Gary Busey definitely should have gotten an Oscar for his role as Buddy Holly in the movie... The fact that he didn't was the rip off of the century...
I hear you but his performance in that movie sits him firmly in Buddys legacy, especially as there's such little footage of Holly, awards fade and crumble but his place is assured forever, time will honour Busey far more than any panel of Hollyweirdos
And over and over and over. In the early 90s when this aired, 1978 was 6,000 years before time. Nobody knew about the Buddy Holly movie, and fewer people gave a shit about it, but Gary was nominated and he milked the shit out of it till he's on Arsenio unable to remember the lyrics to a basic song. Coke, coke, coke, motorcycle accident, etc. Point Break is awesome and Jake was in the sequel to Groundhog Day, S.F.W..
Gary got screwed our of an Oscar for The Buddy Holly Story cause he actually sang and played all the songs in the movie. Loved the movie and have the album that Gary recorded.
Never seen the buddy holly story but cos you say gary actually played guitar and sang I will check the film out. I think his version of maybe baby in this video is great! So thanks for the info of the film
James T LOL!!!!jajjajajajajjaj😜😜😜😜😜😜😜😜😜YO THIS GARY WAS FULL OF GOOD ENERGY MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! REALLY STRONG GOOD ENERGY NOBODY EVEN KNOWS ABOUT HIM!!!!!!!!!!!
Gary Busey was cool back in the day! ✌️...It's also nice to see him with his son and see how he kinda paved the way for his son to also become a successful actor.
Gary busey played a great buddy Holly, always watch out for when the buddy Holly story comes on, could watch and re-watch it over and over... Keep performing.
Gary Busey was nominated and up against Sir Lawrence Olivier, Jon Voight, Warren Beatty, and Robert de Niro for the Oscar for Best Male Actor in a lead role for the Buddy Holly Story. What a wonderful honour. What a great actor.
Wow, great clip! Really enjoyable to watch. Love Gary, and Arsenio was always good at bringing unique aspects out of people that other hosts wouldn't. Jake Busey's appearance is just icing on the cake. Thanks for the upload!
I was a big fan of Gary Busey. I think he should have won an Oscar for his portrayal of Buddy Holly. He showed how multi talented he was in that movie. I'd definitely buy the sound track.
Very interesting.....I like his version of Buddy.....Buddy, of course, was much more 1950 square- cool, and maltshop. Gary captures the spirit of it, and adds his own twist.....I think buddy would approve.
For all the people worried about the broken string: Strings are replaced FREQUENTLY on a guitar. The older they are the worse they sound. So no big deal breaking one. I guarantee those are not the strings that were on the guitar when Holly was plunkin' on it.
I'm watch The Buddy Holly Story this morning all in my Googles and came across this. This was amazing. I'm more familiar with Gary playing a bad guy in an action film. It's been an honor to see this sideof him.
At first I didn't think that Gary Busey was the best choice to play Buddy, but after seeing him in the movie I couldn't see anyone doing him better. A truly great performance. I had the same opinion when I saw Kurt Russell playing Elvis in John Carpenter's biopic, "Elvis." But I learned that if you're a good actor you can play anyone.
I actually like Gary Busey. And WOW, when he did that quick hambone thing, he sounded great. I'm glad he's a Christian. See you in heaven, Brother Gary!
There may have been other actors that could have looked more like Buddy Holly than Busig, but just like Lou Diamond Phillips did not exactly resemble Ritchie Valens, both actors were incredible in the way they were able to embody the spirits of the fallen stars
I was in grade school when I saw him in The Buddy Holly Story. That was 45 years ago but I still vividly recall the roller rink scene and Ollie Vie. They say he insisted on doing the music live, and it's very clear from what we see here, that he had the chops to do it.
After the crash he seems to be more open and not nervous at all. Before the wreck he seemed nervous during interviews but the crash didn't change him much. People think the crash completely flipped his personality but that's false it didn't change him that much.
I once heard it said of the line between genius and insanity "Genius is singing while playing a guitar and harmonica, BUT if you then strap cymbals to your knees..." lol, Love Busey, he holds nothing back, real soul, and damn if his son doesn't look like Glenn Gregory from Heaven 17
A young Gary Busey before alcohol and mug shots, and he could actually play and sing. I wasn't sure about that when I saw the Buddy Holly movie, way back when. Not a fan of Arsinio, but like this segment.
My friend told me about Gary and Rick Danko coming over to party with him at his apartment in North Beach, S.F. a few times. I was living in Wash. State those years he had celebrities around. He was also Janis Joplin's road manager before I knew him. He was in her book. He said the guys would play music and get high together. RIP to my friend Kenneth.
I remember a rare moment back in 2006 having dinner with Gary, his assistant and my brother JD* at the Phoenician hotel. *Brother JD worked with Gary in the original Star is Born, along with Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. We had a most interesting conversation that night at the Phoenician Hotel. Gary is truly a high-energy, world-class wrecking ball. A man after Gods heart and a tremendous joy to be around. Keep the faith Gary!! And always wear a helmet kids!!! Jeremiah 29:11 Proverbs 3:5,6
He is a absolutely wonderful man. So talented been in a lot of amazing movies. Last of old Hollywood's biggest star's. God bless you in all you do. Love you Gary.
Gary Busey definitely should have gotten an Oscar for his role as Buddy Holly in the movie... The fact that he didn't was the rip off of the century...
The second rip off after Judy Garland in A Star is Born.
I hear you but his performance in that movie sits him firmly in Buddys legacy, especially as there's such little footage of Holly, awards fade and crumble but his place is assured forever, time will honour Busey far more than any panel of Hollyweirdos
I agree ☝️ and I don’t even know who won that year. GB brought BH to life in that film. He should have won.
Word on the street is you have to know or "blow" the right person for that....jus sayn
@@Daydreamer-ok6jj I don't know either...
Gary does justice to Buddy’s music in his own way
David Montgomery that’s about the best way I’ve ever seen it said
He destroys it

