I saw Linda perform live in 1977. She came on stage barefoot, wearing faded jeans and a white peasant blouse. No lip synced auto tune, no dancers, no crazy light show, just a five piece band and her astonishing talent. They blew the roof off. Oh yeah, I left the show crazy in love with Linda, and I always will be.
Max I saw Linda in 1970 at the Hungry Bear on the Pacific highway in Huntington Beach California! She also came on stage barefoot wearing a pretty blue dress! It was a small club that was getting famous for the people that played there! The dress left nothing to the imagination especially for 19 year old she was so beautiful with such a incredible voice! A long time ago but such a great memory!
'There are two types of men in the world: those who have a crush on Linda Ronstadt and those who have never heard of her.
-- Willie Nelson [or words to that effect]
p.s. I forget the year, but I got to hear/see [heresy? no] Linda Ronstadt during the 'cub scout' period. So, yeah.
Three types...gay men didn't have a crush on Linda.
Singers today could read off their grocery list and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference because of the backing track/vocals nearly makes the singers mic hardly audible.
@@MarkCucchiara sick
This song has been rediscovered recently by its inclusion at the end of a very sad episode of the popular HBO series The Last of Us. So now a new generation knows the beauty and power of her voice. She was 24 when she did this song.
Written be Gary White and recorded by Linda in 1970 she was born in 1946 making her 23 years old. Linda is one of the greatest artists ever. Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, Country Awards, Kennedy Awards, Latin Music Awards, and on and on. This song, about unrequited love was one her earliest songs. “Different Drum” brought national attention to her amazing voice but then she was forced to go solo when her group broke up. She is directly responsible for the group the Eagles. Amazing woman.
70 - 46 = 23
New math 8-P
@@cazgerald9471 😂
Thanks for the math equation
For those who think the math is wrong, consider that the record/release date of the song (1970 June) happened before her birthday (1946 July 15). Linda was almost 24 years old.
Different Drum written by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees and done by Linda like it was meant for her to sing
For me, Linda was my favorite female singer of all time. She was the only female singer to completely fill stadiums equal to all the top rock bands of the 70s. Her musical talent was the most versatile I have ever seen.
The lyric is:
"Caught in my fears
Blinking back the tears
I can't say you hurt me
When you never let me near."
She fears losing him but knows she has never had him.
You're right of course. But her mishearing aligns with the overall sense of the song: the overwhelming power of the writer's feelings about the beloved.
Correct. No one was using "feels" as a noun in the early 70's as far as the American vernacular. That phrase more than likely came from Hip hop influence sometime in the 90's.
Imagine an era of music that had Linda Ronstadt, Karen Carpenter, Olivia Newton John and Anne Murray... all at the same time. 🔥🔥
also Carol King, Streisand, Dolly, Mama Cass & had just lost Janice.
Don't forget Joni , Carly and Carol.
I grew up with my parents listening to them 🥰
Not to mention Barbra Streisand!
A voice that I always thought rank up there with them was Susan Jacks from the Poppy Family. Don't know why she didn't have a solo career after the breakup.
I find myself holding my breath every time I see Linda Ronstadt and hear her voice. This song is truly a reflection of how I feel about her. 😢😊
Linda was so graceful that the entire music industry treated her like their own little sister, but in a great way. Absolutely no person, male or female, said an unkind word to or about her. She was held in such reverence that even Willie Nelson said it best: There are 2 kinds of people in this world, those who love Linda and those who have never met her.
She is still alive
Goosebumps time! I think the word you were looking for is bittersweet. Gorgeous performance by Linda.
You were searching for a word to combine sadness with hope. To me, what this represents is sincerity. Linda Rondstadt delivers this song with such sincerity, it makes the experience very compelling. Another great performance and an awesome reaction. 😊
This is such a beautiful song and her vocals perfectly capture the emotions of unrequited love conveyed by the lyrics and music. I can't imagine anyone else singing this.
agreed!
@@brittreacts Good to see the founder of the band Eagles again.
Andy Williams did a decent version of it but Linda’s is better
Britt, you nailed the balancing contrasts of this song on a first listen! BTW, the words were "caught in my fears" not "feels", but it did sound that way. Linda was nominated for Best Female Contemporary Vocal Performance in the Grammys that year for this song. How she lost I will never know. Her dynamic range and emotional conveyance were remarkable.🙏
Lol, I was getting ready to type that...THANK GOD she didn't say caught up in my "feels"...it would just have ruined it to have such a juvenile lyric.
"Tears" rhymes with "fears," Britt, not "feels." ; )
Linda faced stiff competition for the Grammys that year, although I wouldn't have given my vote to the winner, Dionne Warwick! It would have been a toss-up between Linda and Anne Murray, although probably my vote would have been for Linda.
Who actually won, and for what song, should provide answers...
