U2 - Silver And Gold (Live Rattle And Hum)

- Опубликовано: 12 сен 2011
- "Silver and Gold" was written in support of the Artists United Against Apartheid project, which protested the South African apartheid. The song was originally featured on the project's 1985 album, Sun City, performed by Bono with Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones. It was re-recorded by U2 for the single while the band returned to Dublin during in May 1987 during a break between the first and second legs of The Joshua Tree Tour. The song was described by Musician as "tough and raw, with Bono in husky and confident voice, underpinned by a sinuous bass line, and with The Edge demonstrating his newfound prowess in blues-based guitar. "Silver and Gold" was played live on The Joshua Tree Tour several times, one performance of which was featured on the band's 1988 album and rockumentary, Rattle and Hum. Both the studio recording and the Sun City versions were later featured on the bonus disc of the 20th anniversary edition of The Joshua Tree. The studio version was also included on the limited edition B-sides bonus disk of the band's first compilation album, The Best of 1980 - 1990.

Edge plays the guitar like no one else. Awesome.
OK EDGE...PLAY THE BLUES 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
In 1987-1989 the world had never seen a band like U2

@@kubarozpruwacz5947the ZooTV was like nothing that had come before it was groundbreaking. I was the St Patrick’s Day concert in the old Boston Garden in 1992 and to say it was stunning is an understatement. Never seen or heard anything like that before. And the outdoor leg of ZooTv, particularly Europe\ Australia was again, like nothing else in concert. Those were the days. I’ve seen videos of the Vegas Sphere concerts, with NotLarry on drums, and I’m not impressed.
@@ObamaFromKenyaI should have said 92/3 really because of the Zooropa tour and their album of 91 that promoted this tour Achtung Baby I’d never heard anything like it pre 91 or after it post 91
U2 at their prime.
Edge kills it in this version! that solo is INSANE!
Ok Edge, play the blues.....
+lukin manetti searing guitar "solo" ...no drama--just lights it up.
Sick.
Insane genius! F***ing great!
It makes me euphoric just watching it. I can't imagine how The Edge felt playing it.
OK Edge play the blues !!!!
Now it's ok, 15 year old kid, come on stage with your iPhone and watch us play. Times, and U2, have changed.
For years I had sworn it was "ok, Edge, make a move".
Annnnnd, it’s the furthest thing from the blues.
If blues is a feel this little solo def hits the feels!
YES! AM I BUGGIN U? I DIDN'T MEAN TO BUG YA OK EDGE!
Those shots of Edge, Bono, and Adam moving to the beat at the same time is fucking great!
adore ♥ 💯 👍🏼 🙂
Yes
And that wasn't scripted it was pure love of music.
I have no fuckin idea why everyone gives rattle and hum album no luv. Fuck u pricks. This is one great album imo
That bassline.
Tim Wightman they’re all feeling it
I still remember when my father showed me this DVD, I was about 6-7 years old, now I'm 16 and I'm proud to listen to U2 every day, I thank my father for introducing me to them, always full of nostalgia and joy to see this live again
im the exact same as you, we would listen to these songs on DVD when i was younger in the car, Im now 15 and love these songs
1@@static3032b2t
@@static3032b2t beautiful, for me it was a bit of a discovery because I am Italian and U2 was not very well known, however they had a nice musical reputation here (after the success of Rattle And Hum they became very famous also in italy)
My father, peace be upon him; showed me this in 2015-6. I never thought much of it, because 'Joshua Tree's was my deal. He passed away last November. I have the DVD laying ⁵' away. ❤
@@user-tt4yi7zr4r i'm very sorry for your loss, my deepest condolences. Remember that he will always love you, wherever he is ❤️
Everytime when I hear this song Im almost reduced to tears because then I was accused of listening to white peoples music by my black brothers here in South Africa. I tried invain to explain the lyrics or mesaage behind the songs. Even now maybe only 1% of black activists know about U2, Peter Gabriel, Annie Lenox, Midnight Oil etc. However we the informed few will always feel indebted to Bono and the boys.