I don’t understand that...why did singing for real ruin his chances? He should have won dammit!
Never seen the buddy holly story but cos you say gary actually played guitar and sang I will check the film out. I think his version of maybe baby in this video is great! So thanks for the info of the film
He should've won an Oscar .. he was FAB .. acting singing playing ... WOW!!
@Kay Mitchell That's subjective and you've every right to your opinion but for me he did a fantastic job, any Holly fan knows
Gary's talented as hell. Hats off. He can play that guitar and sing really well.
Busey rides the thin line between genius and insanity and constantly falls on either side
James T LOL!!!!jajjajajajajjaj😜😜😜😜😜😜😜😜😜YO THIS GARY WAS FULL OF GOOD ENERGY MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! REALLY STRONG GOOD ENERGY NOBODY EVEN KNOWS ABOUT HIM!!!!!!!!!!!
I've always thought this myself, and combined with Gary's energetic and outgoing personality, he's certainly someone you'd never forget meeting.
But he always stands up. Might be different but his up🤣🤣🤣
Gary is awesome!
That's a helluva a way to put it, right on.
Feels like it’s loaded with Magic, brilliant!✌️
Gary Busey was cool back in the day! ✌️...It's also nice to see him with his son and see how he kinda paved the way for his son to also become a successful actor.
This was after. He had the accident in 1988. This is from 1991. He even mentions wearing helmets now.
That doesn't mean that accident didn't effect him years after the fact. It may have. At any rate, he was certainly a different guy back then.
Lol his son? Is an actor? Never seen him and never heard of him

I so appreciate how he simply, humbly (?) and honestly admits he was wrong. Plus what a performer !!
THANK YOU GARY for keeping the music alive. RAVE ON
Busey...one of Gods rare prototypes. Too quirky for mass production, too valuable to destroy.
@@alley-man0557 its a misquote from Hunter Thompson.

