I love the seriousness during the farts of 'Corps De Blah' and your 'wow' straight after one lol.. But in all seriousness, I fully agree with you, i'm 26 years old, and first discovered Walker's later works when I was 20 with 'The Drift' by watching (the excellent) ''30 Century Man''.documentary. It opened my mind to find his work so I bought 'The Drift' and look me along time to fully embrace it (though certain tracks like 'Jesse' I loved immediately) and was VERY pleased when 'Bish Bosch' appeared.. It's a great album, and your review was amazing, my only sadness is it wasn't longer! xx
This is probably my favourite album ever, and I've been going a long time and listened to many, many albums. Scott Walker was very special and very precious. I'm so grateful that he kept on producing new, challenging music long after other musicians would have given up.
I just came across this album as im returning to the city, scrambling, no money, no home, the stimulation after living isolated, the sensory overload, and people. The industrial environment, the hunt for shelter, screeching trains, etc... It came at the right time. Great review and my thoughts exactly, reality, damn. , harsh aliveness, joyful pains..
Amazing review, and spot on about the wealth of experience and reflection that leads to musical productions like these. I too agree that there was no bullshit behind what Scott put into the world!
i enjoy it immensely. it's bleak sound is one of ethereal quality, and i find it uplifting. his voice sounds so desperate at points on the record.... it just floors me. love your reaction at the end. haha. basically me after first hearing "Epizootics!"
"The tension and paradox in Scott's music is that his voice has a touch of lounge-singer in it- a very wholesome, rich, straightforward voice with extremely clear enunciation- but then it's contrasted against these highly inventive, idiosyncratic arrangements and lyrics that got stranger and more otherworldly with time. That was the grand paradox to me. His voice sounds like something my grandmother would have enjoyed from a singer on the Lawrence Welk Show, while simultaneously the compositions and lyrics and instrumentals sound like they were conceived on an LSD binge. And the further they departed from the wholesome delivery of his voice, the more the paradox between worlds became palpably tense. I love Velvet Underground and MC5 too but to my sensibility, Scott was in a sense a more unique format of experimentation, because he didn't achieve his sound through volume or reverb or effects or a commitment to dissonance. He achieved it by contrasting the hyper-domestic and the hyper-exotic, leaving the listener feeling caught between these diametrically opposed cultural and emotional reference points. It's the tension between emotional reference points that leaves a listener experiencing new emotions they've never felt before. That's the ultimate compliment a musician can receive- to induce an emotion in someone so distinct from anything they've felt before that they have no word they can think of to describe it. Scott's music has put me in that place routinely for decades." - David Bowie, 2009
Hey, just ran into you while browsing for Scott videos, and I must say yours is among the best encapsulations of his recent work I've encountered. Some of your mannerisms echo my own. When faced with music such as this, what can one say but Wow! I will subscribe now and look forward to more from you. Nice work!
Hey....this is the clip that brought me to your channel Dereck while searching for insights on Scott's later work. Your reaction was so sincere and refreshingly raw. I hadn't realised I'd seen it before till your final word. :) Great stuff.
Dereckvon I discovered your channel this year. I think this is the first video I came across. What's your favorite Bowie track? Or your current favorite Bowie track I mean.
Great review.your honesty reflects the honesty of Scott Walker! Plus everyone loves your review.you seem to inspire others to take a second look.recherche!
Was looking forward to this video! We had the same reaction, when I first put it on Shelly and I were both "WHOA HOLY SHIT, YES!" It's a mind blower, there's so many layers to it, I'm becoming completely obsessed with it. I'd say it's pure living creativity and he's putting all of himself into it. There is a lot to his lyrics and I love the reference points too. It can be surreal but there is so much coherence and order in the chaos too, you know he knows exactly what he is doing.
Dereck, it's a long way down the line since Scott 1! Wow, indeed. I love Scott Walker, but I have struggled with all his releases post Tilt. Thanks for the review. I love the way you embrace new music that went to the wild side.
