Comparisons were really interesting. Everything sounded especially harsh against the Q9U except for the Shure MV7/SM7b and (of course) the Neumann. I couldn't believe how similar the sound profiles were between the Q9U and the SM7b. But my biggest takeaway? The MV7 was a touch brighter, has the USB/XLR combo plus a mix control between computer and zero-latency monitoring for an extra $50. I've already ordered the Q9U, but will keep the MV7 in the back of mind while testing for a few weeks.
Great review, as always. The comparisons are very helpful and set you apart from other channels for sure. The cry for help in your song obviously tells us you hate it so much. :D

I've had the Q2U for a few years now and it's great on W10 through USB. There was an issue before the firmware update that became available (in 2019 or 2020 I think) but with the firmware update it's working flawlessly. For a cheap-ish dynamic USB mic for just about any simple voice usage + the ability to move up to a USB interface with XLR support, it's a great buy. Here's a thought - with each mic you review, do the whole "this is the so-and-so and its settings are such-and-such" then export that clip by itself, drop all these clips in a folder or maybe even categorize them and bam, you now have a clip for every mic you have and never have to go through all the trouble of hooking them all up again for these comparisons.
This is a good idea in theory but unfortunately not in practice as there are too many variables that change over time, bandrews intonation and tone would change and develop, the acoustics of the room would change as he gets more or less gear, and a bunch of other things might change like of an interface breaks and he has to start using a different one. Redoing mic tests for each video is definitely the better way of doing it in terms of quality and obvs bandrew thinks that he has enough time to be able to do that

It really shouldn't surprise me anymore but unfortunately, here in late Q1, 2021, I'm still pleasantly surprised when a USB device is built with a USB-C socket, versus micro, mini, or seriously...full size USB-A ports? Being able to use the current "commodity USB cable", versus needing to dig through my cable stash for a compatible cable, when I've lost, ruined, or otherwise can't use the provided cable, is such a relief. Using a USB-C port doesn't require implementing USB3 bandwidth, Thunderbolt capability, USB-PD power (but when relevant, that IS nice), or the other things USB-C provides, but the robustness, lack of "right-side up", and Current Year commonality with other devices sure is appreciated. Even if existing products could be revised to simply replace the port, most folks surely wouldn't mind.
I mean, all devices come with the relevant cables, and a simple and cheap adapter will fix any USB compatibility issue. It's because it's not a big deal for most people that companies are slow to switch.
Awesome review, really helped me make my decision. Since I'm staying USB for awhile before I switch to XLR, and because I'm strictly using it for voice, I loved the sound in all the comparisons and am excited to try it out. Thanks :)

The mute button is surprisingly not bad when it comes to handling noise! It's there (and you shouldn't expect it to not be), but it's pretty quiet for a physical switch!
I got my SM58 right at the start and I don't think I have to look for anything else, but your movies are interesting to watch. Thank you for another interesting review.
It really does sound like they were going for an SM7B-like frequency response, at least when the mid boost is engaged. Seems like a pretty good deal to my ears for that price.
To your request in the video, I do like my Samson Q2U and it's meeting my needs at this time. If I were tp upgrade anything I would want to add in a USB interface, and I like the control with the Shure MV7 you mentioned.
Personally I like the form factor and sound of the Q2U, considering it has 0 switches makes it easier to EQ IMHO. I would love to see a version of Q2U from Shure using the 58/Beta 58A body. As for the form factor I dislike any mic that has a mount attached to the body, it picks up too much noise and you cannot, easily, put it on a shock mount. Personally I like streamline mic sizes over the broadcast-esk mics, on video big mics seem more like 'Hey look at me' kind of thing.
Sigh. Just as I thought I finally found the USB mic I have been looking for. The shocking performance of the internal shock mount and its inability to mix monitoring and playback seem so simple and yet..... Thank you for this review.
Great comparisons many guys eq the mics to hear his voice better but here we hear the mic exactly as it is no eq so we can really compare and the palate cleanser is so necessary great reviews !! straight to the point and funny.
There were two recently released microphones i was immensely excited about for the last year: the Aston Element and the Q9U. Let's just say i won't be selling off my NT1 to get either of these after watching your thorough reviews :/ Regardless, Bandrew, well done as usual and thank you.
I was excited about this one, but think I'll stick with the Mackie EM USB you recommended for spoken word. Absolutely correct about that one. Works great for remote radio.voicetracking. Keep these reviews coming. Best in your class.
That throw was great! Anyway, this is the best Samson Q9U review video I watched here on RUclips. What I got from is recommendation for podcasting/voice over, but not so much on music. I'd like to see the light towards mute indicator. I'm still struggling on which final microphone I should get in the future: Samson Q9U or Maono PD400X.
I was just listening but looking at my other monitor when you switched in the U67 and perked up like oh this sounds good I wonder what mic that is......then you say $7,000 and I had my hopes dashed lol. I know I years late to the party but thank you for doing these comparisons you helped me find the Ethos mic for my home setup this week (years after you recorded these videos) and now I am looking for a mic to use at work. I know that it is frowned upon but I really like a warm colored mic for vocals. When you are on meetings all day with no post production to dial in the sound I have to find a mic that produces the sound I am looking for out of the box.