Very nice to read your words and carry on spreading the message. There's a lot of joy in the music of U2 with some soul too.
You should ask the brothers whether they will use devices such as CT Scan, X-ray, Pacemaker made by whites?
Thank you for spreading your message. On a spiritual level, it reduces me to tears that the presence of apartheid and its consequences linger, but it is just as devastating that this evil has destroyed so much of the human spirit that the medium of music, which many musicians and listeners agree carries a powerful ingredient to bring people together and to heal strife with peace, has fallen victim in this awful battle. It is awful that some have experienced ostracism so strong that this poison has led them to denounce music with a genuinely benevolent message, such as Bono, Gabriel, Lenox, Sting, Creed, Van Halen (for those who will disagree with the latter, I'm referring to the song "Dreams" from their 1986 album, "5150." In 2002, I had the opportunity to sit 8 feet away from South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu when he visited my law school to discuss what he believed was the United States' appropriate position in response to apartheid. It was wonderful. His closing message, which he repeated four times, was "Family! We are...Family! Family!" His eyes just gleamed with goodness. He was fatherly. Your country must be blessed with his influence; he is controversial but he and Mandela put a very bright, global, spotlight on the problem, and DeKlerk, when that needed to happen. I would politely suggest sharing a version of "Silver and Gold" that has Bono's speech: I have not yet listened to this clip but, on the original, 1990 "Rattle & Hum" CD, lead singer Bono goes BEYOND the message of the song, and, during a moment when the band quiets down to let Bono talk, he personally delivers a very direct message to aggressively confront, and eradicate, apartheid. It's a tall order that is not entirely realistic on the horizon, but Bono's strategy is realistic: confront political leaders with facts and force them to advocate for policy that achieves this goal. Bono used the tactic in Washington, D.C. He met with Bill Clinton at length; no substance came from it, but politicians knew that he could shine a bright spotlight on them. ultimately, he stopped, and he disappointed me. But, here, listen to Bono ramp it up, and end with "Join with Archbishop Desi Tutu and his fight against aparthei-EED!" He deliberately extends the "e" vowel and raises his pitch to amplify the word). The crowd goes crazy. My bet is that, among those who shamed you, the majority will be intelligent enough to see through the bullshit and recognize the benevolence for what it is. God bless you.
Wish Bono could comment about the reverse apartheid we are experiencing now...
SPOT ON!
One of the best bass lines ever ....!
Agree.
Good old days when U2 was U2.
Back when they opposed apartheid, unlike now....
May you rest in peace and equality in heaven Bishop Tutu. Bono brought attention to the masses about apartheid. That was over 30 years ago. We still have the same shit happening all over the globe. Even here in the USA. It's disgusting. Hopefully God will send his angels, we sure could use them here right now.
I was at the show, and I am waving my denim shirt that I wore to the show-bought a t-shirt as soon as I got inside! I feel lucky to have seen them at this point in their career!!
Rattle And Hum is such a good movie. Its A Musical Journey.
Not JUST a musical journey. But a POWERFUL, TIMELESS, ETERNAL EDUCATION. And it continues. THAT'S why these songs by the boys are timeless and eternal, until Jesus returns and straightens all this crap out.
Never get tired of watching this. Each member of U2 are on fire !
+marshalloneill yeah, the interpretation is amazing, totally into it, totally living it, awesome. lol
Running on all cylinders 😮
To me, this is music history at its best.
Christ. Listening to Edge's guitar chorus at 5.38 still sends me thrills along the spine like 35 years ago. ''Ok Edge Play the Blush....'' says Bono....well....these were magical moments worth living.a million....
Play the blues..