Linda Ronstadt and Eva Cassidy two of the greatest voices of the Century.
She actually said, "caught in my FEARS, blinking back the tears" just sayin'
I feel like this song captures the feeling of unrequited love perfectly.
yes!!
Linda is a legend...love her
You should be in modeling or acting. Stunning. Linda's voice is top notch. One of the best of that generation.
Linda had a wonderful singing voice. I wish she could have sung forever.
truly!
Linda is quite an extraordinary individual! Absolutely loved to sing, was always there to help people in need, was there to support them emotionally, professionally, jus a really good person! She performed her last concert in 2009 due to losing the ability to sing because of Parkinson's disease. What a tragedy!
She actually has progressive supranuclear palsy, not Parkinson's
The point is that she suffers from a debilitating disease that has robbed her of her true joy, that being the ability to sing. What a tragedy! She must spend the rest of her life with memories of what use to be,
@@boosuedon I recently saw an interview with Linda, where she was asked if she was bummed about not being able to sing anymore. Linda's response was that she still sings "in my head". I loved that because as a retired singer from that same era, I knew exactly what she meant.
One of my absolute favorites of Linda's. Those are golden pipes in play here. Love Linda and all the music she poured into our lives. Thank You Linda.
Give a listen to her version of Desperado when you can. It is truly an amazing vocal perormance.
Linda Ronstadt was truly an angel. She could sing so soft and pretty and follow it with a serious belter!
yes!!
That voice was magic. So tragic she could no longer sing later in her life, but what she left for us is unmatched. Angelic.
*Can* no longer sing…she’s still alive ❤
Certainly one of the best pop performances ever. Linda, you're a goddess.
she is amazing!
Beautiful...Caught in her fears....is the line I believe....so great to see your appreciation for this song. Love your reactions 😊
This is a song about unrequited love. Which is something a lot of us can relate to. This version of the song has been edited down for the program she was performing on. But if you listen to the full song with the entirety of the lyrics you’ll see the full despair of it. And even the final notes of the strings at the end leaves the song, just as the emotion, unresolved and without closure. Just as unrequited love feels.
I always thought this song was written specifically for me, and I wondered how such a weird thing could be true; it reflects a true situation in my life when that began when I was 15 years old and continued for several more years and beyond. I did try everything I knew, it did hurt when he overlooked me, and it’s true . . . . It did hurt me, and I did love him, for a long, long time….
I love watching young people react to hearing Linda for the first time. It's just like it was when I first heard her sing this song in 1976. It had already been around for a while, but did not become well known until she hit it big with When Will I Be Loved. Then everyone woke up and started listening to her. "Her 1977 album, Hasten Down The Wind" is a pop classic.
Great reaction to Young Linda...Check out her more seasoned power with La Cigarra from the concert with Mariachi Vargas off her album Songs For My Father. Amazing how long she can hold a note with absolutely no waver in her voice.
It's the breath control for me. Watch and listen how long between taking breaths. It makes the phrasing irresistible. Also, they skipped the last verse in this performance.
Wait for the day you'll go away
Knowing that you warned me
Of the price I'd have to pay
Life's full of flaws. Who knows the cause?
Living in the memory of a love that never was.
I caught that too...then went and grabbed the lyrics to post....but ya beat me to it! Great job!
This was on the Glen Campbell show and they always abbreviated songs to fit their format. I wish they hadn’t done it with this song though 😢
I saw Linda in concert in the late 70’s at the university of Missouri. She wore a pair of blue shorts with a Cub Scout shirt and no shoes. The ticket price was $7.50! At least we used to be able to afford to go to concerts. Linda is one of my top five female singers. Thanks Brit 🙏🏼👵🏼☮️💜
What you feel is heartbreak. A universal truth
She made heartbreak and despair sound so beautiful
Im 62, ... my wife was 10 years older, when i ment her in baton rouge Louisiana, in 1978, she and Linda looked like twins, especially when she wore the big whoop earrings,.....she passed away in 2014, ... ever time i hear and see Linda, it kills me, .but...i can't look away, .
Linda did so many "torch songs" and was such a master of them, that I always used to wonder, who was that guy who hurt you so bad? (And, of course, thought she should know that I would never treat her like that, lol).
my God....could anyone sing this better ??? she's the best ever
She has an amazing catalog and has done just about every kind of music imaginable. Please check out her live performances of “La Charreada” or “La Cigarra”. Dazzling!! Great reaction 🌺✌️
No desperation its actually feelings. We expressed feelings back in the day.
Linda's voice would, and still does, to this day, give me chills. It was gorgeous and powerful. It was like no other.
My momma played this endlessly. Thanks for a good memory. ❤
Linda was in a vocal universe all her own. Powerful and tender. Warmth and wonder. Rockin or crooning. Those other gals couldn't carry Ronstadt's toothbrush.