I liked the Q9U, did feel some mud on it tbh, i am not a fan of engaging any filters whatsoever on the mic, so flat mode for me always! Also in comparisons, i think in the same price bracket, the procaster is the absolute star! Loved the SM7B as well, bcz well....i love that mic! I would have love to watch it being compared it to the RE20, which is another broadcast legend and why not! Bumps are ridiculous on this thing tbh, and yes the XLR output did have some harshness to it, but not as much as the MV7, u mentioned in the guitar section that it was ‘shouty’ in the mids, prob that was the mid boost doing it, but yeah it was there! Again a super amazing video, lots of waiting for this one, but i think it was worth the wait, i hope u r taking good care of yourself and are keeping healthy! Thankyou for doing this dear brother!
I just picked it up from BestBuy with a B&H Photo pricematch at $119. Will be using it only for voice streaming/podcasting. At that pricepoint I dont think It was a bad pickup.
This mic is now listed at $100 in a few places. I assume that makes it much more compelling. I have an SM7B, with cloudlifter. It's great, obviously, but I don't use it much because I don't like having this stuff out all the time. Just ordered the Q9U after watching this video, and seeing the $100 price. That'll also mean a pair of good mics in case I'm doing kind of an interview podcast. I'm mostly doing tech videos, though, so solo.
@@tango_gru I haven't done side by side with the SM7B, but for my normal use, this thing is great. The SM7B is great, but I had an XLR to USB audio device, a cloud lifter, 2 XLR cables, and the mic itself. As that tended to be frustrating, and the mic would get bumped often in my studio (AKA the bedroom, because I work from home), I'd generally not leave it out for long. Now I just have USBC directly into the laptop. I use it for all of my zoom calls, and because it's dynamic, it does well with getting voice and not too much background. I've done one live podcast with it, but will probably do more soon. If I'm doing a serious recording I'll probably drag the SM7B, but we'll see. I'm not sure I'd really be able to tell the difference blind.
@@KevinGalligan I get your point , sometimes less is more . I am currently using Elgato Wave 3 and it gives me decent results for my work (Some guided video tutorials ) I do think that Podcastage is not fair to the Samson Q9U towards the end of video as it does a fairly good job for Podcasts. The only people who wouldnt like this are who fidget a lot and keep bumping into the Microphone or keep adjusting it or else if they are using XLR and USB at the same time. I dont think Samson people designed both interfaces to be used at the same time (that actually sounds silly to me). The entire Setup for SM7B is a pain to deal with (Cost and space). I am Shure that there is better technology that doesnt need a Cloudlifter in the middle. Plus the Noise reduction filter on Camtasia work pretty well for post processing ;) I am not buying a Shure SM7B unless it costs $200 and the Cloud lifter costs $100. Might buy an old one... but such old Technology doesnt deserve this much of money. A bit of a Rant but I had to say it.
Sad face. 😢 The q9u seems to holding full price plus in the UK. £200-230. Every time I watch one of these videos and think "that might suit me" the UK availability or price ruins it.
Sure, that U67 is buttery smooth, but when you throw it on with all those inexpensive dynamics, your doing a great job proving the law of diminishing returns! Q9U sounds pretty good to me, pretty ugly though, looks too much like that god-awful MXL 'broadcast' mic. Btw, love the vid, as always!
@@TurntoGod7 Eye of the beholder, right? If by pod style, you mean like a podmic, now that is a sharp looking little mic. Procaster looks sleek to me as well.
Yeah, at $200, my recommendation will have to be a Rode Podmic and a dedicated XLR interface. I believe the end result not only sounds better, but offers more to the consumer, and gives an easier path to upgrade. No Q9U recommendations from me. And TBH, the housing looks cheap.
I disagree about the housing but otherwise, yeah, it doesn't seem like a great mic for the money. It's a more robust and feature-rich Q2U for twice the price.
Just to be clear, ~$90 was the street price for the Q2U during the pandemic last time I saw. It's come down a bit from that peak (more like $80) but it's still nowhere near that $50-$60 I got it for (which is the price Bandrew mentions).
@@gyozakeynsianism If they had just put the Q2U capsule into a studio dynamic type of housing and solid it for $150 It'd have been solid. But they changed the sound, tried to make it into an SM7B and just made it muddy AF.
I don't like that the sides of the mute button are the same color as the microphone. They should've colored it red or something to make it more visually obvious that it's hot. At least it's a latching button, but it'll still blend right in.
Maybe it's just me, but I definitely think the Neumann is the winner. Sidenote: thank you for all these videos, I've watched a ton of them looking for a USB mic and it's very helpful when you are trying to decide.
Thanks for your honest review. I want a plug and play USB mic for RUclips videos. Do you recommend me to buy Q2U? Does it work fine in Windows 10 via USB? Does it have any driver or other issue?
