"His daddy ain't 💩!!!" James Garner, the OG TV Maverick, playing Bret's dad, is some great legacy casting. And it makes everything he does to and for Bret better in future watches.
I went to see this in the cinema and cried when James Garner came on because it reminded me of being little and watching it with my gran when I was little. She lived on the other side of the world to me at the time. As soon as I got home I made a long and expensive phone call 😊
James Garner Did play Brett Maverick but what no one seems to remember is he also played Beauregard Maverick AKA Pappy In one Ep. Brett & Bart ( Jack Kelly ) ride into town for Pappy's wedding. I don't remember the details but at the end of the Ep. the 3 B B & B Had to make a hasty exit out of town followed by a Posse close behind, the Posse is ambushed and scared away by an unknown gunman we find out is Uncle Bentley played by you guessed it Jack Kelly. In conclusion 1 maybe 2 of the original characters played by the original actors, ( Beauregard /Pappy) & ( Uncle Bentley ) ( I thought I seen Jack Kelly in the background as 1 of the Gamblers ? ) That's the real Beauty of the Movie.
Alfred Molina, the bad guy you kept recognizing was also Doc Octopus in the Spider-Man movies. I first saw him in Raiders of the Lost Ark. He's a brilliant actor.
James Garner played Maverick for years on TV. Very popular actor. He also co-starred in The Notebook. Mel was wonderful! I have fond memories of watching this one with my mom.
I always call this movie Chemistry 101. The scenes between Mel, James, and Jodie are pure gold. I also love this vision of the west as essentially being nothing but con artists trying to rip each other off. Awesome. Oh, and Graham Greene is bloody brilliant. Chief Joseph is too funny for words. By the way, James Garner starred in one of history's great television series, The Rockford Files, back in the seventies. His character, Jim Rockford, is absolutely fantastic.
I love the Mel Gibson - Danny Glover Lethal Weapon reunion in the bank robbery scene; right down to the theme music cues. "I'm getting too old for this sh!t"
Not really related to movies but you made me think of this great song from your comme t lol.. female rapper probably nobody knows because she's not selling her a*s like everyone else anyway... Snow the product song called - petty
One of the great modern Westerns.Right up there with Tombstone. Great humor and casting. LOVE that it's a movie that continues from the original James Garner Maverick series.
James Garner who plays Marshall Zane Cooper (Maverick's father) is the actor who played Maverick in the old '50s-'60s TV show on which this movie is based. And if you like movies with twists set in the old west, BIG HAND FOR A LITTLE LADY. is the absolute best.
Great movie, and if I remember right, Waylen Jennings had a brief appearance on here, I think as the guy on a ferry who drops his gun, but tries say it belongs to the woman standing next to him.
James Garner was the original Maverick in the 60s TV series! He also had a series in the late 70s "Rockford Files" He was a popular actor in his days, may he RIP! This was a great, clever, fun movie! One of my favorites!
Never seen "Maverick" before. Was not prepared for that Graham Greene sequence, not at all. Nearly fell off my chair when the one and only "Kicking Bird" entered the scene... Casting Greene for that part in "Maverick" was genius.
I love this movie, it's just clever, and I'm a poker junkie, biggest tournament I did was 150 people, the only tournament I ever took first in, was an incredible moment. My boys dad won the wsop years and years ago, I got to see the bracelet, so very cool. I just love the game so much and somehow got pretty good at it.
31:55 It's Alfred Molina. You may remember him from such films as "Raiders of the Lost Ark" ("Adiós, señor!") and the "Spider-Man" franchise (Dr. Octopus).
Piece of trivia you might be interested in: The original TV series was supposed to be a serious western and the first 2 episodes were just that. While filming the 3rd episode, they had an elaborate fight scene still to shoot, but they were running out of daylight and it was the last day of filming. Someone got the brilliant idea to throw everyone into a nearby cornfield. They filmed cornstalks waving to sounds of "Oof!" and "Smack!" and the like. Every few seconds someone would be thrown out of the cornfield an address the people watching with a silly or witty comment and then dive back in to the cornfield to fight some more. Audiences loved it so much that they decided to keep the comedic irreverent tone through the rest of the series. It's what it became known for. If they hadn't have done that, we might have been watching a brutally serious remake instead of the fun, crazy film that we got.
Johnny Hardin, the gunfighter from the first poker game was a real historical person and very deadly. His full name was John Wesley Hardin and was considered one of the deadliest outlaws in history. That's why Maverick dropped his chips in shock when he heard the name...
"My old pappy always used to say: There is no more deeply satisfying religious experience... than cheatin' on a cheater." "I never said that once. You've been misquoting me all your life." "What, we're going to quibble over fine points?" "You never even get close. Give me some credit." Fun Fact: The first film released on Kodak's EXR 2386 polyester print stock. Not A Remake Fact: James Garner, who plays Zane Cooper, was the original Bret Maverick in Maverick (1957). So this movie is a sequel to the original series. Poker Enthusiast Fact: In the final scene Maverick (Mel Gibson) shows his cards one at a time; this is called "slow-rolling" and is a big breach of table etiquette in poker, even in modern times. Cameos Cameos Fact: Reba McEntire is an extra in the opening poker scene of the movie. Margot Kidder is Margret Mary, one of the pilgrims robbed of their mission money. The film's cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond appears as landscape painter Albert Bierstadt. Charlie Brown Fact: Jodie Foster's character's gracelessness in the film stems from the first scene she shot, when she waited for Mel Gibson to help her down from the stagecoach. Instead, he took her parasol and walked away. She tried to get down alone, and flopped to the ground. Director Richard Donner liked it so much that he kept the shot in the film, and staged more scenes of Foster stumbling, being dumped through windows, etc.
I had a rule at my LAN parties back in the day, if you fell asleep on the floor, you got the Clippy clip. After a few bad haircuts, NOBODY fell asleep at my LAN parties.
