  • In this video I share my review of Oblivion, a Bolliger & Mabillard Dive Coaster located at Alton Towers in Staffordshire, UK. Oblivion opened in 1998 as the world's first vertical drop roller coaster with a 180ft drop into a huge hole! Along with giving an in-depth review of the ride I also share facts about Oblivion mixed in with a variety of on and off ride footage!

This was the first big roller coaster I had the guts to go on! It was a school trip at the end of year 7 and had spent the day with my long-suffering friend on kids’ rides. I came to the conclusion that, even if I was terrified out of my mind, I wasn’t going to die, and I had to at least go on one big ride before I went home 😜 that was the beginning!

As someone who suffers from acrophobia I really found it intense the very first time I rode Oblivion just because of that slow chain pull and hold! So it's extra thrilling for me lol, fantastic ride.

I've loved Oblivion ever since it opened, even though I'm filled with dread every time I queue up for it 😂 I've always wondered what it would look like if it was above ground, I'd love to see how high it would have been, although it would probably look too scary haha! P.s. love your channel! ❤

This was our first go on a ‘proper’ grown up coaster, just a couple of days ago. We will certainly remember it! Seems like a special ride, the whole package from the approach to the queue is cleverly designed to ratchet up the tension, but you’re not really aware of the ‘theatre’ till after the event so it’s very well done. I managed to keep my eyes open the second time! Brilliant ride, and it’s always going to be intense!

My favourite part is the older trains. Yes they aren't floorless, but they feel heavier (they probably are) and that's why the ride feels different to the more modern ones. It has more of an out of control sensation, and it's a lot more forceful in my opinion

Tbh B&M dive coasters with an 87.5 degree drop still feels fully vertical when you drop, even if it isn't fully 90 degrees. And you can see that B&M has really improved on their dive coaster model since 1998, since the debut of many of their dive coasters in North America and the rest of Europe within the past decade.

Yeah, it's a great coaster. Since it's so much more simple than the other Dive Machines (not that I've ridden any of them), I imagine it might be in the lower tier of Dive Machine rankings but as an overall experience - the build-up, the theming, the underground tunnel - this is probably better than a lot of the others.

I agree with you regarding the bar at the front of the shuttle. Always makes me feel like it wouldn't be enough to stop me from falling if the restraints gave way, similar to Titanic when they're using the rail intended for another purpose as the ship gets inverted.

  • @myles8328
    @myles8328 3 года назад

Agree totally on all your points in this great review vlog Shawn. I experienced Oblivion in 1998 ... I was 22 (!) and I can still remember my Mum’s colourful language as we got to the top of the drop. In 1998 UK there were no drops this intense (Big One was fast and often a touch painful but never intense) and before that, Missile at American Adventure was the scariest ride around, really. I’ve been lucky enough to try Sheikra in Busch Gardens and whilst the drop is bigger, it doesn’t feel that way and the inversion doesn’t add hugely to overall experience. It’s a ride, not an experience.
Oblivion, especially in the early days but more recently after it got a bit of TLC, got everything right. Rather than be fun, it was designed to scare you from the moment you saw it, and that queue line ramped up the fear wonderfully. The whole aesthetic of black and orange and the wonderful (and very different!) merchandise ... and the rush you still get from it was just so euphoric.
I love the front row especially with those rails because I am tall enough that I can put my feet on them - which makes it feel like you’re on a standing drop tower, even better with your hands in the air.
I guess rather than extend the ride, an upgrade to the queue with some walk-through pre-show might be good, but it does a very good job as it is. Certainly an improvement Fantasy World ...

The only two B&M Dive coasters I've ridden are Valravn and Oblivion. If I prefer Valravn it's because of the more complete layout, but NOT because of the drop, since despite my age I usually prefer Vest restraints to OTSRs, with dive coasters I prefer OTSRs because dive coasters hold the guest still over the drop so they won't get violent ejector airtime anyway, so 1: the OTSRs won't hurt and 2: they'll provide more airtime. With any other coaster model I'd probably prefer vest restraints to OTSRs. In conclusion: Whilst I prefer Valravn to Oblivion: the drop of Oblivion is better. It's also got the world's deepest coaster tunnel. Thanks for posting!

Oblivion was the ride that got me over my fear of roller coasters. Queued up, got strapped in, scared myself to death and then I have ridden the adrenaline rush since then. Now I judge coasters on whether they'll be painfull to ride (eg. Grand National at Blackpool) rather than being scary.

Apparently there's technical/safety implications which prevent dive coasters from being 90°. While I can't fault the build up and dive aspect of the coaster. My main complaint about it is how long it takes to disembark from the ride when it arrives back at the station. I do think after Thirteen, Oblivion should be the next ride on the chopping block.

First rode in 2021 and I agree that the front is the best row. I think its a good ride but personally I wouldnt queue over 45 mins for it because of it’s length.

I first went to Alton Towers when I was 11 and was absolutely petrified of Oblivion more than any other ride, I refused to ride it (2013, just before the Smiler opened), now I love it and the feeling it gives on the way down!

Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure oblivion actually has thicker track than other B&m coasters because they underestimated the forces of the ride

My Mum would never go on any thrilling coaster but he favourite coaster ever is Oblivion 😂😂

  • @Tom-dz5vi

Oblivion doesn’t go down 180 feet. Judging by time filmed with acceleration taken into account, as well as different angles of the ride studied, it does not go down 180 feet. With only a 65 foot height you would have to drop underground 115 feet (35 metres) which it simply doesn’t. The drop may last 180 feet but even that I find it hard to believe judging by the speed you go down and re-emerge at. The distance just isn’t far enough and the speed wouldn’t maintain so well on the exit without the g force being much much higher as it would snap up instead of gradually going up.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! A huge portion of the drop is underground, more than people realise!

It may be a one trick pony, but it's my favourite one trick pony. It actually beats a lot of fan favourite coasters for me and is in my top 10 coasters in the UK. Love that drop.

I like it best on the very side, there’s not track bellow you end there’s a great near miss. + it pulls the most G’s of any dive coaster

It's grown on me oblivion has it's an alright ride I just wouldn't que more than 20min for but still a good ride I'm the only one who loves it that you can hear people screaming just get replaced by that anonymous noise of the train going through the tunnel
