy of this masterpiece.
He was always so quick with those long legs..and the way he so energetically twirled the Merry Widow made me laugh. BUT, why all that makeup especially the blue and white eyeshadow? None of the others had so much.. why? Thank you so much for one enjoyable film.
I agree , I was not impressed with the singing of On The street Where You Live in either the film or London stage . Somebody suggested they wanted a tenor voice that sounds younger . I have looked for this film especially to hear Jeremy Brett's real voice and am very impressed .

Thank You for posting this(to me)unknown version of The Merry Widow,it's excellent! A great cast(especially Jeremy Brett) and a sympathetic, original(period) production. One small odd thing. At the end of the Widow Hannah says she loses all her money if she marries(much consternation),she then confesses that this is because it all goes to her new husband(much rejoicing) they cut this short scene out of this production. As it is only a couple of lines that round the operetta off I can't think why?
Jeremy Brett's singing voice WAS dubbed for the movie "My Fair Lady," but NOT for "The Merry Widow." This WAS Jeremy Brett's own singing voice. It was not dubbed here. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Brett

@AMT There is a wonderful production of "Love's Labors Lost" starring Brett. It is out there somewhere, and I find it from time to time. It's well worth looking for it. If I can find it again, I'll send it on. Obviously I share your fascination with this man.
@AMT If you can reach it, watch LOVE'S LABORS LOST on you tube. The 1975 production stars Jeremy Brett and Martin Shaw
(a very young George Gently). WOW.
I can die now too! :D, but first I will watch and listen to JB again and again and again and again.... Thank you for sharing this gem!! :-)
xI think this is my favorite Jeremy Brett performance - he sings he dances he romances! And he's just that little bit camp. His entrance is delicious.

What a glorious gem!
Thank you for this absolutely sensational performance of "The Merry Widow" starring Mary Costa, Jeremy Brett, Joyce Blackham, Ryland Davies, Derek Hammond-Stroud, directed John Gorrie. Costa and Brett are magical together, both in prime form and the luxury casting in the supporting cast is incredible. This is my favorite "Merry Widow" performance - truly appreciate you posting this truly spectacular performance and production.
You're very welcome! Thank you for watching!
OMG, JB is simply sublime!
In a generation in love with Justin Bieber and One Direction, lost in love with Jeremy
Alfred Holt our JB is much more superior, in many aspects
💙
@@neptunestardust Justin who?!? Our JB is well spoken, well bred, versatile, prolific, an excellent singer/ performer...and drop dead gorgeous! Need I say more?
Denise Andrews i was talking about Jeremy.
Justin B is no where near to being HALF the man Jeremy was. I would never talk about Justin in a good light as i simply find his music appalling
@@neptunestardust Oh, We are on the same page! I meant to respond to violetsoup, who started her comment with "in a generation in love with Justin Beiber..." Just calling that boy's name is bad enough...
Lawrence O. Was with him in his training
In theatre..He told him to have the body of a God. Jeramy has that and his body movements are a joy to watch. He has it throughout his performances. So beautiful in Sherlock Holmes. He completes every woman's fantasy. SUCH A BEAUTIFUL man. With a beautiful soul.
I love it when he jumps all of a sudden out of the coach: .Watsooooooooooon! We are leaving in 5 minutes
Bravo!!! Simply devine! ♥️
@@soniavadnjal7553 She was an heir to the Cadbury chocolate fortune. Died in a tragic car accident..
@AMT I was 22 yrs in 1959 , yes I did hear him speak and he did show slight signs of his speech impediment , yes , he was very gracious and polite a born gentleman .
@AMT strikingly beautiful was how I described her, I didn't see her as lovely, I didn't appreciate her sense of humor .
Thanks for posting this, kind fellow fan of JB! I think God has given me a present after the hard works I've finished.
Thank you, thank you for uploading this. I can die happy!
Tenortalker
Mary Costa the one and only voice of Princess Aurora from Disney's Sleeping Beauty!
Thanks for the information. Very interesting!
Well Said !!! I'm so glad you drew attention to the other notable singers who should not be overlooked in this beautiful production .
He's been reminding of Bradley Cooper--but more elegant than Bradley.
In this production Brett reminded me of the actor named David Selby who played Quentin Collins in the Gothic soap opera entitled "Dark Shadows".
Nothing to do with any of them, I dare say...He is a real english gentleman@@abisheldon5208
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO JERAMY BRETT THERE IS NO ONE LIKE YOU
Gorgeous!
Thank you for this beautiful video.
Incredible talent.
Bless you for this! I bought the CD years ago on eBay but never expected to see the full production!
Oh gypsycyn blessings upon thy head now that I have discovered your channel. May your dogs and horses flourish, may your gypsy wagon never break down when you take the high road and I take the low and both of us meet in a traffic jam on the Higggghwayy!
Seriously speaking, these comes under the category of unexpected treasures. I have subscribed, of course, thankee kindly Ma'am/ sir.
Agreed!😅💯😅
'May your dogs and horses flourish' is such a beautiful expression and I hope I will do something worthy one day to have that kind of blessing bestowed upon myself. Of course I agree wholeheartedly with this and all the other blessings and could not be more grateful for this upload.
I love this. Wonderful production with a wonderful cast. Jeremy Brett and Mary Costa are the perfect Danilo and Anna.
Yes Definitely someone or the BBC make this into DVD for all fans of the late Jeremy Brett!!!!
Awesome! THANK YOU!!
Thank you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The lovely Mary Costa is still with us (as of 2013) aged 83.She was also the voice of Princess Aurora in Disneys Sleeping Beauty
So happy to hear about mary costa
She was still alive in January of 2021.

