MY LETTER TO U2-1987 I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono! I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage! I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations. Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year! All the Best! Gary Lagstrom
The one most memorable moment of any of the U2 concerts I have ever been to. 80,000 people at Tampa Stadium in early Dec 1987, everyone singing this song and it kept going well after the boys left the stage. We all sang it as we were walking down the steps to leave. It was an absolute spiritual experience that I will never forgot. To have that many people all on the same thought at one time was awesome!
I saw them earlier on this tour. Saw them in '85 for the UF tour. Both times "40" ended the shows like this. People kept singing "How long...." as they filed out into the halls and escalators. Saw them four additional times on various legs of the ZooTV tour. Bono touched my hand as he reached into the crowd from the B stage singing Until The End Of The World. Some of my best concert memories. God Bless, all. Peace and love.
Before we were married, my husband had a late night shift at our college radio station and he would play this song for me. She would simply say, “This is for Lisa”. Oh my heart.
If I didn’t know Bono was a famous rocker I’d have thought he was a street preacher. He’s one of the few singers who incorporates Christian elements in his music that actually moves a heathen like me to tears.
Repent, Confess your sins to Jesus, Accept Him as Lord and Saviour over your life. He WILL change that hardened Heart of stone and bring new life and Peace and Joy to you. I spent so long running from him. I am His.

The song title refers to Psalms 40. But it could also refer to the amount of times I've listened to this non-stop. Just can't get enough of this awesome performance of the song. Thanks to the uploader for sharing this rare gem.
For Christmas season⛄🎄... ...I waited patiently for the Lord, and He inclined to hear my cry, and He lifted me up out of the muddy pit, out of the miry clay, He set my feet upon a rock, and made my footsteps firm, and He whispered a new song into my ear, Many will see, many will see and fear...Psalm #40... "40", by U2., Live. An uplifting, beautiful song originally from the "War" album in 1983 inspired from the 40th Psalm from the Bible, with lead singer Bono inserting snippets of 1984's Band Aid fundraiser song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and also from 1984 "We Are The World" from U.S.A. for Africa between the chorus. From Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, Arizona, December 20th, 1987. Irish rock band U2's last song of the set of the last show of the legendary Joshua Tree Tour in one of the outtakes/deleted scenes of the music documentary "Rattle and Hum" (1988). This song was U2's familiar last song of their live concert sets for many years. Notice however that during their performance Adam Clayton, the bass guitar player, and The Edge, (Dave Evans) the lead electric guitar player, switch instruments, as Adam plays electric guitar and The Edge plays an unusual six-string bass guitar (as most bass guitars only have four strings). The band members each individually fade out from the stage as the song comes to a close until only the drummer, Larry Mullen Jr. Is left on the high-riser with his signature Yamaha-brand drum set... Stay and enjoy Larry Mullen Jr.s mean, kick-ass drum solo at the end, as the Tempe, Arizona concert audience sing in unison in the star-filled desert night sky the "40" chorus...
This is the best rendition of 40 I’ve ever seen. I love how he works in the verses from feed the world and we are the world and also gives a number of hallelujahs that are right in line with the meaning of the song. Also very cool how he changes the lyrics at the start to say: more like the Lord waited patiently for me. The music in this version is also great and the energy in the arena is incredible. I also love the helicopter or blimp view of the crowd still singing after the concert has ended… that Birdseye view is amazing.
First concert I ever went to. This was opening night of their Joshua Tree tour. They were on the verge of becoming a household name. This was at the ASU basketball arena. I was 15. Lone Justice opened for them this particular night. A little over a year later, they ended their American tour at sun devil stadium which became the backdrop for rattle and hum.
Nope nope nope , you are wrong this is not the opening night of the Joshua Tree tour. This is the last show of the USA Joshua Tree tour. They started at ASU and ended at ASU. These last two shows the 19th and 20th of December 1987 were fundraisers the money was used to get our racist governor impeached.

Dana D they’ve always switched their instruments for 40 except the few times it was played on PopMart.
They always do it
This show, 5 days before Christmas, was the very last gig on the 9 month long Joshua Tree tour. This is the very last song, it must have been a weird feeling knowing it's all coming to an end after this.
Adam on the guitar what a great vid
i have seen u2 9 times over the course of several tours..i have yet to hear this one live in person...guess i will keep waiting!!
sorry, my comment above came before i finished hearing this version for the first time ever...HOLY SHIT its really good...
Love Larry’s shirt. San Diego, CA 🙏❤️😎
Thanks for the moment
I used to have 2-3 vas tapes that were a mix of Rattle and Hum outtakes, as well as a load of audio tapes form this tour, I know that this was at least one of the cassettes I had. So good.
Nothing is forever except the Word of G-d. The man who views the world the same at forty as he did at twenty has not grown at all. Muhammad Ali. 1987 Forty in Tempe to 2005 Forty in Chicago.
It truly is Larry's band
Perfeita harmonia entre fé, arte e homem 🙏❤️🎶🎵Bono Vox love love.
Fantastico il video il brano......ma soprattutto l'anno.....anni indimenticabili anni indelebili.
Larry's improvised moment at the end! Rocked it!

HOW LONG TO SING THIS SONG…HOW LONG TO SING THIS SONG…HOW LONG…HOW LONG…HOW LONG…TILL JESUS COMES AGAIN…AND TAKES US HOME!
edge good bassman on this song!!!!!!!!!!!!great
Adam really having fun with that whammy bar...
We would walk home from the bars in college and someone would break into the How Long refrain.... what a time the later 1/2 of the 1980's was. I tried the refrain walking out of work recently. I just got puzzled looks 😞
It was never performed better live than at red rocks. That version was raw and passionate, as never before or Since , didnt have Bono throwing in extrs words or speeches, just pure emotion ❤❤
thanks thanks thans where this come from,,,u2 still perfect why not enter to dvd from ratlle,,loves u2 ever from portugal