Same here as an oldie now 71 I was there at the beginning with LOVE HER. played and played his albums 1 to 4. So sad that his God Given talent it gone but thankfully we still have his recordings.
Wow!!!!!!! First hearing of any SW and this has intrigued me more than anything you've talked about in your videos Dereck. I'm a great fan of Mark-Anthony Turnage's music and this reminds me a lot of his jazz/classical style. (Blood on the Floor is one of my favourites.) I will certainly get myself a copy of Bish Bosch for further listening. Thanks for posting.
Among those I know, locally and internationally through the net, I feel in a minority of one, in my appreciation of Scott Walker. I know many others do as well, but if their own experiences are anything like mine it may suggest that we live as the square pegs, 'The sort who listens Scott Walker.' Your review hit it perfectly. Daaaam.
Bloody love your reaction, man. I so appreciate someone prepared to discover something they've not experienced before without coming out with the usual, instant, reactionary insults often so prevalent elsewhere. Thanks so much.
I have only been into Scott's music for a fairly short time, but I've been an avid fan of experimental music for a very long time and my favorite group has been Coil for quite some time, too. Upon hearing songs like Farmer in the City for the first time, I was really taken aback by how incredible Mr. Walker really is. I'm only telling you because I really appreciate this review for what it is, and I agree with you.
Yes Noel Scott Engel originally as a teen idol. Then he joined the walker brothers and Scott Walker. At least one of his post Walker Brother albums was under Scott Engel I think.
The thing i like about him is that his music is unique and there is NO COMPROMISE in it. It's something that needs, time, various listenings, attention and open heart. And an open mind.
Never heared of this man before...but this is probably the greatest way you ended a video, 'have to say im still in the process of going trough all your vids)
The small portion of "Corps de Blah" that plays in your video is only the tip of the iceberg of that particular track too. The String/Guitar portion towards the end is mesmerizing. I had the pleasure of being able to go to the listening party for the album in NYC and they played it LOUD and unapologetically. It was an experience I won't forget.
You know I love Scott Walker, Dereck... but honestly, as much as I appreciate the artistry and vision, it is something that I think I wouldn't be able to enjoy except in small doses... Perhaps this is why the vinyl might be ideal - 15-20 minutes max and then a pause. If I spent 60 minutes with this album, my entire being would be assaulted. People who think music is only a background activity needs to put this on the background and see if that is true.
If anyone needs a reference point as an example of the exact opposite of what the reviewer is describing as honesty vs. dishonesty one need only pick up the new John Cale piece of pop nonsense he released late last year. Love the review and your collection makes me dizzy looking at it. Cheers and subscribed.
Love the comic timing of “wow” just as the sample of the fart gets played
The strings right after are very chilling, though!
Hi I'm...
bub 🍈
I was not expecting to see you here
As a 24 y/o Black man is amazing to see another person of color into Scott Walker. The world seems less empty now!
This could be the best review of a Scott Walker record ever.
This is one of my favourite videos on RUclips.
"I hear nothing but straight reality."
Fucking great.
“I hear nothing but straight reality” really a great description of what Scott is doing here. great review
He continues to be alive and creating in the present moment. Pulling no punches. Very dynamic.

Your enthusiasm makes me want to give these difficult later albums a further listen. Cheers for that!
Time to listen to Bish Bosch again!
Scott IS an enigma explained somewhat here by you... Loved your analysis.
I just found your youtube page. I love your input on the music! Great work! And I love Mr. Walker.
Amazing review, and spot on about the wealth of experience and reflection that leads to musical productions like these. I too agree that there was no bullshit behind what Scott put into the world!
I received a download code from you all yesterday. Thanks so much!

Great Review. You ended it perfectly.
A masterpiece. A deep, innovative, personal piece of art.