thank you so much
Absolutely wonderful :D
RIP multi talented Jeremy Brett.
OMG! the incredible Mary Costa! I heard her sing this in San Francisco... unforgettable.
She is the singing in Sleeping Beauty.wonderful.
Does anybody know whether it's possible to buy this film in good quality? It's impossible that such a masterpiece hasn't been preserved in better quality, I can't believe that!
I wish this was available… would definitely buy.
Mary Costa (The Merry Widow), singing the duet with Jeremy Brett (Danilo), was the speaking and singing voice of Princess Aurora in Disney's Sleeping Beauty 1959.
Men:
Ladies’ choice
Did you hear that gladd’ning voice?
It’s enough to rouse the hair
As well as make the heart rejoice
She looks this way at me
But will she say to me
Dear madam, I am standing by
And now it’s ladies’ choice
Hanna Glawari:
Gentlemen, though I may refuse
I’ve no objection
Gentlemen, how can I choose
With such a wide selection
If I don’t decide on one
I’ll be disappointing none
There are younger girls aplenty
Count Danilo: Better rich than sweet and twenty
Men: Take my arm, take the floor
Count Danilo: My club(???) assistant is a bore/boor(?)
Men: Once and then no more
Count Danilo: I must work to save the day
I must get these lads away
Storm breaks, thundering getting frightening
I’ll fetch conductors for their lightning
Man 1:
Just look at the way that she plays with me
The worst thing to do to a man
For all the attention she pays to me
One might as well be in Japan
Man 2:
For years women argue and fight to vote
On terms on a par with a man (?)
They’ve got what they wanted, the right to vote
What next if they don’t when they can?
Man 1: Here’s a proposal
Man 2: And here’s another
Both: My new election banner(?) now advance
Man 1: Vote for Mr. Cascada
Man 2: Vote for Mr. St Brioche
Both: He’s far the best one to choose for a dance
Men: Down with Mr. Cascada, Down with Mr. St Brioche
I’m far the best one to choose for a dance
Hanna Glawari:
My answer to that one is easy
For all party (cocussa grim?????)
The men are too bumptious and breezy
The women are (blouncy?) and prim
But if you insist on promoting
This game of a mock party fight
I’ll work for my country by voting
And win the election tonight
Man 1: I’ve had a brainwave
Man 2: I’ve had another
Hanna Glawari:
Then I must do the very best I can
Serious reflection goes before election
Which of the two is the proud, lucky man
All:
Serious reflection goes before election
Which of us all is the proud, lucky man
Hanna Glawari:
Gentlemen, you win
It looks as if you’re not to be resisted
Very well, I’ll make my choice
Women: Ladies’ choice, ladies’ choice
Count Danilo:
Rescued in the nick of time
Young lovers all awake
Night brings you waltz time
And the moonlight sings in waltz time
All the lanterns are swinging
And burning low
Where are the fond couples clinging?
As ‘round they go
Young lovers all take part
Bright, sign and beauty (???)
Play your part now
Do your duty
For the dawn breaks by and by
Woman: If you please, sir, here am I
Count Danilo:
Come away, come away, to the ball
Where the dreams that you dream will be true
For the strings, as they play, seem to call
Beckon and call to you
Come away, come away, to the waltz
Float along on a lilting refrain (???)
To the land of desire, where no heart can be false
And the world will be young again
Women:
Lead away, we all awake (???)
Choir:
Young lovers all awake
Night brings you waltz time
And the moonlight sings in waltz time
All the lanterns are swinging
And burning low
Where are the fond couples clinging?
As ‘round they go
Young lovers all take part
Bright, sign and beauty (???)
Play your part now
Do your duty
For the sun wakes, and the dawn breaks (???)
Young lovers all awake
(Night storms away?????)
Still after a half century the greatest Merry Widow on film. Mary Costa defines and owns the role: this should be retitled "The Mary Widow"!
Adonis to play Danilo!
He was always so quick with those long legs..and the way he so energetically twirled the Merry Widow made me laugh. BUT, why all that makeup especially the blue and white eyeshadow? None of the others had so much.. why? Thank you so much for one enjoyable film.
shirley savitts
This film would’ve been shown in black and white. That is why Brett would’ve had that makeup
@@neptunestardust no, not in 1968. That was made and shown in colour...
THANK YOU!!!!! Even though i have seen this, it is great to have the full version!!!!
Jeremyyyyy i love u
I still don't understand why they dubbed over his singing voice in My Fair Lady, he could clearly sing beautifully
I agree , I was not impressed with the singing of On The street Where You Live in either the film or London stage . Somebody suggested they wanted a tenor voice that sounds younger . I have looked for this film especially to hear Jeremy Brett's real voice and am very impressed .
Apparently, JB is as surprised to find his voice was dubbed.
This was a BBC production that was broadcast on Christmas Day 1968. It's doubtful the BBC are able to sell it due to copyright issues.
Nagyon tetszik. Csodás élmény a számomra. Köszönöm, hogy megnézhettem. Többször is megfogom. Lehár Ferenc örök és magyar, művei briliánsak.

