UPDATE - DEITY has a beta app called Sidus TC Sync that looks very similar to Tentacle Sync's app for Mac. But DEITY's is for both Windows and Mac. Find more details at deitymic.com/products/sidus-tc-sync/
    Corrections:
    - ZOOM F2 only records 32-bit float (not 24-bit linear)
    - The last silhouette sample is the PR-2 and Sanken COS-11D

Sidus TC Sync works well and very promising in its beta state with FCP X 10.8. I used it on a 5 camera + Zoom F8 shoot with 4 x Deity TC1's for a mix of audio and file timecode. Had one issue, and the folks at Deity were REALLY helpful and got it sorted.

AA battery support, especially rechargeable ones, is a welcome "feature" of this unit. Li ones are great but sooner or later you'll need to change them and most manufacturers either glueing them in or not selling a replacement.

      Agreed!

Also, no matter how good or how new the built in lithium battery in any of these devices is, if it happens to go flat during a shoot you're screwed. You either need an entire spare unit on standby or you need to pause production while you recharge. I tend to consider any non-replaceable battery (in the field) a total non-starter on devices like this.

Thank Curtis for this DETAILED & UNIQUE video. As of today, July 28th, 2024, out of 6 videos I’ve watched, yours is the ONLY one that talks about the following 3 things. First, the PR 2 can be used with almost any other lavalier microphones from other brands because its input jack provides 5V plug in power. Second, it can be use as an audio interface for computers. Third, if my camera does not have a dedicated time code input, and I use the audio input instead, the time code syncing might be off.

I know you're comparing apples to apples here but the Tentacle Track E can also be purcahased without the lav mic for only $249. For someone like me who isn't interested in the included lavalier microphones on any of these units that makes the Tentacle units a lot more attractive considering how good their apps are and the work flow when using their sync units also. I would use these type units for field recording with mics I already have and for $20 more I will be deciding on whether to get the Tentacle Track E or the this new Deity unit. I like that they both record in 24 bit also. I might actually order one of these Deity recorders very soon. Thanks for the review.

I've been needing more than one lav lately and I'm leaning toward the theos transmitter and receiver. Fantastic Mr judd. Great insight. Im a motorcyclist I have a helmet Rode Lav mic connected to the helmet GoPro (media mod) directly. Currently. But the audio feed is always clipping. I post process the audio on FCpx using Logic pros plugins. Now If I add a Y 3.5 mm splitter run the Lavalier into Deity’s rec 3.5 in and take an 3.5 mm out from the deity’s monitor out will it
1.send clipless audio into the GoPro?
2.will it automatically start recording when I press record on the gopro( that happens with my Sony A7rv and RODE video mic NTG)
    Or
Should I buy the Rode wireless go with 32 bit float
Tia. Your answer could revolutionise the world of motovlogging 😊

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  3 месяца назад

      1) depends on whether the clipping is due to wind hitting the mic, or input from the mic being too hot for the GoPro to handle.

no slow motion either. card location behind batteries is slightly annoying but in practice you pull the batteries after a shoot then grab the card. My complaint with the US version won't allow wireless transmission while recording. People on movie sets aren't going to use this and normal creators are going to use Rode or DJI that send audio into the camera and record backup. Most sub 5k cameras don't support timecode. Great job, Curtis! Have you tested the audio drift on the recording? I've had terrible issues with the internal recording of my Theos. I tested 6 units and they all had the same drift of roughly 20ms per hour of recording, which amounts to 160ms drift per shooting day (talking about the audio recording itself, not the timecode!). This means that the internal recording does not match the live feed in length after even an hour. If the PR-2 uses the same circuit design it might suffer from the same issue, which would make the unit useless in my opinion. Note that I've not had this issue with the tentacle Track E (of which I own 4). I tried reaching out to Andrew from Deity but their EU support person will not let me talk to him directly. I find that very unfortunate and I will think twice before investing in Deity products next time.

@@curtisjuddBasically, I output a click track to each transmitter via line-in and recorded it simultaneously in my DAW and internally in each transmitter, then imported the internal recording, lined up the first click and measured the amount of drift after each hour. Since there are two independent clock masters in this setup, there must be some drift, but not 20ms per hour! The most ridiculous thing is that, according to Deity's own specifications, the built-in timecode is supposed to be much more accurate than the ADC's digital clock! How is that possible? I would be happy to send you the recorded tracks if you're interested.

So could I connect the deity with 2x rca to a stereo trs minijack from a dj mixer like a pioneer djm900nexus.

We can only hope that a firmware update will be released soon to address this, or at least a feature that allows the left and right channels to be linked. *most cameras with a timecode input should have a timecode generator connected to them through the duration of a filming session because most cameras do not have a TCXO (highly accurate clock which adapts to different temperatures). If your camera supports jamming, then you can jam and it will get you pretty close, but probably not perfectly frame accurate.

Does it work with the Sennheiser MKE2?

Do I need TC-1 to use time code? For example I have two PR-2 each for 1 talent and 2 cameras. Can I jam PR-2s and cameras with the same time code from "the master PR-2"?
Some reviewers said I need TC-1 for that.

No, you can jam two PR-2s using the Sidus Audio app.

@@curtisjudd And then each camera from each PR-2? Do I need them connected to the cameras the whole time?

@@JoATTech Cameras drift. Ideally you'll attach a dedicated TC-1 to each camera and leave it connected and feeding timecode to the camera through the entire filming session.
But if you just need sync to "get you in the ballpark" and frame accuracy is not critical, then yes, sync the two PR-2s with the app first, then jam the cameras from the PR-2.

      @@curtisjudd Thanks for clarifying Curtis.
That's what I thought. I think I will stay with scratch audio. Davinci actually syncs via waveform quite well. I have a keyboard shortcut for this and audio track1 is master track to sync to (Davinci moves other tracks and never moves track1). Quite easy to do, and if I have to convert audio to timecode using 3rd party application this would take much more time than just waveform sync.

@@JoATTech agreed. For me, timecode is most helpful when working on projects with 10s of clips. If less than 10, I usually just waveform sync.
