- In today’s episode we have a closer look at the RODE NT-USB Mini microphone. This affordable USB microphone records high quality sound for podcasts, livestreams, voice over, and even for vocals for music. The microphone is simple to use, works with Mac, PC, and tablets, and is probably my favorite USB microphone in the $100 price range.

Excuse my voice - still getting over a bit of a sinus situation.
You sounded public radio smooth on that mic.
@@nathanksimpson Thanks Nathan.
Welcome to the club ! It used to be one every other month, for (too) many years.
But, as a voice actor, I can tell you're doing better than most even with a few vents not "operating" right.
Not knowing how you deal with it, I just can advise sinus cleaning with thermal water (+ added mineral salts if needed, but not always). It's like a genuine thermal spa treatment at home, and worked wonders for me : I'm currently down to 1 or 2 per year, a relief.
@@gillesmatheronpro Thanks Gilles - appreciate the advice!
@@curtisjudd I kept it short, but if you need in-depth details fell free to ask. Been doing it for dozens (myself included), with constant positive results, even my Doc gave me thumbs up for my advice.
Really appreciate the additional testing you've added in this video with different voices and different environment. Great job Curtis.
Seconded, and thank your family for being good sports and assisting with the evaluation of all the microphones.
Thanks Bandrew! Always a pleasure to have you drop by!
Hahahaha! 😂
Thanks Jim! 👍
Hi I have tried to use this on video calls using Slack and Zoom. But i get this annoying auto gain control. Using windows 10. Have disabled the option to let external app’s control this device. It’s not helping, anyone here have any suggestions?
Thanks so much for the love Curtis - glad you like the NT-USB Mini! We of course recommend using a DS1 desk stand or PSA1 studio arm with the NT-USB Mini if you want to take advantage of the mic’s proximity effect to get that rich sound. We do find that when on its desk stand and roughly 20cm from the source sound, the mic performs very well (the combination of rubber grommet on the swing mount and internal capsule shockmounting helps to mitigate knocks and bumps compared to many comparable products). It’s also a cool way to store the mic - or even to use it stuck to an upright metal object like a metal cabinet (try it!). The PSA1 is definitely best for live streamers or gamers as it will keep the mic clear of any vibrations from heavy typing on a keyboard. Great review!
Thanks! And thank you for the details on the stand options!
It seems like a great mic with one drawback. There’s no shock mount solution. Are there any plans to come out with one?
Rode Microphones, Can you please refer me a tutorial on how to set this in windows, or at least give me a reference where I can find it windows 10 setting?
dows it have a mute button?
Fantastic sound quality! Looks like a perfect solution for traveling too 😏. Oh... Wait... Traveling... 🎃🥺
Hahaha! Definitely portable.
Curtis, you're the KING of all things audio !
Thanks pal!
Should i go for nt-usb mini or nt-usb!!
And i'm getting it for cheap price! But i'm thinking maybe its a copy that's why they selling for cheap
I would go for the NT USB Mini because it can work with RODE Connect: ruclips.net/video/u3JWJzdQxI0/видео.html Also, be sure to buy from an authorized RODE dealer so that you get the warranty and do NOT get a fake.
Wow - that mic sounds great! I really like how clean, natural, and vibrant the voices sound. This was a GREAT review - fantastic!
Thanks Dadvice TV! It is an impressive microphone for the price.
This seems like an awesome mic. I love the magnetic stand attachment- it’s always annoying to remove the stand from the Yeti mic. The sound quality is terrific 😎
Yes, pretty nice that they include the threads for traditional threads without having to spend more than a couple of seconds to set it up. Well considered design.
Nice. LOVE the sponsor! 👍👍👍
Thanks Kevin!
I about spit my coffee out when the grandmaster was dethroned by his daughter in naming the NT-USB. Consider the torch passed, lol!
Hahaha! Truth be told, I was trying to get the two of them talking a bit more. 😂
Kudos to the extra talent; they didi a really great job.. Loved how your wife channeled your reviewing style with the off axis test. All the best to the family.
Hahaha, thanks Kevin, I'll pass it on to them!
Very good testing Curtis thank you, I have to say I’m impressed with the sound of the original NT USB as long as size is not an issue, but to be honest the new one is not a bad sound.

