Unbelievable video. Love Buddy. Rip.
If you ever get a chance, go to Clovis and visit the Studio. It’s a step back in time. I enjoyed a whole afternoon there, talking with the current owner Ken. It was a real treat..!
That will be the day was one of the first singles for me to buy. Was very young. Great bio. Much more detailed than the movie. Was one of the first songs that my favorite group, the Beatles recorded. Hearing songs that I have never heard before.
The minute I hear him sing that was it got to the record store and got what. Songs he had there. That was my favorite singer and still is. NO ONE SINGS LIKE Buddy
After watching many interviews about Buddy they really depict him having an open mind about trying new things. He didn't seem to have a toxic ego.
Who ever does not like his music has now taste because he's the best.its sad
how he died. :(
Brilliant,❤
Yes! One of my favorite Buddy Holly songs, too.
30 minutes to write That'll Be The Day,
and here I am after 15 years of trying and all I can show for it are two lines 😢😊
That's why he's the great Buddy Holly 🎉
Well if he was a nerd, then he was probably the most awesome nerd to have lived.
the crickets lived the dream!
This what McCartney and Lennon said about the influence Buddy had on them..."If there was never a Buddy Holly there would be no Beatles..."
Wow what a freaking genus to transfer a line form a John Wayne song into a pop Rock and Roll it. Just think what else he could have done, along with the two to other Rock Stars Riche Valens and The Big Bopper (Daddy, lol) if their lives weren't tragically cut short, tears? R.I.P Mr. Holly, "Rave On!!!"
fantastic love all this brings back memories xxx
On a questionnaire Buddy was asked about his dream. He said: To be a music publisher. Sadly, the reason he had to go on that ill fated tour was to pay the bills as he had a hard time getting his royalties.
Norman Petty co-wrote either none or close to none of Buddy's songs, in spite of being listed as a co-writer for many of them. Like a lot of producers of his day, Petty would claim numerous co-writing credits to secure himself publishing royalties.
What's good about this is it was made in 1985 and not 2013 so everyone involved back then was still around.
JamesTKirkCobain It came out in 1987
Thanks for the clarification. Petty did very well financially after Holly's death releasing new Holly songs. What a talent Holly was!
It's looks good I love it so much it's looks good I love it so far away magic of the world part time past flash back past life look like
Excuse me my dyslexia struck again, blush, and lol. I think you know I meant, it's pretty cool that Buddy wrote the song "That'll Be the Day," out of the line John Wayne used in one of his movies.
WOw I didn't know Buddy had a twin in his band.
haha Vi rocked that shit! I always LOVED the solo piano bit on "Think It Over" that was was awesome to see :D
That board at 05:44 is the same kind of board used at Sun Records to record Elvis' first record. I know because I used that board as a radio announcer at one of Sam Phillips' radio stations.
Yeah I know and one of the first Pioneers to the all the fucking shit on a stick my generation lesions to, eye roll. I'm only 26, and was born 27 years after his plane crashed in an Iowa field, but I love Buddy and his generations music way the hell better than my own, and also pisses me off when people my age and younger bash any of them. He sure may of looked like a geek, but he played better than anyone else combined in his generation may I dare say, as well as my generations idols.
some people will never get to enjoy and understand great music, which is unfortunate, but you know Buddy and others are definitely appreciated by peoplethat count like most rock n rollers of the 60s- even the famous Beatles loved and covered his music! Paul even bought the rights to Buddy's music to make sure it wasnt used in commericials and ruined by terrible cover versions.
Norman Petty was a songwriter and music producer. He also recorded most of Buddy Holly and the Cricket's classics. He co-wrote some of Holly's songs.
True too that Norman's wife Vi played piano on think it over xylophone for everyday🎹🎶😁😻
My pleasure. Buddy Holly ended up being Petty's cash-cow, as you noted. It seems quite slimy in hindsight, but was pretty common practice in that era. Towards the end of Buddy's life, much of his time was spent pursuing legal relief for money he felt he was owed and hadn't been paid for songwriting royalties.
i agree with you. Buddy holly would've been immaculate in his time, surpassing the beatles and whatnot. And yes, the beatles suck. He really did help start rock n roll, along with Elvis. I can only imagine what his songs would've sounded like in the later years
BUDDY IS THE FIRST BEATLE!!!
@EresAmada00 Watch "The Buddy Holly Story" (1978) Gary Busey plays Buddy, and "La Bamba" (1987) Lou Diamond Phillips plays Ritchie Valens - both good films. I can't find The Buddy Holly Story on youtube (just this biography), but La Bamba is still up on youtube. And youtube also has "Great Balls of Fire!" about Jerry Lee Lewis.
@50sguy1 right on man! Good for u. Ur quite young and have good taste already.
8:20 love that diagonal zipper collar.
6:23 she's got... swing!!!
i agree .. all they know is senseless rap music with auto tuneing.. without music like this there wouldnt be any rock n roll or r&b or even rap .. buddy holly opened doors for all races.
Did Ritchie Valens have some influence on the Beatles?
rock was born in the 50's and died in the 90's.
por favor traducirla al español soy de venezuela y soy admirador de este gran musico
Buddy holly, sweety pie
That wasn't my point at all lol. What I was actually saying is that Justin Bieber's lyrics have no substance. It's just gushy pop song bullshit. Whereas Buddy Holly's songs actually have meaning. Even though That'll be the Day was inspired by a John Wayne movie, it still has a stronger emotional feeling that Justin Bieber.
