What a fantastic film! The humor, the western tropes, the action, the twists! The CAMEO! A film I’d have never watched, but so glad I did. Richard Donner continues to impress as a filmmaker 👏 I hope you enjoyed my Maverick movie reaction & commentary.

Original Movie: Maverick (1994)
This was such a fun movie! What are your thoughts on Maverick?
I thought it was a great comedy, and then Graham Greene showed up, and made it even better!
Such a great fun western comedy.
The combination Richard Donner and Mel Gibson is golden. Danny Glover's cameo was great. And James Garner who played Maverick in the tv series and Jodie Foster we're wonderful. So glad you finally reacted to this Gem.
Back in the day I used to watch reruns of the original 1950s-60s TV series this was based off of, the. Oboe was a pretty great adaptation in some ways, but there is only so much you can do with a characters that’s developed over 100+ episodes sequencing it into an hour and half movie.
I've always loved this movie! The various ways they swindled each other was highly amusing, and then the reveal of him being Pappy was fantastic. Just a fun romp all around.
It´s my "comfort" film. I watched it occasionally to relax, Jodie Foster is really charming in this, it is said that Mel Gibson, always the troublemaker not far away from using strong language was on his best behaviour around her when filming...
Those twists and plots sure are silly but the way they all perform makes it just such an enjoyable watch that I didn´t mind to watch it over and over...:)
Didn't catch it the first time, but re-watching you can see Cooper rolling his eyes whenever Maverick says "My old Pappy always used to say..."
Pretty much anybody who was anybody in old-time Westerns was in this film. It was a pleasure to see them all crop up in the same place. Many of them are gone now. Thanks for this one, Chris.
One of the perks to seeing this movie back in the day, is recognizing all the cameos. It’s a veritable who’s who of old western stars and country music legends.
Also, nice to see a cameo from Margot Kidder, not just because she reunited with her Superman director, but because she co-starred with James Garner I'm a short-lived 70's western TV show called NICHOLS.
I absolutely adored this movie as a young kid, when it came out, and I'm always impressed with how well it holds up. Couldn't click on this quick enough! 😊
I loved James Garner as Maverick so much, that I named my beloved Pomeranian and best friend, Maverick. I had the hugest crush on James Garner because of the OG Maverick. James Garner is the GOAT playing Maverick and I loved this movie since they brought him in. RIP James Garner RIP to my beloved best friend Maverick who was 14 at his passing on Jan 6, 2022. Great reaction and thank you for watching this great movie!!
'Maverick' was a jolly cowboy TV series from back in the late 50s, early 60s starring James Garner. I was only 8 when the series ended but I still recall it vividly.
Quick fun fact...in the original TV show, James Garner did play Bret Maverick...but there were 3 other actors that played Maverick as well...there was Bart Maverick and Brent Maverick...and Roger Moore appeared as Beau Maverick, in 14 episodes I believe.
Oh, that's why they joke about his name all movie.
@@pulkmees Yup 😁
That's one of the 2 main reasons I first watched this movie. The other was Mel Gibson.
Jack Kelly played BRET Maverick. Not 'Brent'.
sorry, Garner was Bret - Kelly was Bart.
“Someone somewhere is gonna do somethin’l” Truer words have never been spoken!
I am the nephew of James Garner and originally my uncle was not in the script, but Mel Gibson would not do the movie without my uncle, Mel said my uncle was Bret Maverick, so they rewrote the script. My uncle called me to say there was a twist at the end and there was. My uncle sent me a copy of the movie along with a lobby poster signed by him, Mel and Jody Foster. I recently donated the poster to Mavericks Bar and Casino in Lakeside Montana. The owners had a pinball machine made in honor of Maverick the Movie, they deserved the poster. My uncle would have been thrilled. Stop at Mavericks and see the only Maverick Pin Ball Machine and Posters, bring quarters, Jim's nephew Brian in Hungry Horse Montana
Such a great, fun, entertaining movie all the way through! I love Jodie in this, would personally have given her a supporting actress Oscar nom. Enjoyed your reaction!
I love this move, two other great movies along this line with James Garner are "Support your Local Gunfighter" and "Support your Local Sheriff" Both are western comedies.
Remember watching the original series. Garner movies?.
Support your local sherrif.
Support your local gunslinger
the tape on the coin to do it again ha ha yes loved those movies. the blood on the floor with no jail bars ha ha awesome movie.
This is my third favorite James Garner role. His series, the Rockford files with its narration, was fabulous, and his role as Hendley "the scrounger" in The Great Escape was fantastic.
Based on the TV series of the same name, as James Garner played the original Brett Maverick. Critics called it "Fast and funny! It's Lethal Weapon meets Butch Cassidy."
one of my top 5 favourite Westerns, and just a pure blast to watch.
Another "modern western" that I love is "Quigley Down Under". Great to react to.
It's such a fun movie. Thanks for the reaction! Many of us knew he was the dad, because this movie isn't the first Maverick. Look into it. :D
Brilliant! Thank you so much for reacting to this movie - I hadn't seen it in years and I forgot how fun it is.