As a teenager in the 70s, I listened to this song so much after I was so sad because of a guy I had a crush on. One of my brother's friends. We had albums back then with covers that were artistic. Many had the lyrics in the inside of the cover and I would listen for hours to music and read or sing along with the lyrics. My first memory of doing that was as a young girl with the soundtrack to Elvis's Love Me Tender.
Amazing what music can trigger in us, memories it brings back.
Linda Ronstadt's voice is so beautiful. Thank you ❤
What a song. What a voice. Beautiful 🤗
agreed!!
Linda Ronstadt was 24 when that song came out. She's had an incredible number of awesome hits but this is one of her best.
Thanks for reacting to this but i'm still living in hope that you will react to one of her Mexican (Spanish) songs. La Charreada or La Cigarra really show her range. It's not just a performance it's a spectacle, complete with mariachi band and live audience. Also, "down so low." The live version will take you to church. Hope you have the day you deserve too ❤
I'm not a fan of big band music, but I think Linda did an album of big band, swing(?) music. Her voice is so pure that maybe I will give it a listen
@@rubroken I don't think it fits into the "Big Band Music" (1940s) genre but I might be wrong. There is a Big Band behind her but the music is more 50s-60s. The kind of stuff you'd expect Judy Garland or Debbi Reynolds to do when they were singing in nightclubs.
They are known as the great American songbook/ standards with the Nelson Riddle orchestra but let's face it, anything by Linda is worth a listen. It's simply a case of, if you don't like this style, try another, there's something for everyone. Enjoy your journey 😀
"Canciones para mi padre"...
Beautiful, sad, emotional, gorgeous song❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😢
Caught in my fears
Blinking back the tears.
It's awesome how you say welcome back to the party love it awesome video great reaction by you again thank you so much for sharing this video with us Britt.👍
She sang this on the Glen Campbell show in 1971. She was only 25 years old. Check out her duet with Johnny Cash, I never will marry. After she left the Stone Poneys she discovered two future superstars, Glen Fry and Don Henley of the Eagles. They played guitar for her until they left to form the Eagles.
And drums (Henley)
@@rogerdaly6326 You are so right Roger. And a drummer who sings and drums.
@_._._Miss_brittreacts Brit love your reviews. I look every day. I am a former songwriter and love all types of great music. If you ever want to find some gems, reach out. I am 62 years old, and have heard and played music for decades. Congrats on hitting 100k. I predict you will hit 500k. I believe that. Keep up the great reviews. Good luck moving forward. I'll be watching. Curt
Linda is indeed singing to someone in particular, and the sum total of all the emotion in this beautifully performed song constitutes the ultimate "Man, you f'd up dude!" song ever recorded.
This is the 1970 hit that was her solo debut. Previously, she'd been in the Stone Poneys and had a hit called, "Different Drum" in 1967. But this song was the one where so many of us fell in love with her.
I didn't think this one was going to make me tear up, but it sure did. Another voice that I dearly miss. We love you, Linda!
I was overseas in the service in the mid 60s, and we tuned into armed forces radio as often as we could. And there was Linda. She brought us home in our minds every time. I will always thank her for that.
Known as a Torch song…unrequited love. Carrying a torch for someone who doesn’t feel the same back.
IT DOESN'T MATTER ANYMORE is a song you will definitely like, as Linda brings her forlorn voice to delivery to the news.
But if you want hear the California sound she helped bring to the 7o's, along with musical acts like Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, Eagles, and others, try these great songs from her catalog.
POOR, POOR, PITIFUL ME,
TUMBLING DICE,
and personal early favorite of mine SILVER THREADS AND GOLDEN NEEDLES. It us truly a damned shame that she has been robbed of her voice and can no longer make appearances. The interest in her catalog remains strong as new listeners, like you and other You Tubers, discover what she meant to us who grew up with her. I wish her well with her health issues and thank her for giving us the fantastic music we atill enjoy. Linda will always be in our ❤️ hearts.
Linda had a voice that would rock your soul.
Smokey Robinson showed his respect by singing with her many times
Linda had a crush on Smoky Robinson for a long time
You should listen to the full original version. There is an entire verse missing from this one. “Wait for the day, you’ll go away, knowing that you warned me of the price I’d have to pay and life’s full of flaws, who knows the cost? Living in the mem’ry of a love that never was.”
One òf favorite songs by her. I love her voice! ❤❤❤
I have been listening to Linda Ronstadt since 1967. She just kept getting better and better. This song is fairly early on, 1969-70. Linda would have been maybe 22-23 in this video. She's stopped performing due to degenerative neurological problems. This is a world tragedy, to me. I love her singing. Apparently, so do you! Just goes to show we both have great taste.😎
I was lucky enough to see her perform with the Eagles and pure Prairie league in Denver Co at Mile High stadium, beautiful
Is that when Vince Gill was with PPL?