Who is Justin Bieber ?
Buddy would not have been on that plane if it wasn't for Norman Pettys greed.
Disagree, it was not up to him and the plane crash was a freak accident. He made many flights like that before. The rubbish it was snowing at night in the movies never happened.
Who's the dude playing guitar (other than Buddy) on the Ed Sullivan clip - "That'll Be The Day"?
His name was Niki Sullivan. He was Holly's second cousin, hence the resemblance
Thanks - he does look a lot like him.
How come hollywood doesnt make movies on buddy or richie or elvis about there lives........ Just like walk the line?????
@drummer4theperish lol you're right, but what I meant is that since the 90's there hasn't been one decent rock band in the world. It's all electronic, with auto tunes and etc..
Not ALL youth's hate Buddy Holly and love the Jonas Brother's, i'm 14 and i think the Jonas Brother's are awful, Buddy Holly rocks!
Doc Nosbisch damn you can tell this comment was 8 years ago the Jonas brothers 😂
Think it over.......
there is a old Beatles' version of this song and it is almost the same
@BunWackettBuzzard You're right--popular songs with "fake" instruments are already flooding the airwaves. On top of that, music isn't being recorded nearly as well now as it was then. That's because today's producers are mixing songs to make them sound best on today's tiny cellphone speakers and miniature home stereo systems. Basically all they're doing in the studio is turning the recording volume all the way up on every part of the track. Sounds like crap through real full-size speakers.
135 mph??? GEEEEZ
Did buddy holly ever recorded the song as a time flies
Buddy Holly did what Elvis didn't do. Buddy Holly toured the UK.
So let me see, Buddy and the Crickets came to Norman to record. Norman and Violet Ann bent over backwards to help them, when nobody else would spending their time, talents, and resources to help them gain stardom. Along with many long hours in the studio with Normans ideas along with Buddy and the Crickets ideas. Norman and Vi did so much for them. It was Normans idea for them to further themselves by going to New York to these people who could do more for them, but Norman had the expertise had the recordings already done. So let's see, he was supposed to do this for free??? That's why everything had his name on it! That was his pay!!! That was how things were done.
Provide proof that Petty's services were done for free. I want to see receipts.
I didn’t say he did them for free. I said was he supposed to do it for free. The way music producers got paid back in the day was to put their name on the songs. Also if he added something to the songs or changed something then you put your name on it. I get so tired of people bashing Norman for his name being on songs he earned his name being on the songs.
@kagoshimaenglish That's the reason that I weep for my generation, to be honest...If that's how they really think, then wtf is Justin Bieber?? Let's do a comparison.
JB: And I was like baby, baby, baby, oh. Like baby, baby, baby, no. Like baby, baby, baby, oh. Thought you'd always be mine, mine.
BH: That'll be the day when you make me cry. You say you're gonna leave. You know it's a lie cuz that'll be the day when I die.
The rhymes may be simple, but it's no comparison. BH will always be better
Did Norman Petty ever get in big legal trouble? Did the Crickets ever get even?
You couldn't have envisioned the massive influence Buddy Holly would have on pop music. Buddy couldn't have imagined it. I wish he could've seen the atomic blast he was responsible for: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys - and all the brilliant bands Buddy was the springboard for. Nobody set the stage for the future of Rock & Roll and Pop Music like Buddy Holly.
just for the record another FACT -all time overall record sales beatles 246 million -elvis 197 million,FACT that makes them the biggest selling musical act of all time just like i said in the first place.next time do your homework before you throw around silly comments like the beatles suck, i rest my case mr JACOBRESTER
They just don't know Rock N Roll
She doesn't mention the $1000's of dollars her husband, Norman Petty, stole from Buddy and was the major reason he had to take the horrible concert tour that took his life. I would be ashamed to show my face..
@kagoshimaenglish kids today dont know shit .They were real musicians, they didnt use some machine to make beats.most guys today steal there music.
Now they are all passed on 😢
How did Holly hook up with Norman Petty?
FACT-elvis was recording from 1955-1977 = 22 years the beatles 1962-1970 = 8 years do the math big difference there einstein !!!!!
@kagoshimaenglish well, these are the same "youths" who helped make the Jonas Bros. and Hannah Montana stars, so I'd take it with a grain of salt.
@roflgoodgame Actually, Rock 'n' Roll was dying out in the mid 60s due to "folk rock." If it wasn't for the Beatles and the "British Invasion" Rock 'n' Roll would have completely died out.
Ed was important with his guitar work. He lost interest in the band and quit.
@roflgoodgame the beatles suck eh! thats a real genius statement, the biggest selling musical act of all time.what the hell i guess its not even worth replying to that kind of statement
@kagoshimaenglish Excuse my vulgar words but, kids today have grown up with shit covered in whip cream. I think that statment alone tells you what music is like today. I am 26 years old and find myself listening to the older but better music of the past, the worst part is, it will only get worse as time goes on, to a point where unitellagable lyrics are popular and songs that come off a production line are No1 hits, and it's 'not cool' to play a instrument. Very sad.