Scott waz LIKE FELLINI ON RECORD. NOW REALIZE WHAT HE WAS DOIN. I MISS HIM AND JOHN WITH ALL THE EMOTIONS THEY BROUGHT
Hey....this is the clip that brought me to your channel Dereck while searching for insights on Scott's later work. Your reaction was so sincere and refreshingly raw. I hadn't realised I'd seen it before till your final word. :) Great stuff.
Awesome review .
No chin stroking just what you feel unfiltered and the bit where the fart noises begin is just classic.👍
You are a brilliant man! Thanks for your amazing take.
Good to hear from you. it confirms my feeling that it is important for me to speak up.
hell yeah i feel such a connection to you from this video scott walker is the best
I want to hang out with you in this fantastic den

I struggled and still do with his earlier releases before Tilt.@@beverleyeden1741
A brilliant review of a sublime album.
Your reaction: priceless. Loving your collection in the background. Do you like a lot of other avant-garde music? Are you a Zorn fan?
No doubt. I've shown my Yes collection. I have The Beatles. I know I have a lot of videos but I've answered this question many many times in videos.
Sad, we'll never have a new Scott Walker album again.
Wow!!!!!!! First hearing of any SW and this has intrigued me more than anything you've talked about in your videos Dereck. Love this!! Thank you
Hardcore. We ain't talking the Partridge family.
Hi Dave. I have the dvd, quite well done and super informative. Good to hear from you, friend!
Excellent! Love those shocking reactions toward the end there! It's a masterpiece for sure.
I have only been into Scott's music for a fairly short time, but I've been an avid fan of experimental music for a very long time and my favorite group has been Coil for quite some time, too. Man, I love music like this. It reminds me of Swans (the band, I mean) . I think you summed up the way the album sounds very nicely: "Damn!"
Excellent review of the artistry of Scott Walker on his latest album.
Awesome Dereck! The record sounds fantastic from I hear! Just make sure you go outside today, haha.
Great review, your reaction was similar to mine. I don't know about anyone else, but I found this work more humorous than Tilt or the drift
You have an awesome huge record collection. What genres are you into? Also..what's your system? Turntable, cartridge, amp, speakers etc.
Is that the Scott Walker from the Walker Brothers?
Vince Rotolo yep
Yes Noel Scott Engel originally as a teen idol. Then he joined the walker brothers and Scott Walker. At least one of his post Walker Brother albums was under Scott Engel I think.
Damn it Dereck, looks like i gotta spend 40 bucks! i played TILT at a dinner party many moons ago, never got another invite...TRUE!!
The thing i like about him is that his music is unique and there is NO COMPROMISE in it. It's something that needs, time, various listenings, attention and open heart. And an open mind.
Word to the mutha, River. This is the realness.
The proof is in the hearing. Not for the faint of heart. Good to hear from you, James.
My favorite album by Scott, easily. RIP
Much to check out.
Thank you Dereck! I always enjoy your take on things. I watched you video when Scott passed and really loved your comments
I just saw this for the first time lurking in the back of Rivers box of this years buys. I'm going to have to check it out properly!
Corps de blah is one my favorite songs literally ever
Love this album! Love your reviews....everything you say makes a lot of sense to me
i feel the same way, thanks
Never heared of this man before...but this is probably the greatest way you ended a video, 'have to say im still in the process of going trough all your vids)
Powerful album and I appreciate how it was reviewed. This music isn’t for everyone but Scott constantly evolved.
Masterpiece!
This new album is badass!
"damn!" LOL. This is a great review. Maybe your best.
Dereck! Really enjoyed seeing your reaction to his new album. It's on the very top of my list. 40$!!! Why do they have to do that to us! - Bret
Exactly my point of view: "Damn ! Hell yes!"
"Daaamn." LOL Just received my LP. It's good for me at this time in life.
Great review
The video they've done for Epizootics is fantastic.
Checking it.
My honest reaction.
I don't mind avant garde, but for some reason Walker's music doesn't move me.
You know I love Scott Walker, Dereck... but honestly, as much as I appreciate the artistry and vision, it is something that I think I wouldn't be able to enjoy except in small doses...