As a kid I got to stay up late once a week to watch Star Trek: The Next Generation with my parents. However, one time my parents were both working an early shift and so they left me before the end of the episode. I assured them I’d put myself to bed…but I didn’t. Because this film started immediately after the TNG episode and as soon as I heard that old timey western music I knew I had to watch it!! It was only like the third film non kids film I’d ever seen and it was a magical experience. It’s never lost that childhood joy for me and I’m delighted to see you watching it.
I remember it like it was yesterday the audience reaction in the theatre that moment when Mel comes face to masked face with the bank robber, who is clearly Danny Glover, they stop to look at each other breaking the fourth wall, then resume running from the law where Danny clearly says, 'I'm too old for this shit!!!' Gradial trickles of delayed laughter as pockets of audience catch on to what's going on, then big laugh, Glover says iconic line, wild applause. It helps Richard Donner who directed this movie also directed all four of the Lethal Weapons. I think he had an 'in' with these two guys.
Awesome Classic...... The Spanish Gentlemen Angel you can't place is "Alfred Molina" He played "Doc Oc" in the Spiderman Movies, and was the "Throw me the Idol" guy in "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Chief Joseph is played by Graham Greene is also in "Dances with Wolves" Alot of the "Background" poker players were actors from 60's TV Westerns and Country Music, including: The Guy with the cards up his sleeve is Clint Black, Country Music Artist, He actually sings the song in the Background (Good Run of Bad Luck)..... The White Haired/Beared Gentleman is Denver Pyle, "Uncle Jesse" from TV's "Dukes of Hazard"...... The couple with the Gun was Kathy Matea (Country Singer) and Waylon Jennings (Country Singer)........
Mel had one of the all-time great runs of great movies in a row on top of the Lethal Weapon series and Mad Max trilogy. You still have buried treasures of forgotten Mel gems to unearth just waiting. Payback 1999 Conspiracy Theory 1998 Bird On A Wire 1989 Tequila Sunrise 1988
This movie is a who’s who of westerns and country music. Even the stage driver played Wishbone on the old Rawhide series. 😂 By the time they got to the boat, almost every new face was someone recognizable. So much fun just seeing how many you can put a name to.
Dang! I can't watch this when it first drops...that sucks. This is such a terrifically fun western comedy, one of my favorites...with so many awesome references to and cameos from Mel Gibson's other films and from the original series. I can't wait to see which people he recognizes, and which ones he does not...but I can't watch until tomorrow morning.😢😜😁
I love this movie. I remember seeing it as a kid, I didn't understand a lot of it but I appreciate it so much more as an adult and just seems better every time I see it. Classic comedy.
33:02 that’s Dan Hedaya. 33:09 the one with the gun is Clint Black who sang the song “Good Run of Bad Luck” that was playing in the background. 33:30 that gun holder was Denver Pyle who played Uncle Jesse in the “Dukes of Hazzard” tv series in the late 70s early 80s. 33:54 Alfred Molina who played Doc Ock in “Spider-Man”, he was in “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, he was in “Boogie Nights”, “The Da Vinci Code”, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” with Nicolas Cage, many other movies, tv shows and animated voiceovers. 35:35 this couple are country music artists Kathy Mattea and Outlaw singer Waylon Jennings 38:26 look how cool Maverick was he gave the Commodore money to stay in the game cause he didn’t have enough to call the hand. 39:22 see they can’t say that Maverick switched that card cause Angel slid it over to him and it stayed on the table until he picked it up to show them. Gotta love the way Maverick revealed that Ace. 40:19 remember majority of people don’t have guns cause they weren’t allowed. 42:06 no cause Maverick would’ve gotten the money back and the Commodore would have to find someone to hire to rob Maverick 43:59 did you notice how Coop’s left gun was reversed that was set for Maverick to use it. 45:06 I wish they would’ve done a sequel where they chased Annabelle for their money. You should check a couple episodes of the tv show “Maverick” where James Garner plays the role of Bret Maverick. Look at James Garner in other movies like “Space Cowboys” with Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones and Donald Sutherland (who just passed away yesterday). Another movie he’s in is “My Fellow Americans” with Jack Lemmon. There’s also two older movies called “Support Your Local Sheriff” & “Support Your Local Gunfighter”. They both star James Garner and Harry Morgan
So.....the guy helping Danny Glover rob the bank was Country music star Hal Ketcham. The first "cheater" tossed off the boat was another country star...Clint Black, who's song was being played during the scene. Love this movie. It was a great suggestion by your buddy.
The guy you said you recognized several times is Alfred Molina. He played Dr Octopus in Spiderman 2 and Spiderman-No Way Home. Also James Garner who is playing Marshal Cooper was the original Maverick in the tv series in the late 1950’s-early 60’s. **edit** sorry I posted this half way through the reaction before you figured it out. 😂
Graham Greene also voiced Rains Fall in Red Dead Redemption 2 was Kicking Bird in Dances With Wolves and Mogi in Skins. Great movies he is also Oneida nation that is the little brother nation to us Mohawks.
GREAT CHOICE, Jay! You did good again! Can’t wait to watch you laugh your butt off. Give those co-pilots a hug for me, brother. I’m love you lots! Paul
This is one of my favorite "I'll always watch it when it's on" one-off movies from the 90s days along with things like Can't Hardly Wait, Stay Tuned, Clueless, Tommy Boy and Nothing But Trouble. Just always a good time and has me smiling.
Used to watch the original show before I saw this movie, so the twist was an extra cherry on top. So were all the names, Bret, Bert, Bart, such good Easter eggs. So were all the players towards the end. Great dang movie, cheers.
Listen... lol...! If all you want for yer birthday is to watch a movie, you should get it. So thank god yer patreon members picked this in the poll. Woulda been cool if Blane (Blaine?) sat alongside with you, but that was a fun watchalong. Also, shout out to Donner's other cameo, Margot Kidder :D
James Garner starred in MULTIPLE TV shows called "Maverick" starting in 1957 and going to the late 70s, right up until westerns died (I did have to look this up).
Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster would make another movie (which she also directed) called The Beaver, released in 2011. Great performance from Gibson, and the movie deals with some pretty heavy stuff.
"His daddy ain't 💩!!!"
James Garner, the OG TV Maverick, playing Bret's dad, is some great legacy casting. And it makes everything he does to and for Bret better in future watches.
I wrote the same comment and then seen your comment so I gave yours a thumbs up😊