Which reminds me - if you liked James Garner's (Cooper in this film) performance, definitely check out Victor Victoria (1982) if you haven't seen it yet. It stars Garner and Julie Andrews in an absolutely hilarious romp of a movie.
Honestly, it was such a fun movie on a day I needed some fun. Love that. I haven't heard of that movie, but that combo does sound like a blast!
@@CasualNerdReactionsoh yes please react to that! they did the later stage version too, but the movie is great first watch. the musical and movie are fantastic for different parts. very quotable and ahead of its time
There’s a classic quotable line in one of the Maverick TV episodes where they parodied “Gunsmoke”, as Bret has to stay one step ahead of a Marshal who keeps repeatedly trying to run him out of town. Finally, it comes down to an old-fashioned Gunsmoke-style street showdown-The marshal walks out into the street, blasts all of both six-shooters, and at the end of the street, we hear James Garner’s voice: “Want me to stand a little CLOSER, Marshal?”
(My dad used to quote that line for years, growing up, and I had no idea what that was from.). 😂
The original TV series with James Garner was my dad's favorite. He never missed an episode.
"My old pappy always used to say: There is no more deeply satisfying religious experience... than cheatin' on a cheater."
"I never said that once. You've been misquoting me all your life."
"What, we're going to quibble over fine points?"
"You never even get close. Give me some credit."
Fun Fact: The first film released on Kodak's EXR 2386 polyester print stock.
Not A Remake Fact: James Garner, who plays Zane Cooper, was the original Bret Maverick in Maverick (1957). So this movie is a sequel to the original series.
Poker Enthusiast Fact: In the final scene Maverick (Mel Gibson) shows his cards one at a time; this is called "slow-rolling" and is a big breach of table etiquette in poker, even in modern times.
Cameos Cameos Fact: Reba McEntire is an extra in the opening poker scene of the movie. Margot Kidder is Margret Mary, one of the pilgrims robbed of their mission money. The film's cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond appears as landscape painter Albert Bierstadt.
Charlie Brown Fact: Jodie Foster's character's gracelessness in the film stems from the first scene she shot, when she waited for Mel Gibson to help her down from the stagecoach. Instead, he took her parasol and walked away. She tried to get down alone and flopped to the ground. Director Richard Donner liked it so much that he kept the shot in the film and staged more scenes of Foster stumbling, being dumped through windows, etc.
tons of other cameos with clint black being the first cheater as my favorite. country singer stars galore. loved it!
Ok so Zane is the original Maverick from the tv series, and this movie is a love letter to all the old west movie and tv show fans and also showing those stars of yesteryear as cameos in this movie. I was so psyched when this movie came out being a big old west movie/tv show fan growing up and it did not disappoint. Very fun movie
Awesome reaction great job :)
Maverick is one of the best, most cozy movies of all times. I love this film. Whenever you've had a hard week, grab a beer or some green and some friends or your beloved and just lay back in the couch to this.
I loved this movie growing up! I taped it off of HBO, rewatched that VHS, all we had back in the day, over and over. I'm so glad you watched Lethal Weapon first for that tiny cameo.
Quite possibly my favourite film! Glad to see others finding it, it's one that often gets missed I feel.
You keep picking such delightful little known gems, I used to LOVE this movie. Your face at the pappy reveal was a hoot!😂
James Garner played Maverick on the t.v. show for years. He plays the old dude with the mustache.
This is my go to movie when I'm feeling down!
Thanks for reacting to this gem. Maverick was EASILY my favorite western TV show from the 60's because it was very clever. So it's fun to watch Garner in the movie!
This is one of the forgotten but probably best adaption of an old tv show to the big screen. This was based on the James Garner show Maverick. Great cast and a lot of fun. I wonder if modern audiences get the inside joke of Lethal Weapon with Danny Glover.
Yeah there were lots of cameos in this, but can we give it up for Graham Greene in the fierce Indian warrior scenes? Laughed my ass off! Love that guy.
Make no mistake, James Garner is and always will be the original Maverick, it was his baby, his creation first for the TV Show. Sure they created the character on paper, but he had to make up the character from the page to make it come to life. He was funny as hell in that show. That's why they asked him to do this movie with Mel and Jodie. The producers could have done it without him, but they kew Garner still had star power and would be a huge draw for audiences, and they were right. The movie was a big success.
Loved all the characters from old TV Westerns in this, along with some Country Music artists like, Clint Black.
THIS WAS ONE OF MY FAV TV SHOWS
There's a boatload (heh... literally) of country music stars cameoing in this on the riverboat at the end.
Vince Gill, Clint Black, Carlene Carter, Waylon Jennings, Cathy Mattea, and maybe others?
Anyone know?
