I've been thinking a lot about this lately. Why do we really care if the hobby grows? Do we need more people? We want it to be sustainable for sure. But a corp wants bottom line revenue (10x) while a collector wants experiences w others or the cardboard itself. Does a bigger hobby, more people, make it better?
Actions speak louder than words. Rubin has to deliver. Turner and eBay have to actually speak. Collectors are in driver seat. Do we keep going to shows, buying product, releasing youtube videos, posting on Instagram, pushing this hobby into mainstream again or do we retreat?
New subscriber here. I enjoy your videos so keep them coming! I agree with your take on the sports card industry. Innovation is rampant and will continue to grow the hobby.
Perhaps one of the greatest entrepreneurs in the hobby was J. Warren Bowman (1895-1962) who founded Gum, Inc.\Bowman Gum in 1927 with $25 - everything he had in his bank account. In 1947 he was pulling in a million dollars a month - essentially that was the 2024 equivalent of 68 million per year. I think Enos Gordon Goudey became the first card manufacturer to turn a million dollar profit in 1933. I would also say that John Connolly - Topps distributer was perhaps even more successful banking $2 billion by 1989 and Sy Berger of Topps, creating the monopoly the company enjoyed until Judge Clarence Newcomer broke it up in 1980. I don't think anyone has anything on James Buchanan Duke and Jefferson Burdick on contributing\founding the hobby.
Purchased a card on ebay 2 weeks ago and purposely didn't pay. I believe the card I purchased is still listed on ebays sold listings. Lol. If I can make a fake comp, can't anyone do the same thing?? Ebay shows absolutely no transparency in order to make more money. Yet I still hear people praise ebay solely based on longevity and little more in my opinion.130 point & other sites are showing that same card as being sold based off of ebay data. 100% misleading people on purpose. Complete Joke. Clean things up Ebay!!
eBay has the largest group of people globally looking for product to buy. The other platforms just don’t have the same traffic. Crying about the fees is comical. If you go somewhere else, you’ll be fleeced by buyers taking your fear of fees and turning them into their windfall. Don’t bid on shit you can’t pay for. Pretending you trying to prove a point is ignorant. We all know the possibilities. We need more good actors than backyard home school detectives, imo.
