I'm loving my Tank Commander. Just grabbed it out of the box and unscientifically went to town. Took it to a match dominated by striker fired pistols and left with a smile on my face.
My first and unfortunately my only 1911 (so far) is a Tisas one just like that, but the gov't size. I did not want to spend a lot for the first one. Wow, this was so worth it. About $420 and well worth it. Never had a malfunction, it is very tight and would highly recommend it as a range toy or just to get introduced into the wonderful world of 1911's
I just bought the Tisas Tank Commander 9mm based on your reviews. Very nicely built. Very solid and easy to disassemble and reassemble even for a novice like me. Now, to get it out to the range!!!
Fantastic review, I love the 1911 and the Commander balances and points perfectly in my hands. I wish Creakote made a coating that matched that deep Winchester bluing I grew up with, but I love their parkerized look too.
Excellent video. I don't know if this applies to 9 mm models, but on the 45 acp, the closed end of the spring should be placed to the rear, and the open end to the front.

I went and purchased a Tisas 1911 Bantam two months ago. I did my research but was still worried as it was relatively expensive for Tisas 1911's. It has been fantastic thus far, a fun shooting gun, no issues as of yet.

Seems to be a nice, quality made 1911. I see nothing to complain about here! Though there are many younger shooters who have NEVER even tried out the 1911, that still "Hate it" nonetheless!
My go to carry 1911, just .45acp instead. Swapped the mags out for some Wilson Combat 47D mags and Wilson Combat wood grips. Parts are hammer forged. Solid 1911 for the money!
Good & chilly last night. Been running the heat a little here & there lately.did the normal vac,clean up & filter change. Kicked on for a while earlier this am. Open window time again now. That storm came trough & rinsed the pollen & crap out of the trees. Nice day for it. Enjoy.
@@GBGuns Yes 'em. I've been watching your channel for some time now. I found out bout Girsan from you as well. Now I own one. (1911 MC Match, in 45 ACP. Two toned, no less.) IMO, they kinda smoke a lot of other 1911/P-35 manufacturers. Quality is top notch. (Although they do use MIM parts.) I like the fact that the frames and slides are forged, not cast, like so many others are.

I started typing it ,got a phone call,decided to listen to a friend talk at me while driving to the local convieiance store(type of guy that you can sit the phone down for 10-15 minutes & do something else & pick it up & hes still going)wanted some Good coffee,a couple beef hot dogs that were looking pretty good & I don’t normally eat them but figured what the hell…otw back saw a neighbor riding around on his mower I talk to him a couple times a week at that same store. We’re both on the same coffee schedule sometimes. He turned 80 the other week. His job in the army was driving a tank. I don’t go to his house & hang out or anything but that’s going to change. I’m going to leave him a note in the mailbox or give it to him at the store one morning & tell him to come over to our place and have a cup sometime. Just me & my 10 year old daughter living back in the woods. His ears are shot as you can imagine. He’s a big guy to have been climbing in & out of a tank but that’s how the cookies crumbled in his situation. I will save this video & turn on the captions for him.ask him if he had a side arm anything like that one.. don’t know if you don’t ask. I have a few 1/2 ass. ” ranges “around the house here. Plenty good enough to stay familiar with he sights on the guns I shoot most often. He might want to do some plinking.?. Doesn’t seem to have much family or anything. Since it's already an all steel "Commander" size, which I love, & now made in America, hopefully Tisas's next move will be to make a Commander size 10 mm. I would be buying that in a heart beat. No one seems to make a 4 1/4" 1911 in 10 mill' & I don't know why.
I don't think these are made in America. I think the answer to your 10mm question might be because they just don't sell. I understand that there are real 10mm fans out there, but in general way more poeple talk about it than shoot it, otherwise we'd see 10mm guns and ammo all over the place.
@@GBGuns I'm pretty sure Tisas is now manufacturing their pistols in Tennessee. Alot of 10mm fans out there, most major companies now make one. I love 1911's, just want a Commander chambered in one. Don't like plastic pistols at all. EAA makes their wonderful, basically a CZ clone 10mm Witness. I have an old compact one, but still prefer a 1911 platform.
No need tl worry about quality on Turkish pistols from the major mfrs. While they might not always be polished, their reliability and materials will often be top notch. Canik, Sarsilmaz, Tisas and Girsan.
Got to look into the nosler match rebranding thing. Read the article about the shooting while moving training class you & T recently attended. You mentioned a certain brand of ammo in that article. Can’t remember name of it right now but will be looking & listening to what you guys have to say on the subject. Good stuff & good work. Thank y’all for your work ,time & knowledge.
It's should be noted that the drop safe issue has been tested and is extremely rare at best if cocked and locked. They've literally drop tested the series 70 off buildings and they wouldn't misfire.
have a 45 tanker model nothing wrong with 9 I have a rock island full size in 9mm just wanted to let everyone know if you go to a full guide rod. The recoil spring that came with my tanker would not go on the guide had to get a standard spring from wolf springs big difference
I just can't get used to a 9mm 1911, especially with a 10rnd cap. The only single stack .45 1911 that I'd like from Tisas is their Zig M1911 (stainless) Government Model. Having a mil-spec 1911 is great for its historical value, but I love double stack 1911's. There's just something about the SAO trigger and the big honkin' steel frame that makes 1911's awesome. The Rock Island Ultra FS HC (16+1) in 10mm that I own is definitely my favorite. You reviewed one a LONG time ago Graham....your opinion was a deciding factor for me....do you still have it?