“The Widow Porkchop conned me!”
the man who played the Indian Chief, Joseph, was a real Indian [indigenous person if you want]. Ironically or on purpose, there is an Angel character in this movie, but in Garner's TV series The Rockford Files in the 1970's there was the infamous "Angel" con artist recurring character played by the late Stuart Margolin, who was hilarious...
Didn't see it coming either but it made sense that Coop was Brett's father since James Garner, the actor who played Coop in this movie, was the original Maverick in the old 50s/60s TV show.
Not only that, but Garner actually played Pappy Maverick in the original series.
Back then they did a great job with the humor in this movie! I like that it is not nasty or a ton of foul language! Always look for to your reactions. Wishing you many blessings
Great pic! A very underrated and under the radar action flick from the 90s
Your laughter at the little moment at 11:31 made me TOTALLY think you got it:)
I loved this! I laughed throughout the entire movie! Great cast, great ending, fun ride!!
So glad you had fun! I was pleasantly surprised with this one.
FUN FACT:One of the ladies that was Margret Mary Was Superman 1978 Lois Lane Herself Margot Kidder! MIND BLOWN!!!
This remains a very fun movie, with a great ending. As stated, it is based on the old TV series 'Maverick', which is still fun as it re-runs in syndication. Interesting etymology - 'car' is short for 'carriage', but technically, that was a stagecoach.
I LOVE this movie!
This is one of those movies i tend to watch when i feel down. I know most people like to watch more profound movies and stories when they deon't feel allright, but to me this is one of theose movies that make me feel happy after a bad day.
The best thing about it is, the more you watch it, the better it gets!
Did you know that there was a series (in the 60s starring James Garner as Brett Maverick)?
I never saw it (It never ran in my country), but i would love to watch it someday.
If you liked this movie, i recommend watching "Support Your Local Sheriff" (1969) and "Support Your Local Gunfighter" (1971). Whereas especially the later one is very much in spirit of "Maverick", but both are tons of fun to watch tbh.
Jodie Foster is just stunning in this. She is in everything, but ... this film ...
Clint Black (country singer) had a cameo in this and did a song for it. It was the son at the start of the poker tournament and he was the first guy who gets caught cheating and thrown overboard.
I love the scene when Mel Gibson and Danny Glover recognize together is a reference to Lethal Weapon films
A highly underrated movie.
Thanks for this one 👍
I remember watching this at the drive in. Of course I watched the TV series. It's a fun movie.
A favorite of mine that I'm so thrilled reactors are finding. The cascading twists in the last 10 minutes are so much fun. Fantastic reaction as always.
I am so glad you watch this film. It's one of my favorite comedies with Mel Gibson. James Garner was the original actor to play Maverick. I've always loved James Garner he's always been a phenomenal actor. To throw one out for you to consider would be space cowboys. You'll absolutely love it.
Maverick may be Jodie Foster at peak beauty. She is adorable in every scene 😍 the queen of hearts indeed.
The movie is a remake/continuation of the 1950's-60's TV show of the same name, staring James Garner.
HAVING JAMES GARNER(THE ORIGINAL MAVERICK) BE IN THIS WAS PERFECT.
All the poker players were in westerns TV and movies of the past. This was many's last appearance.
I just love this movie. It's so fun and entertaining.
"Was that fast? I thought that was fast."
Maybe I should have spelled that "fayust."
Ty for this.. very awesome movie, very awesome reaction
Great underrated watch
Love this movie so much
Another Richard Donner film is Ladyhawke, and I think you would absolutely love it. Nice reaction here, though - thanks for what you do.
Thanks! I actually have a reaction to Ladyhawke on Patreon, it will eventually be edited for RUclips. (It's currently on my calendar for July, but the dates of my back catalog edits are always changing)
@@CasualNerdReactionsThat is fantastic news. Can't wait 'til it hits RUclips. The film is ridiculously lacking in reactions.
love your reaction
OMG One of My Favorites ❤❤❤ Mel Gibson was Fabulous and RIP the Great James Garner and James Coburn😢 Also I Adore Alfred Molina❤
Alfred doesn't get enough love for this movie
RIP RICHARD DONNER
This movie is just plain fun.👍
Great 90s movie! One of top 3 Mel Gibson movies.
Consider reacting to "Far and Away" it's young Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in a period adventure romance. Funny and cute!
Love this movie!
James Garner. I'm too old to live, Jimmy Garner. Jim Garner. James Rockford Files. Maverick. The Great Escape...
The one and only Maverick?! 😂 I guess you didn't know this was a remake (of a TV show). 😅
I can confirm! Had no idea until after I watched the movie 🤣
7:55 It looked easy when John Wayne did it. 😂
This was one of my favorite movies back in the 90’s, before Mel Gibson made such an ass of himself it made all his older films unwatchable for me. 😞
Check out the film Blood Father featuring an older (2016) Mel Gibson. It bombed in the box office, probably because his name is still tainted, but I kind of loved it and it has nearly a 90% tomatometer score.
May I recommend a couple of James Garner westerns? "Support Your Local Sheriff" and "Support Your Local Gunfighter."
