For me, healthy hair is hair that does what you want it to do. Many of us spend years trying to figure that out, and it's only through trial and error that you finally do. After eight years, I finally discovered what that was for me, and it was becoming a straight natural. The length retention has been through the roof. I love your channel and how unapologetic you are with how you care for your hair, which is simply gorgeous!

Absolutely, I have been natural since 1998, and I am just giving my coiled hair the love and delicate attention it needs to flourish.
No one is really out here focusing on the love of it, it’s more about which products to buy and how to get it to waist length overnight.
Hair grows, period. We either nurture it or abuse it.

    • @nicelagirl
      @nicelagirl 6 месяцев назад +3

@user-po9ne6tx1c Sure! It simply means I never wear my hair in its coily state. I blow dry and flat iron it instead. But unlike using chemical straighteners, my hair still reverts when I wash it. Hence, I'm still natural.

Your comment on how the natural hair community should be one that engages in hearing about how all naturals experience and view their own hair, is absolutely how it used to be. I went natural in 1998.
Back then we had influencers like African Export and Taren Guy, and too many other OG’s to mention, and NO ONE was hating or thinking their hair was better than the next. They showed us how to style the kinkiest to the straightest. No one judged the use of a comb, a blow dryer, a flat iron….none of that….
The new generation of know-it-all’s bought toxicity to natural hair, and it’s a shame that instead of learning from each others textures and experiences, we have to one up , with what we personally believe everyone else should be doing with their strands!

THIS IS THE MOST COMMON SENSE HAIR VIDEO ABOUT HEALTHY HAIR THAT I'VE COME ACROSS!!! 👏🏾👏🏾 Well said and explained sis, healthy hair is going to look different for everyone.
Personally for me, I don't rim my hair/end for religious reasons but in the "healthy hair" it's seen as unkempt and unhealthy. Healthy hair to me is hair that flourishes and is full of all it's luxuriousness. It doesn't matter if it's short, long, thin, thick as long as it's growing and the proper care is being done to it, I consider it healthy 😊

Another awesome vid. Personally healthy hair to me is the lack of breakage, length retention over time & hair that can be moisturized and retain moisture.
Now that you shared your points, healthy hair is completely subjective. Who knows, my definition of healthy hair may change one day and that's ok.
This conversation is the root of all of the debate. The fact that an opinion so subjective can be placed on others. Then groups form based on these opinions. Often it seems like the most organized and loud groups “appear” to win the debate brainwashing others to feel like opposing opinions are wrong. I value your channel for challenging what is painted as the “standard.”

Amen sister! I agree with you 100%. Healthy hair, to me, is hair that's strong (not breaking off / minimal breakage), that's not shedding excessively and is growing. My belief stems from caring for and looking after my own hair. I do not believe there should be one metric that applies to every hair type. I believe that if you're happy with your hair, the opinions of others (including professionals) matter less. If you're unhappy with your hair and you're unsure how to "fix it," then the opinions of others (especially professionals) matter more.

For me, healthy hair is hair I can style the way I want with a reasonable amount of effort without it breaking off. I had very healthy hair with dreadlocks for decades, but I got tired of locs. I've damaged my hair since, trying different things. But healthy hair isn't everything. I want to have healthy hair I have fun with, so that's the journey I'm on. Locs were fun, until they weren't anymore.

Never saw the need for it and my wash days are no different with or without them. But people online will make you feel it's necessary. Same with gel. But as you a said... I like how my hair feels and looks and that's all that matters. I also completly relate to you saying frizz is just the nature of my hair. I embrace it.

What a breath of fresh air it was to watch your video. I decided to go natural at the start of the pandemic after 30+ yrs of perming my hair. YES it was difficult, i didnt big chop i followed the info which i followed from RUclipsrs whichbi found helpful and even tried some of the trends but now i do my own thing and ive found that less is more. Im still natural and i love it. Looking at your video showed me how versatile our hair is. I visit the hair salon once a yr (if that) for a trim orherwise i dust ny ends myself. I agree with you that people should be their own judges on how healthy their hair is. Professional opinions can be helpful but in the end we all need to be comfortable in our own skin (and hair)🙏

First off you are stunning 😍 Secondly love the graphics in the video. Finally thank you for voicing what could be seen as an unpopular opinion. It's so true we can take all the information learnt but we need to do what works for our hair. Funnily enough my close friend sent me your video of you not cutting your hair after many years. After I just trimmed of 2 sections of healthy hair. After a big chop and 10 years in constant braids and wigs, I started properly taking care of my natural hair in August 2023 after a silk press and trim (luckily no damage) After 2- 3 months I took a pair of sears and started trim. That's the rule right?? But when I actually looked at my ends I didn't really have split ends so I stopped. When I followed your technique of actually looking at my ends and only cutting split ends and signal strands knots I only needed to trim about 5 split ends and 3 SSK. My darling you saved me and my hair about 1/2 inch of unnecessary loss. My hair has never been healthier as I listen to what she needs I've managed to maintain so much length, cleaner scalp and soft touchable hair.