Well, here I go again...
This NTusb mini doesn’t sound terribly good to me, and the original NTusb just blows it right out of the ... window.
Just my opinion, of course.
Thanks a lot for the review, and thanks especially for bringing in extra voices for the comparison. I was just thinking you really ought to switch places - and then you did!
I love this kind of reviews that really make it possible for us to make up our own minds.
(And clearly this one is not for me).

Your videos have been extremely helpful and I absolutely appreciate all the work that goes into them. I would like your recommendation for 1 challenge I am having with my own audio setup. I'm unable to sit for videos - I just have too much energy and I talk with my hands. I also have the challenge of outside noise (a barking dog, kids outside, etc.) occasionally. I've been using a lav mic which runs through a long cable to my Canon M50. I'd like to take the audio quality up - I feel the lav mic I am using doesn't pick up enough richness or low tones in my voice. Budget is always a concern - so I need to make the right choice when I invest in the equipment. What would you recommend for a rich sounding microphone that can limit ambient noises and connect into a mic-in portion a DSLR?
Hi Dadvice TV, How much do you move around? The reason I ask is that a headset mic might be a good option if you're walking around, though it won't necessarily sound "richer" than a lavalier. A boom mic like a DEITY D3 Pro or RODE VideoMic NTG within about 6 inches of your mouth will certainly produce richer sound, but you'll need to stay on top of it. If you're interested, here's my review of the RODE VideoMic NTG where I boom it about 12 inches from my mouth: ruclips.net/video/c4Pu72J5BRE/видео.html
I watch your videos for years!!!!! I love the great quality and respect for your audience. I am. working hard to be able to get good quality. I got my first Rode NTUSB after watching your reviews. Keep the hard work, God Bless you.
Thanks Martín and happy recording!
Great mic I am sure. When I saw the name quickly I thought it said Rodent, Rode NT. LoL
Hahahaha! Yes, they chose that naming scheme for their large diaphragm condenser microphone line many years ago. I wonder if they ever considered how it might look at a glance. 😀
It’s time to say that I’ve learned a lot from your channel during last year, I know you will not understand my videos “because it’s In Arabic” 😅 but I’d love to know what do you think about the sound quality.
Thanks Walid. The sound quality was very good - I listened to 2 of them just now. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate your feedback and time.
Thanks for another great review, Curtis! And I like the way your wife and daughter did different voice tests in your living room.
Thanks Roy! Hope you're doing well!
In Windows you can also use more than one at the same time if the software accept to use Asio4All drivers.
Excellent, thanks Leo!
Lovely family you have there sir, I wish all of you the best of health and happiness, and as usual amazing content !
Thanks Boneteacher! And best wishes to you and yours!

Question - if I enable some effects & settings on windows using the RØDE Connect software. Will it be carried over to other devices, like my PS5 or iPad. Bcz I cannot install any software on those devices to control this mic. Please can you answer???
I am looking forward to use this only on my PS5 for streaming, gaming recording. I saw that this has a NOISE GATE built in which is triggered by the software. And software is only on Windows & Mac. So what I'm thinking is, I'll connect this mic to my windows laptop, enable noise filter & then take this to my PS5/ipad. But i need to know if the setting done on windows software will work on ps5/ipad.
Such a cute little Mic
Hahaha. Cute, indeed. Good to hear from you DBritt!
I just have one request from u make a whole video on usb-C mics that go with iPad Pro 18/20 model

Is there a mute button on the microphone?
Hi Drew, no mute button on the microphone itself, no.
Been using this for the past 3 weeks now and it sounds really great, although i would love rode or somebody to give us a frequency response curve for this mic, but what i feel is that it is quite flat with maybe a bit of presence boost otherwise relatively flat sounding to me, but hey i m not an expert so i maybe wrong! Thanks Agam Bhasin, I think it is mostly flat with a presence boost as well.

