Fantastic review, and you are hilarious! I am in the $100 range, buying my first microphone ever for amatuer videos recroded from my computer and podcast interviews recorded via Skype or Zoom. I watched this to compare the RODE NT-Mini to the Blue Yeti. Thanks for doing the back and forth comparisons - hugely helpful. Now I just need to see if you have done a review of the Blue Yeti to compare it's standalone features placed on the desk and turned around. Thank you!
Great review, thank you very much for comparing to so many other models. The NTG sounded really weird I think - and very different from the review you did a few months back?! I think it is an excellent on-camera shotgun mic, but here it really sounded horrible?
If I’m not mistaken, during the review of the NTG I was much farther off the mic for the majority of it. This was 3 inches away which is a lot closer than the full review.
Very interesting video, very informative but also fun! I like the NT1 most with the yeti coming second and the nt-usb third. Personally I found it to sound muffled when recording the electric guitar, for the acoustic it was ok and it performs the best on the human voice range I think. Cheers and may you always be successful 🙂
hey @Podcastage thank you for your reviews, they are really really great! Great job! I actually found out about that mic from your Twitter account. You even compared it with AT2020! (unfortunately not the USB version, but apparently they're close enough) Thanks to you I might consider buying this mic
Now THIS is what I call a review! I've been recommending NT-USB Mini to people as one of the great starter mics for live streaming and now I have a video to link with my recommendation. Still trying to find a dynamic, perhaps super cardioid, USB mic to recommend for those who have acoustically untreated rooms or Cherry MX Blues.. :)

This was far more interesting than I expected, primarily because of the desktop-mounted testing. For a brief second there, I thought "oh it's got a little magnetic stand, cool." But I hadn't even thought of how useless that is until you demonstrated it. Not only is the sound rather bad, the desk noise comes through loud and clear as does the keyboard. I'm actually sitting here wondering what they even thought the point of that stand is, considering it's nowhere near tall enough to be at all useful.
OMG this is the most practical test/review of almost all the RUclips that I have seen!! (I certainly spent way too much on RUclips reviews lol) Love all the practical test, knock the arm, blue switch, etc.. and all the comparisons with different mic. awesome job. subscribed instantly:)
The COMPARISON section is FANTASTIC. The VideoMic NTG and G Track Pro were my favourite. Thank you Bandrew for being so awesome, your videos have helped me a lot over the years and I'm glad you finally blew up LOL.
Massive kudos for such a thorough comparison. So it sounds pretty damn good, slightly dissapointed, though not very surprised that the audio isn't quite as good as the RODE NT USB. But it's good for the price (so long as you put it on a mic arm)
My pleasure Beanie. Thanks for checking it out. I do think above the $100 price point there are some nicer sounding options, and then when you look at XLR, there are a lot more options that I think would be a better option.
Thanks for your great review! I just got the Rode NT-USB Mini and using it with a Windows system. Unfortunatelly I have to set the gain level at 100% to record audio you are able to hear. (And just to add that: I'm really close to the Rode, about 3 Inches.) Does anyone know how to increase the volume of the recording without having to so post processing?
T-T I didn't see your comment before I bought Mine also extremely soft and at gain level high it is very noisy There is so much white noise that it sounds worse than my phone recording.
I am looking for a small and light microphone. I travel a lot and I need to record voice over in different places. DJI wireless mic is not great for that, so I am looking for a replacement. Would you recommend this mic for travel voice over? :) Thanks for the test!
Idea for video. There is only one review on Sennheiser E614 on youtube, and it sounds exactly as NT1, while boomed above head. This blowed my mind.and.I ordered one. Hope will see such a comparison on this channel. Pencil mics seems great for untreated room, better than gun mics with their interferance tube.