It's not cerracoat, it is all parkerized with manganese phosphate. The hardened before machined means that it does not leave burrs on the steal and is generally a more expensive machining process. Great review, thanks.
The only time I've seen parkerization anywhere near this smooth is only 70 year old pieces with a lot of wear, and it didn't have that satiny color. I'm fairly confident this is cerakote.

Saw a new strobag (sp? )Came out recently .haven’t checked it out yet but want to look at least. Check out the zenith HK m5 clone. Take it easy
I would like one that is full size, ambi safety ( southpaw here), and tritium sights. In 38 Super although I could fit a 38 barrel in the 9mm and then have a convertable.
Question, Is the frame and slide the same size as a 45cal 1911? For instance for recover tactical picatinny covers you can get. This would be great for a truck gun or garage gun (yes garage) but I’d like a light on it for night time in the garage or in the truck. Thanos
It's interesting that Tisas has recently changed from their plastic grips (which were shit - trust me) to wood grips, and changed the "names" of their full size and commander model pistols along with it. The full size GI now is called the 1911 A1W ( the w is for wood grips iirc), and your particular gun was just the "tanker" before. Either way, they're solid guns for the money. Just weird how they chose to change the nomenclature.
@@vinceruland9236 same. I have the full size "service" model, and I love the looks. But, I use the Magpul TSP grips if I'm range shooting, or for the rare occasions that I take it on road trips or camping.
Hornady hollow points are my preferred in all Calibers, but have recently found Fiocci Defense Dynamics, that aren't horrible...... but I honestly haven't looked into the ballistics of either in 45, thanks for the insight
We might do a video on it someday, but .45 ACP really loses energy in barrels shorter than 5". I'm sure some modern hollow points are designed to perform from shorter barrels since very few people carry a 5"