Hello Curtis, just want to say "Thank you!" for your review which helped me to make final decision and buy this Rode mic - I want to support local shops, so bought it here in Croatia along with DS1 desk stand. I am *very* happy with the mic which will be mostly used for my live online classes (via Zoom). I was doubting whether my untreated living room will be good-enough despite being in a quiet place - country side and was therefore considering some other options like dynamic mics like Samson Q2U, some AT models etc. Moreover, Blue Jedi, Rode NT USB and few others were also considered from he condenser side. Watched *many* reviews, but your was deciding one and Rode got a new customer thanks to you! Sincerely, Saša.
Thank you Saša. Happy recording and streaming!
Loved the review! I see that it comes with a USB C to USB A cable. Do you think a USB C to USB C cable would work? Specially for newer models of MacBook pros that don’t have USB A ports, only C?
Hi Daniel, yes, confirmed it works with a USB-C to C cable into my MacBook. Thanks!
Excellent thoughtful review, really enjoyed watching it, your channel is definitely worth subscribing to, best wishes!

Audio Quality for this mic bumps up a lot if you update the firmware from old 1.1 version that mine came with to the latest 2.3 something and using Rode Connect
👍 thanks for the tip!
the three talking heads were cool. Emma's a natural. Great review overall. Some interesting tips e.g. regarding multi-mic setup. I've ordered this mic and waiting very impatiently for it to arrive now. I really like the stands you use to bring the mic closer. I think I should get one myself. It really does make a huge difference to audio quality when the mic is close to you than when farther away.
Thanks Richard - I hope it works well for you. Happy recording!
Can I use this as USB-C to USB-C cable to connect to my laptop for podcasting?
Yes.
Hey Curtis, I'm just wondering based off what you mentioned in the video. I'm also looking at another budget cardioid microphone. It's called the HyperX Solocast. The sound quality is great but it has the issue of not having the best stand as well.
You mentioned putting the NT-USB Mini on top of a foam. What kind of a foam would you recommend?
If I put my microphone on top of an XXL mouse pad, would that be enough to negate the bumps on the table and other vibrations caused by typing constantly on the keyboard?
There is also RTX Voice that I started using and I know it would be helpful, but at the same time, when there's a lot of noise, the voice does sound a but more muffled.
I use the foam for studio monitors. I believe Auralex sells some they call mopads, but less expensive options would work here as well.
@@curtisjudd Thank you so much! I suddenly realized I had some foam from furniture deliveries and I'll see how much effect they have first before jumping into another purchase! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I have been very happy with it. I bought it for doing online teaching, and the sound quality has been excellent, despite having to use it in my living room.
👍
Would you recommend the Sennheiser Profile USB microphone over the RODE NT-USB Mini if you disregard the physical controls? I like that the RODE one is smaller, but I haven't seen any comparisons online, so I don't know if it sounds better or worse.
You can hear them by opening this video in one tab, and my Sennheiser profile video in another tab: ruclips.net/video/LoUaYhbRZQ4/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Dear friend, Thanks for a useful demo on
“RODE NT USB Mini” microphone,
Request your advice on:
- is this mic compatible with Apple- iPad8-(2020).... & iPad Air4-(2020) Tablets,
- can i record VOCAL (singing) using this Mic on Apple Tablets(2020),
- is this mic compatible with Apple music apps.
Thanks
Dilip, India
Technically, I believe it is only compatible with iPad Pro but you should double check that with RODE support to be certain.
Excellent video. Based on your video, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the nt-usb. Absolutely no regret! Thank you for making this video.
Thanks, glad to hear it!
Exactly the comparison I’m looking for; thank you so much! Ps - have you ever tried using a usb-lightning adapter to connect the rode usb mini to an iOS device?
Yes, aside from an iPad Pro, the phones have a hard time powering this. My wife uses it with her iPad Air with mixed results - seems to disconnect a lot. I think it isn’t really a great fit for that use case.
Great review, Curtis! Thank you for making such a great quality video!
I just purchased this mic for my wife’s singing podcasting and my daughter’s music instrumental lessons and videos. Your wife mentioned that she had used it for her violin lesson too. Are you able to share some of her experiences using this mic during her lesson? How close the mic has to be to her violin? Thank you!
Hi Ben, she usually has the mic positioned 3 or 4 feet from her instrument. She positions it so that it will pick up her instrument and her voice equally well.
Thanks, Curtis!
Upvote for advocating social distancing! Thanks for your review :)
Thanks Bradley! Evidently a couple of other people thought we were being too preachy. I guess that's tough for them! 😀
Hi Curtis, I have just purchased this Microphone and I am a Classical Singer, and would be recording me singing to Track and also having virtual Singing Couching with my teacher, I would be using my MacBook as Camera but using the NT USB Mic now Thought?
Sounds like a nice upgrade! I hope it works nicely for you!
Does this work with android? Thanks