Agreed
That win the beauty prize
Indeed
The next, poor thing, relies on charms of coarser mould

Not I!

I'll try
All's one to all men where there's gold
Beyond the Andes it may perhaps be so
It's human nature wherever you may go
I swear for my part, whatever I may do, You'll never hear me saying 'I love you'.
Im thinking of a smart lieutenant, No, not so very long ago. You were the boy I used to know, You were the boy that loved me so. Now look at him, that smart lieutenant, boasts half a dozen loves or more. And as for me, I've two or three. But can you guess what they love me for.
Why care
Their love for me has fled
But where?
They love my bank instead
They dare?
The good old days are dead the days when knights were bold.
And so?
The old hand four times wed
Ah no!
or rosebud convent-bred
O-ho
All's one to all men where there's gold!
In cave or jungle it may or may not be
From Timbuctoo, round the world, believe you me!
I swear for my part whatever I may do, You'll never hear me saying 'I love you'.
One day I'll catch you saying 'I love you'.
You'll never catch me saying 'I love you'.

wow! thank you so much for the text! You can't imagine for how long have I been looking for it ! God bless you!!
I've spent a lot of time trying to restore your video. Though not perfect, the result is pretty good. How can I send it to you?
BILL DRYSDALE have you got answer? if not, could you possibly upload it your self and give credit to op? it would be wonderful to see better quality. i would spend money to buy these old gems of JB if there are some where to buy legally. what a shame many have gone missing.
Could you please upload your video? It must be a real treasure!
It's length is actually 1 hour 43 minutes, not the 2 hours it shows.
Does anyone have the script for this? I can’t understand anything from the quality 😭 thank you so much for uploading though!
Thank You for posting this(to me)unknown version of The Merry Widow,it's excellent!
A great cast(especially Jeremy Brett) and a sympathetic,original(period) production.
One small odd thing. At the end of the Widow Hannah says she loses all her money if she marries(much consternation),she then confesses that this is because it all goes to her new husband(much rejoicing) they cut this short scene out of this production. As it is only a couple of lines that round the operetta off I can't think why?
At @38.28" there is some gorgeous Ukrainian dancing going on...lovely!!! Thanks for posting this, I love it!
What is happening nothing shows on screen total blank I love this performance and would like to see it again
Thank you. Interest in Brett is alive and well! I can't understand the females when they sing!
Exactly! Their voices are like in an Opera, like the divas..
It’s an operetta so of course it’s with opera voices @@ingeblanco3561
Who decided to dub the voice of Jeremy Brett by Bill Shirley and why?
Jeremy Brett's singing voice WAS dubbed for the movie "My Fair Lady," but NOT for "The Merry Widow." This WAS Jeremy Brett's own singing voice. It was not dubbed here. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Brett
The Studios I think
I know this is slightly random, but, where did you get this from? I wanted to buy it, but I can't find it anywhere, and I'm afraid this might get taken down one day.
Other than that, thank you so much for uploading this, I think it's my favourite film starring Jeremy Brett. :)
Note the incredible advancement of the Camera Technology in productions that followed!
Esta versión es una delicia.
The quality of the video is exponentially better than it was some months ago, with strong color and better sound. What did you do?
Nothing at all. I think we can Thank RUclips for that. They must have an automatic video enhancer that kicks in when needed. Enjoy!☺
Has anyone found the stage play Hamlet with Jeremy Brett as Hamlet? I can find other versions on RUclips but his is missing.
I don’t believe it was recorded
I don’t think it was standard in those days to film plays
It's interesting that Brett's singing was dubbed in My Fair Lady - totally unnecessary!