We don't measure trigger weight because after 270+ guns reviewed and 16 training courses I've discovered that unless the weight is under 3lbs or over 12lbs it really doesn't matter, what matters is the feel. I've encountered lousy 3lb triggers and excellent 12lb triggers.
@@GBGuns I did however have a small issue with the Ruger. The mim front sight broke off while I was shooting. Ruger did sent a new one and this is not a uncommon problem. I however didn't reinstall the new Ruger sight but opted for a forged milled white dot instead. It's a sweet shooting gun but a forged gun will definitely outlast it.
When shooting ANY 1911, you are supposed to rest your thumb on top of the safety, thus preventing you from accidentally re engaging the safety while shooting!
I know this is made a year ago but is anyone having trouble with the clips I can only fit at most 7 rounds in the clip can anyone help also with the clip in the slide is very difficult to release I’ve cleaned and oiled it and it’s still has the same result
That Barrel does have a feed ramp as a part of it which means it is very close or is a closed chamber gun which would make it more than likely that you can shoot plus b and plus P plus 9 mm in that firearm. The series 80 was only and only four the ability to sell the firearms in the state of California because for some reason when you drop the 1911 from 68 ft and it falls perfectly on its muzzle on concrete, it won't even do it on Blacktop, but on concrete, the inertia imparted to the firing pin can make it go off. Let me make this clear. If you're falling off of the seventh story of a building and you fall onto the concrete you're going to want that gun to go off and put you out of your misery. The 1911 when properly assembled is drop safe. If it wasn't there would have been such a human cry about how dangerous that firearm was by 1940 that it would have been eliminated from existence. Can you put damaged Parts into a firearm or wear it out to a point where it is no longer drop safe, you can do that with almost any firearm. But the 1911 does not have a problem with being not safe when you drop it. The way that that round sets in that chamber, it is more than covered by the internal structure of that brass and that is for all intents and purposes a fully supported chamber. If you're worried about it, take 223 brass and cut it down make sure you trim the inside of it and use it for your 9mm brass and load that. You will have to make your loads a little bit lighter because there's less room inside the case but you can make some really hot loads that will not burst. One other warning I would like to give those people who like to play with 1911's, the most useless part or accessory I have ever seen put on any 1911 ever is a full length ride Rod they are utterly useless on the 1911 design. They provide nothing of value except problems.
Old School here...I'm going after one in .45ACP as that's what the 1911 was designed to be. 9mm needs to be a Higher Capacity weapon. This will be my 3rd Tisas 1911A1 variant purchase. Overwhelmed with their Quality , Price and Performance thus far. Next..overall well done video. Downside..info accuracy. " The Back Housing has a hump in it" well Duh..one of the many Design Changes that separates the 1911 from the Model 1911A1...since 1924..its called the Mainspring Housing. The Eyelet. That is called the Barrel Link or Rotating Barrel Link...the 1911 is Toast without it in working order.needs to be Inspected for cracks or Link Pin walk periodically. The End Piece.. that is called the Recoil Spring Cap or Plunger. Care must be taken to avoid under pressure eye injury or part loss while installing. Education is great , as long as the information and nomenclatures are dead accurate.
One thing about your comment however. The main spring housing is the back housing, the rotating barrel link is an eyelet, and the spring cap is indeed the end piece. We don't bog folks down with nomenclature because, especially these days, the majority of viewers are new to 1911s. Burying them in nomenclature that isn't always sensical to a non-1911 person is how you push people away from, not towards this great platform. You'll also see that in our range videos we don't over-dramatize with tactical movements or lingo despite our pedigree. We're trying to help more people enjoy their civil right and a wonderful hobby, not push folks away.
it doesn matter so much with standard 1911, but anyone releasing a slide like you just did on a custom will pretty much ruin a balanced trigger. slides slamming fwd while chambering a round are buffered by the action… doing it empty is a bad habit.
@GBGuns I don't believe I'm wrong. 1911 frames are pretty standard. Go look at any 1911 parts retailer and look at grip safeties. They come in standard and 'flared' or 'beacertail' configurations.
I do want to add that I liked your video. It was well produced, and your oral presentation flows smoothly and articulately. The trouble with being lazy and quick to comment is that I unintentionally came off as being to curt. My apology. @@yankeeastronomer1927 Thank you and no worries, I'm just trying to help. As I understand it the "beavertail" is the section of frame that extends from the tang beyind and under the hammer. It's primary purpose is to protect the user from hammer bite, and in some cases they can help guide a slightly-errant draw. The Beavertail also distributes some of the recoil into the web between the thumb and pointer finger which is why I prefer broaders ones. Wider beavertails have more surface area and so the pounds per square inch of energy delivered into the hand is more broadly distributed resulting in less perceived recoil. In the extreme of a very narrow one it can become a pain point as it drives into the hand.
@GBGuns yes I see where you are coming from and agree with the purpose of a broad, flared feature to reduce hammer bite. In my experience, I have never seen the frame, particularly the tang, extended and flared in that manner. It was always the grip safety that was extended and flared. Beavertail was always a style of grip safety. I fear I am turning into an obstinate old man. I was attracted to this video because I am a 1911A1 addict. I currently own a Stainless steel Colt Govt. Model. As well as two Tisas 1911s. A 'Service' model, and a '1911A1 Army' model. Due to the current state of affairs, I'm thinking I should have a 9mm on hand, in case .45 ammo becomes scarce. But I just love a .45, and I am going to add the Tank Commander to my collection soon. With Tisas prices, I can buy two! Problem solved!
Colt designed the Commander as a 9mm in 1949 and put it into production in 1950. In 1970 they started making it with a steel frame - it's the gun copied here - and called it the Combat Commander - in 9mm. Zero guys were surprised by my 9mm Combat Commander in the 70s. You might want to look into upgrading the old men you listen to and adjust your thinking but that's up to you. Fudds are timeless and there are no age restrictions.
@@Ni999 I am well aware of the history of the 9mm in the 1911 platform. I was a small arms instructor in the Navy when we transitioned from the 1911 to the Beretta, and instructed course of fire on both concurrently. I personally have no affinity for one over the other, as my 1911 in 38 Super will attest. As for me “listening to old men”, I have found that listening to them you will learn a great many things that can keep you from making terrible mistakes, but you have to temper that with your own personality and sense of right. Just bought mine today took it to the range put 100 rounds through it with no problems I love this gun! Very accurate!