There is no greater sound in the world than The Edge letting rip with a MONSTER guitar solo like this! What a true guitar legend! #TheEdge #SilverAndGold #U2 🤘🏻
Edge play the blues Brilliant.
The greatest mic drop in history @ 5:44
I've watched this countless times and never noticed that. Cool. That provides more intensity to the subject. I like it even more now. Thanks.
Ok Edge, play the blues.. and Edge hits the sky 🌌
Old good blues, old good U2... Best ever! This music never dies! This music lasts forever! Genuine music!
hit where it hurts........for silver & gold.....
I was twenty when this came out , loved this song and the album
I used to listen to this and the entire video every single day when I was a kid.
ricardo escalona garza me too! Well, my parents would rent it from Blockbuster but we owned the cassette.
OK Edge play the Blues…What a JAM!
Man, Edge on the guitar wounds like a bullet here. And Adam on bass is ominous. Equal to his bass on Bullet the Blue Sky Rattle and Hum live at Sun Devil Stadium Tempe Arizona. Though there, Adam is like a heartbeat under INTENSE pressure and stress, like staring at the face of death itself.
U2 just a awesome band. I love this song. I don’t mean to bug you. Edge play the blues. What a Band!!!
"Broken back to the ceiling
Broken nose to the floor
I scream at the silence, it's crawling
It crawls under the door
There's a rope around my neck
And there's a trigger in your gun
Jesus say something
I am someone, I am someone
I am someone"
That can fucking hurt your soul
It definitely does!
I love his speech and his lovely Irish cadence
I was 12 year's old.In 1988.
This is my favorite song from U2.
My U2 fav. Each member of the group at his top. "Edge, play the blues"... Perfect, period.
I love this song featured in Rattle And Hum.
Lyrics are so raw.
When I was 14, first heard this tune,I could not understand English that much.
Now 30 years have passed, and I can understand every inch of this lyric.
Blow my head off.
Cruel realities are dipicted in every verses.
Absolutely Master piece.
play the blues ,edge you nailed it
This song drums , makes you bend at the knees...I've never seen the band rock so hard to a beat
the unforgettable percussion !
one of their best songs. the bass nails it hard
Had this album in my headphones for two years. Wore the tape transparent and then bought another copy. Absolute class this gig.
raw talent personified.....damn so much talent in this performance
The Edge is THE BOSS... Love him.
Bono´s voice here sounds so raw
the edge ... unmistakeable :D
When the speech is part of the song, it is amazing.
Absolute!!!!!!!!!!
Bono giving the education and the edge playing the blues . 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Once again in 2021 the song of South Africa !
One of my favorite songs for sooo many years!!!!! U2 Rocks!!!!!

Back when they cared about oppression
Hey U2 thank you for all your great songs when i listen to your songs and lyrics I fly and feel good:) just wonderful creations u do Bono and U2 Band:)
best U2 song ever written
The edge and adam are on 🔥 ❤
In the 80's, Rod Stewart, Queen, Elton John etc. were happy to play in Apartheid South Africa. But while Nelson Mandela was imprisoned by its Fascist white government , U2 stood almost alone in highlighting the injustice. Bravo Boys! Listen up kids, this is what Rock n Roll is all about.
Clyde Van der Walt Bophuthatswana is how you spell it.
+Tonyo1221 and still the best band ever u2,,boys we love you ,the 80,s the best bands ever but u2 its u2,loves from portugal u2 ever

HERE YS AN OLD KID, SAYING, IF WE GOT A GLOBAL PROBLEM, SOLVE THE ADEPTION FOR FREE, AND RAISE SOME TAX, SO FINALLY WE AGREE????
Costa del Artlepool of course not and I’m a huge u2 fan
Little teen me LOVED this and I still do especially Bonos solidarity with the people of South Africa." A man who is sick of looking down the barrel of white South Africas gun ...a man who is ready tontake up guns against his oppressers" - back then this was talking big time straight.
You know, all togeher from the start, this is one of favorite bands. Top 3 of all times for me
First time I saw this movie was circa 1990 a load of us nicked off school and went round some rich kid’s house, with a load of booze.
He had a massive TV with Technics surround (rare at the time) and he put this on LOUD!
And best of all, we never got caught! 😃
One of the best concerts that i had ever seen. Got lucky because i was at the movie premiere in Hollywood. I was only a few feet away from the band when they did a surprise mini concert on the street.
Que recital por Dios! Los U2 estaban inspiradisimos! Dichosos los q estuvieron ahi viendolos!
The Edge is a massively underrated guitarist 🎸
EVH is a 1000x better!