It should because it is class compliant. The app you use will need to be capable of choosing an external mic.
@@curtisjudd okay thanks for your reply. I am worried that the native camera app wont support this on my phone. Surprisingly I could not find any videos or articles of anyone actually using it on an android phone
Any input on the connections on the back? Mine just plugs in maybe 30% of the USB C and the 3.5mm jack plugs in maybe 60%. The connections don't plug into the ports 100%
Hmm, haven't noticed any problems with the two copies I have here.
Why do you think NT USB products don't make upgrades ... but make mini versions?
I like the shape of the old RODE NT USB
I'm not sure what they would do to upgrade the original NT-USB yet aside from maybe use a USB-C output instead of USB-B. I'm pretty sure the mini version is so that they can sell to a larger market. $99 USD is a price that appeals to a much larger market segment. And now they have USB options for different voice types: Mini for brighter voices, original for darker voices.
HI there, you said it's okay for 250 ohm Headphone, so will that be okay for my DT 990 PRO 250 ohm headphone too? Actually I already have the Rode VideoMic NTG Mic, in terms of sound quality, how would you compare the VideoMic NTG to this one just for live streaming / podcasting setup (me being close to the mic)
Thanks.
I don't have DT990 Pros on hand to test that, but it worked ok for my DT880 Pros. The VideoMic NTG - I'd just stick with that, unless you need the functionality of the new RODE Connect app to record 4 NT USB-Mini microphones simultaneously to your Mac or PC.
Hi. Can you suggest me which one is better option for me. out of these 2 i have to chosse one. i.e rode nt mini vs senheiser profile usb.
I have to use it in a little untreated room to record or to deliver fitness podcast and some time for some demonstration too.
I have to purchase it one time. So need your perfect advice.
Thanks.
Both mics need to be close so I don’t think either are great for exercise demos.
Coming to this review a few years after it was made but I wanted to let you know it was very helpful. I want a mic that can be taken with me for remote (at a proper desk) instructional video (and remote work) recording from time to time. I have an audio technica usb+ mic that I've been using but with all the accessories it's just too much.
Thanks again.
Glad it was helpful 👍
You mentioned the microphone could also be used with a tablet... ...then proceeded to only show the setup and working on a computer with sophisticated software. C’mon, really?
Yes, with iPad, plug it in and it works. That's all you need to do. I don't have an Android tablet to demonstrate.
Amazing review, Thanks a lot! :)
Just one question remained unanswered for me, which one you would recommend for musical recordings, especially singing?
I think it still depends on the voice - for brighter voices with more sibilance, the NT USB Mini. For darker voices without as much sibilance or articulation, the original.
HI Curtis.
I am looking for a mic for zoom class. I want the mic out of the frame and away from me.
which mic would be the best option.. at least 30cm away from me just next to my laptop or possibly a boom arm...
thanks
There isn't a best option, really. There are probably millions of options and so many factors. But you might consider a RODE VideoMic NTG: ruclips.net/video/c4Pu72J5BRE/видео.html
Hello Curtis. I hope you see this to answer. Can I use this to record audio with my iPad Pro to then take the audio to overlay onto video in lumafusion?
Hi WatchReport.com, this will work with iPad, however, I don't know about lumafusion.
Thanks for the review. As a novice I found this really helpful. Have picked up one of these to record lectures during the lockdown. One thing I was wondering: how much “input volume” did you find you needed on the mic. I seem to have it up to 85% with the mic around 5” from my mouth. This leads to a recording which falls in the -18 to -6 dB range. This feels quite high for input, but have no idea if this is normal. Or is this completely subjective?
Hi Alex, it is subjective and depends largely on how loud your voice is and on the timbre of your voice. Perfectly ok to set it to 85%.
Curtis Judd thanks so much for the reply
Teaching piano online, finding that my Android phone is much faster than my computer, but mic on phone does not pick up bass sounds very well. Can you recommend a mic that will plug into my phone jack but also still let me use my headphones.
Hi Harry, I'm sorry, I don't know about which microphones are available for Android phones. Sorry I couldn't help more but wish you all the best.
Great review, thanks!
Did anyone in your family March SCV? 👀
SCV Cadets 👍
Thanks for this video! my Rode nt-usb seems to be picking up a lot of noise while recording. I noticed that the USB-C cable that it comes with doesn't fit snug in the back. Could that be a reason?
Probably not. Is the noise actually there in the room or more like electronic noise?
My only concern is how close I have to be the mic. Starting a vidcast/online learning. What do you recommend for mic distance of around 15 inches?
So tempted to buy this though for the quality and size. I can travel with it, which is awesome!
If you're going to be farther away, like 15 inches, I'd recommend a shotgun microphone like the RODE VideoMic NTG instead: ruclips.net/video/c4Pu72J5BRE/видео.html
Hi Curtis. In my opinion, for comparing all mics, it's better to use your own voice. So we can notice all differences between those mics.
Thanks for sharing.