What an excellent throw from Bandrew this time. Usually i have some snide comment to make about the mediocrity of the effort he puts into them, but one can clearly see he expelled it so fervently that the camera shook. Bravo, my good sir.
I experienced a very big issue ( at least for me 🤣) with this mic. You can 👂 hear it clearly when you test the mute button at 06:12 , and slightly when bumping test rejection. This mic make a kind of bell 🔔 sound, or like an internal piece juggling inside. If you don’t touch the mic no problem. But as soon as I have a little move, here come the bell 😱. For ultimate test, just shake gently the mic with your hand and you’ll hear it clearly. I know we are not suppose to shake a mic during recording but I assume that a mic is not supposed to make that kind of noise.
One of my biggest questions was if this could power HD6XXs, and you just casually drop that it can power the equivalent 650s. I figured nobody would post such information, like this review was made specifically for me. Thank you!

Sigh. Just as I thought I finally found the USB mic I have been looking for. The shocking performance of the internal shock mount and its inability to mix monitoring and playback seem so simple and yet..... Thank you for this review.
it actually sounds amazing, I am shocked
I found this video fun, interesting AND helpful. Thanks Bandrew.
Great comparisons many guys eq the mics to hear his voice better but here we hear the mic exactly as it is no eq so we can really compare and the palate cleanser is so necessary great reviews !! straight to the point and funny.
Much appreciate yr effort in comparison section, really helpful.
i fkng love this guy. so glad I found him earlier today. subscribed!
awesome review. incredibly helpful. thank you for taking the time.
There were two recently released microphones i was immensely excited about for the last year: the Aston Element and the Q9U. Let's just say i won't be selling off my NT1 to get either of these after watching your thorough reviews :/ Regardless, Bandrew, well done as usual and thank you.
NT1 is evergreen cm. Never sell it. Even NT1 gen 5 can't compete NT1 gen 4.
Love your videos man! I always find what I'm looking for!
It will be cool listen to the RE-20! Besides that, you always nail the reviews!!!
I love you bandrew and hope you’re having a rad day!
I was excited about this one, but think I'll stick with the Mackie EM USB you recommended for spoken word. Absolutely correct about that one. Works great for remote radio.voicetracking.
Keep these reviews coming. Best in your class.
I bought one today! So far I like it a lot.
Thanks for the review ! And still between this mic and the rode podmic
VERY ENTERTAINING CONTENT! HAHA Keep it up sir! Watching this in 2023 from the Philippines. Thank you for this!
Thank you so much for the kind words and the support. I really appreciate it.
This is the best mic review online!
SM7B killer. Not that it does everything better, but it does it just as good for half the price.
The throw was AWESOME! But I like the sound of this mic!
Hi Kevin..... hows your experience pitching it against SM7B ???
The sE Electronics v7 is so smooth! The sE and the Rode Procaster are my favorites.
Neither of those are smooth,, they are bright and a tad harsh
If you wanna hear smooth check out Royer ribbon microphones
The Q9U sounds great with the mid boost. Very similar to the sm7.
i don't know why I keep watching your videos, I don't even own any of these microphones. I'm just using my headset mic LOL
Love hearing the U67 in all these comparisons. Gotta make that beast earn its keep. 😆
Worth more than the rest combined lol
Thank you. Very helpful review!
I've been waiting for this
Sure, that U67 is buttery smooth, but when you throw it on with all those inexpensive dynamics, your doing a great job proving the law of diminishing returns! Q9U sounds pretty good to me, pretty ugly though, looks too much like that god-awful MXL 'broadcast' mic. Btw, love the vid, as always!
Ugly?? Which one looks good to you? I thinks it’s a sharp looking mic, but I’m a fan of the pod style.
@@TurntoGod7 Eye of the beholder, right? If by pod style, you mean like a podmic, now that is a sharp looking little mic. Procaster looks sleek to me as well.
I love how he tried to say the U67 price with a straight face at first lol
This is a great video! In so many ways i love it !
Been waiting for this
Great humor and great review very thorough helped with my decision making thanks
Thank you very much for the kind words. I'm thrilled it helped you make a more informed decision. I hope you have a great day.
But they changed the sound, tried to make it into an SM7B and just made it muddy AF.
hell yeah samson! Q9U!
The Q9u is currently on sale at Best Buy $30 off.
Q2U is probably the best deal. It sounded great for the price.
Love your vids Bandrew!
Nothing to do better with my life than plugging and unplugging mic.....I love that!
One of my biggest questions was if this could power HD6XXs, and you just casually drop that it can power the equivalent 650s. I figured nobody would post such information, like this review was made specifically for me.
Thank you!
that sm7b does sound better but not twice better lol
i wont lie.. i come for the reviews, but stay for the asmr
0:45 when someone walks in on you while you're live streaming.
Thanks for this comparison and overview of this Mic... I'm looking into a dynamic mic right now to connect to a xlr deck (goXLR mini is my choice so far)
This was useful and interesting...
I am honestly not a single step closer to picking anything xD xD xD to my untrained ear it's all the same xD
I swear your throws are getting better and better each video. How big is your right arm compared to your left?
