To be honest I'd be very happy if they just went back to the jewel case and supplied a decent booklet, like they used to. I still buy CDs and that would be my preferred packaging. I am very reluctant to buy CDs in a basic cardboard sleeve- like they used to give CDs away for free with newspapers and magazines. For me that is not acceptable. It is still a great format. I used to love vinyl but like most people I eventually moved over to CD many moons ago when the record industry wanted to kill vinyl and promote the then new CD format. I am not going back to vinyl so woud love to see the industry invest more into CDs, like they do in Japan. Not all current CD packaging is bad- like the book format you showed on your video, and many of the box sets are well presented.

Thank you Steve for this awesome video about CD's! My ladyfriend, an ex DJ from Kansas, loves her albums, but no, I dont want any CD's. Seriously? I love vinyl, have around 660, but i have 1200 CD'S. Thanks again Steve! Compact Discs aren't going anywhere, they're here to stay!!!
Yep - simple enough to do that, and it's what record collectors do to look after the cardboard sleeves of their LPs. You either look after your music purchases properly, or you don't, and a pack of clear CD sleeves is much cheaper than buying 50 x 12" record sleeves too.
It looks like the Japanese are leading the charge with new uniform 45 rpm size packaging that gives nice artwork in a size that can be used for display basically to make it look more like an album cover and liner notes you can read.

Very well said. All CD's should return to jewel cases or a hardcase digipack. Too many these days are issued in a flimsy cardboard that look like a carboard CD single and no lyric sheet or photos and I stopped buying new cd's about 3 years ago just due to lack of care of presentation from the record company. All cardboard cd's show wear and tear after a few months, but a jewel case can be replaced if cracked or scratched and looks as good as the day you bought it.

The Japanese have always done things better than anyone else as far as technology goes. Japanese Elvis vinyls are extremely collectable elsewhere - gatefold covers, lyrics to all the songs printed in both Japanese and English - who else does that?! Certain companies are re-issuing Elvis music on both CD and vinyl, and the packaging is mostly okay but sometimes leaves a lot to be desired, as you described - the CD floating freely around in a cardboard sleeve, or even worse 3 CDs laying on top of each other's edges in a so called box set

I don't like the different sizes of CD packaging. I have a good system of storage.....then the jewel cases started disappearing and they don't fit. Don't understand the issue? Imagine each record being slightly different.....not just thicker but taller and deeper. I now i have to have my CDs in 2 different storage systems. 😕 I was looking for a cd the other day, and for a few minutes, I thought I'd misfiled it, then I remembered....it's an irregular shape, so not located I the same place with the rest of the band 🙄
@@paulf.5261 yeah I can relate to that 🤔. So many Elvis releases in single CDs in cardboard or jewel cases, box sets with or without booklets, random sizes...geez, they are all in an untidy pile in a drawer because they don't fit anywhere else🤨
Vinyl has surface noise. It's overpirced now. Try listening to vinyl in your car, traveling, or anywhere outside of the room where you have your turntable.
I love the cardboard cases and having moved back from Vinyl to CD again I'm only interested in buying CDs that come in cardboard. Jewel cases are bulky, and old fashioned.
I am extremely disappointed with artists who allow their labels to release their works in inferior and cheap CD cases! Recommend everyone to ignore these releases completely! Rather, buy CDs from other artists who give us proper packaging and who take their audience seriously! It is clear that there are overpriced vinyl records to be promoted here, but that is not relevant!
I love the early days of CDs. They were minimal and straight to the point presentation. Also these last few years some artists are doing their best for presentation.
When CD'S come onto the scene, I ended up making the mistake of stopping collecting vinyl, I won't make that mistake again, so I continue to collect both formats...when it comes to steaming, call me paranoid, but someone else is holding your product, and I don't like that, I like to own something tangible, instead of ones and zeros on a computer... although if there is one great thing about streaming, it is the way it can help me find my next physical purchase....