I also have the RIA 1911 A2 45 HC 13 + 1 (10 in CA) . Quite accurate and very reliable.

I like the Tisas brand for a good value based gun & the Garrison GI model caught my eye a while back. I’ll figure it out & get my first one eventually. I might change my mind & get a k100 you suggested but the X caliber is what I’m leaning towards for my 1st. Something different. Saw a new strobag (sp? )Came out recently .haven’t checked it out yet but want to look at least. Check out the zenith HK m5 clone. Take it easy

I would like one that is full size, ambi safety ( southpaw here), and tritium sights. In 38 Super although I could fit a 38 barrel in the 9mm and then have a convertable.
Question,
Is the frame and slide the same size as a 45cal 1911? For instance for recover tactical picatinny covers you can get. This would be great for a truck gun or garage gun (yes garage) but I’d like a light on it for night time in the garage or in the truck. Thanos

It's interesting that Tisas has recently changed from their plastic grips (which were shit - trust me) to wood grips, and changed the "names" of their full size and commander model pistols along with it. The full size GI now is called the 1911 A1W ( the w is for wood grips iirc), and your particular gun was just the "tanker" before. Either way, they're solid guns for the money. Just weird how they chose to change the nomenclature.

The Tanker has WW2 style sights and a spur hammer, the Tank Commander has slightly taller, serrated sights and a proper ring hammer
Yeah, the plastic grip panels were terrible. But it was accurate to the WWII pistol. I put used GI plastic grip panels on mine.
@@vinceruland9236 same. I have the full size "service" model, and I love the looks. But, I use the Magpul TSP grips if I'm range shooting, or for the rare occasions that I take it on road trips or camping.

The only Tisas gun I own is the Fatih in .380, it's accurate and eats every kinda .380 ammo I've ran through it.

I carried the same gun until I started paying attention to ballistics. Make sure you've got ammo designed for sub-optimal barrel length.
Hornady hollow points are my preferred in all Calibers, but have recently found Fiocci Defense Dynamics, that aren't horrible...... but I honestly haven't looked into the ballistics of either in 45, thanks for the insight
We might do a video on it someday, but .45 ACP really loses energy in barrels shorter than 5". I'm sure some modern hollow points are designed to perform from shorter barrels since very few people carry a 5"

Trigger pull poundage on this, GB?
We don't measure trigger weight because after 270+ guns reviewed and 16 training courses I've discovered that unless the weight is under 3lbs or over 12lbs it really doesn't matter, what matters is the feel. I've encountered lousy 3lb triggers and excellent 12lb triggers.

Damn. My Ruger Sr1911 was over a $1000 bucks and the entire thing is MIM except for the Slide,barrel and bushing :(
MIM these days isn't as bad as people think (they're stuck in the 70's) but that is a lot of money for a Ruger. I hope it performs well for you.
@@GBGuns I did however have a small issue with the Ruger. The mim front sight broke off while I was shooting. Ruger did sent a new one and this is not a uncommon problem. I however didn't reinstall the new Ruger sight but opted for a forged milled white dot instead. It's a sweet shooting gun but a forged gun will definitely outlast it.

When shooting ANY 1911, you are supposed to rest your thumb on top of the safety, thus preventing you from accidentally re engaging the safety while shooting!

That Barrel does have a feed ramp as a part of it which means it is very close or is a closed chamber gun which would make it more than likely that you can shoot plus b and plus P plus 9 mm in that firearm. The series 80 was only and only four the ability to sell the firearms in the state of California because for some reason when you drop the 1911 from 68 ft and it falls perfectly on its muzzle on concrete, it won't even do it on Blacktop, but on concrete, the inertia imparted to the firing pin can make it go off. Let me make this clear. If you're falling off of the seventh story of a building and you fall onto the concrete you're going to want that gun to go off and put you out of your misery. The 1911 when properly assembled is drop safe. If it wasn't there would have been such a human cry about how dangerous that firearm was by 1940 that it would have been eliminated from existence. Can you put damaged Parts into a firearm or wear it out to a point where it is no longer drop safe, you can do that with almost any firearm. But the 1911 does not have a problem with being not safe when you drop it.
The way that that round sets in that chamber, it is more than covered by the internal structure of that brass and that is for all intents and purposes a fully supported chamber. If you're worried about it, take 223 brass and cut it down make sure you trim the inside of it and use it for your 9mm brass and load that. You will have to make your loads a little bit lighter because there's less room inside the case but you can make some really hot loads that will not burst.
One other warning I would like to give those people who like to play with 1911's, the most useless part or accessory I have ever seen put on any 1911 ever is a full length ride Rod they are utterly useless on the 1911 design. They provide nothing of value except problems.