I came down here to say this same thing!
James played the part of Bert's and Bart's in the TV show " Pappy" guest star Adam West.
James Garner Did play Brett Maverick but what no one seems to remember is he also played Beauregard Maverick AKA Pappy In one Ep. Brett & Bart ( Jack Kelly ) ride into town for Pappy's wedding. "Hello, noble savage."
Graham Greene is my favorite part of this movie.
So underrated. So hilarious. Mel is the GOAT.
Mel is an anti-Semitism c**😢😢😢t but he's still one of my favourite actor's and he spit spits truth
Alfred Molina, the bad guy you kept recognizing was also Doc Octopus in the Spider-Man movies. I first saw him in Raiders of the Lost Ark. He's a brilliant actor.
One of the few movies based on a TV series that matches the actual heart and style of the show it was based on
Maverick to me is like the movie Tremors. A really well made film that you can watch always again and again and it is still fun and great. :)
James Garner played Maverick for years on TV. Very popular actor. He also co-starred in The Notebook. Mel was wonderful! I have fond memories of watching this one with my mom.
He was also in two funny westerns called Support Your Local Sheriff and Support Your Local Gunfighter.

Mel definitely has some of the best comedic timing. Love when he makes comedies
I loved Maverick as a kid. It was so funny and fun. I haven't seen it in ages. The cast was stellar!
I love this movie so damn much. Funny, clever, and a great fk'ing cast!! ❤️
I did not like the way they portrayed Native Americans as money hungry sex fiends. They were most peace loving pacifists on the planet. Maybe ever.
Seeing Jodie at the poker table - the moment my 11 year old self knew I was straight.
I love the Mel Gibson - Danny Glover Lethal Weapon reunion in the bank robbery scene; right down to the theme music cues. "I'm getting too old for this sh!t"
The absolute pettiness level all through this movie is perfection.

