      @Alex_Shishkin_1962 Год назад

      Re: the part that deals with war in Ukraine.
      I'd say that Zeihan over-emphasizes the theory of Russia seeking some kind of 'defensible frontier'. From historical documents, Russian/Soviet expansions of the past were driven mostly by an easily recognizable 'every land grab adds value to the empire' theory of imperial governance which was pretty much universal across the world until 19th Century. And current Russian leadership is no exception: they are illiterate in the field of modern tech, and still believe more land and more people to be the only and ultimate measure of greatness.
      Also, I'd discount at least a little bit Zeihan's demographic conclusions: Russian demography does mean their population will be dwindling for the foreseeable future, but Russians becoming extinct is not in the cards any time soon.
      Other than this, yes, what he has said is valid, IMO.

    • @lucasgrey9794
      @lucasgrey9794 Год назад +5

      @@Alex_Shishkin_1962 Nothing Zeihan says is valid. He thinks Mao did One Child Policy. Mao died years before it was developed.
      Russia doesn't want the Russian population in Donbass to be ethnically cleansed in the manner that the Serbian population of Kosovo was.

    • @Alex_Shishkin_1962
      @Alex_Shishkin_1962 Год назад

      @@lucasgrey9794 Yawn. Pull another one. Russian population in Donbass was never in any danger of being ethnically cleansed. This sob story is, in its entirety, Russian propaganda. Most of Eastern Ukraine outside of Donbass has similar percentages of ethnic Russians living there, and nowhere under Ukrainian control has anything remotely resembling ethnic cleansing taken place. In fact, ethnic Russians are fighting in Ukrainian military now and have been, since the previous Russian land grab in 2014. And not just draftees, either: they are plentiful among volunteers, as well.
      P.S. Chinese policy of limiting the birth rate started under Mao. Yes, while he was alive it was a limit of 2 kids per family, and an encouragement to marry later in life, but he clearly was the person who got the ball rolling. So even here you don't really know what you are talking about.

    The passage where Peter Zeihan "predicted the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the very month in his book the Accidental Superpower" states that Russia will make a move before 2020, not in February of 2022. So, 1. He was wrong. 2. If you want to say he still predicted it happening, many did after Crimea, just ask Ukrainans or east Europeans, many were waiting for it to happen.
    I wish he corrected the podcaster about the "down to the specific month" comment, that was not a good look.

    I'm a fan of Peter's work but his take on electric vehicles is incomplete. Half of Tesla's cars use LFP batteries, not NCA batteries. LFP batteries don't use any nickel or copper, they are mainly lithium and iron, two of the most abundant elements on Earth. With technological advancements, LFP batteries or some other non-rare earth mineral intensive batteries could become the norm. Tesla is also developing a drive unit that does not use any rare earth minerals, though they did not provide details on this during their last investor day presentation so I am a bit more skeptical about this claim. There are a lot of other issues I have with EVs, but rare earth minerals is one that could be overcome quite easily with technological advancements.

      Also regarding this comment. "Tesla is also developing a drive unit that does not use any rare earth minerals, though they did not provide details on this during their last investor day presentation so I am a bit more skeptical about this claim."
      I'm very skeptical of the claim that the drive train can be made without rare-earth elements. I'm not aware of a permanent magnet worth putting in an EV that works without rare-earth elements.

    The cynic in me says that if a clever man set out to sell a ton of books, a great way to do it would be to assemble the facts in a way that provides a tremendously optimistic view of the future for the target audience. But, props to Peter for being one of only a few folks that put themselves out there and make anything clear. Imagine hearing anything like this from MSM.

    Whether left or right the US is on a bad path. Political manipulation will be our end. The one issue that this cast didn’t address is what globalism plays in dismantling everything just said.

    Peter is too optimistic about the US. We have a skilled labor shortage and a soon to happen population crunch. The US economy can't run on a bunch of people trading cheeseburgers.Look at the current state of the bureaucracy, 13 years in that and it was intel, and you couldn't pay me enough to deal with that crap again let alone go to the MIC as I was supposed to do by some logic of the admin class. When defense contractors start offering bonuses for signing on without a clearance, you know its bad.

      Peter is accounting for all the issues you mentioned. The US will not collapse because it is completely self reliant.
      There will be uncomfortable moments for the US but that is nothing like what most of the world will experience.

      If you don’t mind me asking, what caused you to hate working in intelligence so much? I’m considering a career in it, so I would be interested in hearing your thoughts.

      And academia, government and business all have a kakistocratic obsession with hiring far left ideological DIE/ESG box checking idiots and actively expelling whoever can actually think. Besides the damage that the resulting hard left lurch has done and is doing, it means that a vast number of complex systems are only one perturbation away total collapse.