Truer words have never been spoken before!😂

Damn I love both these guys- Busey and Arsenio. What memories!
Wow, great clip! Really enjoyable to watch. Love Gary, and Arsenio was always good at bringing unique aspects out of people that other hosts wouldn't. Jake Busey's appearance is just icing on the cake. Thanks for the upload!
Gary´s an absolutely genuine and warm human being, and Jake looks more like Gary than Gary does. LOL!
Full of love arsenio was , great example of integrity.
He was exceptionally awkward but seemed extremely genuine.
My brother took me to see Gary busey as buddy holly in the buddy holly story in 1978 . I have been a big fan of buddy holly ever since.
Gary is a strange character. But he has a lot of heart.
best buddy holly tribute singer ever love this guy.
Then you've never seen John Mueller. He is an exact copy of Buddy
Gary is a kind, compassionate human being, and a massive talent.
I think if Buddy was alive, hearing that ovation he got, he would be so proud.
Gary is so lovable.
I was a big fan of Gary Busey. I think he should have won an Oscar for his portrayal of Buddy Holly. He showed how multi talented he was in that movie. I'd definitely buy the sound track.
Gary is PURE GOLD🌠 #buddyholly #rocknroller4life
Gary is my favorite train wreck of all time. He's a high powered mutant. A prototype not meant for mass production.
Aye, okay, Raoul
That is Absolutely Fantastically True ;]
Wow. Gary Busey is actually very talented.
Gary was. Talented..
Did you ever hear Terry Bradshaw sing before, he's actually really good too, sounds a lot like Glen Campbell.
At what ?
God bless Gary 😊
Very talented man and actor. Love Buddy Holly story and never get tired of watching it. God Bless you Gary
Love Buddy Holly and Gary Busey!!!
Gary should have won the Oscar for his portrayal of Buddy Holly. ❤️
Who would've ever guessed that "Buddy Holly" was on Arsenioooooooooooooooo... Hall!!
Thanks for sharing this👍
Very interesting.....I like his version of Buddy.....Buddy, of course, was much more 1950 square- cool, and maltshop. Gary captures the spirit of it, and adds his own twist.....I think buddy would approve.

Busey was still mangling the lyrics after the film's completion.
Gary will always be a badass
My man Arsenio! His show was awesome
the audience cant handle Gary Busey.
god blues Busey the man has rhythm! And pitch! He's got music in him!

So the Music didn't die ?, Thank You Gary !!
Mr busey is an underrated performer this guy has more talent than half of Hollywood
Graham Nash said he broke a string when he played it too wow spooky..
That speaks volumes.
I wish he wouldn't have broken the string, i wanted to hear another Buddy song.
GREAT movie he was in! Actual singing by Gary as well!! WOW!!
There may have been other actors that could have looked more like Buddy Holly than Busig, but just like Lou Diamond Phillips did not exactly resemble Ritchie Valens, both actors were incredible in the way they were able to embody the spirits of the fallen stars
Jake busey looks and sounds so much like his dad.

Always loved Gary Busey...so damn talented!
A very underrated movie
This Guy is your southern Gérard Depardieu🐱🐴🐶💪👨😘😁
Helping keeping the memory of Buddy Holly alive!
Back when late night TV was FUN to watch....NO liberal politics!!!!
No discussion of the Russian agent holding the United States of America hostage in the Oval Office.
That's because we didn't have a self centered, egotistical asshole in office back then.
After the crash he seems to be more open and not nervous at all. Before the wreck he seemed nervous during interviews but the crash didn't change him much. People think the crash completely flipped his personality but that's false it didn't change him that much.
I loved Buddy Holly and I miss the old Gary
Terrific clip - thanks for the upload!
i 😍 gary busey he is a awesome actor and singer i liked him in the movie point break and the buddy holly story
Jake is a great actor in his own right.
I think Gary did a wonderful job in portraying the late Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly Story. I used to have the DVD of it but sadly it got lost.

I don’t think anyone could have played Buddy better than Busey. Busey did that hambone in a movie about that GI getting the firing squad in ww2.
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Like father like son. Haha. They seem to have a great relationship.
Arsenio’s band was awesome! I wonder if Gary still has that guitar
Never realised that guy from Starship Troopers was Gary Buseys son.
What a delightful man.
He was right about the guitar being loaded with magic!!
Just a Question to Gary Busey. Did you inadvertently get the fish Idea from WKRP? Or was it the other way around?
He was the only guy for the role of Buddy he was perfect and the movie was awesome :-)
This guitar is now in the museum of pop art in Seattle.