Man in the Iron mask! Starring Leonardo di Caprio. No one else has reacted to it! 👀

One of the great modern Westerns.Right up there with Tombstone. Great humor and casting. LOVE that it's a movie that continues from the original James Garner Maverick series.

If JL wants to see a great western with amazing scenery, he should watch "The Searchers." Best western ever made.
James Garner played Maverick in the original TV series, he also played Jim Rockford in "The Rockford Files".
Back in the day. Love James Garner.
Uncle Jesse from Dukes of Hazzard jumping off the boat. "Thank you Mr. Coop". 🤣

37:10 -- That hidden spy in the background is hilarious! 😁
My favorite scene is when he gets together with his Indian buddies and fakes his demise. That makes me laugh so hard. Everybody cheats everybody 😂❤
Unforgiven, tombstone, and maverick all one after another! Great time for watching movies at the theaters.
Danny Glover’s (Murtaugh) cameo was the best! Killed me. 😂😂😂 “Oh, I’m too old for this shit!” 😤
Love this movie. Saw it with my dad. He is a fan of the TV show. He actually called James Garner being Maverick's dad.
Mine did the same thing.

The "slow rolling" was more of disrespect to his opponent than anything else. You know he did not like him at all 😂
You missed the cameo of the late great Waylon Jennings: "No, my wife does and it's her gun."
Danny Glovers like Cedric the Entertainer "he's beinging bow legs back" 😅

GREAT CHOICE, Jay! You did good again! Can’t wait to watch you laugh your butt off.
Give those co-pilots a hug for me, brother. I’m love you lots!

This is one of my favorite "I'll always watch it when it's on" one-off movies from the 90s days along with things like Can't Hardly Wait, Stay Tuned, Clueless, Tommy Boy and Nothing But Trouble. Just always a good time and has me smiling.
Damn I love Can't hardly wait
Used to watch the original show before I saw this movie, so the twist was an extra cherry on top. So were all the names, Bret, Bert, Bart, such good Easter eggs. So were all the players towards the end. Great dang movie, cheers.
Alfred Molina was Doctor Octopus in Spiderman 2 by Sam Raimi
24:26 This actor has played a US American Indian in a ton of movies but he's actually Canadian.
The old man who jumped off the ferry played uncle Jesse in THE DUKES OF HAZARD
Listen...
Happy Birthday Blank🎉!!’n
still laughin fromface at 44:22
gotta put "contact" on the list just cuz jodie foster got me thinking
The older guy with the white beard forced to jump off the boat played Uncle Jessie in the original TV show The Dukes of Hazzard.
