  • Today’s guest on Danger Close is retired admiral and New York Times bestselling author James Stavridis.
His 2021 bestselling geopolitical thriller titled 2034: A NOVEL OF THE NEXT WORLD WAR is best described as a cautionary tale of speculative fiction.
During his 37-year military career, Admiral Stavridis earned more than 50 medals, including 28 from foreign nations.
From 2006-2009 he served as Commander of the U.S. Southern Command, and from 2009-2013 he served as the Supreme Allied Commander for the NATO Alliance, overseeing global operations in Afghanistan, Libya, the Balkans, and Syria.
Following his time in the military he served as the Dean of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
Admiral Stavridis holds a PhD in international relations, is a senior executive at the global investment firm The Carlyle Group, is an author, speaker, contributing TIME Magazine editor, and is the Chief International Security Analyst for NBC News.
In his latest work, The Sailor's Bookshelf: Fifty Books to Know the Sea, Admiral Stavridis examines dozens of books “that illustrate the history, importance, lore, and lifestyle of the oceans and of those who ‘go down to the sea in ships.’”
You can follow him on Twitter @stavridisj and you can learn more about his work at admiralstav.com.

Lol... Just like me, too! But today, situation in the international politics arena drastically changed. Now we're living after the February 24 of 2022 World. When Russians marched into the Ukraine!... And because of that, political equation drastically changed for the US and Western World; and I wonder what would the Admiral said about this one?

1 in 4 deaths today is a veteran. That will likely change to 1 in 5 soon since the WW11 vets are going to be all gone around 2032. There might be 250,000 left. I meet some of them every month in my hospice work and I am totally in love with their stories and the chance I get to listen to these great Americans. It won't last long, maybe you should get acquainted with the Hospice agencies near you and volunteer some of your time so that you can collect up some of these stories.

Very enjoyable podcast and I'll probably listen again. A wealth of experience and a long career.
I got a couple of head scratchers from this guy. First was when his immediate response to the question of Benghazi. He almost immediately passed the buck and the responsibility to another commander. While that may technically be true, there was a lot of information in that particular denial. I absolutely don't know the details of what was happening at the moment, but I do know that he was in a position to that might have changed the outcome.
Next was his very obvious effort to ride the fence between the political left and right in the modern day. One side is pushing to silence the other. One side is ignoring riots, by calling them "Mostly Peaceful" protests. Unfortunately the other side is laying down and showing their belly in an effort to appear cooperative.
All that being said. Very good podcast and I'm certain I'll be listening again.
Fun note ... I was mounting a head on a tomahawk while listening. Love what you do Jack.

Regardless of the admiral's political views but Libya was not his direct responsibility he oversees NATO operation. Benghazi was not a NATO mission, as he said it was directly under the American government not NATO. Benghazi responsibility under the U.S. North American command which General Hamm was commanding officer. General Hamm did order rescue mission which was counter order by White house and State department.

Shout outs to Arden Anderson 1st cavalry. He was a long range expert and taught me many things related to shooting at distance and hunting. He was in vietnam from a small coal mining town in Pennsylvania and just passed a few weeks ago. Fought Agent Orange for a long time. Blown out of a building and had leg issues. One of the hardest men I ever met and will greatly miss hearing his experiences in combat as a young man.

@Jon Little OP said the Admiral never took up a rifle in battle. TRUTH. Said ribbons for admin jobs. TRUTH. You say he served honorably. TRUTH.
See how that works? Different perspectives can both be TRUTH at the same time. Senior commanders are supposed to be REMFs; see Russian commanders KIA’d in Ukraine for the reason why.
Ok, REMF may not be totally fair for a destroyer flotilla commander, but 7000+ ton USN ships are hardly in any real danger in any conflict dating back to Korea. TRUTH.

This is very biased, ignorant, and counterproductive behavior on my part, I fully admit that. I gave the very best parts of my life in service to this country, and having to watch it tore down and reshaped has made me a bitter and angry man. I hate it!