excellent and helpful thank you , Im looking for a better sounding USB mic, i have the Blue Yeti and dont like the sound, im still learning and will never stop, really wanted your opinion, im looking to buy a more warmer sound , I hope I said that right....thank you
Good review. I would add my 2 cents, as I got the Rode mini and the AT2100x for comparison. I think the super highs are rolled off on purpose. By comparison, the AT2100x (same as the samson q2 with update electronics) is a lot more sensitive and it picks up a lot of ambient noise. Why do I have ambient noise? because I use it in my home office for video conferencing and I have a small fridge that kicks in, there is some hiss from my speakers and my macbook fans kick in every now and then. These will get picked up by a microphone such the AT2100x and the like, but the Rode filters them very effectively. It also has much more powerful internal amp than the AT2100x, and I keep it at less than 20% in the sound controls. It has its own house sound, somewhat similar to the podmic. It is also less sensitive for positioning/distance. After 12 inches, the AT2100x sounds remote but the Rode somehow holds quite nicely. I have it on a mic arm, just so I can get it close to my mouth and keep my desk work area clear. The nice ting with zoom is that if I have a virtual background, the mic is actually cloaked.... The AT2100x is returning to amazon - too much noise and I also suspect my unit is defective with occasional noises that are besides the ambient noise at lower gain.
Dude this is the best review I’ve watched on this mic. You’ve really covered everything I want and need to know. I’m sold on this mic. Thank you for your well thought out video.

Thank you :) (and sorry for my bad english).
Hi, this was one of the best reviews I ever seen. Question: what do you recommend if I need a microphone for dubbing? My room is not so soundproofed unfortunately. Thanks in advance
Start with acoustic treatment. You don't need hundreds of dollars for acoustic foam panels. Go to a hardware store. Buy a few meters of PVC pipe and some 90 degree joiners (4 for each panel you intend to make.) Go to a dollar store and buy a couple of six packs of scissor clamps. (8 for each panel) Cut the PVC pipe into roughly 1.8m to 2m lengths. Use the 90 degree joins to make squares. Use the clips to attack blankets to the PVC frames, and stand these panels up against your walls. This will massively reduce reflection and give you much flatter recording environment. I wish more content creators would use this simple design and sort out that ugly room noise that makes them sound so unprofessional. A good mic in a bad room still sounds bad.

it will be great to connect it to the RODECASTERPRO I actually raised this point to ryan (rode) and suggested that it will be great to have few built-in usb input on the next future generation of the Rodecasterpro to actually plug beside XLR, a NT-usb and NT-USB mini as well external tablet/phone on the top of the TRRS to the back of the rodecasterpro and be able to do skype and streaming.. bleutooth sound on the rodecasterpro for phone call hmmm.........
Someone needs to put together a compilation of all your guitar/vocals test sections! Always my favourite part of your videos!! Great vid as always my friend! 👍😁
Awesome review. Loved the extended test of different mics. The XLR sounded best - not a surprise. But I'm looking for a Live Webinar USB Mic and I think it would be a good choice. The sound of the Blue Yeti is maybe a little better to me. And I was surprised about the good sound of the Rode Videomic. Don't know if that would be a good choice for Live Webinars. The second function I'd love if it's easy to use with an iPad Pro. My future USB Mic should be good for those two purposes
I just love when you throw the boxes on every microphone review, but this box throw was the best in my opinion, so aggressive and hilarious, *those damn boxes*
I watched this video maybe more than 20 times. And went to some other guys reviewing the same product and went back here. I bought ATR 2100x from your review and now still considering buying this Rode or maybe its mother the bigger one. Greetings from Indonesia. Your performance is awesome.
What's up, one question.....I want to buy a gaming microphone, I'm between the fox and the Rode NT-USB Mini, which one do you recommend because it would only be for gaming and if the distance between the microphone and me would affect these two microphones when communicating with my playmates? MANY THANKS
Assuming you're connecting to a computer, I would probably go for the NT-USB mini just because it has some DSP processing. It's doesn't let you fine tune it, but it's functional and can improve your sound. So based on that alone, I think that would be the right choice for you if you're going to be click clacking on your keyboard in a voice chat.
I watched the whole video just so that the channel can get full watch time otherwise 3 minutes within the review I was already sold. Already ordered mine for my first podcast.👍🏽👍🏽
If only more reviews of all tech products were this thorough with heir approach for designing review content for us viewers. He even told us about the gain button which acts as a button as well. no other reviewer covered. just saying he is awesome :)
This should be the standard on how microphone reviews should work! With that said, Im so happy I got the Rode NT-USB when it came out. The price and quality still holds up! =)
The Samson G-Track pro was a different sound , it caught my attention. The Audio Technica At2020 is real nice. i been useing for 5 years now and still making the extra cash with it. Great vlog.