The last thing I said to my high school girlfriend... sigh. Nearly 45 years ago now. And yea, i still love her. Now I'm all melancholy.
Linda Ronstadt was 24 years old at the time.
Actually she sang "Caught in my fears". She was 23/24 when she recorded this song.
I first saw Linda on TV with the Stone Poneys … I was smitten! Saw her in person three times and owned her vinyl records and CDs. What a talent!
She had God given talent. Such a beautiful voice and soul. Amen.
Hauntingly beautiful. As good as when I first heard it.
Linda also has several Spanish language albums, and the songs are beautiful, even though I don't understand that language. Also, you can thank her for the formation of The Eagles band!!&! She helped form that group!!&!
I was a teenager in the 70s and had a major crush on her 😍😍
Oh goodie I’ve been waiting a long long time for you to react to this one - one of my favorite songs of Linda’s and thanks Britt for finally reacting
She had it all...
Her breath control is remarkable
I remember back in 1968 sitting on my rack in Chitose Japan listening to her and the Sone Ponys singing a Different Drum. One of my favorite songs she sang was Blue Bayou.
This is considered by many to one of three nearly impossible songs to cover due to Linda’s amazing range and vocal agility.
Linda Ronstadt had ridiculous vocal talent and is considered to be a top 5 female singer of all time.
she is amazing!
beyond "top 5 of all time"@@brittreacts
Beautiful Chicana talent!!! Mexican American....
Haunting is the word you're looking for! Love all your reactions!
I was blessed to be young when Linda would come perform at the Palomino Club in North Hollywood, CA. She would be absent for awhile, then she'd show up after breaking up with the latest guy and belt out her "he done me wrong songs." Good times!!!
Every time Linda was given advice about her career she ignored it. She was told not to do light opera, and then she did Pirates of Penzance and it was a huge success. She was told not to sing American Standards, ignored it and it was a huge success. Finally, was told not to release albums in Spanish, she did it and had the biggest selling Spanish language album ever.
True love is one of the most powerful feelings, when person who loves could sacrifice own life to make possible that an object of love could live.
She’s singing about the one that got away that, when in fact, she never had him in the first place.
The song is bitter sweet, unrequited love.
I forgot how much I loved her when I was a child
she is great!!
Linda...or this song.... couldn't be any better....My GOD
Linda loved to sing ballads. But she could rock out too.
Thank you it was great
She was 24 when she recorded this song in 1970.
12 Grammy wins in 28 nominations, a Latin Grammy, an Emmy winner, Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame Inductee, Academy of Country Music: Best New Female Artist, and an Album of the Year, Country Music Association: Vocal Event of the Year and a 2019 Kennedy Center Honors Honoree. Quite a career.
A great singer singing a great song. I gotta love it!! If you have never been there, you dont know what she is singing about, how it makes you feel.
A xong over 50 years old....makes it timeless....by, the near perfect voice of my generation....
I like the way you use your voice to illustrate something catching your interest in the artist your reacting to. Your time in choir was not wasted.
I think the word you were searching for is bittersweet.
Wonderful reaction and memories from the past. In this performance she rather reminded me of Diana Ankudinova. It’s what I remember seeing when I first heard Diana. She reminded me of this Linda Ronstadt. Diana has a new song “Romeo and Juliet”. The lyrics are really amazing and the song is beautiful. Much love and appreciation from California.❤️🍀🌈😇🙏🏻❣️
We loved Linda singing...my brother used to call this "The Bastard who left her at the alter song" hahahha. one time I said back "I'd be glad to take his place."
This is an unserious song about a crush on someone she was unable to draw one response from. But Linda convinces us by singing extravagantly, as only she can.
Hi Britt. Linda is not singing "caught in my feels" it's "caught in my fears."
The lyrics are "caught in my fears, blinking back the tears..." Not "caught in my feels"
Linda is one of the greatest vocalists of all time. She, and Eva Cassidy...just get right to my heart. Both of their voices have sadly been silenced (in different ways), but will FOREVER be treasured. Thank you for sharing your God given gifts with us, ladies.
This makes me miss the 70’s. Linda was amazing.
I have always loved this Woman's voice. Shw was prolific during the '70's, 80's and '90's with a very diverse repertoire. My opinion is that she was the foremost Female Vocalist of that era. To appreciate her vocal capability, I recommend you review her singing 'Poor Wandring One from the Pirates of Penzance movie in which she was the female lead.
This song was on the 'Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour' in 1970 and Linda was born on July 15, 1946, so she is about 24 years old in this video.
This woman is the best mezzo-soprano to lend her voice to popular music!
It's not "Caught in my FEELS." It's "Caught in my FEARS." Here's that entire verse:
"Caught in my fears
Blinking back the tears
I can't say you hurt me
When you never let me near."
You should also look up the rest of the lyrics. They're cool.