How about a large data disc cd/dvd/ blue ray, etc. or online downloads of final mixing board of each track split into separates. 1 track of the normal recording 2nd track just all instruments 3rd track just vocals 4th bass 5th drums...etc... and continue on with everything added....single play, accent instruments as a triangle, cowbell, gong, and chimes could be combined on one track where there is "empty air" space between. I wonder how many vocalists have the courage to try it ?.. Just one song having 10-40 separate tracks would possibly fill the limited space on a regular cd . Mo cd's, mo tracks mo money, maybe ? It would be interesting for that rumored sound story you sometimes hear about where a faint background non-instrument was used or where the lyrics switched or someone fell off their chair.....possibilities ?
I appreciate your enthusiasm and passion for collecting, I'm the same way, but for somebody with a channel about this stuff you really ought to know your terminology my man! The Collin James CD's are known as "Ecopacks" or "Eco Wallets". Yes, they are garbage; akin to paper straws! The Whitesnake CD is a "Double Digipack". Gabriel is a "Digipack". The Maiden is a "Mediabook". WIlliams ones are "Digibooks". I have 15,000+ CD's in my collection. I'll do a video someday about this. Hope that helps for now :)
Part of the problem is that everyone has a different idea of how CDs should be packaged. I personally hate jewel cases and would much rather have a gatefold cardboard cover. In fact, I would hesitate to buy a new release CD if it were in a jewel case or something that uses too much plastic. It just seems tacky and outdated. I guess the ultimate presentation is closer to the Robbie Williams titles you've shown here. They've got the sturdiness of a jewel case but a nicer feel like a vinyl sleeve. And the glossy artwork looks great. Maybe everyone can get behind that. I like those 7" covers, too. Great idea.
Fully agree. At minimum I think all CDs should be released in standard cd jewel case with booklet that includes lyrics. Step up would be a slip sleeve around it. Next steps up would be well designed custom packaging. Not the cheap then stuff as you ere showing. And NEVER just a front back and slit on side for CD where there is not even room to put name on cd the spine. Those are the worst.
I need the tangible item. I started collecting music in 1960 when I purchased my first LP through a magazine ad. Immediately hooked on collecting. '60s was LPs and singles. Then 8-tracks. Then 70s cassettes. The eighties came along with the introduction of the CDs. But early CD releases seemed to be all Classical music. Not my bag. Made the mistake of totally selling the collection. Have spent the last 12 months going from 15 CDs to 1500 CDs in an attempt to rebuild what once was. I loved vinyl because of the presentation (great album covers). But now, LPs unjustifiably are way too expensive. So, for me CDs work great. The downer is digipacks. They're cheap and no excitement. I agree 100% make a better presentation and I'll spend the extra $$ to have it.
Buy, now while you can pick up CDs for next to nothing... Before the turn of the decade they will be just as sought after as vinyl and the prices will be crushing on grail items. Many titles have never had vinyl releases. Niche music had limited runs even on that format. Right now certain cassettes and discs are going for triple figures. Of course packing gimmicks will have their place. But there's stuff you simply can't get unless you buy it on compact disc. Streaming just doesn't cover music on the margins. I kick myself for what I didn't scoop up when prices bottomed out on records (though I never stopped buying wax). I'm not going to make the same mistake on CDs while their worthless. For the right titles, take it to the bank on VHS, DVD etc. too. 'To have and to hold...'.
I don't understand why cds are on the decline, with the big resurgance og vinyle records (& I don't know if they are made any differently from the 80s or beyond when they easily got scratched and had static cling problems dust etc. I agree it will be heart breaking if cds AND DVDs were to dissapear, it could also well be that money itself goes extinct as more & more shops cafes etc only accept cards allready it's the times were living in isnt it?