Ahh now the dilemma is... Is this mic worth the extra $25 over the Samson C01U, which is the mic you recommend on your website as the best "under $100 cardiod condenser"?
AT2020 USB+ is really further ahead of this mic for the about same price (look for sales). It's cool looking though-- it reminds me of the Blue Raspberry in picking up any bump near the body. Too crunchy and not extended in frequency response-- I do not like this mic. At all. It's a $40 dollar mic in a nice housing. It needs a 3 inch or closer proximity. The Pod Mic sounds better- this mic sounds nearly identical to the Blue Yeti Mini.
Good video I'm just starting to live stream, I have a few XLR mics I use through my Focusrite Pro 40 interface. But I cant seem to get them to work on my live stream only through OSB. StreamYard won't recognize the XLR mic? Any advice?
🙏 I know they are different but, if you had to buy only ONE mic between the 1. Rode NT-USB Mini vs 2. Rode Video Mic NTG, which one would it be ? For podcasting and streaming without the mic in the frame it seems that the USB Mini can handle it. Thanks! 🤗
An added bonus to this and a few other Rode USB mics is a pretty good audio software that comes with it. Really simplifies a lot of podcasting kind of stuff.
hi, have you got issues with distorted audio when Noise Gate is selected on the Rode Connect software? Everything else is very good with this mic. I use it when I can't be bothered with my Rodecaster. But that noise gate makes my audio choppy for some reason. Already tested 2 Mac computers and still the same result. I only added the Noise Gate in Garageband.

it will be great to connect it to the RODECASTERPRO I actually raised this point to ryan (rode) and suggested that it will be great to have few built-in usb input on the next future generation of the Rodecasterpro to actually plug beside XLR, a NT-usb and NT-USB mini as well external tablet/phone on the top of the TRRS to the back of the rodecasterpro and be able to do skype and streaming.. bleutooth sound on the rodecasterpro for phone call hmmm.........
not getting the microphone, but i really enjoyed your review thank you so much.
This man KNOWS how to make a good quality video. Thanks dude, so helpful!
Do a review onAudio-Technica ATR2500x-USB Cardioid Condenser Microphone
What's up, one question.....I want to buy a gaming microphone, I'm between the fox and the Rode NT-USB Mini,
which one do you recommend because it would only be for gaming and if the distance between the microphone and me would affect these two microphones when communicating with my playmates?
@@Podcastage Excellent, thank you very much for your prompt response, very kind!
I watched the whole video just so that the channel can get full watch time otherwise 3 minutes within the review I was already sold. Already ordered mine for my first podcast.👍🏽👍🏽
Omg. You are my new favorite reviewer on youtube.
Throwing the box like that literally made me laugh out loud 😂
Thank you for the official terms, i have an untreated room, whats the best mike possible please .. Thank you again
Mike Tyson - he's good in every room...
Finally, a review that gets to the points and covers all bases. All questions answered.
Could you suggest a microphone for nasally voices at around $100. Cheers Matt
I've bought my forever mic and still find myself coming back to watch your videos on the offchance you convince me to buy another.
What’s your forever mic?
@@Podcastage A CAD e100s. It fits my voice really well, and I bought a nice pop filter to deal with the plosives issue you included in your review.
Great vlog.
This is a really good review, I wish most were like this. Thanks for the extensive comparison, and holy shit the Nano sounds terrible.
Any advice?
As of 2020-08-17 this is the best review / comparison video I've ever seen in my life.
So true!
🙏 I know they are different but, if you had to buy only ONE mic between the 1. Rode NT-USB Mini vs 2. Rode Video Mic NTG, which one would it be ? For podcasting and streaming without the mic in the frame it seems that the USB Mini can handle it. Thanks! 🤗
This is how to compare stuff :) Good review!
Great Video Sir ...and u said its not for nosely voice like my is a little bit.
So which one u would prefer for nosely voices?
U ll start laughing, but i need it only for online dart where i speak my scores of about 1 meter distance.
So which thing u could recommend for my case? Nosely and 1 meter distance.
Greets from Austria & sry for my bad english
I think this video should be longer. We need a cinematic variant! RODE NT-USB MIC REVIEW -- END GAME!! GREAT WORK, super comprehensive and all the little segments are so cool! KILLER JOB!
