On this day in 1962 {March 26th} Ronnie and the Hi-Lites performed "I Wish That We Were Married" on the late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand'... Five days later on March 31st it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #16 and spent 12 weeks on the Top 100... Sadly, 'Ronnie' Goodson passed away on November 4th, 1980 at the young age of 31... R.I.P. Mr. Goodson and Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012}...
I went to Lincoln High in Jersey City......Loved this song back in the day and it still sounds great!! Loved it when they sang at assembly on Friday's!

This Was My Favorite ''Double Sided'' Record On Vinyl.I Went To Lincoln High School And,We Were In The Same ''English Class'' Together. Also,All Of The School Was Told That He Would Be On Mr. Dick Clark's ''American Bandstand'' To Sing This Particular Song.Thank You For The Memories,P.S. We Were Both From:Jersey City.
Ronnie & The Hi-Lites (7) (Jersey City, N.J) Personnel : Ronnie Goodson "Ronald Goodson" (Lead) Sonny Caldwell (First Tenor) John Witney (Second Tenor) Stanley Brown (Baritone) Kenny Overby (Bass)
Ronnie was a great talent. I was in the 2nd iteration of Ronnie & the Hi-Lites. The 1st group broke up after they had to go to court over a royalty dispute with the label. My group was managed by Hal & Marion Weiss and they said they'd like to put us together with Ronnie. We sang this at all our shows and it brings back tons of memories. He died way too soon.
In 1962 Ronnie Goodson is about the age of 14. He and the group here were just before called The Cascades. They signed w/ Eddie Joy's label in 1961. The teen kid with four young men made for Frankie Lymon type music, especially successful here on I Wish That We Were Married. Wish got to #16 on the pop chart. Touring came about; he toured along with his girlfriend, Loco Motion singer Little Eva (Boyd). Sadly, Ronnie passed away in his early thirties. :I:
Linda, this song I never have heard. I remember asking my first love in high school in '76 to be my "Steady" because my older brothers used the term in the late 50's and early 60's--man was I corny but she was my first girlfriend. The next year I think I got it right and asked my now wife if "she would be my girl"--Still came out corny.
"B" Side: Original: Ronnie and The Hi-Lites ( U.S. ) - Twistin' and kissin' ( M. Weiss - E. Lewis ). Covers: Julissa ( Mexico ) - Mi príncipe azul ( twistin' and kissin' ) ( 1963 ). Los H.H. ( Spain ) - Twist de la risa ( 1963 ). Dúo Cramer ( España ) - Twist de la risa ( 1963 ).
the group pictured at 2:47 is not ronnie/hi-lites....it is a group called little mr. lee & the cherokees........this has been going on since michael ochs misidentified the group in his otherwise great book "rock archives".............

Say! Do you know whom sang"zoom zoom zoom? Been trying to find it on YT.
Did Twistin and Kissin actually hit the Billboard charts? Even though it was the b-side (pretty sure, yes?), I always thought it was such a good song.
