Definitely the "Live" album is a must for one's collection! Rare Earth is one of the few bands where for an initial reaction or introduction, I'd actually recommend the live versions of their songs!! Especially Get Ready, and this one.
Vanilla Fudge does a great version of this, and so does Rod Stewart on his "Every Picture Tells a Story" album with The Faces. Temptations with the original. All of them great, so it must be just a great song!

I first head the LP version of "Ma" twice, before I ever heard the radio-edit version. When the radio-edit version became the only one they played, I felt so cheated. The Temptation's versions of this song and "Get Ready" were my favorite, because of the singing, choreography and the soulfiness. Both the Temptations and Rare Earth were at Motown. I still dig me some Rare Earth and their funky style, though. Norman Whitfield at Motown worked with Rare Earth helping them to make their rock funky and he was the same guy that helped the Temptations with their smash hit "Papa was a Rolling Stone"

Chod, when I first heard King’s X in 1988, the first thing I noticed was how similar their main singer,dUg Pinnick sounded to Rare Earth’s Pete Rivera. Pete also plays the drums. Which was kind of rare in a powerful rock band in 1971. Speaking of King’s X they have 17 albums and are my favorite hard rock band ever. Try Dogman for a start please. They are so talented it’s a crime they were ignored by radio for 4 decades.