Hello there . When I attach the mic and try to work with Garage Band, I get this rhythmic clicking sound, how to I get rid of that?
Hi Zeina, hmm, I'm not sure, I didn't experience that. If you're using a USB hub, I'd try connecting the mic directly to the computer. I'd also quit all other apps on the computer. You might also contact RODE support - they should have some insights. Best wishes!
I installed the Rode app on my Android device and it had an old firmware and i just updated mine to the latest one version 1.3.5 im not sure if it did anything but was wondering if you know anything about the new firmware?
No, thanks for letting me know there's a new firmware!
So what would be the benefits of the big brother NT USB compared to the Mini version?
Brighter, crisper sound. Separate knobs for headphone volume and mic/computer mix. More effective, external pop filter.
Can you use a USB-C to USB-C cable and plug it into an iPad Pro so you don't have to get a USB-C to USB-A adapter?
Yes you can!

Hi Jake, I used the On-stage Stands desk stand - linked in the description.
How do I use my rode mini without needing headphones to hear my zoom calls?
You want to listen on your computer speakers? In Zoom, you select the computer's speakers for the Speaker setting.
Solid review and the family cameo was fun! I may have to snag one of these mics soon. Thx Curtis!
Thx Atomic Pixel!
What's up, one question.....I want to buy a gaming microphone, I'm between the fox and the Rode NT-USB Mini, which one do you recommend because it would only be for gaming and if the distance between the microphone and me would affect these two microphones when communicating with my playmates?
I haven’t used the Fox but the important thing for either mic will be to have it close - within about 10cm.
@@curtisjudd MANY THANKS!
it picks up alot of the siliva noise, though for some reason it's less noticeable when you talk.