Next..overall well done video. Downside..info accuracy. " The Back Housing has a hump in it" well Duh..one of the many Design Changes that separates the 1911 from the Model 1911A1...since 1924..its called the Mainspring Housing.
The Eyelet. That is called the Barrel Link or Rotating Barrel Link...the 1911 is Toast without it in working order.needs to be Inspected for cracks or Link Pin walk periodically.
The End Piece.. that is called the Recoil Spring Cap or Plunger. Care must be taken to avoid under pressure eye injury or part loss while installing.
Education is great , as long as the information and nomenclatures are dead accurate.
One thing about your comment however. The main spring housing is the back housing, the rotating barrel link is an eyelet, and the spring cap is indeed the end piece. We don't bog folks down with nomenclature because, especially these days, the majority of viewers are new to 1911s. Burying them in nomenclature that isn't always sensical to a non-1911 person is how you push people away from, not towards this great platform. You'll also see that in our range videos we don't over-dramatize with tactical movements or lingo despite our pedigree. We're trying to help more people enjoy their civil right and a wonderful hobby, not push folks away.

Any Commander-sized 1911 holster should fit. The rest is personal preference.

it doesn matter so much with standard 1911, but anyone releasing a slide like you just did on a custom will pretty much ruin a balanced trigger. slides slamming fwd while chambering a round are buffered by the action… doing it empty is a bad habit.
It doesn't have a 'beavertail'. It is a standard 1911 configuration grip safety.
I think you might be confused as to what a beavertail is. It has nothing to do with the grip safety and is part of the frame design.

I don't believe I'm wrong. 1911 frames are pretty standard. Go look at any 1911 parts retailer and look at grip safeties.
They come in standard and 'flared' or 'beacertail' configurations.
I do want to add that I liked your video. It was well produced, and your oral presentation flows smoothly and articulately.

@@yankeeastronomer1927 Thank you and no worries, I'm just trying to help. As I understand it the "beavertail" is the section of frame that extends from the tang beyind and under the hammer. It's primary purpose is to protect the user from hammer bite, and in some cases they can help guide a slightly-errant draw. The Beavertail also distributes some of the recoil into the web between the thumb and pointer finger which is why I prefer broaders ones. Wider beavertails have more surface area and so the pounds per square inch of energy delivered into the hand is more broadly distributed resulting in less perceived recoil. In the extreme of a very narrow one it can become a pain point as it drives into the hand.
@GBGuns yes I see where you are coming from and agree with the purpose of a broad, flared feature to reduce hammer bite. In my experience, I have never seen the frame, particularly the tang, extended and flared in that manner. It was always the grip safety that was extended and flared. Beavertail was always a style of grip safety.

I was attracted to this video because I am a 1911A1 addict. I currently own a Stainless steel Colt Govt. Model. As well as two Tisas 1911s. A 'Service' model, and a '1911A1 Army' model. Due to the current state of affairs, I'm thinking I should have a 9mm on hand, in case .45 ammo becomes scarce. But I just love a .45, and I am going to add the Tank Commander to my collection soon. With Tisas prices, I can buy two! Problem solved!

Yup, I don't think Browning and Luger would have liked it, but in the modern age it just makes sense.
Colt designed the Commander as a 9mm in 1949 and put it into production in 1950. In 1970 they started making it with a steel frame - it's the gun copied here - and called it the Combat Commander - in 9mm. Zero guys were surprised by my 9mm Combat Commander in the 70s. You might want to look into upgrading the old men you listen to and adjust your thinking but that's up to you. Fudds are timeless and there are no age restrictions.
@@Ni999 I am well aware of the history of the 9mm in the 1911 platform. I was a small arms instructor in the Navy when we transitioned from the 1911 to the Beretta, and instructed course of fire on both concurrently. I personally have no affinity for one over the other, as my 1911 in 38 Super will attest. As for me “listening to old men”, I have found that listening to them you will learn a great many things that can keep you from making terrible mistakes, but you have to temper that with your own personality and sense of right.
