Why Ryanair Isn't As Bad As You Think - And Also Why It Is!

  • At the end of 2022, we put out a video on our main channel titled “7 Reasons Why Flying Ryanair Isn't As Bad As You Think.” A few weeks later, there was a companion article titled “Counterpoints: Five Reasons To Avoid Ryanair,” just to balance things out. Amusingly, highlighting the good parts of Rynair’s service resulted in some people accusing us of being paid to make the airline look good. But others, responding to the counterpoints, labelled it as a hit piece! Well, we’ve learned that there’s truly no pleasing the internet on certain topics!
At the same time, we thought it would be good to use this video as an opportunity to place these two opposing viewpoints side by side to give a better picture of low cost travel for passengers.
Some points in today’s video will exclusively relate to Ryanair, but - as many have pointed out with our Ryanair content - many points are also relevant to other low-cost carriers!

On the seats points, I will say, while the seats are uncomfortable, I love that they don't recline, cos people don't care about the people they have behind, so I rather not fight. Also, more middle seats are assigned randomly cos very few people will actually pay to get them assigned

I sincerely believe that there is a special place in hell reserved for self-centred people who recline their airline seats in cattle class.

@@Dave_Sissonluckily for you, a few airlines are introducing new back shell (or partial back shell in the form of Qatar’s new seats) in Economy Class. Funnily enough, these replace the modern day economy seats that are so upright you feel like you’re leaning forwards when not reclined.

True that. If you know to avoid all those upselling tactics, you're able to travel with them for very little money. Additionally, many of the extras like seat reservations are far less expansive than with legacy carriers.

I love Ryanair for short distance flights. They fly on time. It's like a bus. You all get in the plane, doors close and off you go. Not waiting for late passengers, wonderful! The seats are OK and with my 2 mtr. lenghts I'm happy they don't recline. If I need more luxury, I pay more. What more do I need?

I bet the reason middle seats are most often dealt to passengers who choose "random" selection is because passengers who choose their own seats pick aisle or window seats first, leaving only the middle seats open to the rest.

Just started using the Ryanair Liverpool to Madrid service (Easyjet stopped flying the route). 6 flights so far and, tbh, they are really quite good. They are very clear about what you do and don't get depending on what you pay and the cabin crew are excellent. It's cheap too, important for a family of five!

  • @AviatorCameron

I flew with Ryanair for the first time in March of this year. The reason I never did before was because I heard they didn't assign seats. When they eventually started doing booking seats online, I knew I'd fly with them eventually. The outbound flight was delayed by about 20 to 30min but it didn't affect me. I had booked a bus to Dublin City centre from the airport through their website but I never got a bus ticket so I had pay for another one outside the airport. I won't be doing that again. I was angry at first that my return flight was delayed because I had a train seat booked to get home from Kerry airport. But I found out it was due to a combination of wintery weather and an air traffic controller strike in France so the delay wasn't Ryanair's fault. I missed my train and had to buy a new ticket and wait 2 hours for the next one. The flights themselves were fine. I enjoyed having a window seat both ways, the planes weren't packed (meaning I happened to have 2 seats to myself on one of them) and the landings were not too hard. That was my experience flying with Ryanair.
One of my nieces is Ryanair cabin crew, based in Dublin. So she regularly flies all over Europe. She hadn't been to Morocco yet when I last spoke to her about places she's flown to even though they do flights from Dublin.

Emissions and the cost savings by selecting an airport far away is offset by the fact you have to take a bus. Once happened to me since I bought tickets to fly from Beauvais (don't tell me it's in Paris). I have to pay for a to-fro ticket on a TGV and switch to a metro to go get the bus to the airport. I spent 4-5 hours traveling just to the airport. Net, it was expensive than if I would've gotten a ticket from a different airline flying point-to-point at the city I live at.

Given the odd airport locations and hence additional travel time/cost by train/coach, and the odd times of day they depart/land, it doesnt suit me.
Maybe if you are young and/or dont have much money, and are willing to put up with the above, then its a good buy.

You are right to say that its not only RyanAir! I added a luggage on my Wizzair flight and the price more than tripled ... So maybe you could do a video about other low costs in EU as well? And about the flight times they have, you have to take in account that if you fly at odds times, you can lose the money for one or even two days of logging, if you dont want to sleep on a bench until 14:00 the next day ....

I've flown only once in Ryanair since I don't live in Europe (I'm from Brazil). In the end I sort of regretted getting Ryanair. I arrived from Brazil through Heathrow and had to get a bus all the way to Stansted + luggage allowance. Luckily, Ciampino airport in Italy is as far as FCO from city centre, just less transport options. On the way back to Heathrow the same issue, and since there was a fairly long delay time, I had to buy myself a sandwich both times. All in all, if I had bought a ticket from BA straight from Heathrow to whatever airport in Rome, the additional BA price nearly compensated all other costs (transport + luggage + meal, as it would included in the ticket) and with far less stress.
But I do understand that it is an excellent option for who uses air transport regularly in Europe, just need to make a lot of research first and need to be very aware of crap advertisment.

Korean here, I've only heard of Ryanair with all those hard landing videos, so I assumed it had a poor reputation. But after my friend went to Europe and used Ryanair earlier this year, he praised about Ryanair's incredibly reasonable fare; as mentioned in this video, a Ryanair ticket fare can be as low as 8 pounds, whereas a cheapest ticket of GMP-PUS(about 400km) costs about 40 pounds, 25 at the lowest.

I don’t mind Ryan air at all. Printing out your pass is a pain given you’re traveling but otherwise it’s fine if you’re backpacking around europe. Usually the routes are under 1.5 hours so it’s pretty quick. Anything over 2 hours it starts to get uncomfortable but for $30-$50 you really can’t complain sometimes

From what I know, big corporate entities avoid their personnel and associates flying with Ryanair.
This is because the company cover in full the cost of the travel and lodging for their people. The taxi fare for a trip in the middle of the night from a secondary airport to the destination in the capital city, can amount to ten times the amount of the airplane ticket.
    Business travel avoid Ryanair.
When travelling with a family, the ticket price isn't the first consideration. An excessively long airport transfer can cause havoc in a group including kids and aged people. Or a airplane trip of moderate length without food and drinks.
I privately flew Ryanair only once, and not by choice; and never as corporate. But many persons find flying Ryanair convenient, so I refrain from giving any suggestion...

    No aircraft loss.
That’s cos Lion air and Ethiopian did the fatal testing.
Michael O’Leary went to see Boeing to order a few hundred in their darkest hour to make sure he got them cheap, before he knew that they would be recertifiied to fly again.
In other words, he actually ordered the death plane.
That shows you the Ryanair ethos.
