  • This is an archival clip from a 1994 production of The Buddy Holly Story at Zachary Scott Theater in Austin, TX. This video is not monetized. I'm the guitarist... Thanks to Mike Koenning (The Drummer) for letting me borrow the tape! I'll add the full credits when I get a chance and can find the program...
    0:00 Backstage at the Apollo
1:12 MC Intro / Not Fade Away
    5:09 Peggy Sue
    7:30 Words of Love
    10:10 Oh Boy!
I've gotten some comments on historical accuracy of the guitars. While this was a professional production that ran for 3 months, it was low budget and most of us played our own instruments. I'm playing a 1989 Rickenbacker 350, which was definitely not period correct, and the actor playing Buddy is playing a Squier Stratocaster, which is also not period correct... :)
This video was made well into the show's run so the performance is very tight. I recently realized that this video continues to get a lot of views so added timestamps and I'm hoping to have a chance to upload some other clips from the show...
Comments are moderated but I certainly enjoy and encourage your feedback...

I have always been fascinated as to what the full story was about the Crickets being accepted at the Apollo and other similar venues. On the Paul McCartney Buddy Holly Story it is clear - they loved being compared with black bands, many of whom they idolized. Buddy was so ahead of his time - and as far as I am concerned the promotion of his story and music is an almost without exception plus. thanks for this posting.

In college, I saw the Buddy Holly Story in the fall of 1978. The head coach of our college football team wanted to make sure that we were "good to go" on Saturday afternoons, so we ALL had to attend "The Varsity", a theater on the outskirts of campus. The Apollo scene was my favorite. This was a different selection of songs for that venue, except for "Oh Boy". Nonetheless, very, very good show. Thanks for posting! Jack from GA

Well. that's a LITTLE closer to what actually happened , however, it took a week to win over the crowd, and that was ONLY after Buddy had the band change from their own songs over to R&B , starting with their version of "Bo Diddley"

A further note, regardless of the Telecaster in the movie, Buddy Holly was actually known for using strats... see buddyhollyandthecrickets(dot)com/equipment.html

Well, seeing as I was paid less than $20/show I couldn't afford to buy a different guitar... ;) The actor playing "Buddy" is using a Squier strat he was able to get the theater to buy for him... I think you're correct that Rick 350's weren't around when Buddy Holly was with us, but it was my only nice guitar back then... (got it in 1989 as my high school graduation present...)

just wish they would get the instruments right..Nicki Sullivan did not play a Rickenbacker and Buddy did not use a Claptonesque Black strat...it's not quibbling..the instruments are essential to any musicians story...a Rickenbacker?? Seriously???

I was paid roughly $20 per show... We used our own instruments aside from Buddy, who is actually playing a Squier Strat... Lol

What's with the "John Lennon" Bacher guitar?

The 1989 Rick 350 was my nicest guitar at the time and had been my high school graduation present... If I'd known when I got it that I'd be closely scrutinized for historical accuracy in a semi-professional production of the Buddy Holly Story five years later I'd have asked for a vintage sunburst Gibson ES 390 --and probably been told to ask for something cheaper... lol