Streaming won’t last forever 😅😅😅 talking about that’s the future Helll noooo we physical media people keep buying cds 💿 and records and movies to own the music and movies and prices are going higher on streaming Good luck paying higher prices Not to own anything 😅😅😅😅
@@RobertQuant Agreed there are STILL record stores/shops about, such as hmv (although since being bought out they have far less branches & only main stream films & music, little of the older stuff)
I remember picking up some of the metallica remasters at Walmart, they are made cheap and sold for cheap. I think they call them digisleeves. It's a small vinyl record sleeve but the CD is shoved in and gets smudges and probably even scratches. The gatefold art looks terrible because the spine protrudes out, at least they still come with booklets.
I still buy CDs to this day. What I've stopped doing is buying Digi anything; if it doesn't come in a jewel case, it's like the release didn't even exist. Tired of the garbage Digi packaging.
i HATE digipacks >_> the plastic holder for the Discs always comes lose after a few years because the glue, that sticks the plastic to the cardboard, dries out, becomes hard and comes lose. The perfect disc case is really the Super Jewel Case like the ones Super Audio CDs came with. Incredibly sturdy, much thicker and sturdier hinges and overall much nicer for archival purposes and lots of handling. The rounded corners also made it a lot less prone to damages, A digipack is a lot less forgiving towards wear and tear..... Also what still keeps me from buying most modern CD releases is the still omnipresent LOUDNESS WAR insanity. And i certainly won't pay 40-50 or 60 bucks for a freaking Vinyl. As much as i like Vinyl, being able to actually OWN the actual sound imprinted into a grove, without DRM, i simply cannot justify the costs. And i know how good CDs can sound if mastered properly. So i am very picky with what CDs i buy and i often check the Dr. Loudness rating for certain releases to make sure i don't get a dynamic-range reduced "rEmAStEr".
Vinyl is cheaper than it was in the 80s. If you remember. Took weeks to save for a record. My first album in 1976 was $6.00 Australian. With inflation, it’s about the same. Sadly as we get older, we want everything for nothing. No they are not overpriced. I can still buy a $10 album.
ABBA GOLD was $50 & Steve Miller's Greatest Hits was $33 at Wal Mart the last I checked. I can get those for 1 buck or less on used cd or 5 to 7 at Wal Mart if they have them or similar online. Vinyl prices are nuts and I think that's why cd sales are catching up with vinyl already in the UK. I noticed Wal Mart took out over half their vinyl selection here recently!
The myth of vinyl superiority needs to die, as well as the anti-digital smear campaign by hipster vinyl snobs that went along with it. The thing with the CD though is it's nothing more than a physical carrier for a digital audio file and the only real value is having your own copy that isn't stored on anyone else's server and subject to their own whims. Everyone even remotely serious about music should have possession and control of their own copies of the music they love, regardless of the storage medium whether it be a CD, a burned DVD with a hundred songs on it or an artist's entire catalog, an SD card, a SSD drive, whatever. The point should be that you have a copy that no one can take away from you or alter without your consent. The physical carrier of that digital file is not nearly so important as the fact that it is in your exclusive possession and not held hostage to some remote server host somewhere.
I absolutely disagree with you on cd presentation!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE cds that come in mini-lp form. Especially if it is an exact duplicate of the original album. I don't know WHY they didn't come out that way, right from the beginning. I've always hated plastic jewel cases. I buy mini-lps whenever possible.......EVEN IF I ALREADY OWN THE REMASTERED EDITION IN A PLASTIC CASE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't even want to tell you how many times I have bought the entire catalogues of The Beatles, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Jethro Tull, YES and Led Zeppelin - to name a few, just because they were finally put out in paper sleeves. I know, I know - I'm nuts but it's my hobby - I'm a collector.
But make new cd players (affordable without being junk plastic) . Not portable but compact and with good quality of materials (no black plastic please). Let Sony, Yamaha, Pioneer, Sanyo build them. No audiophile but also no plastic garbage.
