I remember watching this with my dad. He loved the original show with James Garner and called the twist that he'd be Maverick's father in this.
I was going to write the _exact_ same comment.
Gods, I wish I could remember when I first saw this with my dad. I remember watching it with him, but I don't remember particulars. I know he was a big James Garner fan, as The Rockford Files was his favorite show. I do remember being shocked seeing Graham Greene speaking English, as at the time I only knew him as Kicking Bird from Dances With Wolves lol
The movie was based on an old TV show that ran from 1957-1962, and James Garner (Coop) played the original Bret Maverick, so it was great homage to see him brought back for the movie as the father to Mel Gibson's Bret.
I'm sounding like a broken record here but I don't care... I am absolutely loving your selections, the good stuff... that others can't be bothered with. It is so refreshing. Please keep em coming!
Patreon picked most of these, I must confess… but thanks.
@@JimmyMacram Well it IS still you... YOU have some really good patreon members... and I love their selections. Alas my poor funding status doesn't allow me to be a member (yet) so i can't 'force' you lol to do the flicks I'd like to see covered, but yeah, they do pick some really good stuff. There are A LOT of 'you don't have to rush out and see it/must see' stuff, but they are good nonetheless. I hope someone suggests stuff like Kingdom of Heaven, Remains of the Day, The Commitments, Fabulous Baker Brothers, Copland, The Way (2010), Wag the Dog, Bull Durham or Grosse Pointe Blank one day...
The guy talking in the beginning is none other than Alfred Molina. A.K.A. Doc OC from Spider-Man
This movie still one of my favorite comedy of all time. Jodie and Mel are amazing together despite what people think about him now. He’s a great actor whatever the theme of his movies.
Classic! Let’s go. Yep James garner the older one in this was maverick in the old show. My parents still watch it. The bad guy is doc ock from Spider-Man. Alfred Molina.
It was their fault for being on our land before we got here 🤣
Great chemistry between the main characters, great sunday afternoon watch.
This is one of my favorite movies it has mad replay value
I know the person is a bit iffy, but I love Mel's acting.
@6:30 James Garner RIP (Maverick's dad) was the actor who played Maverick in the original 1970s TV series. Nice easter egg recasting him in the movie. If you never saw Garner in the old 70's series "The Rockford Files" where he played a private investigator, it's entertaining 70's television.
He was amazing in The Great Escape, one of my favorite movies.
3 movies for the 3 lead...
Mel Gibson - Ransom
James Gardner - Space Cowboys
Jodi Foster - Contact
I use to watch this movie all the time as a kid
I wish more people knew this movie
My favorite poker movie of all time and one of my favorites period
Don’t forget Uncle Jesse from the original Dukes of Hazzard.
Jodi soooo adorable in this movie.
This is a fantastic movie
Wouldn't have imagined u reacting to this one.
Man, almost forgot about this movie! Love that you did it.
Totally thought this was Top Gun Maverick at first.
Great watching you watch this! Just saw it again for the first time since I was a kid and it is just a damned enjoyable movie. Mel Gibson may be crazy, but he can act and be charming with good comedic timing when he wants to. Music is basically classic western in my mind, and the characters are actually pretty great. I love how they treat the native americans, just as people dealing with their situation but not dumb or savage or anything like that.
Knowing the twist on a second viewing is interesting, there are a lot of tells between Father and Son and looks you wouldn't catch the first time. I'll have to rematch this again in a few years, or when I just need a nice well made movie I can enjoy for two hours.
My one of the best fav movies in '90, glad you enjoyed because this movie deserve more attention! XD
Also i was surprised to discover that this movie its based from a old tv series (if i saw correctly) and yes this movie must to be watched after someone saw Lethal Weapon w
I was hoping you would get that Lethal Weapon moment at 5:45.
FINALLY! Another RUclipsr checking out this western comedy.
Damn near everything about this film is just wonderful, but God damn the script is PERFECT.
As already pointed out, the twist is that James Garner was the original Maverick from the TV series so it makes perfect sense for him to be Mavericks father in this .
Ok so he is Mavericks father then? I first saw this when I was only 9 in 1995 and from the first time I saw it the thing that confused me the most was Is He Mavericks Dad? Back then I didn't know the movie was based on a show and that James Garner was in the show but even when I found that out I still kinda wondered*is he Mavericks dad?
I was so excited to see your latest film selection. You're right. It is a fun movie. One of my favorites starring Mel Gibson.
17:37-17:45 LOL.
miscast? Dude James Garner himself loved his work in it and Garner is the original Maverick from TV show
Quality Reaction👍thanks for sharing🤗✨
My ultimate guilty pleasure film that I can watch anytime, anywhere no matter my mood. Pure escapism fun. Love this film… Hollywood doesn’t seem to make these any more…
Probably my 2nd favorite movie with card playing. Rounders is EASILY the 1st. If you haven't seen it you MUST add to your list. Matt Damon, Edward Norton, John Malkovich, Famke Jannsen, John Turturo. It's a must see!!!
The not looking at the card I do that all the time and most time it works
I always really liked this one, very fun time. Does it count as a western?
Graham Greene makes this for me
Coop was the original maverick..
Class film
Another 1 of my favorites. 👍
I've seen this classic over 100 times over the last 28 years and still love it more an more but I'm still kinda confused about one thing...James Garner is Mavericks dad right?..like biological dad? Maverick says "my pappy" with him around has had me wondering from the beginning "is he his dad or not?"
🤙
this is in 1875..
Alfred Molina was the actor u didn't know the name of.
I used to watch Maverick as a child. what has been pointed out is that James Garner played Brett Maverick, in the original series. what hasn't been pointed out is that He also Played Beauregard Maverick, you guessed it AKA ( Pappy ). In one episode Brett & Bart ( Jack Kelly) Come to town for Pappy's wedding. I don't remember the details but the three had to make a hasty exit out of town . A posse ensued and was scarred off by an unknown shooter, which turned out to be Uncle Bentley Maverick, played by you guessed it Jack Kelly. So in conclusion at least one maybe two of the actual character 's played by the actual Actors where in the Movie, Beauregard and Bentley. (I thought I saw Jack Kelly in the background as one of the gambler s )
I forgot James Coburn was also in this. They bringing out all the old cowboys!
If u liked him in this u need to watch Boogie Nights
I used to love the James Garner Maverick from way back before the Rockford files!
