First White rock performers on the Apollo stage.
The owner booked them "Sight Unseen". Thought they were Black.
At first two nights they were booed, audiences thought they were getting R&B. Third night they were loved.

I've followed Buddy's music since 1981, and it seems to have the magic that so many are missing in today's music. I listen to other performers, but I always come back to Buddy Holly.
I wonder how far he would have gone, had he not died, 18 months is just too short of time we had to see and hear his wonderful music.

I watched the history of the Apollo theater a few days ago on HBO and it's a great shame that there's not much more video footage from this era. In some cases there's more footage of these stars from the time when they travelled to Europe than the US. Otis Redding in uk on Ready steady go. Sonny Boy Williamson at the BBC & the
American Folk Blues Festival in German, tapes that were lost for years. SVT Sweden has Eartha Kitt & the list goes on. I love the clip of Jamaican group Culture singing Natty Dread Taking over on French or maybe Italian tv.

OMG ! Lol he was about to walk off after the first song! This was a moment in history! First white act on that stage! That had to be the first time for black style horns!! A Jam !! A 1,000 times better than the movie!! The guy who booked them thought they were black & they didn’t know the Apallo ! It was only named “Buddy Holly” but when they recorded the demo tape ( in a garage) crickets were in the background. The promoter told the guy “it’s the Buddy Holly guy with the crickets ( in the background- talking about the demo- promo guy booked it & wrote it down and that’s the history of the band’s full name, accidental.

When I was in highschool around 1969. Those glasses were totally out of style, although I enjoyed his songs when they played oldies on the radio, I had never heard of Buddy Holly and didn't hear of him until the 1980's.

See, the thing is, this never happened
This is Hollywood doing what Hollywood does
For the first two nights, they were literally booed off the stage
That's how it actually went down, not some feel-good fairytale