People saying CDs sound better some people saying WAY BETTER that's not the case though imo. Maybe in 2002 when it was 64bit mp3s but streamed music is in high quality these days isn't it. I like CDs but can't tell the difference between them and high quality streaming which I think is usually 320kb mp3 quality?
U must be young broooo 😅😅😅 streamers just lazyyyyyy and don’t want buy music want everything free Thatz never gonna change Cds 💿 have wayyyy better sound quality than cheap ass streaming Do a comparison yourself if u have good ears 😅
It's sad to see an artist's art coming packaged in some pathetic cheep cardboard slip case. The end user will only end up disregard the music within as being lack luster or bargain-basement garbage on sight, especially when normally that type of sleeve is associated with a cheep give away on the front of some magazine or newspaper.... I hate ordering CDs and then waiting to see if they arrive in some cheap sleeve which hasn't had even the remotest afterthought for presentation, it always makes me feel like I was somehow robbed...

I was looking for a cd the other day, and for a few minutes, I thought I'd misfiled it, then I remembered....it's an irregular shape, so not located I the same place with the rest of the band 🙄
@@paulf.5261 yeah I can relate to that 🤔. So many Elvis releases in single CDs in cardboard or jewel cases, box sets with or without booklets, random sizes...geez, they are all in an untidy pile in a drawer because they don't fit anywhere else🤨
@@Patracat Forgot to say.....silverfish can't get into jewel cases, but they can get into the CDs that don't have them. 🤷♂️🙏
Vinyl has surface noise. It's overpirced now. Try listening to vinyl in your car, traveling, or anywhere outside of the room where you have your turntable.
U are correct, that's why I play CDs and vinyl..u can do both
I love the cardboard cases and having moved back from Vinyl to CD again I'm only interested in buying CDs that come in cardboard.
Great idea.
I still love CDs.
But i don't know why they seem to sound better than streaming!
CD sales have been up for 1 1/2 years in the US & are up this year in the UK!
@@theglavine that's good news then, a relief
Streaming won’t last forever 😅😅😅 talking about that’s the future Helll noooo we physical media people keep buying cds 💿 and records and movies to own the music and movies and prices are going higher on streaming Good luck paying higher prices Not to own anything 😅😅😅😅
@@RobertQuant Agreed
there are STILL record stores/shops about, such as hmv (although since being bought out they have far less branches & only main stream films & music, little of the older stuff)

I prefer the private/underground ART EDITIONS with cd...
Streaming? How about illegal downloading since the late 1990's?!
only - use cd's in the car......6 stacker....
thanks - Sydney oz, find alot very cheap in the charity shops for 50cents now
I agree
I hate digipacks or boxes of CDs because cardboard gets damaged and they dont fit with the rest of my collection on my CD furniture
The high cost of vinyl will be their demise, they shot themselves in the foot. Greed.😢
Its cardboard cover so it will be much cheaper well im thinking it should be . 🤔
what ever happened to glass Cd s ?
I love Colin James.
Its sacds, not cds
But make new cd players (affordable without being junk plastic) . Not portable but compact and with good quality of materials (no black plastic please). Let Sony, Yamaha, Pioneer, Sanyo build them. No audiophile but also no plastic garbage.
People saying CDs sound better some people saying WAY BETTER that's not the case though imo. Maybe in 2002 when it was 64bit mp3s but streamed music is in high quality these days isn't it. I like CDs but can't tell the difference between them and high quality streaming which I think is usually 320kb mp3 quality?
Aren't standard cds 1500 bits? CDs sound way better except when they are overcompressed for 'loudness'.
The end user will only end up disregard the music within as being lack luster or bargain-basement garbage
on sight, especially when normally that type of sleeve is associated with a cheep give away on the front of some magazine or newspaper....
I hate ordering CDs and then waiting to see if they arrive in some cheap sleeve which hasn't had even the remotest afterthought for presentation, it always makes me feel like I was somehow robbed...
No wonder some CDs are very expensive nowadays. It’s all about presentation.