Dear Curtis, I have a question. Maybe silly. But.. Can I use a classic USB-C cable (USB-C to USB-C, not USB-C to USB-A) to connect this mic to my smartphone or tablet without any problem? Thx, Pawel :)

Choosing between this and iRig Mic HD 2. Which one to pick?
I haven't had a chance to use the iRig so I don't know. But I've had good results with some of their other products.
Is there the ability to increase the gain on this mic if it were used during a zoom call?
Yes, on the Mac, you do so in the sound preferences. It appears to be changing the analogue gain level of the microphone and not just adding digital gain.
Very good review. Thank you so much
Thank you.
Hey Sir, would this mic be my better choice? I'm currently own a Boya-MM1 Shotgun Mic but it doesn't do well with cutting background noise.
I do have an untreated room, but most of the time when I'm recording I'll close all windows with curtain and fans as well, but I'm still receiving plenty of background noise!
Also in my wardrobe aka "vocal booth", it gets the noise as well! So do you think Rode NT-USB Mini will get its job done on separating background noise? Thanks!
Hmm, usually shotgun microphones are very directional. How from from the microphone are you working? Do you have any samples online?
@@curtisjudd Hey Sir, thank you for the reply!
I usually point it straight to my mouth in a near distance, even though I tried record at different devices like smartphone, camera, laptop, all of them are giving me the same result. Its almost sounds like I am using a build-in smartphone microphone quality.

Hey curtis, please help, I have been watching your videos and want to buy my first mic. lav mic is not great. I but either this one or Samson Q2U for my zoom meetings. Which one I should go?
Either can do a nice job. You'll need to use the Samson very close to your mouth. Or if you go with the rode and use it farther from your mouth, it will probably pick up more room noise. Both are good, but placement is critical for the best results.
@@curtisjudd thank you. I order samson yesterday to test it out. Thanks again. I subscribed your channel and recommend to my friends.
How awesome are you. I'm impressed by that little mic. I may need to pick on up.

Hi, have you tried the nt usb mini with an ipad air 4 if it is compatible?
Yes, but it didn’t work. You really need an iPad Pro or computer to supply enough power to make it work.
Fabulous video Curtis. Thanks
Thanks Phil.
Can this mic be linked directly to a camera?
It isn't made to do that but some people have connected a USB battery and then run a 3.5mm stereo minijack cable out the headphone output to their camera. There are better options if recording to camera. I'd have a look at the RODE VideoMic NTG, for example. It can feed audio directly to camera and for cases where you want to record to your computer, it also can connect to it via USB - best of both worlds. My review of the VideoMic NTG: ruclips.net/video/c4Pu72J5BRE/видео.html
What's the longest USB cord that I can use with this?
If you use a high quality cable, it should be able to reach about 15 feet.
Thank you so much for including female voices! That was the deciding factor for me to purchase these mics. Also, for anyone with kids, the internal pop filters are great for little critters who like to put their mouths right up on the mics and make loud sounds. 🙉😆

Really helpful review! Mine arrived a few days ago. But out of the box I'm getting a lot of echo (it sounds slightly better than my macbook internal microphone but not nearly as crisp as it does in this video. I'm new to all this but any advice would be appreciated!
How far are you from the microphone? That's the biggest thing that cam make a difference. Ideally, you should be 4 or 5 inches. Also, if your room has reverb/echo, consider putting blankets on or in front of hard surfaces like hard floors and walls. That will reduce the echo effect.
Hi.is it best microphone in this category 100$?
It is very good.
I dont have a controlled environment but really want a clean audio to do a podcast. I have this mic but mine it picks up everything I can hear, or even the minor sound I can barely hear. How do I fix that? Thank you!
Hi Hilda, if you are doing an audio-only podcast, you might consider recording in a walk-in closet. Closets are usually very quiet and the clothing absorbs sound before it can reflect back into the very sensitive microphone. Best wishes!
Oh, also, be sure you're talk no more than about 4 or 5 inches from the front of the microphone (keep around 10cm if you reckon in metric).
Very nice and helping video! Thanks!
👍
i can't tell if the mic is good or if your voice is just nice
I suggest listening to a lot of different samples of different voices through this mic. Also, I included samples of others so that you could hear at least 3 voices through the mic so hopefully that helps a little.
Can i use this mic with my iphone? Do i need a special cable?
You’ll need the Apple usb to lightning adapter.