Abso freaking lutely. This and Bullet the Blue Sky.
THE BASS!
I’ve always loved the rage Bono puts into the word APARTHEID !!!
PIGGS
I reckon this is one of the best performances U2 ever did live, definitely top 5
Bono's words have had the greatest and meaningful influence on my life in the early 80ties when I was a boarding school student. Definitely it was this song that influenced me the most when I was smoking weed while dreaming about the future. I enjoyed that song often at the beginning of a weed night :-) inline with the feeling of a rising heartbeat, like the accelerating speed of a night express leaving a city before a long journey into the night. A dream. I am close to 50 now and looking back to great memories with U2.
Revisit with LSD. ✌🏻💚
@@JButt- Muahahahahahaha :-) That made my day!
Methinks this track would be far, far to heavy for LSD.
ooh yeah, hmmmm that sweet delicious bass
anyone go and see it in the cinema?

Ahh. Those college days....
Philip Workman I did
Crackling with lyricism, passion, and frenetic energy U2 captured at their musical peak!
Amen.

"A" peak indeed but they've had at least a few "peaks"!!
This is Adam and Larry at their absolute best...
Another fantastic track from U2 this one reminds me of my visit to Dublin seems there's a place for every U2 track thanks again I love it
edge plays the blues.......amazing
Ok Edge, play the Blues🔥🎶🎸
I loved this movie and soundtrack!!! This song is awesome!!
me too
Time heals all wounds, I guess. Not sure how many of U2's younger fans realise how much the band was raked over the coals as self-indulgent for this film when it was current in 1988. It's certainly held up quite well, though.
Great film about a great band, they were peaking on this US tour
@@TomKnight1000 It was great being able to watch this movie when it hit the theaters. There was a college paper giving out free posters in the insert and a friend of mine and I took about 100 of those posters. He put his all over his wall...it looked good so I gave him mine to put up. Those were the days.

The very best of U2 song !
“Even his mother calls him THE EDGE!!!” - Bono

The answer to everything is STYLE. U2 have it.
Welcome to U2's peak.

Not necessarily. This was certainly the last of "classic U2", or, U2: 1.0.
They've fully re-invented themselves at least twice since this and still managed to keep the Biggest Band On The Planet title each time.
Correct. The third peak is "The Unforgettable Fire". 1984-1989 is their best era.
Powerful song, like many other songs from U2,
she carry a powerful and hidden message,
the one who has sense would understand...
fkn brilliant still to this day

This rules rock 'n roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
" Ok Edge , make the blush" 😍
And Adam Clayron line of bass is Great and deep 🎸🤩
The words of that song , intense .
Rattle and Hum is a Great album of U2, even if in 1988, the early fan were surprised and confused because of the blues, the roots of rock'n'roll music 🎙
Timeless 🎶
Great song...and unlike so many celebrities today, Bono knows when he's agitating..."don't mean to bug ya' " he keeps doing his thing, but maintains a respectful stance, and just entertains. Great man.
Blues is so important to all post-blues pop music - no one has done it like U2 in this phase - not even them- just a magic period of songs taking things to another global level -with roots all the way down to the OG blues artists they loved.
Great bass lines!
Enquanto Bono declama versos,dá a impressão de que está segurando uma fera selvagem,a guitarra de Edge.Quando diz "Ok Edge play the blues",parece que esta fera é solta e nada e nem ninguém consegue segura-la.
"....see them little blue uniforms. See them bright an' shiny things..... The prizefighter in the corner is told "hit where it hurts. Silver & gold....."
Sure ? I always understood 'See the Navy blue uniform...'
But thanks for the 'prizefighter in the corner' - at least I got that point now !
Fantastic !!!!!!!!
Few realize how much the drum and bass played into the success of this band, not to take anything away from the front men, but there is such a solid back beat.
Such Brilliant Guitaring!!!