Extremely inspirational as I have struggled with accepting my hair as it is based off of others opinions. So far in my journey of acceptance I've realized that healthy Hair is when it's allowed to do what it wants to do, to flourish, to be free, and lay, stand up, puff out out, etc., the way it wants.
So many views on what healthy Hair is from shine to straight to conditioned, to processed.
No, I don't think the metrics used should apply to everyone because everyone's hair type is different, mixed, or simply doesn't fall into any one category. However, it does help in a way to help care for our hair.

If my ends are flexible and somewhat strong (I don’t trim often), then the length of my hair is also strong. I judge my hair’s overall health by the oldest and weakest parts. I’m leaving this comment before I finish the video. I’m about a minute in and I would say healthy hair changes based on whose hair you’re talking about. My idea of healthy hair is hair that is moisturized; hair that doesn’t have a lot of split ends; and most importantly hair that has retained its natural curl pattern. That is how I determine the health of my 3c/4a high density but thin strand hair.

I have been relaxed since 8 until 16 when I decided to transition. I still use heat every 6 months, but my hair was flurishing. Then my older cousin and aunt, that were natural for over a decade were criticizing my hair for it loose curl pattern making me feel ashame of heat damage, which only they believe I have, I chop my ends off and my curl pattern still wasn't as bouncing. I was so discouraged that I went back to relaxers. I transition a second time at 19, and now at 21, I love my loose curls pattern. They try to shame me about using heat again, but I shut them down. I only straightened my hair for trims twice a year, and my ends and roots are full. Shiny and full, and that's what is healthy for me.

I don't necessarily believe healthy hair standards are subjective. There is a science behind it that I don't think should be dismissed. At the same time, I don't think we need to be alarmist about everything. Personally while split ends do need to be cut, I don't think they are a "code blue" condition, otherwise stylists wouldn't gradually cut them off or work around them if the client is not ready for a significant cut. I think we have in mind that splits travel up the shaft like a split zipper. I'm not a stylist, but I don't think it's as rapid of a process.
As for what is actually healthy hair, I believe professionals can only properly assess, just like medical professionals assess our physical health. It's also a very broad question, just like asking what is healthy eating, what does it mean to be fit...A person can be fit to play tennis but not fit enough to be a navy seal. a person can be fit enough to scale a flight of stairs without being winded but not fit enough to run a mile. A person's hair can be healthy enough for color treatments and a person's hair can be unhealthy enough to not be able to get a relaxer. Heat damage is the enemy to someone wanting to maintain the integrity of their curl pattern. For some that's not their priority. Is the heat damaged hair less healthy than the none damaged hair? Technically yes, but does that mean we are in a "code blue" situation? no.

I def. still lean towards healthy being subjective. Even with our physical medical health, I don't think that healthy is black and white. BUT I respect your opinion and right to view and care for your hair in the way that you believe. Thanks for watching!

Great video because I've been hearing all my life that my hair is unhealthy, I need trim, and I need oil in my hair, all my life, lol. Every time I go to the hairdresser they say you need a cut, I always say this cant be true all the time.

For me, healthy hair is shrinkage. When I was a child my hair would shrink to a short Afro and was so tight and coarse. Now, we have all these products that have changed the natural curl pattern and my texture is not the same plus it’s much thinner. It also doesn’t retain length like it use to. I feel my hair is healthiest when I use a combination of protein, Aloe Vera, castor oil and other carrier oils in addition to my wash day routine. I don’t trim my hair often. Mostly, when my ends start to have a lot of spider knots is the only time that I trim the ends.

Good topic for a video. I cut all my hair off because nothing was working before. We'll see if a fresh start helps. I am not even sure what healthy hair is anymore. I just knew the constant breakage and dryness in my hair wasn't healthy.

Omg yes just found you. I’m on a journey to grow hair. For many years, my hair would grow to my waist and I would cut it above my shoulders, but that’s because I want to have it short at the time but in between my growth, I never trimmed it and it grew like a weed. Now I’m trying to grow it out again, I do not believe in cutting my hair at all or even trimming it. I’m doing protective styles castor oil on the ends and locking in moisture.

In my honest opinion healthy hair is what all black women are initially born with until we ruin it by using stuff like haircolor relaxers & daily use of hot tools (curling irons, flat irons, straightening combs etc)
